good monday morning. i'm reena ninan. >> i'm gio benitez in for t.j. holmes. we begin with a confession by robert durst suspected of killing three people. >> they include his first wife who disappeared more than 30 years ago. a neighbor who durst admitted to killing in 2001 and found not guilty claiming self defense. >> elizabeth, good morning. >> good morning to you gio and reena. after years of staying quiet talking to the documentary filmmaker just may have been the millionaires undoing. in it the documentary reveals a handwritten letter linking durst to one of the murder victims. today it is back to court for 71-year-old millionaire robert durst previously investigated in two three separate killings. those three cases were profiled

in "the jinx" and his possible confession even recorded on tape. >> what the hell did i -- killed them all. >> agents arrested durst over the weekend inside this hotel where sources say he checked in using a fake name and id. his attorney says he will not fight extradition but will fight the charges. >> there's a lot of people out there that think i killed my wife. that i killed susan berman. that i intentionally murdered morris black. >> the 71-year-old's first wife kathleen disappeared in 1982. in 2000 susan berman was found murdered as she was set to talk to police about kathleen's disappearance. >> the question is did the police suspect him enough? her friends and family members think that they could have and should have been tougher. >> a year later, durst admitted he killed his elderly neighbor morris black but claimed self

defense and acquitted. now the series appears to help police reopen the case and arrest durst for murdering susan berman. >> while durst maintains he is innocent. authorities say at the time of his arrest durst was found on him fake documents suggesting he may have wanted to flee the country, possibly to cube back. >> incredible story. thank you so much. and news breaking overnight now in los angeles. two police officers injured in a shootout. >> they were in the unmarked vehicles when fired upon by two men. the officers were treated for minor injuries. they returned fire at the suspects who fled the scene. residents told to stay inside. now to the other big stories. the arrest in ferguson missouri. >> last week's shooting of two officers took the conflict between police and protesters to a new level. >> it was the members of the community who led police to the suspects.

abc reports from ferguson. >> reporter: 20-year-old jeffrey williams taken into custody. >> he has acknowledged his participation in firing the shots and that he did fire the shots. >> the shooting taking place at the end of a police protest. the prosecutors saying he had taken part in that demonstration. later firing his handgun from a vehicle. shell casings found at the scene match a 40 caliber handgun recovered by detectives. police say williams told them he had a dispute with someone at the protest and was aiming for them, not the officers. ultimately it was tips from the community that led to the arrest. >> the case developed some information that was provided by members of the public. >> this community still reeling from the shooting death of 18-year-old michael brown by a ferguson police officer. now williams who is out on probation facing charges including two counts of assault. as for the two officers they have been told the suspect is in custody as they continue to recover at home.

that giant scaffolding right there in portland teetering in the winds and crashing down metal and wood littering the street as people watched gusts upwards of 60 miles per hour. a massive tree fell on a car with a woman inside. rescuers using a chain saw to get her out. look right there. and downed power lines knocked out electricity to thousands of customers. the ohio valley rivers will stay above flood stage. melting snow have raised the ohio live to levels not seen since '93. greater cincinnati and northern kentucky hard hit. >> boston officially broke the snowfall record. not sure they wanted this one. the tally stands at 108.6 inches after three more fell yesterday. the last record 107.9 set back in the winter of 1995 and '9.

and welcome back with some good news for drivers on this monday morning. a price drop at the pump. the national average for a gallon now $2.42. that's three cents cheaper than a week ago and $1.09 below what it was last year. this ends a 40 day strike of price hikes. >> the obama administration is moving to stop illegal fishing. launching a system being able to tell consumers where their fish was caught processed and stored to safeguard the fisheries by protecting them from the threat of illegal and unregulated fishing. >> it's time to fill out the

on saturday another deadly collision, this time in kentucky. a freight train just as a car plows through the intersection. two people died. there have been five trains versus vehicle collisions in just six weeks. crash of a different sort. watch the dragster on the right as it flies about 20 feet into the air before slamming back on the track. amazingly the driver basically okay. larry dickson complained afterwards of a sore back and knee and that was about all he joked saying quote, at least i'm in one piece. >> amazing tale of survival out of malaysia. two planes collide clipping each other's wings during a practice run. one of them caught on fire as they sorried to the ground. the pilots hit the ejector buttons just in time and they parachuted to safety. >> chuck schumer is calling for a ban on the sale of lasers.

green lasers temporarily blind pilots. at laguardia several planes were struck and pilots sustained eye injuries. nationwide 11 incidents just like this every day. >> it is not a joke. a treacherous hiking trail in hawaii has claimed another victim. a 25-year-old man was hiking that trail yesterday when he fell about 20 feet and then slid another 150. he was air-lifted to safety. see him below the helicopter there and he was taken to a hospital now listed in serious but stable condition. >> new brand of cholesterol drugs may be available at your pharmacy. study have shown the drugs to reduce the risks of heart attacks and strokes by half. the fda is expected to decide some time this summer whether to approve the experimental drugs. >> we mentioned a loss of productivity at the office thanks to march madness.

>> time now for some particulars and we get that from our guy at espn. >> selection sunday is in the books. let the bracket filling begin as the ncaa men's basketball tournament commences later in the week. kentucky the number one overall seed, 34-0. won the sec title game sunday. wisconsin beat michigan state in overtime to win the big ten title. villanova, the number one seed in the east and duke the number one seed in the south region. here's a look at the updated odds to win the ncaa. men's basketball tournament as you might have guessed, kentucky is your favorite. duke and wisconsin, both 6-1 and villanova 8-1. gonzaga, north carolina round out these eight. to the nba. lebron james never got a chance to play in an ncaa tournament. his cavaliers taking on the

hundreds of them. abc's john donvan explains. >> reporter: for weeks the bathtub at the clies household as looked like a giant mailbox. a facebook posting by chad clies back in february to his 400 or so facebook friends mentioning he had a son whose 9th birthday was coming up. a kid who -- >> unfortunately he doesn't get invites to birthdays or sleepovers. >> reporter: hunter clies has autism and almost never speaks. aside from his little brother he doesn't have that much kid companionship because he has trouble connecting too. but hunter can read. >> he is actually 100% able to read everything that is given to him. he just doesn't have the ability to verbalize. >> it was with that in mind that his dad said i am asking you to send him a birthday card. >> i was really hoping for 20 or 30 which would be a success.
