expressway were shut down for hours. a big problem a big mess and death on the atlantic city expressway today. that tragedy marked the final dave winter literally. spring begins in 45 minutes. but old man winter is being dragged out kicking and screaming. we're getting hit by a substantial snowstorm and here in allentown they had to deal with whiteout conditions. some communities are getting close to 6-inches in the lehigh valley but spring is almost here and yes the sun will come out for a bit tomorrow. let's get the latest facts and figures on the storm from double scan radar and meteorologist cecily tynan. >> and jim, tomorrow it will warm up, so all of this will be melting tomorrow but storm tracker 6 live double scan showing that we still have snow falling around philadelphia and areas just to the east. notice though, northwest suburbs we are getting some drier air moving in and that is breaking down that snow and it's tapering off to flurries and it's ending in parts of

berks county, lancaster county and then we do have some of that rain that's been working up gradually from the south. so a lot of colors across new jersey on storm tracker, that pink is the heavier snow falling at the rate of 1 to 2 inches per hour. that's beginning to push off shore. you'll notice this blueline that's just to the south of philadelphia right now into glassboro and that's where we're getting that mixture of snow and rain and wilmington down through hammonton, mays landing areas to the south this has found in a heavy rain event. all the precipitation will continue to move through the east over the next couple hours. right now temperatures really tell the story. dover it's 35, wildwood it's 37 degrees. that's why it's raining there. philadelphia 33. allentown and reading 32 degrees and once the clouds clear out temperatures will be dropping down below freezing. so, even though you may not want to be shoveling in the final hours of winter you really want to clear your driveways, your sidewalks tonight of that heavy wet snow

because things will be freezing over solid. so, this is what to expect this evening. the precipitation will be clearing the coast by 9 o'clock, temperatures dropping below freezing so standing slush will spike up and there will be some slick roads tonight. i'll talk about a brief warm upcoming up in the full accuweather 7-day forecast. jim. >> allall right, cecily. let's switch live to "action news" reporter john rawlins in allentown. john, it appears the lehigh valley got the worst of this. >> reporter: association the numbers would indicate, jim. it's been -- we've not had any problems with any rain lines here in the lehigh valley, that i can tell you. as you look out here over the northeast extension it has been all snow today, nothing but snow since we arrived seven to seven and a half hours ago. looked out her window and hoped the snow would be a no show. >> actually when i not up this morning nothing was happening and i was like thank the lord. maybe they made a mistake. >> reporter: but no mistake the weather people got it right and by afternoon irving

and others were cleaning cars and clearing pavements. the snow almost like 4-inches heavy and wet. norma lebron discovered she was missing something dan went in search. >> four storks even two supermarkets and two bodegas walking and there's no salt anywhere. >> reporter: gone. >> gone, gone. >> reporter: highway conditions varied. north to scranton on the turnpike lanes were reported clear and wet though visibility was poor and road spray a factor. but to the west there was icing. this jackknifed tractor-trailer closed i-78 near the kutztown exit. mike told us about the conditions he encountered. >> it's horrible out that way. coming down 78 it was slushy then all of a sudden it went to ice many people are driving too fast. >> reporter: so, trouble. >> yes. >> reporter: you saw a truck go off the road. >> right through the concrete barrier and spread the concrete everywhere. >> reporter: well, that incident happened about 40 miles west of here in northern berks county.

the road was closed for more than an hour we're told but there were no reported injuries. the snow continues to fall here in the lehigh valley. hopefully, though, it is tapering off. live in allentown, john rawlins, channel6 "action news." jim. >> all right, john. we are now live in mobile6. we are on the blue route southbound near broomall: as you can seat roads are primarily wet. not too bad for driving conditions on 476. traffic is is moderate but moving. now, it goes without saying that conditions are slick in many locations and again the winter weather advisory has been extended until 10:00 p.m. "action news" reporter david henry is live in center city philadelphia and david what about conditions there? >> reporter: well, jim, the snow stopped awhile ago and just within the past half hour it has picked up again. you can see these large heavy flakes along with some freezing rain that's falling right now leaving a slushy

mess here in center city but look on the bright side of it. at least there is plenty of seating available at the outdoor cafe tables here at dillworth park. >> i can't believe it. i'm so tired of the snow and the winter. >> reporter: no signs of spring today. no budding flowers and trees no chirping birds just the sounds we've all become weary of hearing. the shovels and snowplows getting yet another workout. it snowed heavily throughout the day in center city. slush piled up on the streets and sidewalks. pedestrians had a tough time of it but traffic kept moving: are you enjoying this weather right now. >> not so much. first day of spring i thought it would be warmer. >> reporter: we were all hoping it would be warmer but still too early to give up the winter coats. is it hard to put it away? >> uh, no. >> reporter: you're going to hang onto it. >> i'm going to hang onto it for another week and then i'm going to put it away. >> reporter: anxious to get the spring clothes out.

"action news" reporter vernon odom is live in the 6400 block of woodcrest avenue in the overbrook section of philadelphia. vernon. >> reporter: jim, it is in fact a trio of teens who are

under arrest and in police custody tonight in connection with this case, this killing that took place on woodcrest avenue last week. sources say all three have given full confessions including the alleged trigger man who was arrested overnight. police say the overnight arrest of 15-year-old tyfine hamilton wraps up their manhunt for three murder suspects. james stuhlman was shot and killed last week as he walked his dog through his neighborhood. with surveillance video police were soon able to focus on hamilton and his overbrook high school mate brandon smith who was locked up earlier. a 14-year-old is also in custody. overnight in the 2800 block of midvale avenue, hamils parents surrendered him to a heavily armed couldn't tin gender of police. >> the father went and swat went and i believe homicide detectives met him there and there was an exchange without incident. >> reporter: hamilton and smith are charged as adults in a botched robbery attempt that found in murder. during the police investigation a raid on the girard avenue home of the

14-year-old yielded a large cache of weapons includesying assault rifles and handguns. atf is investigating. 15-year-olds are no strangers to police. >> both of the 15-year-olds do have prior records. >> for? >> robbery and different things of that natch but they have robberies in their background 14 years older, 15 years old, kids not going to school kids not in the house that they belong in out at night running after people with guns and all those guns that they had it's really a shame. >> reporter: the suspects are telling police it was a random robbery attempt after a night of playing basketball. they fled with nothing. >> how much money can you possibly have walking your dog? i mean, anybody who has a dog knows the most you got is your keys with you. you're walking your dog. so what are you going to get have something like that? that's just stupid in addition to being vicious. >> reporter: james stuhlman's family tonight declined comment. that includes his wife and his 13-year-old daughter who said

nothing and they're not commenting on these triple arrests. live in overbrook vernon odom, channel6 "action news." >> thank you verny vernon. police are investigating the discovery of a body in a boarding house in west philadelphia. law men found the body of a woman on the living room floor in the 5100 block of spruce street. police believe she had been dead for days, even for weeks. she had been shot one time. the dead woman was 28. she has been identified as geneva owens. law men say some resees dents of the home have criminal records including sex and firearms charges. can coming up on "action news" tonight a rude awakening in the bustleton section of philadelphia as intruders mace a couple inside their home. >> villanova is just one win away from the sweet 16 but that still doesn't sound good enough for at least one of the villanova stars. we'll hear from the wildcats out in pittsburgh coming up in sports. >> and cecily tynan back with the accuweather 7-day forecast when "action news" continues.

>> a couple in their 70's was shaken up after a home invasion in bustleton in philadelphia this morning. police say the men broke into the home on murray street through a window at 6:30 in the morning. the intruder sprayed mace on the couple. police say the men then took off with what they could. the homeowners were not seriously hurt. a camden native who had a chance to meet president obama told students to believe and achieve today. officer virginia mattias visited saint joe's pro cathedral school her alma mater. last month she was one of six police officers invited to the white house to discuss the

strategies of making city streets safer and building confidence and trust between police and the communities. today mattias talked to students about that sit-down and serving the city where she grew up. a playground without slides and a jungle gym doesn't sound like much fun unless you can build them your seven. the please touch museum has opened a unique space for kids to let their creativity run wild. the imagination playground is filled with giant foam blocks and noodles for kids to design and redesign their own play things. parents are invited to explore, too. families can check out the playground through september 30. temple university students toured the 6abc studios today. the television news production students had the opportunity to check out the various jobs that it takes to create this newscast. anchor matt o'donnell meteorologist melissa magee spoke about the on air side of things. students then shaded producers and directors assignment and

heavy snow. this will be pulling off the coast within a about the next two hours and then we'll begin to dry out. so, we are saying goodbye winter, so long, good riddance with a snowstorm. center city reporting 3-inches of snow in graterford montgomery county 5.6 lehigh county 6.2, mount laurel, new jersey 5-inches in claymont delaware reporting 3-inches of snow. now we're getting ready to say hello spring. in just a few minutes officially at 6:45 this is when the sun's direct rays are over the equator and then our days will get longer, continue to get longer and we'll be warming up in about a month the normal high will be up to 65 degrees. but right now we're dealing with temperatures in the 30's. 33 trees in philadelphia, 32 in allentown trenton and reading, 34 in millville and wildwood 37 degrees in with temperatures dropping at or below freezing tonight you really do want to treat your sidewalks, your drive way get rid of that slush. satellite6 along with action radar showing that moisture

really should be clearing the coast by about 9 o'clock and then temperatures will be dropping. so any slush will be freezing solid overnight with most areas dropping below freezing down into the 20's in the far northwest suburbs. the good news is temperatures rebound very nicely tomorrow afternoon with winds out of the southwest ahead of that cold front we make it up to 55 degrees. that front could touch off a shower in the evening especially north of philadelphia behind this system though, temperatures drop back into the 40's on sunday and you factor in the winds, it's going to feel even cooler than 45 degrees. so still going to feel like winter for the next several days. association the -- so, the exclusive accuweather forecast, milder tomorrow, 55 degrees. good weather for the rescheduled union game. sunday back into the 40's, 45 degrees. monday it's sunny but chilly, 42. tuesday stuck in the 40's, 46 degrees and finally on wednesday, back to normal with a high of 55 degrees.

thursday it's mild but it's a trade-off. it comes with on and off showers, a high of 60 and friday lingering showers with a high of 56 degrees. the good news is the next seven days no snow in the forecast. but it's going to stay on the cool side. >> next seven days no snow. how about the next seven months? >> we'll see about that. not until we get into mid april can i say that it's finally over. >> thank you cecily. abc's world news tonight with david muir is next on channel 6.
