escape their assailants by runing into that subway line but the mob caught up with one of them beat him and sent him to the hospital. the victim shown here sitting with the blue and white stocking cap tried to blend in with the subway crowd but soon he surrounded and the suspects begin pummeling him. roughly a half dozen teens punching, kicked the victim as he tries to flee. >> as he fled away from them, he slipped. that's when he start to do get kicked. >> reporter: central detectives captain frank ban ford says the victim his friend and two girls were walking along broad street on thursday afternoon when they attracted the mob's attention. something was said to one of the females. words were exchanged. then. >> our complainant witness looked oversaw that some of the friends started to chase him and they fled. they fled down the subway northbound platform broad and locust street. >> reporter: investigators say the attackers appear to be high school students. several of their faces can be clearly seen especially the two that began the assault.

police are hoping teachers and administrators in the area will watch the video and recognize the suspects. >> he could have been seriously injured. luckily he wasn't. i mean, you get a whole group kicking. it depends upon where they hit him how severe is this going to be. >> reporter: yes, that victim was taken to hon man hospital. police tell me he was treated for minor bumps and bruises and is expected to be okay. i'm live in center city, chad pradelli, channel6 "action news." >> all right, chad, thank you. engineers with frontier airlines have been working all day to remove a plane that got stuck in the mud at new castle county airport. the front wheels got stuck last night as the plane was moving on the taxi way. flight 1435 was heading to orlando. no one was hurt in the incident. all 105 passengers and five crew members were taken off the plane and spent the night in a hotel. they took off on another flight this afternoon. barn went up in flames today here in burlington county. chopper 6 hd captured the scene in mansfield township

late this morning. this is at bishop farm on mount pleasant road. no injuries were reported. the cause is not yet known and it's not clear what was in the barn that caught fire. >> thieves broke into several vehicles in philadelphia overnight and stole the air bags a. investigators say all the vehicles targeted are hondas and this type of theft is an ongoing problem in the city. "action news" reporter david henry live along hartel avenue in rhawnhurst with the full story for us. david. >> reporter: yeah, hey monica. the thieves were out working three blocks of hartel street here last night in rhawnhurst. the cars are gone now but the glass down here on the street still tells the story. five cars in all were hit and it might have been a lot worse if the thieves hadn't been scared off. >> cops were here within 30 seconds to a minute. >> reporter: the air bag thieves have been targeting this area of northeast. fortunately for many on this street jean key hoe was awake. >> i'm in bed and i hear a

thump. and i said it sounds out my door. that's when i looked out and saw a flashlight on the driver's side of my car and a gray hood deal. i could only see his head, like a hoodie. >> reporter: she woke her husband. >> said joe somebody is trying to steal our car. that's when i ran down the steps, got the key fob and hit the panic button. >> reporter: more than one had been working simultaneously because they left behind air bags in some cars after breaking in. >> my neighbor's window was broken and my sons who were further up their cars so maybe when my husband hit that alarm button it scared them away. >> reporter: since the first of the year air bag thieves have hit more than 30 cars in the northeast. they pop three screws and they're off with the air bag in less than 30 seconds. they sell them to crooked repair shops for 50 to $200. the shops then collect more than a thousand dollars from insurance companies for installing them as replacements. victims like the kehoes end up paying the deductibles on their policies in their case

$500 and there's lost time. they didn't get joe jr.'s air bag before they were scared off but he's got to replace a broken window, not easy for a college student. why aren't in you class today? >> not in class because my window broke so i missed my 8 o'clock because i was up until 5:00 a.m., so... >> reporter: police believe they are dealing with a ring of thieves, some of whom have been locked up before. they want you to call 911 right away if you think you've seen anything at all suspicious in this area. live in rhawnhurst, david henry, channel6 "action news." sharrie. >> all right, david, thank you. police investigated a threat made against the south jersey school. officers went through the joseph c maynard school. someone mentioned violence against the school. police are working to find out who made the threat. there isn't a whole lot of warmth. it's the first full week of spring but we have winter

temperatures to deal with. meteorologist cecily tynan is outside getting a look at the forecast for us. >> loads of sunshine today but despite the sunshine, second day in a row when temperatures didn't climb out of the 40's. yesterday we had all that sunshine, it was 47 degrees. today the high so far only 43 degrees. the normal high this time of the year is 55 degrees. but some areas didn't even climb out of the 30's. allentown currently it's 39 degrees and the poconos 27, trenton 40, philadelphia that 43 reading 41, wilmington 42. and millville 43 degrees. and we do have just enough breeze to create a bit of a wind chill factor. the wind chill makes it feel like 35 in philadelphia, feels like 32 in wildwood, feels like 34 in reading and 31 degrees in allentown. storm tracker 6 live double scan showing that there is a clipper that's diving through the ohio valley. that will be pulling just to our south and that will spread

ad. cruz made the official announcement this morning at liberty university in virginia one of the world's biggest christian colleges. >> i believe in the power of millions of courageous conservatives rising up to reignite the promise of america. and that is why today i am announcing that i'm running for president of the united states. [cheers and applause] >> cruz dropped the news during one of the school's convocations which students are required to attend. anyone who did not show up today was fined $10. some students wore shirts supporting other potential candidates in protest. president barack obama is focusing on attracting more science technology engineering and math students through private sector efforts. at the white house science fair today mr. obama announced more than $240 million in pledges to boost the study of those fields known as stem. this year's fair is focused on diversity.

>> pennsylvania first lady francis wolf met with teachers in bucks county today. today's stop at lafayette elementary in bristol was part of wolf's schools that teach tour. she is promoting a plan by her husband governor tom wolf to pump money into the state's public education system. mrs. wolf talked with teachers and administrators about a range of issues from test scores to fund allocations. and later this week on "action news" jim gardner goes one-on-one with governor wolf. he'll talk about the big changes the new governor has planned for education and how he wants to pay for them. it's just one of a number of topics jim will talk about with the governor this thursday at 6:00 and 11:00 only on "action news." >> all right, time now for a check of our "action news" traffic report tonight. >> all right, let's take it live to matt pelman in the "action news" traffic center. welcome back matt. >> welcome back. >> thank you very much. nice to be back with you guys. fresh shiny new work week and we've got several problems for the ride home of course monica and rick. as we look live at the schuylkill expressway, we had a problem but it cleared out pretty quickly. it was a broken down truck on the eastbound side of 76 right

by the on-ramp from girard avenue. not there anymore but still a little exat a heavy as you come away from city avenue through this point at girard. still have that crash on the roosevelt boulevard northbound side in the outer drive by the four points by cher tan hotel at grant avenue. watch out for restrictions. also a new crash in lower oxford along limestone road near white side drive. and there's a house fire in florence township burlington county so the fire police are out and about directing you around walnut street near wilbur henry drive. wrapping up that bridge opening at the burlington bristol bridge, bbb. traffic should be moving there before too long. stale wreck to avoid in deptford township by the deptford skating and fun center. watch out for the wreck along deptford avenue near tacoma boulevard. if you're riding septa's 102 trolley expect westbound delays because of a disabled trolley blocking the track. we'll check it again rick and monica, see what else is behind in the next half hour.

>> the pentagon is trying to contact more than 100 u.s. service members who are on a hit limit it was posted online by a group claiming to be affiliated with isis. the list gave names pictures and addresses of service members who have battled isis. the original posts calling for them to be killed has been removed. but officials fear it got in the hands of isis sympathizers. gang rape investigation into a university of virginia fraternity is now on hold. the alleged victim only known as jackie was the subject of a graphic article in rolling stone magazine last year. well today police said they've hit a dead end collecting evidence. more on what police did find

and why they say the case is not closed coming up in our next half hour. >> the bodies of seven jewish siblings who were killed in a new york house fire over the weekend arrived in israel today for burial. the four boys and three girls ages five to 16 were laid on stretchers wrapped in shrouds. investigators believe a hot plate left on for the sabbath caused the fatal fire on saturday. a mother an daughter survived. both are in critical condition. the children's bodies were buried at a jerusalem cemetery. >> time for health check. today marks one year since the first ebola case that did have an outbreak was confirmed. in california a woman is being monitored for signs of the ebola virus. >> health check reporter and registered nurse ali gorman has more on the story from the "action news" big board. hey, ali. >> hi, guys. the assemblywoman from santa barbara. she recently travel to an ebola affected area in west africa and has come down with

a fever. she's if isolation at a hospital in los angeles and is being monitored for ebola. officials say the public is not at risk and the woman is considered low risk for the virus but they're not taking any chances. >> it is a very dangerous nasty unpleasant condition and so we have to be ever so careful even something as delicate where one case could make a difference. >> the patient currently being treated at the national institutes of health in maryland remains in critical condition. the affordable care act is helping identify more people with type two diabetes. 23 percent more people have been diagnosed since medicaid was expanded under the act. it's been estimated a third of adults who have type two diabetes don't know it because they don't get regular healthcare. but early diagnosis helps to prevent complications including heart attacks and strokes. also today, it doesn't feel like spring but spring

it mutes the radio when the front seat passengers have not buckled up and it gives parents a report card on their teen's driving. teenagers would also receive warnings if a vehicle travels above the preset speeds between 40 and 75 miles an hour. those speeds can be adjusted by parents. gm says this is the first system in the industry that could let parents view how their teens drove the family car. well, the new audi self drive suv set off on a journey from san francisco to new york. the drive will take about 10 days. there will be a person in the driver's seat at all times in case of any trouble. the vehicle is equipped with cameras lasers and radar to allow the car to drive itself technically. the journey is hoping to give engineers a better understanding of how to make self driving cars safer than ever. >> major runway repairs at dover air force base got under way today. phase one of the project workers will tear up and replace the 9600 long north-south runway here. it's expected to take about 18 months. the repairs will force some

>> time to check that accuweather forecast at the "action news" big board. meteorologist cecily tynan here. it's been a chilly start to the spring season so far. >> it certainly has despite all the sunshine. sky 6 taking a look over the ben franklin bridge. loads of sunshine today but the second day in a row temperatures never climbed out of the 40's in philadelphia. three years ago on this date, we hit 80 degrees. not anywhere close to that today. 43 degrees right now philadelphia. wilmington 42. millville 43. allentown only 39 degrees. trenton 40 and the poconos we skied today in the poconos only 27 degrees. so we're continuing that trend of cold that we experienced

all winter long. since december 1st, temperatures averaging close to 3 degrees below normal, which is a lot. in philadelphia snowfall 26.9-inches, that's five and a half inches above normal. back in november i called for 30 to 36-inches in philadelphia, so not quite there but pretty close. and elsewhere a lot more. really your location made a big difference this winter. new york city 47-inches of snow allentown close to 50-inches, wilmington, though, quite a bit less, 23.4, atlantic city 22.4 and washington d.c. 18.3-inches of snow. little bit more snow is on the way. satellite6 along with action radar showing this little piece of energy, this is a clipper. this will be diving down to the south and that will bring us more clouds overnight an few flurries primarily south of philadelphia. it's not going to amount to anything and temperatures are going the feel like winter again. philadelphia 27. allentown 21, millville 25 and

reading 22 degrees. if we didn't get these clouds moving in tonight temperatures will be dropping down into the teens. so the clouds we can thank them for keeping temperatures from getting too cold. 8 o'clock 23 degrees, we wake up with lots of clouds and again a few flurries. by the afternoon the sunshine is back but still temperatures only in the 40's running 11 degrees below average. so, keep the winter coats on hand. will you need it again tonight and tomorrow. association the five day at 5:00 showing tomorrow we wake up with the clouds, perhaps a few flurries south of philadelphia. sunshine is back by the afternoon. the high again only in the 40's. 45 degrees. on wednesday, it gets more seasonable up to 52 degrees but the sunshine will fade behind increasing clouds, some showers breaking out as a warm front moves through. we'll feel that warmth on thursday a surge of very mild air, 69 degrees but this comes at a cost. as a cold front sweeps in, we'll see some showers

>> ♪♪ >> "action news" continues with meteorologist adam joseph, jaime apody rick williams and monica malpass. >> hello again. here's what's happening on "action news" monday night. her alleged attack at the university of virginia was the focus of a damning rolling stone article. tonight investigators are sharing their findings. also two thieves set their sights on a north philadelphia convenience store and they just aren't after cash. plus a major chain is planning onsetting up shop inside of robinson's luggage in center city philadelphia. we'll tell hugh. >> charlottesville police say just because there's no evidence of it doesn't mean "something terrible didn't happen inside phi kappa

p.s.i." today authorities suspended their investigation into a alleged gang rape at the fraternity house debts say alleged victim declined to cooperate with investigators. abc's karen traverse live in washington, d.c. with more tonight. >> reporter: good evening monica. it has been a very rough year for uva. we've seen a lot of the charlottesville police chief. he said his department could not corroborate the horrible incident in that rolling stone article. he did say something did happen but they can't find out what that is until the victim cooperates. a five month police investigation led to this conclusion. >> there's no substantive basis to conclude what is described in that article happened that night. >> reporter: the university of virginia asked the charlottesville police department to look into allegations of a 2012 gang rape at its phi kappa

fraternity house. the incident was described in graphic detail in a bombshell article in the november 2014 issue of rolling stone magazine. the alleged victim, a woman identified only as jackie, she remembers every moment of the next three hours of agony during which she says seven men took turns raping her. she told the magazine. other news organization quickly found discrepancies in the rolling stone article. the magazine would later apologize and launch an internal investigation. charlottesville police said that jackie declined to talk to them after the article was published. >> that doesn't mean that something terrible did not happen to jackie. >> reporter: it's been an extraordinarily turbulent year at uva. >> in the last seven months their university and our community has been on a national stage three times. >> reporter: the rolling stone article, the shocking murder of freshman hannah graham last fall and just last week this racially charged incident where an african-american junior appears to have been assaulted

by law enforcement officers after he was rejected from an off campus bar. >> i go to uva. >> stop fighting. >> you're racists. >> reporter: charlottesville police say jackie's case is not closed it's just suspended until they gather more information or someone else comes forward. reporting live from washington karen travers channel6 "action news." >> thank you karen. world news tonight with david muir will have more on that investigation of the alleged university avenue have a rape including the fallout from rolling stone magazine in this raleigh north carolina three workers were killed when the scaffolding they were on tore away from a building under construction and landed several stories below. investigators say all three victims were wearing safety harnesses at the time. a fourth construction worker was found inside of a portable toilet wearing a safety harness. it's not clear if he fell through the top or was actually inside when the collapse happened. he was rushed to the hospital

with serious injuries. back here philadelphia's east detective division is hoping the public recognizes two thieves who held up a convenience store in north philadelphia. this surveillance video was from inside medina's mini market. one of the suspects pointed a gun at the clerk and demanded money from the register while the second person frisked a customer and took his cell phone. the pair also got away with cash and several car tons of cigarettes. >> a former deputy attorney general pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting a 16-year-old boy. it is the story our delaware news room has been following for you today. 35-year-old daniel simmons admitted today he had sex with the teen after meeting him through the social media app grinder. he faces up to 15 years in prison when he's sentenced in june. simmons must also register as a sex offender. a college student who was also allegedly involved is now awaiting trial. in montgomery county today former eisenhower middle school math teacher jessica streeper pleaded guilty to having sex with a 14-year-old

student. prosecutors say the 34-year-old had multiple sexual encounter its with the boy between april 1st and may 20th last year. she faces up to 20 years in prison. >> delaware county firefighters are trying too figure out how a car ended up in a house in prospect park this afternoon. chopper 6 hd was over the scene along the 800 block of summit avenue. authorities aren't releasing many details but they do say the driver of the car was injured. still not clear, though, if anyone in the home was injured. a driver and two passengers are recovering tonight after slamming into a utility pole here in southwest philadelphia early this morning. happened at the intersection of island and woodland avenues. the force of the crash brought down overhead wires used for a septa trolley. the three people were taken to the hospital for treatment. still not clear how the car veered out of control. >> spring just got under way but camden is already looking for people to till summer jobs. mayor dana redd made the

announcement with teens looking on she said part-time jobs are up for grabs for adults and children as young as 14. the gigs pay $8.50 up to $15 an hour. you can go to 6abc.com and then click on the new jersey link to find details on the jobs. the deadline to file and where to drop off the application. wawa is planning on setting up shop in a prime location in center city philadelphia. company officials say they are under contract to take over the slot once held by robinson's luggage at broad and walnut. they are now in the process of getting final approval to start construction and robinson's has remained vacant since shutting its doors in late 2013. more details about this central wawa location will be released next month. >> day is national puppy day and philadelphia's red paw emergency relief team is celebrating in an adorable way. the nonprofit tweeted out pictures of the attention and love that their latest rescue pups are getting. the dogs rescued from a house fire last week but dat only

his wife vanished in 1982. she hasn't been found and durst was acquitted of the 2001 killing of his neighbor. a micro phone on the hbo show the jinx picked up durst saying "he killed them all of course." durst was arrested after that program aired. an arizona woman who has spent the past 25 years on death row for allegedly killing her son is now officially a free woman. today a judge dismissed the murder case against debra mike. she was convicted in 1990 of murdering her four-year-old. much of the prosecution's case was based on her alleged confession which she later denied making. an appeals court overturned the conviction in 2013 after finding that the detective who took that confession had a history of misconduct. >> officials say a chair lift that malfunctioned over the weekend at a ski resort in maine had just minor issues that were promptly fixed last fall. the chair lift at the sugar loaf resort went haywire going backward and twisting the

so many changes on the roster i had a chance to catch up with one of the veterans that the coach decided to let go. todd herremans spent 10 seasons in philadelphia before being released. he's still around town and has been working out at power train in broomall but will soon head to indianapolis after signing a one year deal with the colts. they'll he'll be joined with another life long eagle that chip decided to part ways with. >> you and trent longest tenured eagles. how much turnover in one off season can a team get. >> it's been a lot but i think that, you know, you're going to see what chip wants everybody to see this season as far as having all his guys and being able to see the offense at its full potential all good things must come to an end so i had a great time in philly. >> todd and trent colry united in indianapolis. we still got awhile before the ocean open training camp so for now a little football fix. how about some soul. arena team wrapped up training camp getting ready for their

>> ♪♪ >> "action news." delaware valley's leading news program. with ducis rodgers meteorologist cecily tynan and jim gardner. >> ♪♪ >> monday night thieves target air bags in a robbery spree in the rhawnhurst section of philadelphia and they're still trying to get a plane unstuck from the mud at new castle county airport. but the big story on "action news" tonight is a collision in the mayfair section of philadelphia which has seriously injured two people. it happened this afternoon in the 7200 block of hawthorne street. a car slammed into a dirt bike knocking two people down. that's where "action news" reporter kenneth moton is live. kenneth, what are the details on this? >> reporter: well, jim we're about a block away from cottman avenue next to saint parish -- saint matthew parish and the wreckage is still on this scene. police say a young man was driving and a woman was on the

back. take a look you can see the damage caused to this tahoe when the dirt bike slammed head on into this vehicle. this is what's left of a mini dirt bike. the owner of this chevy tahoe says the driver of the bike didn't even see the collision coming because his head was turned. >> i was afraid. i couldn't see where he was am i thought he was under the truck. it was scary. >> reporter: philadelphia police say it was around 1:30 p.m. when residents in this mayfair community say the 20 something-year-old dirt bike driver was on the sidewalk and in the roadway. on the back of the bike, a young woman riding the pegs. kevin keating says he was approaching cottman avenue on the 7200 block of hawthorne street when the pair slammed right into the front of his tahoe. >> i didn't see them until the last minute and i don't know if i closed my eyes when the impact happened and i slammed my brakes. i just know he wasn't looking at me, he was looking -- looked like he was looking back towards cottman avenue and -- and next thing you know
