in the middle of the game. monday night the big story on "action news" tonight is the latest on the youth basketball coach who fired a shot but who says he acted only in self-defense. live at southwest detective headquarters is "action news" reporter, kenneth moton. dozens of teenagers in the gym, what are the details? >> jim, southwest detectives say that maurice tavares was wreckless when he fired the shot in the rec center. his attorney says he was an outsider defending against an angry mob. 26 year old maurice tavares walked into southwest detectives with his girlfriend and attorney saying his back was up against the wall firing in a rec center. >> anything regrets or anything you want to say to the kids? >> no. >> on the rec center teenagers on the court in the middle ever a basketball game.

he got into it with spectators and another coach and he pulled his gun firing once. no one hit. >> 15 to 20 people were approaching him. some had hands inside of their hoodies gesturing as if they had a firearm. others calling his name and cursing at him telling him this would be it. >> unfortunately he doesn't abide by the rules recusing cop flikts and create it. >> and they are not buying self-defense saying he would have called 911 or got help from the fire directs, anything but fire the coach. >> and directly firing the coach with the person he is about arguing with and that is wrong behavior and wrong display in front of the kids. >> and he pointed out that tavares did not stick around saturday. the man says he had a permit to carry and had his gun because he was shot in the leg while coaching a game in philadelphia about two years ago. >> he is upset, scared. by all accounts from the people we have interviewed, what he did

that day was completely within the bounds of the law. >> tavares attorney says this father of three small children works in the daycare business and had no prior criminal history until now. he is charged with aggravated assault and other offenses. reporting live at southwest detectives tonight for channel 6 "action news." >> thank you, kenneth. breaks news from plymouth township, montgomery county tonight where police are investigating the shooting of two people. the victims pulled into a luc oil on ridge pike at 9:00. they had been shot elsewhere. medics transported them to the hospital and they triering to to -- trying to determine where they were shot. and a gunman opened fire in germantown. a man in his 20s shot twice in the chest.

responding police officers got there before the ambulance and rushed the victim to einstein medical center but the victim did not survive. also late tonight philadelphia police resolved a barricade situation in west oak lane without the need for force. a man holed up in the home on 67th avenue at 7:15 possibly armed. reportedly because dhs agents were planning to come to remove seven children from the home. four of the children were out of the house by the time the police arrived tonight. but three others remained inside until the man released him. the swat officers took the man in custody without anybody being hurt. a head-on crash tonight was so severe that it sent a pick up truck right on top of a car. the two vehicles collided on the i-95 southbound off-ramp at 7:30. three women and a child in the car, and two men in the truck were all transported to the

medical center. it became a neighborhood spectacle as troopsers were on the scene to investigate. and the police are trying to track down three men who kidnapped and attacked a woman after she left jewelers road saturday afternoon. live at the parking garage where she was first abducted. >> police still looking for leads and are hoping that someone may recognize the vap that was used in the kidnapping unfolding in this parking garage over the weekend. a camera on chestnut shows the abductor's advance with gra-- van with graffiti-like markings. and see was walking to her car

school year including the death of a 19-year-old student in september. under the ban, the 86 recognized greek-letter organizations on the new brunswick campus will be allowed to hold spring formals where alcohol will be served. the victim was found buried in a shallow grave in late march. today the police identified her alleged killer. saying 30-year-old jeffery bowen stabbed 39-year-old kelly hepft to death and wrapped her body in black plastic bags and partially buried her behind a home in the 4700 block of frankford avenue. the grisly crime scene discovered march 24. the bodies of search children and their father found this morning in their maryland home. the culprit appears to have been carbon monoxide.
