mouth. >> and good friday morning to you all. we have breaking news. a deadly tornado causing widespread damage in northern illinois. >> piles of rubble left behind where homes once stood and overturned semi truck and restaurant destroyed. just some of the scenes they're sifting through right now. >> look at that. >> yeah look at that. a massive tornado touching down. now, sure it barreled through an open field but caused a lot of destruction in places as well. abc's bazi kanani with the very latest for us. >> reporter: a search and rescue operation continues this morning in illinois. at least one dead and seven injured as a tornado damaged every single building in the village. many of them destroyed. abc's alex perez is there. >> the devastation here is amazing to see how quickly this

happened. tornado, a big storm moved through here 7:15 thursday night and created all of this damage. they say -- they believe it sporadically hopped and jumped around a 50-mile stretch of the area creating a lot of damage particularly here in fairdale. >> reporter: rescuers now eager for daylight to help. >> with daylight hours to get a better accountability of all the residents that live there and make sure that any potential rescues that still need to be made are, in fact made. >> oh my gosh. that's going right through. >> reporter: the devastating twister captured on cell phone video as it moved through the area thursday evening. residents rushing to safety. >> got in and got my family in the basement. as i watched it go behind it was massive. >> reporter: a close call in rochelle. 12 people surviving in the basement of this restaurant as the tornado passed right by.

valley and the midatlantic states. high winds, large hail slight chance of a tornado through the remainder of the northeast. with travel delays. more dangerous thunderstorms throughout the carolinas and right in the gulf coast states the threat is the same damaging winds and large hail. reena and t.j. back to you. >> thanks justin. stay with abc news for the latest on today's severe weather and recovery efforts in illinois more dater in this half hour and, of course on "gma." well the u.s. census bureau had to be put on lockdown after a domestic dispute and a security guard at the agency headquarters was shot and killed by a man who was holding his wife at gunpoint in a car. the security guard had gone over to try to help. police chased the suspect back into the washington area where there was a crash and a shootout. the suspect and a police officer were wounded. investigators in south carolina have released dash cam video showing the moments before

a police officer shot and killed an unarmed black man. you can see walter scott getting pulled over by officer michael slager for a broken taillight. both are courteous. everything seems routine but shortly after slager returns to his cruiser scott darts out of the car, runs off. slager goes after him but off camera cell phone video picking up the chase. shortly after the officer's mother says she cannot bring herself to watch. >> hope god takes care of everybody involved. not only my family but the scott family because i know they're griefking just like i'm grieving so i want them to know that. >> reporter: slager's mom says she needs to support her son and insists he is not a racist. >> also this violent arrest of a suspect in southern california now the subject of several police investigations. a man fell off a horse. he had stolen.

tasered by deputies who deliver a long series of punches and kicks pummeling. it lasts about two minutes, the suspect had fled police conducting a stolen identity investigation. he stole horses and led officers on an hours-long chase. afterwards he was treated for un undisclosed injury. another american facing terror charges to fight for isis. joshua van atton is his name. he was caught before he could cross the border from turkey. the 34 from wisconsin was flown to chicago this week taken into custody at o'hare. he allegedly posted isis propaganda online and tried to recruit an 11-year-old boy. hillary clinton could announce her presidential bid as soon as this weekend. that's according to democrats familiar with her plans. exact timing unclear but it's expected through social media. the former secretary of state signed a lease for a campaign headquarters in brooklyn, new york and already has campaign staff in place. to the current holder of the

the largest power utility has been ordered to pay a record $1.6 billion fine for a deadly blast. the 2010 explosion destroyed a san bruno neighborhood near san francisco. it killed eight people and injured nearly 60 others. in levying the fine they noted a continuing pattern of safety problems at pacific gas and electric. a new investigation details the lapses in airport security we don't always hear about. associated press finds there have been nearly 27 00 perimeter breaches since 2004. san francisco airport had the most but they claim it's because they disclose the most.

cops up. >> they've been trying to check overnight but the extend tiff debris making that difficult. abc's alex perez there for us. >> reporter: authorities believe most of the home in fairdale illinois looked like this structure, completely destroyed. authorities confirm at least one tornado tore through this stretch of north central illinois about 7:15 thursday night. the twister hopping and skipping through a 50-mile area. at this point we know at least one person confirmed dead. seven others injured. at a restaurant in rochelle crew has to rescue 12 people trapped after the building completely collapsed. authorities have been working through the night and officials say they won't have a solid idea of just how severe the damage is until later today. >> our thanks to alex. much more ahead on "good morning america." meanwhile in ohio a university of dayton senior is in critical but stable condition after being struck by lightning. students and faculty held a

simple for shawn ferguson last night. the lightning strike happened at a campus parking lot. one eyewitness said he was running across it ferguson is a 23-year-old marketing major from the pittsburgh area. a new wrinkle in the case of millionaire murder suspect robert durst. it seems he's written a surprise letter to the "los angeles times." the handwritten letter discusses durst's time living in l.a. he says he hated the traffic and that his interests are opera and pro football. durst's attorney says it looks like he wrote the letter in court yesterday. durst pleaded not guilty to state weapons charges in louisiana. similar federal charges may also be filed. durst also faces a murder charge in california. >> we're getting a first look and listen to some pretty dramatic dash cam video during a school bus crash in oklahoma.
