well good thursday morning to you. we begin with the bizarre security breach at the u.s. capital. a tiny one man helicopter violating the most restricted air space in the world. >> the gyro copter touched down on the lawn of the capitol. at the controls that guy. a florida mailman, hoping to make a political point in dramatic fashion. bazi kanani in washington for us. just when you think you've seen it all in d.c. >> reporter: that pilot called his mission project kitty hawk. flying his aircraft from pennsylvania right into the no-fly zone over washington. a gyrocopter buzzing over washington and alarmd tourists. >> this is not good people.

>> reporter: heading straight towards the u.s. capitol. >> we both looked at it and said oh where the heck is that going? >> reporter: the tiny aircraft landing on the west tront lawn immediately swarmed by mis. the area on lockdown. >> get out of here now. >> reporter: while the bomb squad checked for weapons and exploess. but there was no harm intended by the pilot. >> the guy giving us a thumbs up and just flew on by. >> reporter: he's 61-year-old doug hughes. he planned to deliver letters to lawmakers. >> i would rather die in the flight than live to be 80 years old and see this country fall. >> reporter: hughes knew he could be shot down in restricted air space. he did notify secret service about his plans. agents spoke with him and a friend a year ago.

>> he wanted to too something spectacular. i was against it from the beginning and to the end because i knew how dangerous it was. >> reporter: hughes' flight within 100 feet of the capitol build ill bilding, raising new concerns about security. >> how does a individual get that close? >> reporter: his tiny aircraft was undetected at it entered the air space. norad is working to see how their systems missed it. >> can we expect security changes? what about possible charges? >> reporter: he's facing potential civil and criminal charges. possibly steep fins possibly prison time. as far as security changes, we're not shoe what those will be yet. we do know since 9/11, hundreds of millions of dollars have been spent on air defenses. did the technology fail or is there a gap in technology?

charge for a drive-by shooting in boston. he'll serve his sentence in a prison just a mile away from the patriots' stadium. police in arizona are defending the officer who slammed his squad car into a suspect. mario valencia survived the incident. the police chief defends the decision saying valencia was armed and dangerous, after going on a three-hour crime spree after robbing a 7-evenleven, stealing a gun and robbing a church. hillary clinton spent two days in iowa. she'll be flying back to new york, not driving in the now famous van of hers. that black van that's nicknamed scooby. new jersey governor chris christie says he's not ready to though his lat in the republican ring just yet. he looks like he's giving it

fast food workers fed up with low wages have taken to the streets. there were protests coast to coast yesterday. tense of thousands of demonstrators in more than 200 cities. the low-wage workers and their supporters are calling for a $15 an hour minimum wage. a legal victory for gm regarding its defective ignitions.

well the passengers could see land. they just couldn't get to it. after their puget sound ferry lost power. the boat drifted for awhile then was brought into port by a tug boat. the ferry was just put into service last summer. this thing's new. we're told it will be back in service this morning. now for a look at today's road conditions. there could be flooding and road closures in the center of the country. roads will be wet in the south and up into the ohio valley. watch for wet snow in the rockies. if you're plying, airport delays most likely in houston, new orleans denver atlanta, dallas. a wealthy new york cardiologist is accused of putting a hit on another doctor so he could steal his business. >> he first hired someone to torch the other mans a office. then he paid to have the man beaten up and then murdered.

turned out the hitman was an undercover cop. we're getting a look at the fiery end of the latest spacex rocket mission. looks like things are going well. appears to touch down safely. then it tips over and explodes. the company says it was going too fast to land safely. this is the third time spacex has tried its rocket recycling test which it believes will significantly cut the cost of space travel. we seem to have an epidemic of helicopters landing where they're not supposed to be. this is the surprise everybody gone of this beach outside san diego. the pilot brought the 100-foot chopper down after a low oil pressure light came on during a routine training mission. landing was so smooth it doesn't look like anything was wrong. people thought it was a movie shoot. they i got to it patched up quickly. it flew away a few hours later. a new york man suffered

serious burn injuries while trying to get rid of bed bugs in his rental car. he sprayed the front seat with rubbing alcohol and then lit a cigarette. the man was able to escape but not before he was burned. this happened in theoff the coast of ireland. a tourist fell about 40 feet. other tourists pulled her to safety. she was flown a hospital. she made it out and suffered a broken ankle. well swimming legend michael phelps big news. he's made it official. he does want to go to the olympics one more time. he returns to competitive swimming today. he was on a six-month suspension after a second drunken driving conviction last fall. he wants to prove he's still got it. >> i would like to show everybody in the world that -- i
