>> good morning, it is 5:00 a.m., on this monday, april 20. here's what's happening. rain, accuweather is tracking heavy soaking rain for the morning commute. family and friends gather to grieve the sudden death of a st. joe prep football player. runners lace up for the marathon days after the anniversary of the boston bombing and the bomber goes back to court. >> let's go over to david murphy and matt pellman good morning. >> reporter: we have heavy rain and in some cases it's on the steady side highlighted in yellow. we'll have ponding and pulgding on -- puddling on the roads.

it is to the west and shifting toward the east and moving up from the south. you've got it coming up from the south and sliding east at the same time. it will be with us during the morning commute. as you take a look we have more and more rain down to washington d.c. it will take from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. for the bulk of that to get through. give yourself extra time seeing we're looking at steady to heavy rain this morning and ponding is an issue on the roads. 52 in philadelphia. 48 in allentown. 56 in millville. a little bluster wind wise as the winds continue to come in off the ocean as they did yesterday, it cooled us down yesterday. 56 by 6:00. 8:00 a.m., 60 degrees, cloudy and rainy the whole time, breezy conditions. as we get into later in the day we're looking at some improvement. we get into a lull most of the day, a sprinkle or shower around

stay on the inner drive. we have a crash old york road at adams avenue and we have an electrical fire in glenside along mount carmel avenue at ciz wick avenue. -- keswick avenue. we're getting world of a downed tree in northern delaware blocking route 100 between kicker and rockland roads stay on 52 kennett pike to get around that blockage. through tomorrow morning the ramp from 168 northbound to 138 northbound will be closed in haddon township. grief counselors will be at st. joe's prep to help students and staff in need after the death of a freshman football player who died on the field during practice. annie mccormick is live with more. >> reporter: good morning, tam for most of the weekend grief

counselors were on hand to talk to students who were upset once they learned the popular well liked freshman football player who died on the feel was not coming to school monday morning. it was an emogul weekend at st. joe's prep. parents, coaches and classmates comforted each other. the head coach consoled players. friday morning during a football conditioning workout, ryan gillyard collapsed on the field in front of his teammates. his coaches worked to revive. he was rushed to temple hospital from the field and pronounced dead. his father was there on the field and at the hospital. he told "action news" off camera ryan had no preexisting million conditions and played football since third grade and played cyo basketball in havertown.

st. joe's church held a mass to honor ryan. saying ryan was a great person and someone we were proud to have as part of our community. we'll do whatever we can to support his family and friend especially the members of the freshman class and the football team of which he was a member. because he is so young so many people are asking why did he die. family members say they don't know the reason why, they can only speculate but they are waiting on autopsy results. reporting live outside of st. joe's campus, annie mccormick channel 6 "action news." >> a character struck two teenagers along the boulevard in the city's mayfair section. this happened in the southbound inner lanes north of tyson avenue at 10:00. the victim believed to be 15 and 18 years old were taken to the hospital. their injuries are not life

threatening. the honda that struck the girls kept going but later returned to the scene. a fire that tore through several row homes was sparked by a barbecue grill. viewer video shows the fire in norristown yesterday afternoon. resident said she and her husband were grilling on the back porch when the fire started. >> i'm in shock. i don't know. i can't believe. >> nobody didn't get hurt, i hold no grudges or -- >> everyone did escape out injury, but the fire, smoke and water destroyed or damaged several homes. >> the fire marshal will work to determine if the grill sparked the fire. the red cross is helping five families. 5:06. 37,000 runners trained and prepared and car bow loaded and line up for the boston marathon.

this is the second marathon since the bombing killed three spectators. the returns were treated to a pasta dinner. team 4:15 when marathon survivors were offered free enter into the race. convicted bomber dzhokhar tsarnaev will be back in court tomorrow for the first day of the trial sentencing phase. dzhokhar tsarnaev was convicted on all 30 counts that he faced. the jurors will decide whether he spends the rest of the life in prison or get the death penalty inside. the penn relays feature more than 525 races and 35 hours of competition at franklin field. let's talk about the weather. we have rain in lots of spots. >> reporter: just about everywhere at this point. storm tracker 6 live double scan shows you it is a wet morning

commute. as you take a closer look there's heavy precipitation that's coming through philadelphia, chester county delaware county and up through the heart of salem county, new jersey results are a little bit of additional spilling up through dover. basically this will be a hinderance for the morning commute with ponding and puddling on the roads. it doesn't get to the other side of it and starts to dry out until the end of the morning commute. we have cloudy skies wet conditions, of course, there's the ben franklin bridge, all we can tell you there will be slow going because of the rain that will be steady at times. 54 in wilmington. 48 in allentown. we have winds off the ocean keeping us rather cool this morning. 56 in millville, 59 in dover. the winds out of the east will turn out of the southeast and eventually the southwest and get us milder you'll see that in a moment. in terms of of the morning rain

up until 89:00 a.m. we're dealing with, and some of it could be heavy rat times. we get past the morning rush and into midday we have a lull in the action with sun returning and a couple of spotty sprinkles and showers around. there's the 3:00 p.m. view kids will need umbrellas in the morning, but not so much in the afternoon. after the evening rush hour, there's a chance of a line of thunderstorms coming through as the cold front portion of this system approaches and these storms could be strong in the evening with gusty winds. the national weather service posted the region at a moderate risk for storms that worked produce 60-mile an hour wind gusts. that means where they hit they could knock down trees and wires. there's a slight chance of an

isolated tornado in the western suburbs. anything that pops, you hear that rumble of thunder take cover because they could be strong storms late today and this evening. terms of total rainfall 1 to 2 inches on the models falling during the morning commute. allentown, a wet start late thunderstorm possible. down the shore it will be cooler, as usual with a high of 64 degrees with a rainy start possible at the shore, as well. the exclusive accuweather seven-day forecast, shows a high in philadelphia, 76 degrees, rain in the morning lull in the afternoon sun returning late day or evening gusty strong thunderstorm possible in spots. sunny and breezy on tuesday 68. back to 63 on wednesday clouds increasing and shower around in the afternoon. more clouds on thursday, high of 59. thursday appears to be dry. the sun comes back on friday.

waze app so you can see what's happening on the alternates routes. investigators say an unattended cooking fire sparked a fire in california east of la. cooler temperatures and low winds helped firefighters attack the blaze. evacuation orders were lifted before dawn yesterday. the fire is 35% contained. and firefighters got to the scene of a burning house in idaho and said they heard what sounded like calls for help inside. once they got the fire on attained they found the calls were two par rots. when the blaze broke out they started screaming fire fire, they were given oxygen, but expected to fully recover. former heisman trophy

the day later this afternoon and evening look out for strong gusty thunderstorms. as we look across the country it's in the east that's experiencing the problems today. there's chance of severe weather up and down the east coast with a moderate chance of gusty winds and large hail and slight chance of tornados, and that comes into the western suburbs. if you're heading to the airport, we're not looking at any major delays, obviously philadelphia seeing rain we'll see if that affects things later. in "healthcheck" it can be a battle to get your kids to take medicine. researchers looked at different pill swallowing techniques. several things seemed to help including flavored swallowing spray and practice with a fact fact -- with a fake pill or
