minutes ago along mohawk trail. chopper six was over the scene as the smoke and flames shot out of that house there and this is a live look right now at the scene where firefighters are being treated even as we speak. their condition is unknown at this time. of course as always we'll pass along any updates as we get them and online any time at 6abc.com. >> a philadelphia police officer shot and wounded in the line of duty is now out of the hospital. this afternoon the suspect who allegedly shot him is still recovering after the officer returned fire. it is friday afternoon i'm shirleen allicott. >> and i'm brian taff. the big story on "action news" today is the investigation into that late night confrontation. it happened around 10:15 last night near the corner of 52nd and master streets in west philadelphia. "action news" reporter david henry live at police headquarters and david you've got the latest on this today. >> reporter: yeah, brian police very much relieved that officer daniel costa was able

to go home from the hospital today. it was a very close call and he was clearly happy to be going home to his family. >> feeling good. >> reporter: the eight year veteran of the force was shot in the up are right arm last night by a suspected drug dealer. the officer was given a police escort as he left the hospital and returned home to his wife and two young sons. his commanding officer was clearly relieved and proud of the officer he calls one of his best. >> he's a hard charger, one of my bikes officers engaging in the community and addressing crime issues every night. he works at one of the toughest shifts we have 8:00 to 4:00 and hasn't taken a day off in over two years. >> reporter: the officer was on bike patrol last night when he and his partners approached a suspicious van in west philadelphia. >> when they go to stop them question the male he puts it in reverse and makes a u-turn and just drives away. >> reporter: the officer later found the van on the 5100 block of kershaw street and saw the suspect walking

down the street. he confronted the man. >> male turns to him says something to the effect of, you know, i don't want to have to do this and then he fires multiple times at the officer. >> reporter: the officer was shot but managed to get off shots of his only he hit the suspect who was found sitting on the ground a short distance away with his gun at his feet. sources say the gun had jammed or he would have gotten off more shots at the officer. the suspect has a lengthy arrest record, 13 priors in philadelphia and bucks and montgomery counties. we're withholding his name until he is formally charged. police say this guy should have been behind bars instead of out on the streets armed with a gun. >> i'm all about second chances but as commissioner ramsey says when you're talking about multiple chances then you got to question what you can really do with an individual. >> reporter: the officer is now home with his family. the suspect is in the hospital in stable condition and of course a very much relieved

police force an grateful city here tonight. live at police headquarters, david henry, channel6 "action news" shirleen. >> all right, thank you david. philadelphia police officer -- police are searching for a suspect after a chinese restaurant worker was shot while making a a delivery. the 49-year-old o was shot in the shoulder in the city's crescentville section. police say he tried to drive away but crashed and rolled down an embankment a short time later. chad pradelli has been following this story all day long. he'll have more on "action news" at 5:00. >> a mother who allegedly abandoned her quadriplegic son in the woods is now back in philadelphia and was officially charged today with attempted murder. this is the latest mug shot of nyia parler after she was extradited to philadelphia. she was arrested in maryland. police say she was there visiting her boyfriend. after she left her son who is unable to talk or walk to fend for himself in a wooded area of cobbs creek park.

in philadelphia, that's a good 12 degrees or so below normal. 54 in the lehigh valley, 43 in the poconos. and at the shore only 52 degrees. those winds still very gusty out of the west-northwest 30 miles an hour in philadelphia, clocking in at 32 in wilmington, 32 as well in the poconos and at the shore around 28 miles an hour wind gusts. high pressure is coming in from the west so those winds will ease overnight and that high bringing a crystal clear sky but that high is going to do its damage as it passes by overnight. it will somewhat relax the winds and with the clear sky we have freeze warnings in effect for basically the entire viewing area. all the areas in the light blue and a frost advisory for philadelphia county, delaware county, the entire state of delaware and also cape may county in new jersey. you want to protect the plants because this freeze that will happen between 2 o'clock in the morning and 8 o'clock in the morning could really do a lot of damage to those early season plants. brian when i come back we'll talk about a slow warmup and what the weekend has in store

terrorists who may have plotted an attack on the vatican. italian officials say back in 2010 they uncovered their plot to kill not necessarily the pope but people visiting an unspecified crowded area in rome which they believe may have been the vatican. they say the plot was called off once the militants learned they were being investigated. officials have not explained why it took five years to come forward with this but vatican officials today saying that there is no reason for concern. along with the nine people who have already been arrested officials say that warrants are out for at least nine other men. coming up tonight on "action news" at 6:00 vernon odom talks to local officials about security plans ahead of pope's visit to philadelphia in september. brian. >> all right, alicia thank you. a camden county couple was arrested after they were caught having sex just feet from a little league baseball field. now their public romp has a

community up in arms. new jersey correspondent nora muchanic live at oaklyn with the full story today. hi nora. >> reporter: hi brian. oaklyn is a quiet town under a mile square and people here are having a hard time believing this actually happened but it did. and the suspects were arrested after two eagle eyed cops who were coaching here at this park threw a curve ball to the couple engaged in public lewdness. >> in broad daylight at a baseball gamism victoria can't leave what happened. that's when two off duty cops coaching tee ball had a hard time focusing on balls and strikes because they noticed a football field away from more than 100 little kids was a couple that appeared to be engaging in sexual activity. >> nobody should be seeing that. behind closed today, it's not legal and it's not a good thing but behind closed doors would be a better place perhaps to do something like that in general. >> reporter: while one of the off duty cops confronted

the tee ballers did not see and don't know what was going on over in the woods there and for that they're thankful. live in oaklyn, i'm nora muchanic, channel6 "action news." >> all right, thank you nora. the atlantic city police department introduced a list of new initiatives to improve the quality of policing in the city. in a press conference city officials and officers shared statistics that claim the department has had fewer cases of cops using force. their goal is to better serve the people of the city. >> one of the things that we're doing, we're moving internal affairs into city hall. as the mayor said the people's house. we want to make it more convenient and accessible for anyone that may have a complaint against our officers ton make it as convenient as possible for them to report their complaints. >> reporter: officers also demonstrated how body cameras worked. they say the cameras give them a better look at an incident. >> federal officials say they've given nearly $7 billion to the state of new jersey since superstorm sandy

struck. according to fema more than half of that money went to flood insurance claims for damage or destroyed houses. hundreds of millions have been paid out to sandy survivors. the money has also gone to towns for clearing debris, restoring works and rebuilding critical facilities. >> a busy south jersey bridge has been shut down indefinitely. chopper 6hd was over the centerton road bridge in burlington county today. officials closed the bridge after an inspection uncovered a possible safety risk. the bridge spans the rancocas creek between centerton road in mount laurel and bridge street in westampton and willingboro. they say use i-295 between exchanges 43 and 45 as an alternate route. from our delaware news room a road in hockessin delaware just reopened hours after a chain of events caused a small fire to shut it down. police say a box truck veered off the road and hit a utility pole. the action cam was on the scene along mill creek road.

the crash caused wires to fall onto the roadway and that caused a small fire. the driver was not injured. >> you said that roadway is now back opened again which is good news. >> yeah. >> let's hope that continues in the "action news" traffic report. >> let's check it out. matt pelman with an update for us. >> i have sort of a copycat situation unfortunately where a vehicle ran into a pole with downed wires here in chester county brian and shirleen. that pole is leaning maybe you'll be able to see it over there. the accident right there. it's all unfolding on the northbound side of 202 between dillworthtown road and greentree drive. crews are out here trying to make repairs but they've got a lane blocked in both directions. so, just one direction of travel getting by either way here on 202 south of west chester which means especially if you're coming northbound from painter's crossing you're going to hit a solid parking lot headed up toward west chester this afternoon. several suburban accidents otherwise. one in montgomery township at dekalb pike.

"action news" traffic report. no square over there. >> no but a few hairy situations out there lead fog a little bit of a rough commute. wish we could trim down these delays for sure brian and shirleen. we're stacked on 202 northbound. can you see it through the trees. it is arbor day today. just to the right you see the stacked traffic coming northbound from painter's crossing, that's route one baltimore pike, on this point at 202 northbound up to near dillworthtown road. that's where a truck ran into a pole late this morning, took down the pole and wires. they're still out there cleaning up. just one direction of traffic getting by in each direction. so you've got delays in both directions but mainly on the northbound side of 202 through chester county. first week in the books now of the closure of the route 23 bridge in schuylkill township. you have been doing a lost detouring. as you're doing that this afternoon watch out for a crash along 29 at gray street. also one in pottstown along high street at north keim street and there's a wreck in cheltenham along church road at washington lane. on the pig picture a busy day

in delaware very picturesque shot here. you can see the blue skies above. just a few clouds. you got a runner coming down the path there and the grass finally turning green after a decent amount of rain the last couple of weeks. double scan live radar not much going on precipitation-wise. a decent amount of sunshine today but we're going to see a little rain in spots here the second half of the weekend. gusty winds today. 37 miles an hour in philadelphia redsing 38, 38 in wilmington, millville also 38 and atlantic city 35 miles an hour winds and that just added to that misery of those temperatures which are running a good 12 to 13 degrees below average right now. 54 allentown, 55 philadelphia, 52 in sea isle city. only in the 40's in the poconos with wind chills in the 20's and 30's up there today. the real depth of the clouds is still way to our north and that's where they're going to remain overnight tonight. you saw a little bit of high clouds earlier today but a decent amount of sun really

when we take these tests we don't actually do anything. we use the tutorials. one of the tutorials showed things like how to change the background color in an online test environment and it takes time away from learning math and science and english and all the things that i really enjoy learning. they can't do as much because they have to administer this test on the computer. and that's really one of the worst parts of the test.

2:30 in the 100 block of mohawk trail in medford lakes. it has since been brought under control. you can see heavy black smoke churning. the firefighter were taken to the hospital. we're told their injuries are not serious. >> officials believe the fire may have started in the kitchen but the investigation continues tonight. >> in other news philadelphia police are searching for the gunman who shot and killed a delivery man in the city's crescentville section. >> police say the 49-year-old victim was shot while making a delivery at an apartment complex. "action news" reporter chad pradelli in live in crescentsville tonight where the driver crashed his vehicle chad. >> reporter: yeah, rick we're here at adams avenue and bingham street this where the driver finally came to a stop. , see he came up here on this grass, took up some of the turf went into that fence and finally came to a stop. he was found dead by police and now they are looking for his shooter. this is the vehicle where the 49-year-old was found shot and killed around 10:30 last night. police say a dozen shots
