. >> ♪♪ >> it is 4 o'clock. we are following breaking news from baltimore mad today. this is a live look at new protests erupting right now over the death of freddie gray the man who died after he sustained injuries in police custody. now, as you can see there are police lining up alongside protesters and this is new video of the police mobilized on the streets lining up to control crowds who are throwing bottles and rocks in their direction. now the threat of violence led some businesses and schools to close early today including a mall and university of maryland baltimore campus. >> meanwhile police also announce their department received a credible threat from three gangs. those gangs are now thought to be joining forces to "take out officers. in a statement authorities told local police agencies to take precautions to ensure their officers safety. >> those demonstrations are erupting just hours after freddie gray was laid to rest

in a west baltimore church. the funeral was somber as his family called for calm. an attorney for his family also urged the arresting officer to tell the public what happened. baltimore's police commissioner says the investigation will be finished by may first. >> back here at home a neighborhood nightmare in montgomery county. a road in audubon is still shut down this afternoon, 10 hours after a deadly accident spilled a mysterious substance across an audubon road and sparked a hazmat scare. it is monday afternoon. i'm shirleen allicott. >> a busy day for sure. i'm brian taff. chopper six shows you the mess left behind after a tanker truck and a tractor-trailer crashed head on ending in a fiery explosion. a live look now from the scene as viewed from chopper 6hd right now. , see what's left on that roadway and a cleanup is expected to take hours longer. "action news" reporter david henry live at the scene. david you've got the details

right now. >> reporter: yeah, brian accident scene investigators and crime investigators have both been on the scene throughout the day trying to piece together the exact sequence of events. as you can see behind me this road remains closed as crews remain on the scene working to clean up this mess. the collision sent an early morning shock wave through this neighborhood. >> our entire floor just lit up with light and the house shook. >> reporter: it was just before 6:00 a.m. when the two trucks collided. the tractor-trailer was hauling a load of barrels filled with light powder. that powder ignited on the roads and nearby lawns. >> we came run outside and a car came running down the street yelling call 911 something blew up. something is on fire. >> reporter: first responders initially didn't know what they were dealing with so they called in a hazmat. >> residences in the media area were directed to shelter-in-place until there was a determination of the substance. >> reporter: the turned out to be a harmless smoothing agent used in cosmetics.

investigators are trying to reconstruct exactly what happened. it appears the trailer separated from the tractor-trailer and an on coming tanker truck hit it head on. the driver of that truck was killed. the other driver was uninjured. investigators are looking into the possibility that the collision itself could have caused the trailer to break loose. crime scene investigators were brought in because of the fatality. >> we have to work through and do the crash reconstruction that examined each of the points of impact and where things occurred that could potentially lead to criminal charges. >> reporter: residents of the area call this accident alley where they often hear the sounds of grinding metal and breaking glass. >> it's scary 'cause you can hear stuff. you know there's been a lot of crashes but with the big trucks traveling to and from yes, it happens a lot. >> reporter: residents say there's a lot of speeding on

this road but investigators don't know yet if that played a factor here. once again the cleanup well under way but the appearance of things they've still got a long way to go and mess will be out here through the evening rush hour. live in audubon david henry channel6 "action news" news. shirleen. >> one person in custody after an employee was attacked at a delaware county school. it happened just before 10:00 this morning at the jack barack hebrew academy in radnor township police say it started with a confrontation in the cafeteria and ended in a stabbing. "action news" reporter annie mccormick is live at the school with the details. annie. >> reporter: and shirleen we've actually moved to radnor police headquarters and that is where the suspect is in custody. at this point police have not released his name but we do know that he was a former employee of the school. it's not clear though if he was previously fired or what was behind the altercation. this afternoon we have also learned from school officials

that the employee who let him on campus inside the building this morning has been fired. you can see the bandage on the right hand of the suspect brought into radnor police for this morning's stabbing at jack m barack hebe about academy. police say he suffered cuts on his hands after stabbing the victim. just before 10:00 a.m. police say the former kitchen worker gained access to a bus entrance after an employee recognized him and letter him in. the suspect confronted a current kitchen employee in there cafeteria. >> that dispute escalated into a situation where the former employee then took out a knife and stabbed the current employee. after he stabbed him he then fled on advertisement the victim suffered head and neck wounds and the suspect allegedly threw bleach in his face but the victim was conscious and talking. police learned the suspect fled on the septa high speedline. authorities stopped the train in haverford where he was taken into custody. police recovered a knife believed to be used in the crime. school officials say children were not near the incident and

the school reacted quickly. >> immediately activated the pass which is a direct line to the police department initiating the police response and they also went into a lockdown and they followed procedures in a very expeditious manner. >> reporter: in response to how the suspect gained access school officials through an e-mail said in part everyone in the barack campus is aware of our security pro calls and found in circumstances are students or staff permitted to let someone in who does not have a school id. the individual who breached this protocol was resealed -- released of duties effective immediately. at this hour the victim remains at penn presbyterian hospital. reporting live in radnor annie mccormick channel6 "action news." >> annie thanks very much. 29-year-old charnae lee of city of philadelphia now facing multiple charges after police say she locked her four children in the basement. police found the kids at a home in the city's kensington

section yesterday afternoon after one of the children called 911. the kids told officers they were told by their mother to get in the basement and stay there. in the basement, though, they had no access to food running water or a bathroom. sarah bloomquist has more on the charges the mother is now facing coming up at 4:30. >> in delaware now state fire officials have arrested three men in connection with this arson last year which destroyed a historic home. that home was built back in 1871. firefighters said the damage would top $200,000. today the state fire marshal said two teens an 19-year-old were taken into custody. they've all been released on $15,000 bond. >> officials are calling the devastation from saturday's earthquake in nepal staggering. this afternoon more heartache as the death toll continues to rise surpassing 4,000 people and that number continues to go up. right now more than 7,000

people have been injured as well. rescuers are desperately digging through the rubble and they are still finding survivors. the 7.8 magnitude quake struck saturday in katmandu. families there continue to feet wave of aftershocks. aid from all around the world is on its way but terrible conditions are getting in the way of delivery. the united nations just announcing it has released $15 million in aid funds and also just this afternoon 150 miles away on mount everest roughly 210 climbers are being evacuated with 300 more still awaiting rescue after the quake triggered a massive avalanche. >> this whole tent was just moving with the wind and the snow being pelted into it. >> it was incredibly terrifying. >> reporter: one of the climbers who has been rescued so far. 18 people were killed other world's highest mountain including four americans. to spare his life in the courtroom behind me by convincing the jury he is battling mental illness. he will be shackled to the floor during this trial which is expected to last at least four months. brandy hip abc news centennial colorado. >> residents in the deep south are cleaning up after severe storms ripped through the area. watch as a freight train is pushed off the tracks by high winds near new orleans tumbling to the ground below. no one was hurt. it was a similar situation if texas. those storms brought more than a dozen tornadoes and miles of damage. entire roads were wiped weigh in the heavy rain and winds. roofs were ripped off farms and entire plots of land were destroyed. so far there are no reports of any serious injuries. >> ♪♪ >> (bell). >> there we go to business now, the avengers united on

wall street today to open the trading day in new york. you see robert downey jr. jeremy renner among others ringing the opening bell after the movie made more than $200 million in international theaters over the weekend. the avengers age of ultron hit theaters in the u.s. this week and i had a chance to sit down with the entire cast in hollywood. you can see my interviews beginning wednesday right here on "action news" and to the closing numbers today a down day across-the-board on wall street. the dow losing 42 points, the nasdaq dropping 31 points and the s & p 500 also losing eight points on the day. chipotle is the first major restaurant chain to say its food is gmo free. that means none of the ingredients in its food or anything used to make that food has been genetically modified. chipotle was the first restaurant to identify gmo's on the menu. gas prices spiked about 5 percent nationwide in the

past two weeks. they're at their highest point so far this year. but still much lower than this time one year ago. taking a look at the gas prices now today in philadelphia you're paying $2.74 a gallon, in south jersey $2.37 in delaware $2.48 with a national average at $2.54 but if you take a look at this time last year, oh, at this time last month rather you see that we're paying a little bit more. just about 25 cents more there per gallon. experts say the spike in prices is due to higher oil prices and the higher cost of summer gas blends so you'll pay a little bit more as you fuel up but doing better than we did last year. so win-win maybe. i don't know, shirleen. >> you know, i'll take it as a victory i guess. thanks alicia. recycling just got easier for tens of thousands of new jersey residents thanks to new technology. the recycling center in mount holly has a new single stream system capable of sorting

people's trash. this will allow residents to place paper plastic cardboard glass steel and aluminum all in one bin. everything is later separated with state of the art machines and along with helping the environment the center is also helping dozens of workers achieve success. 55 people with disabilities are employed through the occupational training center of burlington county. >> it's a job where they can do some easy work sorting materials and it is challenging, challenging for a nondisabled person and it really benefits them and makes them happy at the end of the day. >> 162,000 households are served by this recycling sent across burlington county. it is time for that accuweather forecast. >> yeah, let's get over to meteorologist adam joseph, see if the clouds we can kick them out of here. >> the clouds are going to hang around overnight. the good news is the clouds you see over the center city skyline from our temple university sky six camera not going to release much in the

way of rainfall but with that wind out of the northwest and the lack of sunshine this afternoon, another very chilly day. in fact, the fifth day in a row where temperatures have been below that normal of around 68, 69 degrees. it's only 59 right now in philadelphia, 60 in millville even allentown much cooler coming in at 55 degrees right now. and those winds continue to drain out of the northwest speeds 17 at the boardwalk 16 miles an hour in philadelphia lancaster mimicking that number and dover also at 16 miles an hour. there's a big low pressure center that low pressure center is just to the east of bangor maine. you can see the rain showers even mixed snow showers in the higher terrain of northern new england and a batch of showers west of harrisburg and the western part of pennsylvania, so we're kind of split in between those two areas of rain but again those colder winds and clouds are moving in from the north. thankfully we don't have the severe weather that they've been dealing with for the last 24 to 36 hours.

storms that blasted through southern texas also moved through new orleans earlier today. you can see kind of the bow bow-ish neighbor of the storms. shirleen showed us video where the trains that were derailed because of powerful winds that moved through southern louisiana throwing those train cars off of that high bridge. locally quiet at home tonight a-chilly breeze, a lot of clouds temperatures dropping to around 46 degrees in philadelphia and tomorrow temperatures will make a jump above normal here, first time again in almost over a week or so, 70 in philadelphia, 68 in allentown. even at the shore tomorrow temperatures in the mid to the upper 60's with that sunshine. tuesday is going to feel pretty nice around here. but we still have those pollen levels to speak of for the next two days with the lack of rain. we've got oak birch and maple pollinating right through wednesday, dipping a little on

unsealed report on pennsylvania attorney general kathleen kane. what the grand jury believes she did straight ahead. >> and she made it through the biggest fight of her life only to be dealt another devastating blow. why a little girl battling cancer was kicked out of the only school she's ever known for missing too many days. >> plus, he lost his life while trying to make a living. now four days after that chinese food delivery driver was gunned down police have arrested two people in connection to the murder and they're not even old enough to drive. >> but we begin at 4:30 in philadelphia's kensington section where a mother accused of locking her children in basement as punishment is facing punishment of her own. charnae lee has been charged with four counts related to child endangerment this after one of her kids called 911 yesterday saying their mom left them al loan for more than 12 hours without food water or a bathroom. "action news"'s sarah bloomquist live outside special victims unit. sara you've got the details

here. >> reporter: brian that's right 29-year-old charnae lee remains in police custody after she allegedly locked her four children in that basement for more than 12 hours. she faces a long list of criminal offenses. mao a police source tells me they believe she has done this before to discipline her kids but never left them for quite so long. charnae lee is charged with four counts of unlawful restraint false imprisonment endangering the welfare of a child and recklessly endangering another person. police say sometime saturday she locked her four children in the basement of the family's home in the 1900 block of east atlantic street in kensington without access to food or a bathroom. she allegedly gave the children a cell phone that could only call 911 in case of an emergency and that's what they did. eventually. around 1:30 p.m. yesterday one of the kids called for help. firefighters were able to get into the row home through a second floor bedroom window and open the front door.

once inside, police went to the basement and brought out a 13-year-old boy his nine-year-old brother and his sister's ages 12 and 10. neighbors said lee was working going to school and the single mom was doing the best she could to support her family. >> she's a very disciplined mom. we never really know what goes on behind closed doors but from what i saw outside, she was a good mom. you know, i'm like one of the ones that's like really extremely shocked of what's going on. >> reporter: now after the children were discovered lee was picked up by police at her job at an airport hotel. she has told them that she didn't know the door to the basement was locked but investigators aren't buying it. they have questioned her. one source told me they don't think she wanted anything to do with her children. live in hunting parks i'm sarah bloomquist, channel6 "action news." >> sarah, thank you. they aren't old enough to

drive. philadelphia police take two teenagers were old enough to take part in the murder of food delivery driver. 14-year-old shamir walker has been charged with killing 49-year-old rendong zheng last thursday night. his alleged accomplice tyquail duffy is facing charges including aggravated assault. police say zheng was delivering. police say the teenagers intended to rob zheng but nothing was taken. police say two criminals posed as philadelphia water department workers during a robbery in torresdale today. one suspect knocked on a woman's front door in the 3800 block of linden avenue while a second suspect entered through the back of the house and stole items from upstairs. police are still looking for both men. no one was hurt. >> for the first time now we are getting a look today at a grand jury report that accuses

pennsylvania's attorney general of engaging in a coverup and lying about her role in alleged and illegal leaks. now, in stark language, and right here in black and white in this report today it says this. we find that the testimony of kathleen kane was not in honest account of events and that she mischaracterized events to cover up activities unlawfully under taken at her own direction. now t-the release that of full report today comes three months after we first became aware that a grand jury recommended charges against kathleen kane. that grand jury was looking into whether she leaked the details of an investigation of a political rival. now, those leaks would have violated state secrecy laws. back here at the big board this is a list of the charges that the grand jury recommended including perjury false swearing, abuse of office obstruction of justice and contempt of court. montgomery county d.a. risa furman must now decide whether to formally file any of these

charges and now furman has yet another charge to weigh. a judge in the court of common pleas ruled today that a separate case can move forward against kane. now in case kane is accused of firing a prosecutor in her office after that prosecutor testified against her. so, now the list of possible charges against kane includes official oppression and retaliation. shirleen, kane's office issued a one line response this afternoon maintaining her innocence on all the charges in each of the cases now against her. into the good day for kathleen kane. shirleen. >> absolutely not. thank you brian. residents say it's a matter of life and death. one local community is outraged stray bullets continue to fly through their lehigh valley neighborhood. >> ♪♪ >> we are continuing to follow our breaking news out of baltimore, maryland. this is a live look right now as protests continue in regards to the death of freddie gray, the man who died after he sustained injuries -- and this is video from moments earlier. >> that's right, you can see protesters stomping o and that police car there, smashing in the windows. this just happened moments ago in the streets of baltimore maryland where massive crowds have been gathering all day

long. it's been intensifying in just the last several minutes and you can see the intensity with which they are beating that police car. it is unclear at this point if an officer was in the car at the time but we can tell you this. seven officers have been injured in the clashes today. one of them described to us as unresponsive. in fact others have broken bones and we do have another piece of video to show you. the swat team moving in in the moments after that police car was smashed to bits. you could see that crowd disbursing. all of this comes in the context of increasing hostility and tension. we learned today that several gangs have made threats against baltimore police threatening to quote take them out. so there is heightened tension on the streets of baltimore, maryland today and this protest over the death of freddie gray escalating even at this hour. of course we'll have much more on this throughout the hour this afternoon. alicia. >> all right and over here at the big board now with the big talkers. we start in michigan with the story of a 12-year-old girl

named rose mcgrath who battled leukemia won. well she's now waging another fight, just to go to school. you see saint joseph middle school the only school she's ever known is dismissing her. why? for failing to meet academic and attendance standards. you see she missed a lot of classes and her grades suffered while she underwent chemotherapy. >> not really fair 'cause i didn't do anything wrong. but they still got rid of me. >> well, rose says it's the one place where she feels normal. the school says it tried to work with her and made many accommodations. now recommending maybe home schooling as the best option. the family, though, feels that's school failed them. to say a management professor at texas a & m university wasn't afraid to hand out f's is an understatement he failed his entire class every last student. here's what led to irwin

delaware state line you start to jam at 452 through this point at 332. that travel time rapidly on the increase. meanwhile in center city a vehicle broke down on the vine street expressway in the work zone. eastbound by 23rd street so that's restricting traffic causing big delays coming off of the schuylkill expressway. speeds are dropping there as well. and by the way warning for you nights this week tonight through wednesday night on the vine they're going to be working eastbound so starting at 10:00 you want to avoid that eastbound side of 676. the crash on the pennsylvania turnpike eastbound by fort washington is now off to the side. so, things are getting a little bit better but then we still have slow speeds coming away from mid-county. warminster watch out for a crash along york road at street road by the eagle diner crash in lower moreland along hunting pike has cleared. south park avenue remains closed because of the mess from this morning. stay on egypt road or up on sunny side avenue as some alternates. we'll check it again brian and shirleen coming up in the 5 o'clock hour. >> all right very good, matt. see you shortly. meteorologist adam joseph

so that is at least one good thing going this afternoon. 55 in allentown, 57 in wilmington so temperatures once again five days in a row below average. only 48 degrees in the poconos and millville the warm spot at 60. all the clouds are pushing in from the north and northwest. a large low in eastern new england. a batch of showers in western pennsylvania, they will remain there as they sink towards virginia. we're kind of sandwiched in between other showers to the north so at least on the dry side of things here. overnight a lot of clouds, a chilly breeze 41 in the suburbs, fifty six degrees for suspect. winds stay up between eight and 16 miles an hour overnight. then high pressure comes in, pushes that low away. sunshine returns and stays breezy out of the north-northwest 10 to 20 miles an hour tomorrow. but we will excel those temperatures into the upper 60's. that high begins to weaken a little bit but couple areas of low pressure to the west will stay to the west on wednesday. just a few clouds midweek. how does 74 degrees sounds a
