baltimore all day long. a massive protest in the streets of that city turned violent today following the funeral of freddie gray. this is earlier video from the funeral and what happened afterwards. more than half a dozen police officers injured in the melee. it's been described as an absolute war zone on the streets of baltimore tonight. >> that's right. police in riot gear have been trying to hold off demonstrators who have been throwing rocks bricks and bottles at police in that riot gear. at least seven officers have been hurt one of them seriously and that one is reportedly unresponsive. >> there have been reports of trash cans being set on fire and as we mentioned a police cruiser as well. protesters have also as we mentioned destroyed a police cruiser. officers eventually able to move in and make at least one arrest today. the crowd is disobeying orders from police to disperse. >> it is coming after a chaotic scene outside the shiloh baptist church this afternoon. freddie gray's casket was carried from the church to a hearse.

about 3,000 people attended inside that service. as you know gray died a week ago from a severed spine that he suffered while in police custody. we'll have much more on all the protests coming up for you on "action news" at 5:30. we'll keep an eye on it throughout. >> also breaking news tonight. closer to home pennsylvania's highest court has reinstated the child endangerment conviction of monsignor william lynn. the ruling up holds the 2012 conviction of lynn concerning an abuse case committed by a diocesan priest years ago. he was the first u.s. church official sent to prison over his handling of sexual abuse complaints against priests. his lawyer argues lynn was not directly responsible for the child's welfare but today the state supreme court ruled lynn can be held responsible. he served half of his three to six year sentence but has been on house arrest since the superior court threw out his conviction in 2013. >> in other news residents in a lehigh valley say their lives are in danger by stray

bullets flying into their neighborhood. >> they say bullets have hit there are homes and landed in their backyards and they believe they're coming from a nearby gun club. lehigh valley correspondent walter perez is live in the neighborhood tonight with more on the story. walter. >> reporter: rick, we tried reaching out to officials from the stock card town ride and gun club located down this road right here but they kicked us off the property all while people who live on the far side the range say sometimes it feels like the bull's eye is on their community. >> they have been hitting the house, flying over our heads. >> reporter: eric foles is talking about bullets they certainly believes are coming from the stock card town rod and gun club firing range less than half a mile away. foles says it's gotten so bad he will no longer allow his children to play outside when the range is opened. >> my older son and his friends were down along the edge of the bank just messing around and next thing you know there's bullets bouncing off the trees next to their heads.

the foles aren't the only ones with concerns. several neighbors and businesses in this area have been complaining about bullets landing on their properties for years. thomas says he never found a bullet but he is sure the damage done to his truck a few years ago was the result of a stray shot. >> and i found a big garb in the center of my windshield that was about approximately that big. didn't go through the windshield but it was like grazed. you can actually lay your pinkie right in the hole. >> reporter: now local police have been notified but the problem is there is no way of knowing for sure if the shots are coming from the range or from rogue hunters milling around this rural patch of northampton county. foles an avid gun owner himself does not want the gun club shut down but he says nearly every bullet that landed in his neighborhood was traveling from the direction of the range. his hope is that the gun club officials will put in added safeguards before it's too late. >> how much does it cost to put up a couple of wireless cameras and have them hook

them to a computer system to see who is actually down on the range? how hard is it to put a log book up down there? >> reporter: now neighbors say they evenhanded in bullets to the stocker town police department but still little progress has been made in this case. now, the local force is primarily a part-time department and no one was available for comment. we also want to emphasize that as of this time, no injuries have been reported, at least not yet. reporting live from stocker town, walter perez, channel6 "action news. >> all right walter, thank you. a road in montgomery county remains closed tonight after two trucks collided and burst into flames killing one driver. police say a tanker and a tractor-trailer crashed around 6:00 a.m. on south park avenue in audubon. the trailer's cargo, drums of dry cosmetic powder spilled over the roadway and then ignited. the tanker truck was carrying raw sewage. the driver killed in the crash has not been identified. officials say it's too early to know if any charges will be filed. >> a former employee at a main

line hebrew school is under arrest tonight and another has been fired for letting the suspect in after a brutal attack in that school. it happened at 9:30 this morning at the jack barack hebrew academy. ivan moore a former employee stabbed a worker in the cafeteria following an argument and threw bleach in his face. the victim was rushed to the hospital with head and neck wounds. the suspect then ran to the septa line in nearby haverford township where police arrested him. no children were in danger during the incident. >> a number of dead from that earthquake in nepal has soared past 4,000 tonight. this even as rescue workers struggle to reach mountain village in the hard et hit area. >> there's word from the state department that at least four americans have died in the quake. abc news reporter marci gonzalez life in new york with more on that. >> reporter: rick and monica all for of them were on mount everest where rescues have

still under way. this is was the worst earthquake in nepal in 80 years and the death toll just keeps climbing. two days of desperation people still buried in the rubble of saturday's 7.8 magnitude earthquake. rescuers in nepal digging with bear hands and raw determination finding survivors and many more victims. the death toll now surpassing 4,000. the intense aftershocks still rattling katmandu. >> really moving us. >> reporter: families are sleeping outside afraid more buildings will crumble. at the airport thousands trying to escape are stranded with most flights canceled. >> tote cal chaos. >> reporter: the epitome of chaos though hit mount everest. the earthquake setting offer this massive avalanche that barreld into base camp. many of the injured and

(applause). >> reporter: with the papal visit to philadelphia five months away, the world meeting of families wants 10,000 volunteers to serve as guides ambassadors to help the millions of pilgrims expected to converge on the city for that week in september. you must be 18 years old or over. they need 10,000 to sign up. >> we need you. we need you to assist visitors with directions, to welcome them at philadelphia international airport and at 30th street station. >> reporter: officials say it will take four and a half minutes to go to the web site and sign up. then there will be a 24 to 48 hour wait for security clearance. >> philly volunteers will be the face of the world. the world meeting of families congress and papal visits will be extraordinary moments in

evening's ride home seems like a walk in the park. but it's still not a walk in the park. here on 476 northbound side we're locked up from the schuylkill expressway through this point approaching the mid-county tolls. it's because of that crash on the pennsylvania turnpike eastbound side at fort washington off to the side but damage is done. still heavy delays on the eastbound side of the turnpike, the northbound side of the blue route and those speeds in the teens even spilling back onto the westbound side of the schuylkill expressway. also in plymouth meet, we're watching a crash along germantown pike approaching the blue route. meanwhile this is the scene in center city, getting a little bit better. that broken down vehicle on the eastbound side of the vine right about here has cleared out. still just sluggish traffic in both directions. and it's still crowded on 95 in delco northbound side from 452 through this point up to 322 but the crash there has also cleared. still definitely not clear is the scene from this morning's major mess in lower providence montgomery county. south park avenue shut down for the time being between egypt road and ridge pike. you can stay down on egypt

>> loretta lynch has been sworn in as the nation's 83rd attorney general. she was sworn in at a justice department ceremony by vice president joe biden. lynch replaces eric holder who left the job after six years. lynch was confirmed by the senate last week following a month's long delay after her nomination got caught up in a dispute over human trafficking legislation. she's the first african-american woman to hold the post. >> all right, thanks sharrie. now health check tonight. for the first time in 50 years the government is lowering the recommended amount of fluoride

added to water. >> health reporter and registered nurse ali gorman at the big board with more. ali. >> the reason they started adding fluoride to water in the 60's is because it helps preventer cavities and tooth decay but now that fluoride is added to other products like toothpaste and mouthwash some people are getting too much. and too much fluoride in some cases has led to white splotches on kids' teeth. one study found two out of five teenagers have those splotches and this change has been in the works for several years and now the fda is also asking bottled water companies to lower their fluoride levels as well. also today strokest is the third leading killer of women but a new survey shows that many women still think of it as a man's disease. the survey of 1,000 women shows most women don't know the basic signs and even fewer know symptoms specific to women. now those include more

>> ♪♪ >> ford is recalling nearly 400,000 vehicles because of faulty latches that can cause the doors to fly opened while being driven. the recall is for 2012 through 2014 ford fiestas, fusions and lincoln mks sedans. there have been 207 complaints to the national traffic highway safety administration. of course there were 65 instances in which doors flew opened. two injuries have been reported. dealers will replace all four door latches at no cost to the owner. it's a first for a major restaurant chain tonight.

chipotle says it is now gmo free. that means none of the ingredients will be genetically modified for tortillas rice chips and salsa and also in the marinades used to cook its meat and the cooking oil has been switched from soy been oil to gmo free sunflower oil and rice brand oil. >> pennsylvania governor tom wolf took his jobs that pay tour to montgomery county today. this afternoon he stopped by m and s centerless grinding in hatboro. he delivered a message about the importance of rebuilding the middle class. he has been traveling the state asking businesses what they need from his administration in order to create jobs and better train workers. bio metric screening typically involves getting a fingerprint or your dna but these days you may be giving up something just as valuable and not even know it. here's a preview of our special report. >> reporter: tonight facial recognition technology is out there right now. it is collecting data from sources you may not even know

meteorologist cecily tynan at the big board. how was the weekend. >> my weekend, it was fine thank you. how was yours. >> it was too quick. >> they always are. >> besides the point. >> the weather was nice this weekend. we say a good amount of sunshine. it was on the chilly side. sky six now our temple university camera showing that we've got a lot of clouds upper level disturbance swinging to our west providing the clouds and the cooling temperature. right now 58 degrees in philadelphia. we touched 60 earlier this afternoon. 68 is the normal high for this time of year though. so our fifth day in a row with temperatures on the cool side. allentown 56, wilmington 58, millville 59 and trenton 58 degrees and also a breezy day. winds currently about 15 to 20 miles per hour. generally out of the northwest. satellite6 along with action radar showing the set upmany we still have the strong low near new england. it's just sitting there. it's actually retrograding a little which means moving to the west and then there's an upper level feature that's

diving down to our west and that's what has the showers associated with it. i don't know we'll be seeing the showers here but plenty of cloud cover in the overnight hours before high pressure finally builds in and brings us a return of sunshine. but far down to the south i want to point out this complex of storms that blew through louisiana this morning. this is the same system responsible for 21 reports of tornadoes in texas yesterday. and that has some straight line winds near new orleans that were so powerful train cars, 11 of them, this is an elevated track and they were literally just blown off the track. they're on the ground here and they had winds reported more than 70 miles per hour at the airport in new orleans and certainly lot stronger with those straight line winds and that system will become a coastal storm later in there week. looks like that will just be missing us to the south. tonight lots of clouds, a chilly breezy, another cool night, 46 trees in philadelphia, 41 in millville 41 in allentown and 42 in reading. future tracker showing tomorrow much warmer than

today. good amount of sunshine. by 3:30 up to 69 degrees in philadelphia most of our region in the upper 60's and by wednesday we should be cracking the 70-degree mark so it's looking very nice for the middle of the week. so, the five day at 5:00 tomorrow plenty of sunshine, milder. it will be seasonable, 69 degrees. on wednesday probably the nicest day of the week. 74 degrees a lot of sunshine. on thursday with that low pressure off the coast we get a flow out of the northeast. that will bring in clouds with a few showers 65 degrees. even a little bit cooler on friday. still unsettled with clouds and a couple of showers, 63 but sunday back into the 70's. 70 degrees with a lot of sunshine for the union game. if you want it warmer adam joseph will have some good news for you in the accuweather 7-day forecast. my pool is opened after all. >> can i come over. >> all right there you go. >> thank you cecily. much more to come in the neck half hour of "action news" at 5:00 we're continuing to honor the situation unfolding right now baltimore

>> ♪ ♪ >> "action news" at 5:00 continues right now with a developing story out of baltimore. a city on the edge of chaos following the funeral of freddie gray the man who died in police custody earlier this month. protesters and police have clashed in several neighborhoods this afternoon a dangerous sign of what may lie ahead. >> a short time later dozens of protesters swarmed a police cruiser parked in the street. they tore it apart. once authorities showed up the protesters scattered but at least one of the vandals was taken down by authorities. baltimore police officers in riot gear mobilized around the city tonight but the situation quickly getting out of control. at least seven officers have been injured. >> that as word surfaces the city's three gangs may be plotting a siege against police. abc's karen travers live in baltimore with the very latest. karen. >> reporter: good afternoon. a ugly scene a few blocks from here. this is the chump where freddie gray's funeral took place earlier today.

police clashing with large groups of one people outside of a mall. some were throwing rocks some bricks and seven officers were injured. this is a very different scene than what we saw earlier today here at the funeral where freddie gray's family and friends mourned the loss and called for calm. some people who showed up here today said they didn't even know freddie gray but they wanted to be here to show support and outrage for his death. police clashed with teenagers gathered at a mall in west baltimore this afternoon. some in the crowd were throwing bricks. one baltimore police officer was injured. the demonstrations came just hours after an emotional funeral service for freddie gray. >> ♪♪ around 3,000 people packed a church in west baltimore to mourn freddie gray who died a week ago from injuries sustained while in custody of the baltimore police. >> reason why i want you to not to cry is because freddie's death is not in vain. after this day, we going to keep on marching.

>> reporter: a lawyer for the 25-year-old's family drew the large crowd to its feet when he said the six baltimore police officers implicated in this incident should tell the public exactly what happened. >> this is our moment to get at truth. this is our moment to make it right. >> reporter: baltimore's police commissioner said the department's internal probe will be finished by may first. so far five of the six officers have spoken to investigators. gray's family calls for calm after saturday's demonstrations in downtown baltimore that turned violent. >> freddie's death is going the light a match not a looting and burning but of awesome change. >> reporter: it was a message sprinkled throughout the service. how this tragedy can be used to bring about changes in communities so desperate for them. >> we don't need more policemen, we need more jobs, job training, education. we need what other people need.

>> reporter: the pastor that eulogized freddie gray earlier today just moments ago urging calm and telling people to get off the streets. this is not the way to take their message and get it out there. but earlier today some schools and businesses in the baltimore area closing early just in case of any demonstrations. reporting live from baltimore p, karen travers, channel6 "action news." rick monica. >> thank you karen. let's take you back live there. you're looking at another car that has been set on fire. we don't know if this second vehicle is also a police cruiser like we showed you at the beginning of the broadcast but this is behind that cvs pharmacy where a group had gathered and there had been possible reports of looting at the cvs. now you're taking a look at the city where officers have been trying desperately to calm down this dangerous situation. for hours rioters took to the streets in protest over the death of gray the man who died in police custody more than a week ago. numerous clashes have broken out and we've seen several cruisers as we said torched. one was completely destroyed. now that other car we just showed you bering at least

seven police are injured, one was unresponsive. we do know there have been some arrests but we don't know exactly how many but still a situation out of control right now. world news tonight with david muir will have more on the dangerous situation in baltimore tonight stemming from the death of freddie gray and you can watch that following "action news" at 6:00. >> in other news tonight, two young teenagers are now facing charges in the death of a food delivery driver. 14-year-old shamir walker has been charged with killing 49-year-old rendong sang sang last thursday night. his alleged accomplice tyquail duffy is facing charges including aggravated assault. police say sang making a deliver to crescentville. police say the teens intended to rob him but nothing was taken. >> details now on a major drug ring that was busted inside a chester county prison.

and a corrections officer is now facing serious charges. "action news" was there as that officer douglas keck was brought n police say keck passed heroin and prescription drugs to inmates charging them $100 per delivery. keck allegedly brought his four-year-old son on one of those drug deals. he's since been fired and faces a list of charges including conspiracy and endangering the welfare of a child. seven others were also charged including a cvs pharmacy employee. police say two criminals posed as philadelphia water department workers during a robbery in torresdale today. one suspect knocked on a woman's front door on the 3800 block of linden avenue while a second suspect entered through the back of the house and stole items from upstairs. police are still looking for both men. no one was injured. philadelphia's northeast detectives are looking for a credit card thief who targeted a lawndale plan netter

fitness. this is surveillance video of the suspect inside the location along the 500 block of adams avenue back on the 15th of the month. the victim told police he just finished his workout when he noticed his wallet and other items were missing from his locker. well, its man's bank tracked his card to the rite-aid across the street on rising sun avenue where the suspect allegedly purchased several items. we've got the suspect's video and his picture here and if you have any information about the crime or who the suspect is you're asked to call philadelphia police. we've also posted this surveillance video on our web site at 6abc.com. so you can also get a better look on our web site. over to monica. >> thank you sharrie. three teenagers are now facing felony charges for allegedly setting a fire that gutted a home in delaware. police say 19-year-old corey woolwich and two other teens ages 15 and 16 set this fire in the 1400 block of milltown road in mill creek last november. the home which was built in

1871 was destroyed. although suspects face felony arson burglary and other charges. a crash is causing traffic trouble on 95 in tinicum township. chopper 6hd overhead. it happened at 2:45 in the northbound lanes near route 4420. two vehicles were involved. you can see a van there flipped on its side. now uprighted. two lanes of northbound traffic are getting by at this hour. >> no one was seriously hurt after a car hit the wall of a business in philadelphia's somerton section. chopper 6hd was above the scene on the 700 block of red lion road shortly after the car was removed this morning. the driver is not seriously hurt in the crash. no word yet what may have caused the driver to crash into the wall. >> all right, time to get a check of the traffic scene on a monday night with matt. >> matt pelman has an update on the commute home tonight. matt. >> yeah, hope you're not looking for a pleasant update on the schuylkill expressway 'cause it's not so nice. westbound side stacked solid rick and monica the whole way from the roosevelt boulevard through this point at the

conshohocken curve out to the blue route, 52 minutes on that westbound travel time. should be 14 minutes. we're in the even close. it's because of that earlier crash on the eastbound side of the pennsylvania turnpike at fort washington caused the big delays on the eastbound side of 276 that spilled onto the northbound side of the blue route that spilled back onto the westbound side of the schuylkill. hey, speaking of that westbound schuylkill, the next couple nights they're going to be doing construction during the overnight hours westbound from gulph mills to 202 in king of prussia. so expect delays then as well. and there's a crash in plymouth meeting along germantown pike. also a new one along egypt road at pine town road in lower providence. problematic because we've been saying use egypt road instead of south park avenue today that remains closed and the tacony palmyra bridge up right now for an opening and for the betsy -- head for the betsy ross instead. rick and monica back to you. people who repreordered an apple watch have started getting their deliveries. consumer reports got six of the eight it purchased and immediately began testing them. here's "action news" consumer

reporter nydia han with the initial results. >> ♪♪ >> reporter: apple announced the release date of its watch in march with great hoopla. now deliveries have begun and consumer reports has the watches in its test labs. the apple watch comes in a variety of styles. the sport is made of light weight aluminum with hardened glass. the stainless steel version has a sapphire crystal. they face the same consumer report tests all smart watches test. >> durable is important many you can protect a smartphone with a case. it is exposed to the elements. >> reporter: this test checks how hard a scratch it can endure. most are scratched by the equivalent of a steel nail. the apple sport proved tougher and the sapphire crystal on the steel watch is better with the scratch resistance of a luxury watch. >> if you're going to spend a lot of money on a smart watch you want to know it can handle some abuse. >> reporter: both versions were also in a pressurized

very strong winds to new orleans today. check out this dash cam video. you can see a freight train going by up there on an elevated track on the hughey p long bridge. the high winds suddenly push several cars right off the track to the ground below. did you see that? and the light sparks. the cars were damaged as they hit the ground. the strong winds are also kicking up the waves on lake pontchartrain. the high winds caused officials to close down the historic pontchartrain cause way twice already today. >> teacher in washington state is being hailed a hero after tackling a student who opened fire on campus today. no one was hurt after the 16-year-old fired two shots in the air before classes at north thurston high school. students were dismissed after police swept the school for more weapons. the teen gunman was arrested and taken into police custody. >> time for sports. eagles ready to add to their roster today. let's find out more. >> jaime apody is live in the "action news" sports center with more on the draft this thursday.

thanks jamie. saddam hussein to report here tonight. a little massachusetts boy who was battling cancer and who's special birthday went viral last summer has suck summed to his disease. six-year-old danny nick kerr son died of a rare bring tumor. last july he had one request to receive birthday cards for his birthday. 279 campers at the international sports center in cherry hill helped to fulfill that wish. danny's mom says that helped cheer him up. she says danny died on friday at home after a courageous 18 month battle with cancer. we just had the best family vacation. really? there were fights breaking out in the street, angry mobs the whole place was like a war zone. it was fantastic! what about the kids? we shackled them to a post in the middle of town. i don't know what they loved more the shackling or the pool. my money's on the shackling.

>> meteorologist adam joseph is here far a closer look at the accuweather forecast and kind of some changes coming our way. >> a good change. it's been a little cloudy chilly this afternoon but we'll grab the sun back and boost temperatures above normal the next couple days as we look at double scan live radar. right now a lot of clouds but very little in the way moisture in that cloud cover. pretty decent day. if you had a jacket on to head outdoors the action cam in south philadelphia at fdr park. there you can see a plane going by with that cloud cover pretty thick overhead. as we take a look at the almanac for today temperatures right at normal for the low temperature of 48 degrees but we struggled this afternoon only hit 60 degrees where our normal should be 68 degrees. we will surpass that tomorrow and there's your sunrise 6:07

and sunset. now 10 or nine minutes before 8 o'clock so that's getting at least later and later every day. 58 in center city right now, the same for cherry hill and south philadelphia. northeast philly a little warmer at 60. cherry hill i should say chestnut hill coming in in upper 50's right now and same for allentown 56. 55 in reading. dover 58. so all numbers are well below the average by at least 10 degrees. the poconos right now only sitting at 48. satellite and radar the culprit is low pressure which right now is in northern new england. this low is moving from nova scotia and heading westward kind of moving in a different direction than a typical storm that comes from the west to the east and is spilling that cloud cover overhead, some showers west of state college and showers in northern new england but right now we are wedged in the dry. a lot of clouds overnight. there will be some stars reappearing late after midnight. a chilly breeze, though, 41 in the suburbs 46 degrees for center city and tomorrow

temperatures in the morning will be around average. again, 46 or so degrees and then we boost it into the upper 60's area wide. 68 for trenton, 69 philadelphia, 67 in dover and the satellite and radar is on its image for future tracker and you can see there's a void of cloud cover so a lot of sunshine for tuesday and we will mimic that as we get into wednesday afternoon. in fact, wednesday with full sunshine and just a few high clouds. weological -- we will all going into the lower 70's. better tomorrow and better than that for the mid part of the week. if you're an allergy sufferer with that sunshine, a warm breeze the next couple days, the oak birch maple pollinating like crazy. high for tuesday, wednesday and with more clouds and a chance of a few showers thursday friday, we'll back off those levels a little bit to the medium to medium high side for the end of the week. the exclusive accuweather 7-day forecast sunny milder tomorrow, 69 and a beautiful wednesday, midweek 74 degrees
