and good wednesday more to you all. we start with law and order on the streets of baltimore overnight. following the worst rioting in the city since the 1960s. >> the curfew off to a rough start last night. using smoke canisters against people refusing to go home. ten people were arrested. they the officers restored calm. hundreds of volunteers picking up brooms and trash bags to help clean up. sweeping up glass and debris at the now infamous cvs. >> this striking photo going viral. a little boy handing out water with an outstretched hand to a white police officer dressed in riot gear. >> as the curfew wept into

effect last night, community leads took it upon themselves to call for calm, despite the massive police presence. locking arms to create a buffer zone to protect officers from some rowdy protesters. we get the latest from elizabeth hur. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, t.j. and reena. so far, authorities say this curfew is working. they say police arrested only ten people last night. compared to more than 200 from monday. >> the police officers. >> reporter: the 10:00 curfew came and went with some refusing to leave. others stood arm in arm trying to keep the peace. >> go home. is that too hard to do? why stay here and get in trouble? >> reporter: from above, you can see law enforcement wearing riot gear on one side. on the other, a few defiant group of demonstrators. about 30 minutes into the curfew, officers being firing

flash bangs and tossing smoke canisters, which some testers threw right back. >> the biggest thing is citizens are safe. the city is stable. we hope to maintain it at the way. >> reporter: the scene, chaotic. but a far cry from 24 hours earlier, when rioters torched cars and businesses. sparking the new city-wide curfew. >> we're all frustrated. we need to find a better way to deal with it. >> reporter: people saying freddie gray the 5-year-old whose death sparked such outrage would not want this to happen to his city. the people like this young boy handing out water to police and this mother grabbing her son to take him off the streets are a true reflection of their heart, their home. well for now, the curfew will remain in effect for a week. and authorities say the national guard will be out patrolling the

streets until it is necessary. reena and t.j. back to you. >> elizabeth, your impressions? a big difference between monday and tuesday after the curfew went into effect? >> reporter: granted, it's still a little early. driving to our location from our hotel, about a five-minute drive, i was telling the producer how it felt like a ghost town. the downtown streets feel like a ghost town. that's a sign that people are heeding the curfew laws. the biggest difference yesterday, we were hearing sirens fire engines just about every hour. so far, i haven't heard a peep. >> elizabeth hur, live for us in baltimore. thank you so much. the tension in baltimore is forcing major league baseball to make history today. >> the orioles will play the white sox at camden yards without a crowd. the stadium closed to fans. it will be the first pro baseball game played behind

[ sobbing ] >> that is a great scene. some relief there. tears of relief in california. the climbing season on mount f rest has been declared over. well saudi arabia says it foiled an attack on the u.s. embassy there. nearly 100 people with ties to isis were arrested. they planned a series of attacks. on the embassy and residential compounds where foreigners live. also in the middle east growing tensions between the u.s. and iran. the pentagon has sent a destroyer and a plane to the strait of hormuz. after the iranian military tried to intercept a ship. no u.s. citizens are believed to be aboard the ship. the supreme court appears deeply divided over the issue of gay marriage.

at stake do same-sex couples have a constitutional right to marry? and must states recognize marriage licenses from other states? bernie sanders plans to challenge hillary clinton for the democratic presidential nomination. sanders, who is registered an independent, is expected to announce tomorrow. well it was a big fight at the white house last night. president obama hosting a state dinner for japan's visiting prime minister. among the familiar faces, seattle seahawks quarterback russell wilson who was there with singer ciara. george takei, i always mess up his name. with his husband. the dessert was tofu cheesecake from the white house beehive. the first lady wore a purple gown by japanese born designer

testimony expect today in the movie theater shooting trial in colorado. nine survivors and police officer took the stand yesterday to describe the horrible night. katie medley who was nine months pregnant recalled how she took her wounded husband's hand not knowing if he would make it. >> i fwrabed caleb's hand. he squeezed my hand. i told him that i loved him. and that i would take care of our baby if he didn't make it. >> their baby born two days later, and caleb did survive. but he's severely injured. little reaction from the man on trial for his life james holmes. accused of killing 12 and injuring dozens. could be another tough day for twitter shares. the stock price battered by a disappointing earnings report. the stock dropped 20% yesterday. the bad news in the report didn't help. the company says it's trying to figure out how that leak happened. and the online video service

airport delays in miami and charlotte. monday's looting, fires and violent crashes sparked by the death of freddie gray in police custody. >> 2,000 national guard troops are on the ground along with 1,000 officers. despite a few brief clashes and fen arrests, it was relatively calm last night. this morning, baltimore schools reopen. a united express flight from raleigh to newark had to make an emergency landing in philadelphia. the engine had caught fire. smoke began filling the cabin with 75 people on board. the passengers were told to be prepared far possible crash landing. >> yeah we let a -- flying like 20,000 feet and all of a sudden the engine stopped. one of the engines stopped. and we saw fire coming out of the engine. uh so immediately, they told us we have to do an emergency landing. we have to brace.

they showed us how to brace position. we all said our prayers. >> the plane landed safely and was immediately surrounded by fire crews who sprayed it with foam. one passenger with a history of heart problems was taken to the hospital. everybody else made it off the plane with no injuries. dozens of american ailes flights thrown into chaos last night thanks to a glitch on the on-flight ipads. they crashed. the outage delayed several flights. a recent software update may be to blame. who knew they used ipads? >> everybody is these days right? houston has an ipad story of sorts. hunt is on for a couple of suspects that police say are responsible for robberies. man ripping an ipad out of the hands of a 2-year-old boy. and he takes off. the toddler was actually knocked over during this. he suffered cuts and bruises.

he'll be okay. police believe two men were involved. the same pair linked to at least six other recent cases. turn to this scene. a car is stopped in a breakdown lane and an suv crashes into it. emergency operators had been alerted about an erratic driver. they were able to spot the suv moments before the crash. they warned the tow truck driver who pushed the family back in their car just before impact. >> well mixed martial arts champion jon jones has been stripped of his title and suspended indefinitely. he turned himself in to police after a hit-and-run crash in new mexico that left a pregnant woman with a broken arm. he's facing possible prison time. -- because of misbehavior. the nfl has given up its long-held tax exempt status. the nfl had been tax exempt
