all because of his golden glove and camera skills. good monday morning. i'm ryan smith. >> and i'm kayna whitworth. reena and t.j. are both on assignment. we start with breaking news out of texas. a deadly shootout at a gathering to judge cartoons of the prophet muhammad. >> the car driven by two suspects remains at the venue where that gathering was being held. those suspects opened fire on a security guard wounding him. they were killed when police returned fire. now inside the crowd was ordered to a safe room. >> we are going to move y'all into the auditorium here in just a minute. i just need everybody to remain calm and remain orderly and take you into the auditorium further away from the front of the -- >> were they muslim? >> i have no idea. >> reporter: the people sang

patriotic songs while they waited for more information. here's susan saulny with the details. >> reporter: men and women scattered afraid for their lives after gunfire broke out sunday evening at a controversial dallas area event. police their guns drawn, swarmed the chaotic scene. >> we heard boom boom boom then all of a sudden we see the cops everywhere. >> reporter: the american freedom defense initiative was holding a contest for cartoons featuring the prophet muhammad. as it was scheduled to end two men in a car arrived and started shooting. >> they drove up got out and opened fire on the security officer. >> reporter: after the security guard was hit garland police opened fire killing both gunmen who have yet to be identified. the fbi is assisting the investigation and is working vigorously to determine if this is some form of islamic radicalism or something else completely. >> the bodies are outside the car? >> yes. >> on the ground. >> yes, simply because we're not

"good morning america." and now baltimore is trying to get back to normal following a week of unrest in reaction to the death of freddie gray. the streets were calm after a citywide curfew lifted and the national guard began to withdraw with six police officers now facing criminal charges, the violent clashes gave way to prayer and peace. but the community is still demanding justice and authorities saying that gray was put head first in a police van, shackled and then left to slam against the walls. >> two more republicans are about to enter the presidential race. dr. ben carson will announce his candidate say in an event in detroit later today. the retired neurosurgeon has never held public office but believes his lack of ties to establishment politics as well as his personal rise from poverty will resonate with conservative voters. carly fiorina is also expected to kick off her candidacy with an online announcement today. she's the former head of hp and

lost a california senate race five years ago and pitching herself as the anti-hillary and has a new book out tomorrow detailing her views. stay tuned for "good morning america." an exclusive interview will happen with her later. to nepal's earthquake zone the u.s. military is adding its support to the relief efforts. helicopters and four osprey aircraft which can land like choppers are now ferrying aid to remote areas that have seen little assistance so far. now, that's really important because the main airport in kathmandu is closed because of runway damage. also that man right there, reportedly 101 years old was pulled from the debris. a week after the earthquake. he was rescued in a ville blaj close to where the quake was centered. the del norte toll is now over 7200. >> a few jolts for millions here at home. several small earthquakes rattling nerves over the weekend. a 3.8 magnitude quake struck the los angeles area yesterday morning. just a few hours a slightly weaker quake hit near san

francisco. no reports of injuries or damage, but a lot of people were pretty shaken up. >> i felt the quick shake on my bed and it was terrible. i woke up i was sleeping and i just screamed. and i woke everyone in the room. >> small quakes hit irving texas, mississippi and southwestern michigan. it will be a warm but stormy day in the upper midwest and really all week long. a line of strong thunderstorms moved into minnesota and wisconsin yesterday afternoon bringing heavy rain gusty winds and sigh that large hail. the extreme weather there is expected to continue for a little while today even as the mercury soars to summerlike temperatures and those storms will move out of minnesota today into the midwest from kansas city across to chicago. there's also a good chance of severe weather in western texas and possibly in the rockies, as well. some showers on the west coast and appalachians but beautiful warmer than usual days in the northeast. >> all right.

well britain's new royal princess is now 3 days old and she's just now settling in. sunday she welcomed visitors and, of course that had to include grandma middleton and aunt pippa, the first to arrive. in then grandpa wales also known as prince charles and his wife camilla likely know what to call the new princess but the rest of us are still waiting for the official announcement of her name likely to come after the queen meets her for the first time. >> lots of predictions going on. >> even some betting going on. >> i know. a lot of betting. still ahead getting a 'tis louisiana for much cheaper. >> plus a mile high joyride. a man under arrest accused of taking a plane and taking it for a flight. >> caught on camera. a motorcyclist gets trapped under a truck. how did he end up there and the good samaritans racing to his rescue.

superspeedway. a pileup of a dozen cars stopped the race for 11 minutes. now, no one injured but in another race friday night, driver brad smith broke both of his ankles. >> and the track was dry at talladega but that won't be the case for most roads in the midwest. also east of the great lakes and in interior california. >> if you're flying today, airport delays likely in kansas city and chicago. as well. and recapping our breaking news this morning, the fbi working to identify two suspects shot and killed outside of a controversial conference near dallas. >> the car those suspects drove being checked now for possible bombs. the shoot-out started when the gunmen opened fire on a security guard standing watch at a meeting to judge cartoons depicting the prophet muhammad. that guard was slightly wounded. he's already out of the hospital. after the incident those inside were ushered into a safe room but just before the attack two social media accounts that expressed radical islamic

viewpoints posted messages with #texasattack. we'll continue to follow this throughout the morning. in san francisco, a fire on a crowded tour bus, the whole thing caught on camera smoke and flames pouring out of a back of of this. the driver had no idea. two people had to chase it down let the driver know. the passengers were quickly evacuated. nobody was hurt. firefighters arrived a few minutes later but the bus was destroyed. a man is facing charges for taking a joyride in a stolen airplane. he took the plane for a ride late on saturday night, now it's not known how long he was aloft, but an unauthorized flight above a highly populated area well that's raising eyebrows. air traffic controller talked the man down. >> i kind of screwed up your night, didn't i. >> i just want you to get down on the ground safely. we'll grab some coffee go to my house, whatever. we'll have a -- we'll just talk, okay? just come on down.

>> he did. there's no injuries or damage. so far the 27-year-old pilot has just been charged with grand theft auto because i guess how often do cops need a law for grand theft airplane. i guess they do now? >> seriously, he needs his own little column there. all right, so these two sisters are stranded in michigan wilderness for two weeks. and now they're sharing their survival story. lee writing and leslie roy lost their way during a sightseeing trip and ended up trapped in the snow on an isolated road. they had no cell service, no heat they were forced to live off girl scout cookies and cheese puffs they had in the car and melted know for water. in the middle of the night there were some unwelcome visitors, as well. >> the bears would show up about midnight. they would wake us up. all's we could hear was them scratching at the truck. >> so the women were rescued when a police helicopter finally spotted their suv 14 days in. they attribute their survival to

love, hope and what they called common sense. and an incredible rescue effort captured on camera in southern california. so that's a biker that was knocked to the pavement and then dragged stuck under a pickup truck. good samaritans jumped it their cars to help. they kept the man calm. they lifted the truck with a jack fortunately one. the passing drivers happened to be an off-duty firefighter and knew how to get him out. >> thank goodness. for sports starting with the nhl. tampa bay and chicago. anaheim, they're the winners in their playoff series yesterday. >> as for the nba, i mean playoffs are in full swing. postseason highlights from our guys at espn. >> john anderson with a quick look at the start of round two of the nba playoffs. it's getting more and more serious. big sunday for the warriors big monday coming. game one, western conference semis against the grizzlies. steph curry who reportedly will be announced as the nba mvp on
