>> ♪♪ >> "action news." delaware valley's leading news program. with matt o'donnell, tamala edwards, karen rogers and meteorologist, david murphy. >> ♪♪ >> hey everyone, it's 6 o'clock on this tuesday may fifth. here it's what's happening. >> accuweather is tracking another day of above normal temperatures along with the chance of a thunderstorm. >> first responders make a daring rooftop rescue of a wayward toddler. >> a student faces charges for trying to poison her roommates. how police caught onto the plot before it was too late. >> we have your weather and traffic updates with david and karen. good morning. >> well, a delightful morning outside right now. not much of a breeze. we've got temperatures in the 60's in most neighborhoods and some high cirrus cloud cover but that's going to give way to plenty of sunshine early. satellite shows you how there are thicker clouds out to the

west that will roll in as day goes on. eventually some of those fading showers will pop up, same stuff you see out by pittsburgh we'll probably see a bit that of later this afternoon. temperatures right now are pretty comfortable though. 62 in philadelphia, 62 in wilmington, 61 in millville even 60's down the shore and the mid-50's up in allentown and back toward reading. as we roll through the day 81 degrees by noon, we're really going see those numbers take off again and then by three, 84 and a high today of 85 around 4 o'clock. later this afternoon and this evening there is the chance of a spotty pop-up shower or maybe even a thunderstorm in a couple of locations. as we take a look at the pollen count today, we have eased back to the medium high range but that's still high enough for those of you suffering from allergies to take your meds. and it's an ozone action day kind of anyway. it's moderate ozone action level today and that means that there's some particle pollution, some pollution air pollution in the air and those of in you sensitive groups like people with asthma should probably limit your outdoor exertion during the height of the afternoon heating. when i step inside we'll take

acolouser look at that chance of showers later this afternoon. karen what about the roads? >> well, you can see they're clear and dry but not without issues. we've had a few problems even at this early hour. starting off in center city right at the base of the ben franklin bridge. westbound on the local vine we had an accident here blocking the two left lanes. it just cleared a second ago so we could see traffic now moving better at this point on the vine but we have a new accident on 422. it's on the shoulder. it's a eastbound on 422 right past arm and hammer boulevard so watch for some slowing past the scene there. looking good in malvern in chester county. this is 202 quiet out there. not too many people up just yet. no delays if you're coming in from west chester or exton. looking pretty good there. but in willow grove we have an issue here. an accident has been causing a problem. the accident happened yesterday afternoon but the trouble is it brought down poles and wires and we have verizon and peco on the scene. easton road remains closed between the turnpike and fitzwatertown road. use york road to get around that closure this morning, matt and tam. >> you got it. thanks karen.

a young child crawled out onto the roof of a row home in a philadelphia neighborhood while a witness recorded the frightening ordeal. "action news" reporter katherine scott is live along the 4700 block of leaper street in frankford with word of charges and the video. katherine. >> reporter: matt, i'm being told no charges have been filed yet. sources told "action news" that charges are expected in this case. no one was injured in all of this but that child was taken to the hospital to be checked out. very frightening moments for people in this neighborhood. let's go to that cell phone video that somebody captured yesterday as all this was unfolding here in frankford. you can see a two-year-old boy in his diaper on a roof from the three story home. this happened on the 4700 block of leaper street. the boy climbed through an opened third floor window, could be seen walking around the sloped roof. neighbors were yelling for him to stay put. when firefighters arrived they placed a ladder out to get the boy. >> the baby was reaching out for the ladder. that was the scariest part

about it, him reaching out to it and everybody thinking he's going to fall. right. >> so, that was the scariest part about it. >> reporter: now the little boy was finally safe when a firefighter reached through an open window and pulled him inside. police say the boy and another toddler were left alone while their mothers were next door. both women were handcuffed and taken away for questioning. we're live in frankford katherine scott, channel6 "action news." >> thanks, katherine. a fast moving blaze kept first responders busy in the hunting park section of philadelphia yesterday. a firefighter suffered burns while rescuing a resident in the 3800 block of north ninth street. an "action news" viewer shot this video of the flames and the smoke shooting out of the house. officials believe the fire started in the kitchen. >> a university of south carolina student is now facing some serious charges. police say she tried to poison her roommates. erin o'hearn is live at the big board with the full story. good morning erin. >> reporter: good morning

tam. moving out wasn't an option and police say 22-year-old haley king didn't get along with her two roommates. in fact those roommates set up secret cameras in their shared apartment because they were so afraid of what king might do following a few altercations the three had. now officials say this video shows king opening the refrigerator picking up several containers one by one and spitting into them. she also poured glass cleaner into one of the containers as you can see there. one of the roommates said she did consume food she believes was tainted with windex and king's spit. the 22-year-old allegedly confessed to the incident when she was confronted by police. now apparently the two roommates who set up the cameras did try to get can ink to move out but she refused. now king is charged with unlawful malicious tampering with a human drug product or food. this is a class c felony and could get her up to 20 years in prison. she has been released after she posted bail day after her arrest. certainly an odd story matt.

>> indeed. thanks erin. atlantic city is reportedly considering living laying off 85 firefighter, the press of atlantic city says the city. 40 of the layoffs would come from the recreation department. atlantic city has seen its tax base shrink significantly in the last few years because of casino closures and declining property values. >> it is 6:06. so who exactly buys those luxury electric cars like tesla? we have some insight into who is behind those high priced wheels. maribel aber has more in times square good morning. >> reporter: good morning, tam. what nice cars they are. electric car buyers tend to be actually younger and richer than buyers of the conventional model of the same car. research from true car.com compared the profile of buyers of two compact models. in the case of the ford focus buyers of the regular gas model were on average of 46 years old with an average income of $76,000 a year. electric had buyers three years younger with 199,000 in

yesterday but really not all that bad. future tracker six shows you how the clouds are going to filter in as we get into the afternoon. by 2 o'clock there's a possibility that here or there there's a little light sprinkle or shower around. looks like the better chance of that activity popping up is after 3 o'clock and this is the 5 o'clock afternoon view and you see every now and then just a little bit of a brief shower popping through, maybe a rumble of thunder. i think there's actually a better chance of a thunderstorm popping up later in the evening hours and by 11:00 we may have even more of that scattered off and on precipitation. most of this probably take the overnight hours to die down. as we take a look at allentown's call today, not a bad day. very similar to yesterday with a sun and clouds mix a high of 82. the one difference is that there is that chance of a spotty shower or maybe a thunderstorm briefly popping through. and then down the shore 76 degrees pleasant, a little cooler next to the cool ocean water. and again a spotty shower or a thunderstorm possible late in the day and evening. and in philadelphia a high of 85. the same as yesterday. the difference is that there will be more cloud cover

around at times today and there is that spotty shower or storm chance. most of the day dry as you just saw and winds out of the southwest at just six to 12 miles per hour so not as breezy as it was for the majority of yesterday afternoon. 65 by 8 o'clock, 79 by 11 o'clock. we're really shooting up in a hurry again today and then we'll spend the afternoon in the low to mid 80's with a high of 85 probably around 4 o'clock. and there again is that spotty precipitation. now tomorrow the frontal boundary bringing the clouds and the spotty precip today shifts to the south and that allows cooler air to come in and we'll only be in the 70's tomorrow before we bounce back up to about 80 on thursday. your exclusive accuweather 7-day, 85 today, a mix of sun and clouds, spotty precipitation here or there. tomorrow it's going to feel like spring again with a high of just 74 degrees. but then we will have that chance of a spotty shower here or there. and then thursday the front's back to our north sunshine breaks out, 80 is the high and for the dad vail regatta this year, 83 on friday, 85 on saturday.

right there or this is the boulevard past broad street. southbound traffic headed towards fox. just a little building volume. not looking too bad as you're heading out on the boulevardly we have an issue on 422 eastbound past arm and ham are boulevard. an accident off to the shoulder but it's in the construction zone so kind of a tricky spot to have an accident. watch for a little bit of slowing past the scene. in towamencin township a house fire here with some restrictions on saw mill way near troxel road. stick to why cole road. easton road remains closed between the turnpike and fitzwatertown. this is an accident from yesterday afternoon but the trouble is it brought down wires, brought down poles. we've got crews on the scene. just use york road as your alternate an accident we had over here on wrangle hill road has cleared. things are reopened near pulaski highway with no problems. they had a downed pole. they were able to fix that nice and early. we've been tweeting with the

#6abc traffic. the weather 62 degrees in, 56 in allentown, 51 in millville. a nice warm day with a high of 85. unlike yesterday we have a spotty chance for a shower or thunderstorm later on tam. >> thank you karen. >> new this morning an armed robber's get away proved to be more difficult than expected. a convenience store owner locked the bandit inside and you see what happens there. surveillance video shows the robber desperately trying to yank open the doors with no luck. finally the owner let's the man out. he got away with less than a hundred bucks. police are still looking for him. boston marathon bomber dzhokhar tsarnaev cried yesterday in court as his aunt broke down on the witness stand. he wiped tear asway from his eyes as his under a sobbed uncontrol police department the same jury that convicted him of the 2013 bombing has to decide whether to sentence him to life in prison or death. >> the search for the robbers who ransacked an apartment

kilauea volcano exploded on sunday. these are the spectacular images of how it happened a.m. crater wall partially collapsed and the rocks slid into the lava splashing fist sized chunks of liquid rock over the edge. geologists measured a small earthquake nearby yesterday. this is the first time the volcano has a full lake of lava inside the crater since 1974. >> wow. >> like a super-duper heated hot tub. >> yeah. >> don't get in. >> that you don't want to get into. >> all right, let's take a look right now at the traffic. this is the ben franklin bridge. we're looking live here looking pretty good, no delays just yet. the ongoing construction blocks the right lane but you can see traffic moving fine right now. in moorestown burlington county centerton road northbound is going to close between hartford and creek road today and tomorrow. they're doing some milling and paving so stick to borton landing road as your alternate. and in pemberton burlington county we have been talking

about the ongoing brush fire, 70 westbound past 5:30 expect fire activity on the shoulder there, dave. >> most neighborhoods this morning are in the low 60's karen and it's very pleasant, a little milder than it's been recently and by 9 o'clock we're all the way up to 70 and 81 by noon. this is probably going to be the best part of the day. during the afternoon there is the chance of a spotty pop-up shower or even a thunderstorm here or there. it's going to be dry most of the time. it will be a little bit warmer later with a high of 85 degrees and a few more clouds digging in as the afternoon goes on. that 85 will strike probably at about 4 o'clock today. a lot of instability around the region, around the country i should say. northern texas has some issues right now as well as a line of showers to chicago. some rain down in florida and a little bit more going on in arizona. chance of severe weather today and most of texas and beau back through the eastern half of new mexico, strong gusty winds and maybe an isolated tornado over there. so if you're flying to dallas that's something to keep in mind. on the big board no major delays but we have a thunderstorm that's been in
