weekend of mother's day mayhem from mother nature. severe storms. barrelling down on the central u.s. bringing a dangerous mix of tornadoes, flooding blizzard conditions. at least a dozen tornadoes reported sunday. including this one in lake city, iowa. >> there goes the school! there goes the school. >> reporter: watch as the roof of this school is lifted completely off and disintegrates. its debris swirling in the air. >> that's the [ bleep ] school. there goes the roof off the school. >> reporter: a frightening ordeal for the people inside the school at the time for an awards banquet. powerful winds sending these lawn chairs flying. >> holy [ bleep ]. >> reporter: and rising flood waters causing major damage. like this sinkhole that used to be parking lot. and leading to rescues. in some cases, the flooding so veer rescue by land not an option. the national guard forced to air lift many to safety.

including this pregnant woman and her best friend's bayby. >> they couldn't get to us by boat. >> reporter: they made it to safety just in time. in east texas, a flood watch up today. the veer threat has moved off to the east to the gulf coast. across the mississippi river. as far nofrt as the great lakes. this smaszive storm. that does stretch far to the north. clayton sandell reports from south dakota. >> reporter: south dakota slammed with a one-two punch from mother nature. this tornado taking aim at delmont mid morning sunday. it damaged 30 homes. taking out the town's brand-new fire station. along with a centuries old church where sunday school kids ran for cover. >> we huddled in the basement and the bathroom. we knew it wasn't good. >> reporter: nine people were injured. the storm knocking out power and running water. but mother nature wasn't done.

walloping the western part of the state with blizzard-like conditions and nearly two feet of snow. turning highways dangerously slick. >> i have fefr seen snow in may. >> reporter: those whiteout conditions extending to colorado coover over the weekend. snow as much as two to three inches an hour. bringing down trees and power outages. this tornado had peak winds of 130 miles an hour. you can see the damage that causes. now right now, there is no running water. no electricity here. so even for the people who have homes to come back to everyone must stay out until the repairs are made and that can take several days. robin? >> thank you, clayton. we have other sad news. a routine traffic stop in mississippi turned deadly. two lifrs were gunned down over the weekend. this morning, four suspects are in custody, expected to appear in court. a memorial this afternoon for the falling officers.

mara schiavocampo is here with the latest. >> reporter: robin, good morning. officials haven't said why those men suddenly opened fire marking the first time officers were killed in that area in three decades. this morning, a city grieving. after two mississippi officers one once named officer of the year the other, just a rookie are killed in what was supposed to be a routine traffic stop. >> it was like six loud gunshots. >> reporter: four suspects now behind bars. two of them 29-year-old marvin banks and 22-year-old joanie calloway charged with capital murder. it started saturday night when 34-year-old hattiesburg officer benjamin deen pulled over a gold cadillac escalade. he calls fellow officer for backup. shots are fired. banks fleeing the scene. allegedly stealing one of the

officer's patrol cars. >> let he out. >> curtis, did you do it? >> no sir, i didn't do it. >> reporter: all four suspects taken into custody on sunday. officer d erk en leaves behind two children and his wife his high school sweetheart. officer tate graduated from the police academy just a year ago. the race for the white house now revving up with the top gop kptds out in force in south carolina talking of national security as a brand-new poll in the key state of new hampshire offers up new evidence this is a wide-open race. this new poll shows the field about as bunched as it could be. >> you have six declared candidates. another half dozen will get in over the next month. there is nothing close to a front-runner. look at the ploom berg poll in new hampshire, where the candidates are spending most of their time. essentially, a four-way tie for first lace. those candidates not far above

35-year-old angelika graswald remains behind bars accused of killing her 46-year-old fiance on a kayak trip. >> i thing they've rushed to judgment and maybe jumped the gun. >> reporter: her attorney demanding bail hearing. new york police arresting graswald 12 days ago, accusing her of murdering her fiance vincent viafore. they were kayaking on april 19th when she says strong wind and choppy waters flipped their boats. sending viafore into the river. >> he just flipped. >> reporter: investigators shea there are up consistent sis in graswald's story. won't say what evidence they had to arrest her. in the days after the accident, she changed her facebook photo to this pose. posting this pic of herself kayaking with the kapgs, if only i could have paddled harder. uploading this seemingly light

too soon. >> always outgoing. superloving. wanted to help everyone. >> reporter: the 17-year-old struck and killed bay freight train saturday on this train trestle north of seattle. >> i hear a train whistle. i look up. ky see them running from the middle of the bridge. and i can see a train coming around the corner at them. >> reporter: it's crew stopping to perform cpr. it was too late. the high school senior's death, just the latest deadly encounter on the tracks. >> i just hit kids on a bridge. train energy on the bridge, over. >> reporter: in november 21-year-old victoria bridges was hospitalized after a run-in with a train in lynchburg, virginia. her friend,than, killed instantly after being hit. this vid voe showing the crew of the film midnight rider racing to get away from an approaching freight train.
