ide, two lanes other northbound side. matt pelman will have an update on the commute in a few minutes. >> we're also following developing news in south philadelphia. that's where a body was discovered on board a ship sparking a hazmat scare. monday afternoon i'm shirleen allicott. >> and i'm brian taff. a death investigation is under way after a stowaway's body was found on board a cargo ship. crews were called to the port around 1 o'clock today along the 2400 block of south columbus boulevard. that's where "action news"'s walter perez is live this afternoon with the latest. walter. >> reporter: hey guys, we will customs agents and fire officials are still working the scene a bit down the way here at pier 84 the body we're told has not been removed and it was a discovery that dockworkers say they will never forget. the situation started one unfolding a bit past noon today when kareem dye and some of his fellow dockworkers smelled a strong odor as they

started unloading a shipment of cocoa beens. >> we found snacks and stuff. >> reporter: dye says he was not prepared for what happened next. >> i looked to my left and i hear one of my coworkers say it's a dead body. >> reporter: authorities have since confirmed that the body of a man was indeed found inside that cargo ship. witnesses tell "action news" that he was found naked and severely bloated. judging from the supplies found nearby investigators say the indications are that the victim was a stowaway who likely found his way on board before the ship left the nation of ivory coast on his way to philadelphia. but the cause of death remains a mystery. authorities say his death could have resulted from anything including exposure to chemicals used to preserve the beans, to high heat or a lack of oxygen. he may have even drowned when the beans were irrigated. as for kareem dye he says it's something he hopes to never see again.

>> if i wanted to i could have jumped down into the hole and i would have been right next to him. it was really disturbing, man. >> reporter: no word right now on the victim's identity and the pending autopsy is expected to reveal the cause of death. reporting live from pier 84, walter perez, channel6 "action news": brian. >> walter, thank you. a deadly early morning fire caused chaos and panic in philadelphia's kensington section today. and now fire investigators say it was set on purpose. homicide detectives have now joined that investigation and "action news" reporter sarah bloomquist joins us live at police headquarters. sarah you've got the latest on this. >> reporter: brian, that's right. this investigation was handed over to the arson task force which includes members of the philadelphia police homicide unit atf agents and the fire marshal. they're doing interviews here right now. this happened after the fire marshal determined that not only was this deadly fire an arson but that it was set using an incendiary device. the blaze killed one and sent five others to the hospital

including a three-year-old girl. the blaze broke out around 6:15 on the three story apartment on kensington avenue. residents describe pure panic as there were no lights and no smoke alarms and the building was filling with thick black smoke. three people jump fred upper floors, three others rescued by firefighters. one man who jumped died from his injuries. we've learned that a canine unit hit on a flammable material on the first floor. the fire marshal has since determined that this blaze was started by an endy incendiary device. a three-year-old survived the blaze. witnesses say she was lowered out of an upper floor window. her name is marin lynn rosado. her mother was badly injured we talked to the child's father and other residents who describe that panic in the building this morning. >> when they got it out, you know, if you go upstairs, the whole third floor roof fell

out. if they didn't get out by that time, all the whole thing was going to fill up on them. >> there was no lights. i opened my door. black smoke started coming in. i went out my side window on the roof. >> reporter: "action news" has learned 18 people were displaced by the fire. the building's owner is talking to police. well we know that license and inspection is part of this investigation trying to determine if this store front apartment building was properly licensed. again, the investigation continues into this deadly fire. from here at police headquarters, at this point no charges have been filed. live at police headquarters, i'm sara bloomquist channel6 "action news." >> thank you sarah. almost two dozen people are out of their homes after another apartment fire, this one in mercer county. cell phone video shows the flames that tore through the windsor castle apartments in east windsor township this morning. it started around 2:30 this morning. at least two people were hurt

including one who had to jump out of a window toes cape the fire. firefighter also suffered an ankle injury. the red cross is helping 20 people who are out of their homes this afternoon. it is time now for a check of your accuweather forecast. >> yeah, as we know the work week feeling a bit like summer as we kick it off but spring will return in the next couple days. let's go outside. meteorologist adam joseph live along city avenue. >> reporter: it is warm, it is humid and with a light breeze it helps just a little bit an lot of cloud cover right now here on city avenue helping to mask some of that intense sunshine. as we look at the number in philadelphia, we're sitting at 80 degrees but there are some 70's on the board near wilmington and southern chester county where downpours and thunderstorms passed a couple of hours ago. and with that influence of the ocean, 60's at the shore, 75 in millville and the warmest spot the lehigh valley, 86 degrees. but no matter where you are it feels very summer-like with the dewpoints now back between that 65 and 70-degree mark, it is very humid out, 65 in

philadelphia and on the verge of oppressive in dover nor with a dewpoint of 70. that dewpoint is the measure of how much moisture is in the air. as we look at double scan live radar we've got the remnants of ana heading to our south and out to sea and we have a cold front in the ohio valley. you can see a lot of showers and thunderstorms but that's working to the north and west so we're going get split between the two and very little in the way of moisture heading our way. so a scattered thunderstorm possible tomorrow, 80's going to the 60's and a fire threat unfortunately with the winds change on wednesday. all the details in accuweather. >> adam thank you. after a weekend of violent deadly weather in texas the arkansas and ohio, with more than 70 tornadoes reported over the weekend today emergency crews are still searching through the splintered wreckage, searching for survivors. >> inside. >> today scenes of utter destruction in van texas after a reported tornado touched down overnight. around a third of the homes

and businesses there in ruins. >> i didn't think it was going to be this bad. >> two people died and several more are still missing with rescuers fearing people may still be trapped under piles of debris. >> at this time we do have multiple fire department law enforcement agencies wildlife game ward dense with search canines going door to door in the neighborhoods affected to see if they can identify any of the missing people that we have names for. >> the winds so fierce trees were blowing sideways. vehicles smashed as they came tumbling down like tooth picks. and north of dallas dramatic rescues as the national guard pulled people to safety trapped by flash flooding including this pregnant woman holding her friend's baby. >> this time they couldn't even get to us by boat, so it's really scary. >> families relieved and thankful after a harrowing ordeal. >> we appreciate these guys and the national guard. >> south dakota a tornado

damaged 30 homes in delmond including the town's fire station and a century's old church. in iowa people snapping pictures of this ominous funnel cloud as they fled to safety and watch as this one in lake city lifts the roof of a school. >> there goes the school there goes school. >> unbelievable and it is the red cross and other emergency services setting up shelters across the midwest and the plains states as those rescue efforts feverishly continue in the search for those survivors in van texas. brian. >> unbelievable stuff. alicia thank you. george zimmerman is out of the hospital this afternoon after he was involved in a shooting in florida today. details are very preliminary but police say a shot was fired into the passenger window of zimmerman's car. the bullet hit zimmerman but his face was hit by glass fragments. at this point it's not clear what led up to that shooting or who fired the gun. police say zimmerman did not return fire. zimmerman has had a string of legal run ins since he was

acquitted in the 2013 shooting death of trayvon martin. time for the traffic report. >> let's check in with you matt pelman for an update. >> certainly not the way we like to start the new work week. it will be a rough ride home on this monday afternoon brian and shirleen due in large part to this crash on the northeast extension that we showed you the pictures of at the top of the hour. it happened in the southbound southbound lanes a few miles south of lansdale interchange involving the car under the truck, just the right lane is squeezing by. we've got three lanes there so two lanes blocked, one squeezing by and of course you're seeing slowing as you can come down from lansdale and head toward plymouth meeting but you might know more volume in the afternoon is heading northbound on 476 the northeast extension. looking at speeds in the 20's and teens the whole way up through that scene approaching lansdale. then in that backlog there was another crash on the northbound side of the northeast extension north of mid-county. so, needless to say you don't want to get stuck in this

>> suspect in the murder of two mississippi police officers are appearing in court for the very first time today. the city of hattiesburg held a public memorial service today to honor officers benjamin dean and corey tate. they were shot during a traffic stop saturday night. dean was recently named officer of the year while tate was a rookie fulfilling a life long dream. >> he always wanted to be a police officer since he was young playing with police cars and hats and xbox games and just having that protective spirit that has always been one of his dreams. >> now marvin banks and joni calaway are charged in the observes' murder. two alleged accomplices are also facing lesser charges. an investigation in under way in western pennsylvania

after a deadly shooting at an auto parts store. it happened south of pittsburgh. an employee was killed this morning and police are still searching for the gunman. that employee was working behind the counter. police are not sure if the motive was robbery or if it was personal. >> lawyers for accused cop killer eric frein have withdrawn their request to have his trial moved. frein is accused of ambushing pennsylvania state police outside of pike county barracks. the attack killed corporal bryon dixon and injured trooper alex duck has. frein's attorney wanted the trial moved out of pike county because the d.a. referred to frein as a murder intera campaign mailer even though they've now withdrawn in request ththey say they do plan to raise the issue again later as part of a larger push to get that trial moved. meanwhile police in the poconos are searching for 12-year-old mason pechulski last seen behind his house in jim thorpe carbon county. he failed to come home after

he went outside to feed the fish in his backyard between 7:10 and 7:30 this morning. investigators aren't sure what led to his disappearance. they're urging anyone with any information to please come forward. >> more than one third of all people living in atlantic county are now on some kind of government assistance. the county spokeswoman says the number of families on food stamps has gone up 12 percent. that's after the latest wave of casino closings in atlantic city. the county's hiring 10 new caseworkers to meet the needs. overall atlantic county residents collected almost $60.5 million in food stamps last year. they've already collected 21 million in the first four months of this year. >> to business now. let's get to a look at the closing numbers on wall street. down day across-the-board with the dow jones dropping 86 points the nasdaq losing close to 10 and the s & p 500 down 10 points on the day. we have a consumer alert about

a new scam i don't involving your credit card. it starts with a phone call. someone calls pretending to be your credit card company and says they've detector fraud onononononon ynt. they then ask for that three digit security code as proof that you have the card in your possession. but the scammers turn around and sell that information online. investigators are reminding people never to give out any account information to anyone who calls you. memorial day travel is expected to hit its highest level in a decade. aaa says this year 37.2 million americans will travel 50 miles or more. that's because of the pham fact that gas costs about a dollar a gallon less than it did this last year. analysts say lower unemployment has more americans willing to spend for the holiday weekend which is coming up in just a few weeks brian. >> coming up quickly al leash shaft thank you. more than 200 high school seniors are get something financial help to attend

a thunderstorm drifter into this area to the west but unfortunately we couldn't spread that love across much of the area. this will be name of the game, maybe a scattered thunderstorm or downpour in one or two spots. as we look at the numbers it's really cool along the shore temperatures only in the 60's with the winds out of the southeast. 82 in philadelphia, 87 in allentown and wilmington at 76 degrees. satellite and radar will show this spin near norfolk virginia, as that low continues to push just to our south, this is the remnants of ana. unfortunately just missing our region with some much needed rainfall. in addition to that we have a can cold front to the west bringing severe weather in parts of the ohio valley with severe thunderstorm watches and tornado watches. this energy will be lifting to the north and west tomorrow. so, we're kind of in between the cold front and the remnants of ana and that means another dry day around here for the most part. so, for tonight a spotty early

thundershower. it's wise it's warm and muggy, 63 allentown, 66 philadelphia, dover coming in at 64 degrees and future tracker tomorrow morning warm to start. 73 philadelphia, 69 in the lehigh valley. it is dry and in the afternoon you see not much in the way of activity with downpours and thunderstorms but another warm day. 87 in philadelphia, 83 in allentown and then a cooler start to your wednesday with the winds shifting out of the northwest. only 50's for philadelphia and the surrounding suburbs. as we look at your four day at 4:00 tomorrow's a transition day its a warm day at 88 degrees with sun and clouds maybe a spotty downpour in couple locations but the humidity will drop big time tomorrow afternoon as the front passes through. then on wednesday it is windy cooler a high temperature of just 69 degrees but that very low humid air and the those winds on wednesday brings up the fire threat again and a picture perfect thursday, 72 degrees and some clouds on friday, 76 with low humidity.

about 4 o'clock just little less than a half hour ago in the 300 block of state road. now, we are initially told that those two vehicles collided head on. you can see the damage that resulted and it would appear the jaws of life were used to get the roof off one of those cars. at left one person was taken to aria torresdale for injuries that were described as serious. this obviously having traffic implications. again the 300 block of state road in bensalem this afternoon. we'll keep you posted as we learn more about this breaking news. >> police in south philadelphia are looking for the man who was caught on surveillance camera stealing a surveillance camera. it happened last month at 20th and porter. video shows the man walking up to the building with a ladder, then climbing up and taking the camera down. one angle even shows him from the camera he was in the process of stealing. he took it down and ran off. police are asking anyone with information to call them. tonight on 6abc a mysterious death in the woods

toddler's life. >> a woman is facing charges for selling tickets to sheryl crow concert. the event was supposed to feature a photo opportunity autographed signings and a chance to meet the superstar singer. the problem it never existed and thousand the promoter accused of making the whole thing up is facing the music. "action news" reporter chad pradelli is live in mount holly where kelly brine just made her first court appearance. chad. >> reporter: brine was arraigned around 3 o'clock. she's charged with theft by deception and deceptive business practices accused of selling thousands of dollars worth of tickets to a fake sheryl crow concert. sheryl crow on stage here at the flying w airport in medfordd made up event had cindy spots excited. >> i'm disappointed. we should have learn. >> reporter: potts learned this morning that police say the whole sheryl crow concert was a con. orchestrate bide kelly before i yan of burlington. investigators say bryan sold

roughly 300 tickets at 60 bucks a pop and had fliers for sponsorships but no vendor. >> they have bands and they have a bar out there. never anything to this extent. >> reporter: medford and lumberton police say after hearing about the concert they began planning public safety measures. it didn't take long for detectives to realize the concert was a sham. >> lumberton police department reached out for sheryl crow's representatives and determined that she was not coming. >> i think she just got in too far over her head. >> reporter: police say it doesn't appear flying w was involved and the airport tells "action news" in a statement it was only solicited to host the event by bryan. pots says she was refund you had but why bryan thought she could orchestrate the alleged scam is unclear. >> i guess somebody must have tipped her off or she must have got scared but i was going to be out of like 300

bucks. >> reporter: right. >> 260 som dollars. >> reporter: and police say they don't have an exact figure on the amount allegedly stolen but they say it's upwards of $30,000. they also say this investigation is ongoing to see if anyone else was involved. i'm live in mount holly, chad pradelli, channel6 "action news." >> all right, chad, thank you. a central pennsylvania man who murdered a montgomery county stranger he met through a craigslist ad will spend at least four decades behind bars. 28-year-old chad wilcox was sentenced to 40 to 80 years in prison today. prosecutors say wilcox planned to rob manual hockey man back in september. instead he stabbed the norristown man to death. wilcox was later captured in kentucky. >> philadelphia police need your help finding two men who used head lamps and a baby stroller to steal thousands of dollars in tools. this is surveillance video from the 400 block of hacker street in east oak lane. back on april 27th police say

the suspects tried to get into cars for several minutes then turned their attention to that work truck. after loading the stroller up with some $5,000 worth of nail guns, cords and other tools the men continued off down that block. officers are also looking for a man accused of stealing from a kensington liquor store by shoving a bottle of bubbly straight down his pants. cameras captured him opening the box of champagne inside the wine and spirits on west girard avenue. seconds later he put the bottle in the front of his pants then ran out the door. if you recognize this thief, please call east detectives. >> okay. police are searching for a penn state student missing since friday. 23-year-old john steindorf told his parents he was set to graduate. when they drove to state college for commencement he wasn't there. his family soon discovered law no longer enrolled and he left his apartment no id or money. they said they are worried and just want him home safe and they're asking anyone with information to call police.

today the eagles hosted the tenth annual adam taliaferro foundation luncheon. the event held at lincoln financial field is in honor of taliaferro who was paralyzed while playing for penn state. the foundation provides emotional financial and educational support to those who suffer similar spinal injuries. >> meteorologist adam joseph joining us now. i think many of us are hoping that some rain will eventually come our way for the lawns. >> the lucky ones. another small chance tomorrow unfortunately not a lot. as we take a look at center city the sunshine is back, some haze in the sky in the summer soup. dewpoints at 65 degrees. that's a measure of how much moisture is sitting in the atmosphere and we have ana's remnants which are pushing just to our south and out to sea. can't really take advantage of any of that rain and we have a cold front to the west that's

him nothing. >> now to a two-year-old who is alive today thanks to what a facebook photo revealed about him. avery fitzgerald's mom began to suspect something was wrong with her son's eye when she noticed spots on it. but it was this picture and that glow in the right eye that made her go to the doctor. that doctor confirmed avery had cancer of the eye but they caught it just in time before the cancer spread and likely saved his life. experts say if you see that white glow in pictures, you need to get that person to a doctor as soon as possible. it might be smog nothing but it could also be a life saving decision. >> just incredible. >> we're hearing more and more of those stories. >> absolutely. still ahead from olive oil to ink a local laundry guru shows us thousand get rid of common stains with not so common household ingredients. >> sounds like a nightmare. you show up to class and everyone including you is naked. that was not only reality for students at one california university, it was a graded requirement.

up so the northbound delay coming away from the delaware state line headed toward the blue route is going to grow as those crews arrive on the scene. we're also still watching a nasty wreck in bensalem that's shutting down state road between mill road and tennis avenue. again 13 gets you around that bad accident. some better news though on the northeast extension. the terrible tractor-trailer crash on the southbound side past lansdale is gone. same with the one in the backlog northbound but look at those speeds. 6 miles per hour as you come out of the mid-county tolls. there's a lot of red especially on the northbound side and those delays are spilling back here onto the blue route northbound. 476 coming away from the schuylkill its a slow long crawl up through mid-county because of the delays that continue on the northbound side of the northeast extension. motorcycle crash to avoid is in limerick along ridge pike near royersford road. a tree leaning on wires in tredyffrin township so conestoga road is shutdown old eagle school road gets you around that. a crash in winslow along 73 at blue anchor road.

the virginia and north carolina border heading out to sea so we can't really grab or enhance the rain here because that low is pulling away. also a front to the west showing a lot of showers thunderstorms and severe weather in the midwest. this energy is lifting to the north and west as ana is heading out so we get sinking air. so for tonight a spotty thundershower, downpour in a couple locations. otherwise everyone is warm and muggy, 63 to 66 degrees. the front sweeps off the coast early in the afternoon tomorrow so it's a humid start. it's warm in the afternoon 88 degrees but a drier finish when you're talking about how it feels when you step out. you're going to notice the difference from the morning to the afternoon. then as that front continues to race away and high pressure is over chicago winds will drain out of the northwest and it's much cooler with sunshine only 69 on wednesday but strong winds out of the northwest, 15 to 25 and that's

going to bring in very dry air spikes the threat for forest fires on wednesday and also the pollen continues to ride on the high side right through thursday and drops a little bit on friday but really no big relief. we have not seen pollen levels on the low variety now for maybe almost a week to two week period and it doesn't look like any break whatsoever. as we look at the exclusive accuweather 7-day forecast warm breeze, drier in the afternoon at 88. windy cooler on wednesday, 69. and despite the lack of rain it's picture perfect here on thursday, wall to wall sunshine, low humidity at 72. just a few clouds on friday, 76 and then the next chance for any widespread rain unfortunately looks to come over the weekend. a little unsettled on saturday at 76, mostly cloudy, a leftover thunderstorm possible sunday at 78. and then we dry out on monday, partly sunny at 82 degrees. so we're going to get a break from the intense heat and humidity but no break from the dry weather guys.
