>> ♪♪ >> "action news." delaware valley's leading news program. with matt o'donnell, tamala edwards, karen rogers and meteorologist, david murphy. >> ♪♪ >> a couple of cars overturned. deputies responding to frankford. we'll classify this as a mass casualty incident. >> it is 6:00 a.m. and breaking this morning this ugly scene this catastrophe that struck when an amtrak train goes off the tracks in philadelphia. >> firefighters arrived to find seven cars and the train's engine either turned over or upside down. at least five people are dead, dozens more are injured. we have live team coverage right here on "action news". >> reporter: rescue and recovery efforts in port richmond will be done under the sun but there will be a

blustery wind. i'm dave murphy and i'll have the late latest on that from accuweather. >> i'm karen rogers. i'll have the latest details on the roads and the rails coming up. >> federal safety teams will be on the scene part of the investigation asking the question what led to this deadly scene that amtrak train dee railing right here in philadelphia. >> the ac at a northeast regional train was heading from washington, d.c. to new york city. several cars flew off the tracks at nine. -- 9:30 last night. the area has a big curve to the left right where the crash happened. 238 passengers and five crew members were on board. five are dead and officials say they have not been able to account for all of the passengers. >> let's keep going on team coverage. right now we'll head over to chad pradelli as close to the scene as possible. chad tell us what you're

hearing and seeing. >> reporter: right now the recovery operation is still under way. police tell me two bodies have been recovered. the medical examiner took those away. police tell me a crane has been brought in to move some of these cars to get to at least two others who died in this main -- wreckage of mangled metal we're about 200 yards away from the crash site. you can see crews working to move some of these cars, get to those who were killed and also investigators are trying to get in there to determine the cause of this derailment. now, talking with mayor michael nutter, at last check he said not all of the passengers have been accounted for. the startled look of passengers with blood dripping from their wounds said it all. this was a mass cashed event just moments earlier passenger train 188 bound from washington, d.c. to new york derailed in of the -- derailed

in port richmond. for second there was silence then chaos. one passenger said it sounded like shopping carts crashing into one another. was there any warning at all before this happened. >> no, it happened in seconds. so, i don't know what happened. i have no idea but i'm okay and i'm praying that everyone else is. i don't have a scrape at all. >> reporter: emergency responders flooded the scene. 65 of the 243 aboard the train were transported to area hospitals. triage centers were set up for the influx of passengers. >> 65 transports. still six considered critical. and unfortunately a confirmed five individuals deceased. >> the incident has been placed under control. we're starting the family reunion particular indication process. we're working with amtrak, our hospitals, we're working with all of our human service agencies. >> reporter: so far the cause of the derailment is still under investigation. the department of homeland security is on scene and the

national transportation safety board will lead the investigation. governor tom wolf arrived from harrisburg and said the state is ready to assist. >> anything the state can do to help we stand ready to do that. the state police are here to help. >> reporter: and mayor michael nutter says it's unclear how many of the passengers who are injured or killed are from the philadelphia area. he says most are likely from washington, d.c., new york or new jersey areas. also if people are looking for loved ones, the mayor and other officials are saying call amtrak right now. again, the mayor says not all passengers have been accounted for and officials are now working to reconcile the manifest to those passengers who they're able to get in contact with. live in port richmond, chad pradelli, channel6 "action news." >> thank you chad. the local emergency rooms were flooded with people last night. extra staff was brought in at some of the hospitals to help with so many people. here at hahnemann around 30 people were brought in. four were admitted. the majority of people who came here to hahnemann had more relatively minor injuries. they had a variety of injuries, things like fractures, abrasions or burns. some are still being treated. >> basically the train tilted over and rolled. >> reporter: 243 people were on board the amtrak northeast regional train 188 heading to new york when it derailed around 9:30 last night in port richmond. >> there were so many people worse off than me right now. >> reporter: this was declared a level three mass casualty incident. the fire department says 18 medic units were brought on scene. last night six people were taken to the hospital in critical condition. those with less serious injuries could be seen climbing out of police wagons or exiting septa buses. some were still carrying their luggage. nearby residents rushed to the tracks to see what they could do to help.

>> as soon as we walked onto the track, there were already ambulance crews on the scene. >> reporter: train rich nat in there washington, d.c. and left 30th street station minutes prior to the crash. several people were carried from the train on stretchers. others were able to walk on their own but were limping or appeared unsteady. and again here at hahnemann they saw around 30 people who were on board that train last night. in all, at least 140 people went to area hospitals to be treated or evaluated. we're live in center city, katherine scott, channel6 "action news." >> okay, katherine thank you and a reminder amtrak has a hotline for people with questions about their friends and families who they believe were aboard train 188. that number is one-800- one-800-523-flynn 101. >> even deadier and more disastrous train disaster happened in the same spot 72 years ago. erin o'hearn has that story. >> reporter: the area of the crash is known as frankford junction. in 1943 the congressional

limited crashed killing 79 people. now, this is the front page of the new york times with the initial report of the crash. investigators would later say the car's axle just couldn't handle the speed and it snapped just as it approached frankford junction. now, obviously we still don't know how train 188 derailed but let's take a look at the scene right now. this is video that was shot this morning. it looks like it was shot earlier this morning before the sun came up but now as the sun is coming up it's a little bit easier for crews to do their job. but rescue crews have been on the scene since last night and the the light again now coming up certainly helping their efforts. but last night amtrak trucked in portable lights to illuminate the scene overnight as workers examined the wreckage. obviously there is a lot going on here. workers have to secure the situation and investigators have to examine the scene and scour the area for evidence. again, the cause of the accident can which killed five and injured dozens is still unclear.

we do know it was approaching that curve but passengers on board say there was no warning that there was loud bang and the train just all of a sudden jolted and following that, of course, was chaos and disaster. again, crews still on the scene and will likely be there all week as officials try to clean up and try to get some answers. of course certainly a lot of passengers and families of the deceased looking for those answers as well. of course we're going to keep you -- continue to keep you updated all morning. back to you guys. >> thank you erin. and these tracks shared by amtrak by septa it's a snarl for commuters. let's go to karen rogers. >> let's run down what's running and not running. no service on the northeast corridor between philadelphia and new york. all train service canceled and we don't know at this point for how long. trains are running on a modified schedule between d.c. and philadelphia and new york city and boston so running on a modified schedule. you can take new jersey

transit. if you could get to trenton you could take new jersey transit to new york. they're honoring your amtrak tickets at this point. atlantic city rail line also affected by this between 30th street station and pen salk can ken not running. now with septa the trenton shrine not running. they say it's not running today, possibly not even running the rest of the week. we still have to wait to see how all this unfolds as to how long we'll be dealing with these closures. what you can do said is take the west trenton line. they're adding extra cars to try to accommodate more passengers with that and also what you can do is if you can get to the frankford transportation center you could take that, use the market frankford line to get into the city. chestnut hill east is running chestnut hill west originally was not running it's running now but you'll see delays with that and also lots of closures in and around the area of port richmond. frankford avenue traffic is getting by but i would really avoid the area between torresdale and castor instead of frankford avoid this area take aramingo richmond or 95. also we're seeing portions of pike wheatsheaf buckius

56 degrees right now in allentown, 54 in reading 56 degrees in trenton. 56 in wilmington. philadelphia has bumped up into the low 60's. 62 in sea isle city and 59 in millville, new jersey. satellite shows you those clouds continuing to break up and evaporate locally and some of this stuff off to the north and west also beginning to develop some holes. officerall we think we're going to be under mostly sunny skies the majority of the day up in the lehigh valley. windy and cooler though, with a high of just 66 degrees. and down the shore we'll wind up mainly sunny but also windy and on the cool side, a eye high of 68 degrees right down along the boardwalk and in philadelphia we'll go for a much cooler high today of 69 degrees, a couple of urban centers might kick up into the low 70's. windy and cooler with winds running northwest gusting at times up to 35 miles per hour. 58 degrees by 8 o'clock, 64 by 11 o'clock. and then a little bit better in the afternoon. we'll be running in the upper 60's most of the time with that high of 69 right around 3:00 or 3:30 this afternoon.

at the ballpark tonight looks like a chillier night than we've had awhile. we're looking at temperatures dropping from the mid 60's down to the low 50's so roll that calendar back about a month when you think about how to dress tonight. 69 is today's high, windy and cooler sunny and nice tomorrow, 74 and another good one on friday, 76 degrees the high there. on saturday 82. clouds, some sunny breaks and during the afternoon in particular there's a chance of a spotty shower or maybe even a pop-up thunderstorm but it's not a washout. just keep your eyes on the skies and your storm tracker six app. sunday a high of 80. >> 6:12 now. the live coverage of the deadly train derailment continues. >> chopper six was over the toppled rail cars early this morning. much more on how this is impacting amtrak services with an update from 30th street station.

so all lanes opened there. we're seeing restriction os and pike wheatsheaf buckius sedgley butler corral and sepviva. watch for restrictions through those region. also no service between philadelphia and new york city with amtrak. it's canceled today and not shore for how long at this point. modified schedule running between d.c. and philadelphia. new york city and boston. you can take new jersey transit. they're honoring amtrak tickets between trenton and new york city. atlantic city rail line canceled through this point. septa's trenton line is canceled today. maybe through the end of the week they're saying. so they're adding extra cars with west trenton line to help you out. chestnut hill east line is running. chestnut hill west line running with a delay and on the big picture the one thing that we're noticing traffic moving okay through the region. no big accidents except this new one that's just coming in so i want to mention it on 422 approaching 23, this just happened a minute ago. this is your eastbound traffic and we see a couple can of vehicles people on the scene blocking the left lane.

traffic is jamming on 422 eastbound with that new accident coming in, matt and tam. >> thank you karen. staying with that transit angle of the derailment we turn to annie mccormick live at 30th street. >> reporter: matt it has been busy overnight after the red cross did set up a comfort center in one end of 30th street station. they're taking people from the shelters they set up last night. they're starting to take people who have been released from hospital, they need to come to the red cross center so that they can check in. then they can be accounted for and then the red cross along with other agencies like amtrak will help them get to where they need to be. well, take a look at this video. this is video from overnight at 30th street station where you can see actually passengers were stranded there for awhile. many of those passengers were the people that actually were on trains that came after train 188. they had to wait a long time. many of those people, though, put on buses as early as 3 o'clock in the morning so that they could get to new york. well, we did catch up with one

woman from brazil. she told us in spanish about her harrowing experience. she was travel wind gust her children. she has a limp and her daughter broke her leg. here's what she had to say in spanish. [speaking foreign language] >> reporter: that's miriam telling us that at that moment that moment of the impact she wanted to find her daughter and also her son because they were separated and that's all she wanted to do. again, they were released from the hospital this morning. you just heard karen talking about a modified schedule. a lot of amtrak riders that do come here every morning of course will learn that there's no amtrak service between philadelphia and new york. however, many of the other services are still running. for now reporting live outside of 30th street station annie mccormick channel6 "action news." >> thank you annie. 6:18 is the time.

>> an amtrak train abruptly overturned in philadelphia's port richmond section overnight killing at least five people and injuring dozens of others. it's train 188 that left washington, d.c. and was on its way to new york city when it derailed shortly after 9:00 last night. dozens of people have been taken to the hospital to be evaluated or treated. we're told that six of them are in critical condition. the ntsb said it is launching an investigative team. it's expected to arrive at the scene later this morning. >> amtrak recently announced its largest ridership in the northeast corridor, help 11.6 million. let's talk about how those people are getting a are round

on amtrak right new and what you can do because of the cancellations. so no service running between philadelphia and new york city on amtrak. so all service canceled. unclear at this point for how long it will be canceled but they are running on a modified schedule between d.c. and philadelphia, new york city and boston, new jersey transit is honoring amtrak tickets between trenton and new york city and atlantic city rail line affected with this. also septa no trenton service. the trenton line right now canceled possibly for the rest of the week. you can use the west trenton line. they're adding extra cars to that. chestnut hill east on time but chestnut hill west operating on a delay. other than that as you're heading out right now i want to talk about this accident on 422. just happened a few minutes ago but eastbound the left lane is blocked and you're looking live here 422 approaching 23 where you're jammed from oaks to this point and approaching 23. you've got that accident out there blocking the left lane and you can see how traffic is very quickly backing up there dave. >> that is a mess karen. all right. we've got temperatures in the 50's and low 60's this morning.

a little breezy, so on the cool side to start out. 59 by 9:00. 65 by noon and your high today is going to be much cooler than yesterday but still fairly comfortable, a windy sunny 69 degrees later this afternoon. if you're dressing the can kids sweatshirts this morning. they might want a jacket in the afternoon depending on where you are. some of the northern suburbs will only get up to the mid 60's this afternoon. severe weather across the can country not much but areas just to the west of houston including dallas fort worth and then back in toward the panhandle a little bit of a blush in northern california but not a lat of action in terms of severe weather. orlando showing fog. no related issues in any of our traveled destinations. >> we'll take a break root now. we'll come right back at 6:23 and give you the very latest on the train tragedy.

>> former bucks county congressman patrick murphy was on the train from washington when it crashed last night. he tweeted out these pictures. murphy was planning to get off at the trenton stop and head home to bucks county. he says he was on the middle of the train when he heard a bang then the train started wobbling and tipped over. "action news" spoke to murphy on the phone last night. >> obviously a lot of mayhem. people were pretty banged up and a lot of blood a lot of bleeding. i pulled myself up. the guy i kind of landed on,
