finish to our holiday weekend. in fact very warm, very comfortable across much of the delaware and lehigh valleys. we have a warm streak going on. today so far in philadelphia, 87 degrees was the high temperature. nine of the last 10 memorial days have been well above average and no changing that this time around. it's 86 in philadelphia, 85 in trenton. in millville 80 degrees but much cooler with that south facing wind. you can see how it's impacting our temperatures. beach haven 69, same thing in sea isle city but off to the north and west up in the poconos 81, lancaster 82. so you look at the wind gusts and there are some out there. we're gusting anywhere from 18 miles per hour in millville to as high as 26 miles per hour for trenton beach haven and wilmington but with that constant southerly breeze, yes, it is warm but it doesn't feel too bad with the moisture and the breezy conditions overhead. here's satellite6 along with action radar. high pressure situated to our south and east and it's protecting us from all of that unsettled weather that is off to our north and west.

a frontal boundary continues to lift to our north which is supplying us with a lot of warm air. so we'll talk about what's ahead. well, if you like today hopefully you had a chance to take it all in because the muggies are returning and our heat is on the way up. our first 90-degree weather day is in the forecast. with the warmth and humidity comes the threat of showers and thunderstorms. we'll take a closer look guys with the full and exclusive accuweather forecast. sharrie back inside to you. >> melissa thank you. many people are spending this memorial day down at the shore. the beaches were busy here in margate. some have been at the shore since friday night others just took a day trip. the weather has gotten warmer through the long holiday weekend but the ocean is still very cold. >> this is what it's all about, beautiful sunshine, beautiful beach beautiful water. little cold but the water that is. other than that -- 60 degrees. >> other than that it's all good. >> beachgoers of course now looking forward to the next holiday weekend the fourth of

july. >> and all this memorial day 2015 philadelphia paused to honor those who paid the ultimate price. on the water front today, two somber ceremonies to remember and to reflect. "action news" reporter nora muchanic has more. >> ready. [gunfire] >> reporter: hundreds of people game to the vietnam veterans memorial in penn's landing to honor and remember those who gave their lives for their country. >> one of the most important days of the year for me. and that's a lot of -- i left a lot of people, a lot of friends over there. this is how we recognize them. >> reporter: the key note speaker was robert gilotti a prisoner of war for 14 months who recalled his days held captive. >> days and days of boredom. you know interspersed with periods of pure terror. >> reporter: over the last seven years the vietnam veterans memorial has undergone a makeover to open it up protect it from vandals and make it more accessible to the public. >> the whole goal is again to get people to know it's here, to get people to come and

reflect on the sacrifices of the 646 who were lost in war. >> reporter: just across the street another service was held at the korean war memorial. one of those honored was corporal robert higgins of fishtown. he went missing during a battle in korea in 1951. it wasn't until last year his remains were identified using dna. >> it's bittersweet but we're glad that we're here for him to represent him and be part of his family. >> out of 11 of us on patrol, my captain and myself was the only ones that didn't get a bullet in our head. >> reporter: it's hurtful to those who served back in the 1950's but korea has been called the forgotten war. >> and to this day people don't remember the korean war. they really don't. us guys do. >> ♪♪ >> reporter: this memorial day they are remembered along with vietnam veterans and those from world war ii still with us as we thank them all living and dead for their

honor, duty and sacrifice. in penn's landing i'm nora muchanic, channel6 "action news. >> war memorials across the area were gathering places for residents saluting the nation's war dead. >> ♪♪ from young children to aging veterans, they came to the park in roxborough to remember neighbors who never came home. it was also a thank you to all who serve. and it was a day to wave the red white and blue in haddonfield new jersey whether it was on the sidewalks or parading down kings highway. after the annual parade wound through town, there was a remembrance service at the high school. and veterans laid a wreath and raised a flag to mark memorial day in hatfield, montgomery county. then a group of vets on motorcycles led the way in a parade along broad street. a color guard marched crisply in the parade carrying flags of all the military branches.

>> president barack obama also saluted americans who died in battle on this memorial day. he laid a wreath at the tomb of the unknowns and spoke to a large crowd at arlington nationalismnational cemetery. he said ourcemetery. >> this year we mark an historic anniversary. 70 years since our victory in world war ii. more than 16 million americans left everything they knew to fight for our freedom. good news for those of you coming back from the shore. that crash i had been talking about on the northbound garden state parkway past ocean city marmora is clear. the bad news is you're still looking at stop and go traffic northbound especially between the cape may tolls and the great egg toll plaza and the back roads coming back from the beach are very backed up like route 50 northbound from nine out to 49, 83 westbound busy from nine out to 47, nine itself bunches up especially around avalon boulevard, 47 northbound busy through dennis township, 347 is busy farther north. a.c. expressway that's improving. westbound side still sluggish around winslow but better than what we saw earlier on. ben franklin bridge just a little bit of heavy traffic on the downside heading into center city. our delays at the delaware memorial bridge have gotten better but 95 in delaware northbound still backed up from 273 up to 295. and our vehicle fire on the northeast extension northbound past mid-county out of the way but still sluggish through there as well. lots going on, rick. we'll check it again at 5:30. >> all right, we will. thank you matt. see you then.

we have new details about a deadly accident in millville, new jersey. overnight a third victim an eight-year-old passenger died at cooper hospital. two drivers were pronounced dead at the scene yesterday. "action news" reporter wendy saltzman is live near the scene of the crash with more. wendy. >> reporter: rick, eyewitnesses tell us that two cars were speeding here down book shoot tell me road when one of the drivers lost control plowed into a third car that was here at this stop sign that was carrying a woman and two kids. today we're learning this is the second time michelle zenchuk was in an accident on this corner, the first time she walked away. this time she did not. two mangled cars, one on top of the other show the sheer force of the crash that took the lives of 22-year-old christopher platt, 49-year-old michelle zenchuk and an eight-year-old family friend melissa headley. >> the three-year-old was conscious and able to communicate with us. the eight-year-old was not. >> reporter: the chief confirms the eight-year-old who was sitting in there rear

left seat of the silver camry passed away at cooper hospital. the driver's side of the car took the brunt of the force. when witnesses say the black honda civic driven by platt was speeding and swerved around another car it was passing and lost control. >> i saw the car coming and it was just hydroplaning and it just hit directly into her and the last thing i seen her do was lean over hold her hands out and that was it. >> reporter: glen who lives on this corner is friends with zenchuk. he was also here 13 years ago when she was the victim of another accident that almost killed her son, jake at the exact same spot. >> we got hit by a drunk driver who was passed out speeding. >> reporter: jake was 13 at the time. his mother lives two blocks away. >> all i can really say is i miss my mom. she was a great woman. she would have done anything for anybody. >> reporter: police are considering speed and possibly racing as a factor in the crash. christopher platt was leaving hits job at the racetrack down the street yesterday where he

worked as a flagger. >> he would never hurt anybody intentionally, anybody ever; never. he was a great person. >> reporter: today jake's three-year-old niece who was in the back passenger side is recovering. she was the sole survivor in this tragic holiday crash. >> just happened to be in the car they were in planning a fun day. >> reporter: the eight-year-old we're told is zenchuk's daughter's stepdaughter. they were planning a fun outing for the memorial day weekend. residents say speed has always been a issue on this roadway coming from the race way and they're asking something be done before another life is lost. live in millville i'm wendy saltzman channel6 "action news. >> wendy, thank you. meantime police are investigating a home invasion and sexual assault in south philadelphia. the incident happened around 5:30 this morning on the 1800 block of south rose wood street. police say a woman told them

that a man wearing a mask broke into her home demanded money and sexually assaulted her. the suspect then fled in the victim's 2007 silver to it today. it was recovered a few blocks away. police are checking the neighborhood for surveillance cameras. in west philadelphia, detectives are trying to find out who gunned down a young man early this morning. about 1:30 a.m. they found him lying on the playground at 40th and aspen shot in the head and back. there's no word on a motive and the 24-year-old victim's identity has not been released. >> still ahead on "action news" tonight, more outdoor activities in the warm spring and summer months of course means more exposure to mosquitos. coming up in health check tonight what sense those biting bugs are most attracted to. >> pool season is here. find out the swimming schedule for one of the biggest public pools in our region just ahead. and looking live now outside through sky 6hd over

severe storms to hit over the holiday weekend. at least 13 people are dead after a tornado hit a town on the mexican border in texas. the force blew out windows and littered the streets with debris. the storm was strong enough to flip cars up. storms keep firing up across the central plains. thousands of folks there are under evacuation orders in texas tonight. >> mosquito season is here. if you want to decrease your chance of becoming a target be careful of the scent you're giving off. mosquitos are attracted to both body outdoer and deodorants and subsequent we wear. many skin scents have lactic acids which they love. >> mosquitos are at tracked to lactic acids. >> dermatologists then jeff lucas says some foods and drinks can make you more

mosquito bait. people with beer in their bloodstream are bitten more often. seeing the doctor with five to 10 other people may not seem like a good idea but it's a growing trend and it's getting big results. in shared medical appointments, patients with similar conditions like diabetes they go together and for 90 minutes they see their doctor plus severaly they still have individual appointments with their doctors. >> veterans were honored today in gloucester city, new jersey. people gathered at the park to hear several speakers on this

memorial day. at the home of the wall of honor that lifts of the name of all gloucester city residents killed in war. also today they laid a wreath on the delaware river. it was taken on a remotely controlled wooden boat constructed by life long gloucester city resident frank bunch. >> ♪♪ marching bands entertained a parade of people here in ardmore today. lower merion's annual memorial day event stepped off this morning along greenfield avenue. the parade made its way to saint paul seminary in ardmore for a special memorial day service. they also enjoyed a holiday parade in springfield delaware county today. among those in the parade the springfield high school marching band. the parade began at veterans memorial park and ended at the township building where they had a wreath laying ceremony.

>> blackberry is going to be laying off an unknown number of employees worldwide. the job cuts will affect people who make the hardware, software and applications for its phones. the company is looking to reduce the size of its device operations to make it profitable again. students all over the country are putting on their caps and gowns and getting ready to say goodbye to school. and loved ones are preparing

to spend big bucks to congratulate them. the national retail federation conducted a survey and found americans are planning to spend close to $5 billion on graduation gifts this commencement season. that's the highest amount in the survey's 10 year history. the survey found the average gift giver will spend about $102 and will shop for two graduates. >> a memorial day parade made its way through one bucks county town today. a traveling band was part of the big event along route 13 in bensalem. boy scout troop 130 was also in the parade and veterans with several local v.f.w.'s marched today as well. in maple shade a parade kicked off from a v.f.w. on east main street this morning. the maple shade wildcat marching band took part today as well as boy scout and girl scout troops. the parade made its way to the veterans memorial monument for a ceremony. american legion post 805 hosted its annual memorial day

>> price's run pool in wilmington was opened all weekend long. the department of parks and recreation decided to open the pool early this year. in the past city pools and spray parks were opened closer to summer. price's run pool will be opened the weekend of may 30th and june 6th and all city pools will be opened starting saturday june 13th. >> all right. just in time because we're in for some hot weather. meteorologist melissa magee back at the "action news" big board. tomorrow we hit 90, hm. >> yeah, that's right. it's warm today but these numbers will keep on climbing as our week wears on, guys. we'll show you picture outside sky six live in h did from our pagoda camera in reading pennsylvania. a mostly sunny sky overhead. comfortable condition but definitely warmer than average for this time of year. it's 86 degrees to the north

and west allentown the lehigh valley. reading 84 degrees. philadelphia 86. trenton 85. but much cooler along the coast as that south facing wind from beach haven down to sea isle city temperatures are only in the upper 60's. now, check out the dewpoints. that is the level of how much moisture is in the atmosphere and any time you have dewpoint temperatures at 60 degrees or lower, we've got a comfortable air mass overhead. current dewpoint temperature in the city 64, and 61 there in dover. the humidity levels will start to increase overnight tonight and especially on tuesday, so dewpoints tomorrow in the lower 60's, then we climb up to the upper 60's wednesday and thursday and any time that happens, you have the humid air overhead to close to oppressive so you'll notice the difference overhead come tomorrow and especially by the afternoon. here's satellite6 along with action raid today. high pressure is in control. it's been to our south and east for the majority of our weekend here so we continue to tap into that return flow. we're getting those winds coming in out of the south and

west. it helps also to keep all of the unsettled weather off to our north and west as well. this warm front continues to lift to the north so to help supply our region with a lot of warmth overhead. now we'll take you down across storm tracker six live double scan radar 3-d. this is where we are finding the unsettled weather tornado watches for oklahoma even for texas and this severe weather threat has been plaguing this region, some locations have picked up a lot of rain, more rain this year than all of last year so far with this system coming on through. back here at home tonight the call from accuweather we're dry, mostly clear and comfortable, 65 in philadelphia, 61 in allentown for the overnight low and 62 in toms river. future tracker six showing you 10 o'clock in the morning it's a very warm start to the dame 81 degrees in the city. 74 up in the poconos and as we go throughout the afternoon hours, we'll max out in the upper 80's to near 90 with a stray shower or thunderstorm north and west of the city. the five day at 5:00 showing you it's hot and humid

>> ♪♪ >> "action news" continues with meteorologist adam joseph, jaime apody rick williams and monica malpass. >> ♪♪ >> hello again. monica will be along at 6:00 tonight. sharrie williams joining us and here's what's happening on "action news" this evening. it's been six days since more than 100,000 gallons of oil spilled off the coast of california and the operation to save wildlife and property continues tonight. plus, our military men and women fighting terrorism overseas pause to honor the fallen on this memorial day. also today families mark

the unofficial start of summer with big get togethers at parks all across the area. >> now the details. it's been nearly a week since an oil pipeline leaked tens of thousands of gallons of oil across a section of california coastline. since then, crews have worked day and night to stop the spread of the crude which now measures 10 square miles and officials say they still don't know just how big of an impact the spill has had on local wildlife. abc's randy hicks has the latest. >> reporter: these are the lives rescue teams are now desperately trying to save many pelicans coated in oil. the dark toxic sludge covering a baby elephant seal's face. this sea lion died over the weekend. >> that's when the emotion starts to come in. a lot of us will say we'll all be out there and talking about it and we'll start tearing up a little bit. >> reporter: it's believed up to 101,000 gallons of oil spilled from this ruptured pie line. experts say injured wildlife

roaming through the spills are now showing up as far as 50 miles away. >> we're keeping teams out in the environment as long as we have to. >> reporter: cleanup crews are also racing remove oil washing up on what were once pristine beaches now closed this memorial day as protesters hit the streets angry over the environmental disaster and carrying this mock pipeline. >> people are outraged. we have seen enough atrocities with the oil industry. >> reporter: pipeline owner planes all american says it is still trying to figure out what caused the rupture. >> we regret this unfortunate accidental release. >> reporter: with so much oil cleanup crews say it could be weeks before these beaches reopen. volunteers and locals helping to clean the beaches have been turned away over the past week because of safety concerns. starting today though, they're now being trained so they can help in the cleanup efforts. in los angeles brandy hicks channel6 "action news." >> several anonymous telephone

threats called in against at least six commercial airliners today have been found not to be credible. but they did cause headaches for hundreds of passengers at three big airports. two u.s. military jets escorted an air france flight into j.f.k. after someone claimed a chemical weapon was on board. well the plane was searched and nothing was found. at the same airport a saudia arabiaian airlines plane was also checked because of a threat. other threats also involve newark international and boston's logan airport. >> meanwhile in the middle east isis is claiming new victories in its siege on iraq an war of words has erupted between the u.s. and iraqi officials. ashton carter recently said in an interview that the iraqi military showed "no will to fight"." carter also accused forces of bailing on ramadi leaving behind weapons tanks and and humvees claimed by extremists.

iraqi officials are vowing to claim reclaim ramadi in the next few days. more on the battle against isis in iraq as well as the plane threats and the california oil spill cleanup. >> military men and women serving overseas took time to honor their lost brothers and sisters today. in kabul utz general john campbell placed a wreath at a memorial to honor soldiers can killed in combat in afghanistan. more than 2300 american soldiers and more than 1100 coalition soldiers have lost their lives in action during the last 14 years. >> aim, fire. >> here at home, they dressed in historical garb to honor the life of charles maceuen.

he served in the civil war. officials unveiled a new plaque dedicated to his service next to where his body is buried. >> well, the trumpet sounded this morning in bucks county in honor of the fallen on this memorial day. >> ♪♪ they gathered outside of the doylestown courthouse for a special flag raising this morning. veterans saluted the stars and stripes while remembering the military men and women who fought for our country. >> ♪♪ residents gathered outside of the courthouse in media delaware county this morning to mark memorial day. children wore their best red white and blue outfit as officials spoke about the sacrifices made by our men and women in uniform. >> ♪♪ and in narberth montgomery county, the sound of bag pipes filled the air as their

parade, their memorial day parade kicked off this morning along north wynnewood road. the entire community has been known to turn out for this event young and old. children showing their patriotism by waving small flags. one of the highlights this morning a special performance from the philadelphia freedom band. >> grills were going on this memorial day. fire commissioner derek sawyer and nick houston from jack's firehouse restaurant reminded everyone to do it safely. whether grilling by charcoal or gas keep a fire extinguisher within easy reach. but keep the kids away from the grille. >> you can show your kids around but do not have them watch the grille one unattended. do not have them putting their hands anywhere near it. >> for charcoal get a chimney like this to start the coals. it's safer than using lighter fluid. if you use propane make sure the tank is properly filled

"action news" reporter sarah bloomquist is live on fairmount park with more on people celebrating this memorial day around the barbecue. hi sara. >> reporter: [inaudible] by midday the grilles were going all across fairmount park in this steady strong breeze sent the smell of good barbecue all through the air on this memorial day. >> we got all different kind of food, beef brisket, ribs hamburgers. we know how to throw a party. >> reporter: no slab of beef is too big today and there's no shortage of sides to go with it. >> ribs, brisket, greens with turkey butts in them, macaroni salad, pasta hamburgers. >> reporter: it's a day to celebrate friends and family just being together and the weather couldn't be better. >> we could not have had better weather. it's like god just said, those people are going to be there on that day and we're just going have fun everywhere

the northeast extension rick and sharrie. southbound side the direction everyone is going approaching mahoning valley taking out the left lane. miles and miles of heavy traffic as you head down towards the lehigh valley. on the way home from cape may we had a crash earlier on the garden state parkway northbound. that's long gone but still heavy traffic northbound from the cape may tolls basically up to the great egg tolls. if you're taking 50 northbound, that's crowded from nine out to 49, 83 westbound is busy from nine out to 47, 47 definitely a crowd in a long slow moving line of traffic northbound from 615 to 610 petersburg road. 347 northbound heavy towards 47 and headed towards 55. if you're headed the other way on 55, southbound near 47 delsea drive in deptford township there's a brush fire taking out the left lane. fire crews on the scene there. a.c. expressway westbound still has sluggish traffic by winslow. as you get farther north on 42 it's definitely crowded at this point from lower landing road basically on up to 295 and mass transit don't forget

across-the-board we're on a holiday which in most cases means a sunday schedule with still slow speeds in delaware and new castle county if you're coming back if the delaware beaches, once you come up highway one and merge onto 95 there, speeds just in the teens headed up towards 295 coming southbound off the delaware memorial bridge definitely better than it was earlier but speeds are still in the 20's there southbound on 295 by route 13 so still definitely a crowded situation. meanwhile this is the ben franklin bridge westbound side. little heavier than when we looked before. now definitely crowded from the mid span on into eighth and vine with a lot of volume headed into center city at this point. the betsy ross bridge or walt whitman bridge might be better bets for you. and we had that earlier problem on the northeast extension with a vehicle fire past plymouth meeting. that's cleared out. headed in that direction you're okay. it's coming southbound that's a little bit busy. rick and sharrie back to you. >> matt thank you again. breaking news to report now from ocean county, new jersey, where fire crews are over the scene of a small

brush fire here in reed road. firefighters have been battling this decent size brush fire since late this afternoon, just after 4:30. that's when the flames broke out in a wooded area here. this is jackson township in ocean county. >> fire officials have set up we are being told a command post at reed road. we heard from matt telling us that traffic in this area is being affected at this point as you can see the smoke billowing in the area from this brush fire. no word on the number of acres that are being affected but there are no reports of any injuries. okay, still to come on "action news" at 5:00, hundreds gather in one camden county community to salute local members of the armed forces who defended the u.s. in battle. we'll show you how they did it. >> also the annual memorial day celebration brought out scores of residents and visitors to the jersey shore and melissa is in for adam tonight. sure is hot tomorrow, hm. >> that's for sure, rick. temperatures currently across much of the midatlantic region in the 80's.

satellite six, you can see that ridge of high pressure has carved out dry conditions from philadelphia down through raleigh north carolina but you do notice on the backside of that ridge we are picking up some moisture. and this will be our weather maker. we'll have to watch as it works its way eastward into tuesday. the call for accuweather mainly clear comfortable dropping down to 65 in the city and 61 in the suburbs. future tracker six showing you 7:30 in the morning bright sunshine overhead so no issues. in fact with the sun overhead these temperatures are going to warm quite nicely by the evening however 6:00 p.m. we'll be tracking showers and thunderstorms popping up from a northwest direction and they will stay mainly north and west of philadelphia by tomorrow afternoon. so in allentown tomorrow nice mix of sunshine and clouds, a high temperature of 89 degrees. an isolated afternoon thunderstorm is likely but if you're traveling down the shore tomorrow, it looks like you're going to be dry. sunny and much cooler in
