>> developing now on "action news," detectives are trying the figure out if a stray bullet killed a man in north philadelphia. >> a woman breaks her silence as the search for a sex predator intensifies. she says the man who just attacked someone else attacked her first. >> killer storm in the nation's midsection wash away homes and cars with families still inside. we are monitoring the desperate search. >> good morning, it's 6:30 on this tuesday may 26th. karen is off. let's head over to dave murphy
6:31 am
for accuweather and matt pelman for traffic. good morning. >> good morning, everybody. we're off to another nice start across the region much lots of sunshine up over the horizon. take a look at satellite shows you most of the cloud cover locally has evaporated. while there's a little more out to the west looks like we'll get nothing more than a sweep of clouds later this afternoon. lots of sun means lots of sunscreen. peak time to get a burn is between 10:00 in the morning and 4:00 in the afternoon. u.v. index will be running high. if it clouds up at times during the summer you could still get a burn through the clouds. 66 in philadelphia, 63 in wilmington, 60 in allentown 65 in millville. comfortable for now. as we go into the afternoon though the humidity will tend to rise just a little bit. and it is going to get warm. by 3 o'clock we're at 87. and i'm expecting a high of 88 degrees around 3:45 this afternoon. by 6 o'clock still holding onto 85. and your pollen counter is in the medium high range the next several days. i'll point out to you that we are looking at grasses as an added irritant now and that means those of you who were primarily bothered by trees
6:32 am
well, you might be getting extra itchy eyes now because the grass pollen is also a part of the package. drenching thunderstorms possible tomorrow, matt pelman. details coming up in that seven day. >> all righty david. with the temperatures on the rise and the speeds are on the decline. as we like at 42 this morning we've expected heavier traffic than normal because of people heading back from the beach after the long holiday weekend and speeds are starting to drop. doesn't look too bad right here by creek road in the northbound lanes but overall between the atlantic city expressway and 295 now average speeds are in the 30's. so, they have declined a little bit and we expect that that volume is only going to increase as the morning progresses. volume has increased along 95. southbound side now jammed solid from academy to cottman. then farther south you're really on the brakes because of this poor guy. broken down suv here by allegheny avenue. it's still taking out the left lane. that means traffic is barely moving as you come south of the betsy ross bridge through this point. everybody tries to funnel out of that left lane into the right lanes along 95
6:33 am
southbound. 95 northbound at the girard point bridge, that broken down work van has cleared out. that's good news. we still have the traffic light troubles in grays ferry at 34th street and grays ferry avenue. they're dark so you have to treat that intersection like a four-way stop and the congestion that's caused by that could spill back onto the schuylkill expressway. at this .76 just starting to see its typical westbound slowing there by city avenue. matt. >> thanks, matt. breaking right now police are searching for the three people who pulled off an overnight home invasion in northeast philadelphia. it happened on the 2100 block of tyson avenue just before 3 a.m. police say the three men broke in beat up someone on the second floor and as they were leaving, out the front door officers arrived. the men turned around and fled out the back. canine units are helping in the search. the man who was beaten up was not seriously hurt. a woman who says a masked man broke into her south philadelphia home and sexually assaulted her is speaking out. and police say they are investigating the possibility that this same man victimized
6:34 am
another woman. "action news" reporter vernon odom is live outside the police special victims unit. vernon. >> matt, special victims is looking for a sexual predator they believe has struck twice in the point breeze section of south philadelphia. his latest attack before sunup yesterday, memorial day. the first victim spoke exclusively with our own dann cuellar. [speaking foreign language] >> the interpreter: he told me to give give him the money. i didn't have any money it was money. >> reporter: she says the assailant resembles this man in this sketch. after telling him she didn't have any money she was shocked by his next move. [speaking foreign language] >> the interpreter: he dropped his pants and motioned that he wanted to have sex with me. i got really scared seventy two. [speaking foreign language] >> the interpreter: he grabbed me by the hair and throat. i thought he was going kill me. >> reporter: she decided to try to fight him off. during the struggle the tv set in her bedroom fell to the
6:35 am
floor making a lot of noise. the attacker fled. police believe it may be the same man who broke into another woman's home a few blocks away in the 1800 block of rose wood. in this case, too, the woman awoke to find a man standing over her bed. he demanded money then sexually assaulted her before fleeing in her 2007 silver toyota which was recovered a few blocks away. >> just makes my stomach turn. >> it's horrific just hearing about it. like it's really grosses me out. it's disgusting. >> reporter: yesterday there was anger and unease in the neighborhood with the assailant still on the loose. police describe him as a black male about 5-foot nine, medium build. in both cases sources say he was wearing red or orange gloves. for her part, the victim in the first assault believes he lives somewhere in the neighborhood and worries he's still out there. >> i don't want this to happen to any other woman am ily still very much in fear of this man and i hope they catch him soon.
6:36 am
>> reporter: something about that sketch seems familiar to you our think you recognize them or if you have other key information about this case, please contact philadelphia police here at special victims or call 911 and they'll put you right through. live in hunting park, vernon odom, channel6 "action news." >> okay, thank you vernon. and develop overnight a 19-year-old man was gunned down on a north philadelphia street but police are not sure if he was the intended target or a tragic bystander. investigators found seven spent shell casing on the 2100 block of north 30th street last night. police say one of those shots struck the victim and from far away. so they wonder was the deadly shot intended or was it actually a stray bullet. no arrests have been made but city surveillance cameras did record two men running from that scene. and out of texas where the waters continue to rise at this hour, the latest round of severe weather has spawned deadly tornadoes and flash flooding. and many people are still unaccounted for. "action news" reporter erin o'hearn has more on the
6:37 am
devastation and on some of these stories that really hit home. good morning, erin. >> reporter: good morning it's just heartbreaking. some of these families don't have closure yet and of course the holiday weekend turned tragic for two families who were in the area vacationing. this is laura mccomb and her two children six-year-old andrew and four-year-old leighton. they are among those missing. laura's husband jonathan wareless queued from the river and is in a hospital recovering from serious injuries. now mccomb's sister says the family held hands as their vacation home floated down the river and then when it hit a bridge and broke in half, they were separated. >> 1 o'clock in the morning she called me. she said i'm in a house. i'm floating down the river. tell mom and dad i love you and pray. i think recognizing with what's happening with the weather, we all know and we have accepted that they're gone. >> reporter: recovery teams are set to resume looking for the 12 members of the two
6:38 am
families but officials note noted the search component was over mean nothing survivors are expected to be found in the debris. governor greg abbott of texas was pleading with residents to obey evacuation orders as he added 24 counties to his disaster declaration comparing these flood waters to a tsunami. authorities were also searching for victims and assessing damage across the texas-mexico border where a tornado monday killed 13 people and left at least five unaccounted for. so just tragic news coming from down south tam. >> absolutely. thank you, erin. several people swept away by rough surf remain missing along the florida and the gulf coast. the dane russ rip tides are to blame for at least three deaths over the holiday weekend. more than 500 people were rescued. >> always something to remember especially as summer, the official start of summer approaches. >> you swim parallel to the beach. we'll be saying that again and again but that's how you get out of it. storm tracker six live double scan and we have no precipitation out there and as
6:39 am
we take look outside sunshine is coming up nice and bright down the shore and elsewhere across the region and it's going to be a nice day on the beach similar to yesterday with high temperatures getting up close to 80. of course it's still kind of chilly in the water. 66 degrees is your current air temperature in philadelphia. your dewpoint starting to creep up a little closer to humid territory. by this afternoon i think it will feel at least slightly humid out there, a little worse than yesterday. winds out of the south at just 9 miles per hour. as we take a look at future tracker six the rest of the way you can see how we're generally clear. there at times will be a little sweep of clouds. by 6 o'clock tonight might be a couple of showers north of the poconos and we can't totally rule out something pong in the northern and western suburbs but the model for what it's worth really doesn't slow much of anything. i think probably most of you will be dry both day and this evening as we roll through day it's going to be warm. 70 degrees by 8 o'clock up to 79 as soon as 11 o'clock. and then spending the afternoon in the mid to upper 80's. 86 by 2 o'clock. that 88-degree high probably hitting about 3:45 this
6:40 am
afternoon, rather late in the day and then 86 by 5 o'clock a little breezy like it was yesterday, fairly sunny and again a little bit more humid as we go through the day versus yesterday when the humidity behaved itself. 88 degrees in allentown, 89 in reading, 86 today in wilmington. these are your high temperatures. and down the shore like yesterday on or about 80 degrees a bit humid mostly sunny and breezy and not too bad overall. tomorrow there is a low risk anyway just to the north of allentown and up through the poconos of any thunderstorm that forms producing strong damaging winds and perhaps some hail. there's always a chance that this line will be moved a little closer to philadelphia by the time we get to tomorrow. for the rest of us there's still the chance of thunderstorms but the big issue would be drenching downpours and future tracker six shows you that through the day, up until noon, nothing more than maybe a passing quick shower. it's really later in the afternoon, say, four or 5 o'clock when we'll be on the lookout for this stuff to begin to well up north and west of philadelphia and the poconos. and then later in the evening it does come down through the lehigh valley, through the northern and western suburbs
6:41 am
and the i-95 corridor could pick up some of this. again, the main threat would be drenching downpours but ahead of any of those downpours you could get a sudden burst of wind and there might even be some strong wind gusts especially to the north and west. after the sun goes down, the support for this fades quickly and so do the thunderstorms so that it looks like it's all off the map by about nine or 10 o'clock tomorrow night. 88 is today's high in your exclusive accuweather 7-day warm an bit more humid. tomorrow definitely more humid, 87 degrees is the high and we have that chance of showers and thunderstorms late in the day or evening. drenching downpours maybe some gusty winds. on thursday a front comes through, clouds with some sung and there will be another chance of some storms around but with an increase in clouds and temperatures a little lower, i think that wednesday is probably the better chance. we'll see something on thursday as a front comes through. and then the front is on gone on friday, 83, partly sunny warmer on saturday, upper 80's and back to 81 with more clouds on sunday and maybe a pop-up shower or thunderstorm in the afternoon. sunday doesn't look like a washout, though. >> okay, enjoy that phillies game.
6:42 am
>> yeah. >> thank you. it is 6:41. up next, more stories you didn't see last night. drivers look on in disbelief as a wrecked truck burst into flames. >> word is coming in that a city under fire for its policing tactics has cut a deal with the department of justice. matt. >> blue route on southbound side heavy traffic headed towards delays on the schuylkill expressway. more serious problems elsewhere on 476 and we'll check that broken down vehicle on 95 when "action news" continues on this tuesday morning. >> ♪♪
