dozens of people being rescued from the fast rising water. matt gutman starts us off in richmond texas. good morning, matt. >> reporter: good morning, robin. all the weather is targeting houston. you can maybe hear the thunder behind me. i'm in somebody's backyard. 50 yards that way is the br a rks zos river. it's already spilling over. across texas, reservoirs lakes rivers simply can't hold off of this water. this morning, flood emergency. oklahoma texas, and kansas getting hammered overnight. by more rain and hail. >> we're in trouble. >> reporter: inches of rain sum merging cars in kals. the water catching motorists offguard. >> three water rescues all in a very narrow area. >> we have two more trapped in high water. people standing on top of a car. >> reporter: outside oklahoma city streets nearly impassable. rescuers working round the

clock, pulling off rescue after rescue. >> we're just blessed to be out with our lives. >> reporter: across texas, thousands forced to evacuate. packing up what they could as floodwaters continue to rise. a flurry of lightning bolts illuminating the sky. in kansas, this tornado. since sunday 91 reported tornadoes. in texas alone, 29 reported. and the death toll here rising to 20. seven still missing along the blanco river in texas. which, you can see barging through the doors of sara's vacation rental this week. there with her family she shot this cell phone video. the water rising and with it the fear. >> should we call 911? >> we're okay. 911 is not going to be able to get to us. we're okay all right? >> reporter: she told our story to our affiliate. >> they kept calming me down.

trying to calm me down. my main concern was getting trapped in that house with my daughter in there. >> reporter: now the brazos river is not expected to crest until this woke end. it will get two feet higher than it already is. that's what's so daunting after a week of following all this flooding an all those deaths the worst may not be over for the folks here. robin? >> that's right, matt. we go to ginger. >> the worst is not over yet. we're not yet done with the record-breaking may rainfall. up to five inches of rain if just four hours overnight around dallas. that's why you saw scenes like this playing out everywhere. it's not just dallas though. it's happening from eastern kansas down through oklahoma to corpus christi this morning. just as matt said closing in on houston. flash flood warnings in pockets. it's happening now, it's dangerous now. flash flood watches, just spread across the plains. another two to three inches through sunday. shreveport down to houston.

cincinnati to memphis. a severe weather pocket in west texas. hail damaging wind and yes, more tornado possibilities. now the shocking indictment. former house speaker dennis hastert charged with trying to lie to the fbi and hiding secret payments. jon karl has the story. >> reporter: indictment alleges he had a dark secret in his distant past and he was willing to pay millions to keep it a secret. dennis hastert was once the most powerful man in congress. now he stands accused of a dark past before his career in politic. the 73-year-old has been charged with bank fraud and lying to the fbi in connection to a promise he made to pay an inside fied person $3.5 million in hush money. prosecutors say he started making the payments five years ago. to quote compensate and conceal

his prior misconduct. it's quite a fall for if man who was chosen speaker of the house because he had a reputation as being mr. clean. >> it's popular these days to ask political figures what mistakes they have made. where they failed. as a frm onner history teacher, i know such analysis is best tempered by time and reflection. and that is probably best left to others. >> reporter: the indictment doesn't say what he was trying to cover up or who he was paying. but it points to his time as a high school teacher and wrestling coach in yorkville, illinois. and notes the unnamed person has known hastert for most of his or her life. the indictment accuses him of structuring withdrawals from his bank accounts to avoid being found. when asked about it he told the fbi, yeah i kept the cash. that's what i'm doing. his former constituents are surprised by the news.

>> you're prideful of people coming from your community and trying to make a difference in illinois. it's just disappointing. >> reporter: no word from dennis hastert this morning or from his legal team. he's reportedly stepped down from his job as a powerful washington, d.c. lobbying firm. that firm removed his bio from the website. >> we don't know what conduct he was trying to cover up? >> reporter: that is a complete mystery. no indication whatsoever. ined that indictment it says hi time as a wrestling coach and a high school teacher back in yountville illinois way back when is material to this. apparently it's something from then. >> you'll have more on sunday "this week." to trouble in the skies. pilots on four commercial planes saying they were tacted by lasers flying over new york last night. david kerley is at reagan national with that story. good morning, david. >> reporter: good morning,

robin. this happened between 9:30 and 10:00 last night. it's one of the most dangerous parts of flight. just after takeoff, the pilots are climbing and they're hit by lasers. >> i thought it was just a rogue laser. but they were definitely aiming for us a couple of times. because we saw it a couple of times in the cockpit. >> reporter: hit by lasers. not just one. the warning wept out. >> i have two aircrafts right over where you are got struck by a green laser. american 185, if row see a green laser, be careful. >> reporter: within seconds, that airbus 321 hit, too. >> american 185, we just had a laser strike. left side. >> reporter: all four jets hit reported seeing the laser coming from an area on long island believed to be this state park. but for the evening, the dangerous game was over. the faa is telling us there were no injuries. the american flight landed in los angeles without problems.

this is a serious issue for the feds george. it's a five-year prison sentence if they catch anybody using a laser. >> they have to crock downack down thank you, david. the massive manhunt. police looking for a suspect in the shooting of an officer. the man got away after stealing a car, shooting the driver. linzie janis is here with the story. >> reporter: good morning, george. we just spoke with police who said they're zeroing in on the third suspect right now. officers surrounding a small farmhouse in liberty, kansas, where they believe he's holed up. all of this starting when police tried to pull over an suv in oklahoma. this morning, a frantic manhunt under way. after a police pursuit took a dangerous turn. >> i think some other units may be in pursuit. and it sounds like they're taking fire. >> reporter: an oklahoma officer shot in the head while following three suspects in a 50-mile-long

chase over two states. >> armed and dangerous. >> reporter: pursuit outside of tulsa, oklahoma thursday night. police officers pulling over a vehicle with two men and a woman inside. officials say the car sped off. with the police cars racing after them the suspects opening fire. one bullet striking an officer in the head. his vehicle rolling off the road. >> we've got one patrol car that i can see upside down. we van officer out. they're working on him right now. >> reporter: officials finding assault rifles and body armor inside. >> they have two in custody, one on foot. >> reporter: police able to catch two of the suspects. the third getting abap car jacking a vehicle and shoo shooting the driver. s.w.a.t. teams now joining the manhunt. setting up a perimeter around the woods where police believe the suspect may be hiding.
