expired. but as we zoom in we want to show you that this still a very formidable storm. we're still seeing some rotation. that doesn't always indicate it's a tornado but it does show the strength of that storm system. some heavy rain, a lot of lightning strikes haul town sharptown and motors all in the path of this storm and paul if we can switch it over to show the hail that we are looking at, some hail that's been moving through wilmington airport has been reporting hail and this is a hail core and we're looking at hail that could be an inch in diameter. that's pretty big hail. that storm system is moving to the east at 20 miles per hour. and we have had reports of hail, some gusty winds, wind gusts up to 60 miles per hour as well. so, this is one of the many storms that we're looking at that are cropping up. we had one rounds this morning, another round developing this afternoon and you can see this cluster of storms with 30 lightning strikes really right over the i-95 corridor. the problem with these storms
5:01 pm
is that they're dropping a tremendous amount of rain in a very short period of time. i know i always say we need the rain. the problem when we have an air mass that is really saturated like it is today we're getting the rain falling at the rate of one to 2 inches per hour. rain like that does not get really soaked up into the atmosphere. it's running off and it is causing flooding. this shows the rainfall rate. where you see the green that's about an inch an hour but this cell the same cell we were tracking with the potential for a tornado has rain falling at the rate of 3-inches per hour. it's moving east at 20 miles an hour so it's fairly slow. this likely will cause some flash flooding. so once again, that term turn around don't drown do not run into flooded roads because your car can stall and it can really be carried away. so that flash flood warning continues until 6:45. this is for new castle county. this is where up to 4-inches of rain have already fallen and more on the way.

>> meteorologist adam joseph is here to update us on what could be a very wet evening for many of us. >> yes, a stormy afternoon and the night is still young. these storms will continue to drift through through much of the overnight hours especially south philadelphia. as we look at double scan right now it is pretty colorful especially philadelphia down to the south. we have those bright reds especially in delaware southern new jersey near baltimore and washington some nasty storms down there. but as we lift north of the city on double scan live radar this welcomed rain because the light green is a very light rain where you're seeing some of these yellows a little bit of moderate rain but this is not enough to flood the area. this is easily absorbed into the grounds which is very dry at this point so this is very welcome rain and nothing severe or strong in southeastern pennsylvania right now. but as we head to the south this is where the atmosphere

is still very unstable. it's warm, it is very humid. the atmosphere has enough energy to still release some lightning strikes, close to 55 and this entire vantage point wilmington getting hammered with heavy rain and especially near glassboro 55, down to 49 and you can see especially just to the west of elmer the rainfall rates with some of these storms to the south are about 2-inches per an inch and a half hour per south of wilmington so a lot of watery leased in a very short amount of time leading to flooding especially in new castle county and parts of salem county so rainfall totals today alone this does not include what happened overnight last into the early morning hours just over an inch in philadelphia, over 2-inches in wilmington, allentown about a inch and three-quarters pottstown an inch and a half or so and atlantic city close to 1.28-inches of rain with one storm that passed through. so, a flash flood watch remains in effect for most of the delaware valley, all of southern new jersey and

delaware through 6 o'clock tomorrow morning meaning any downpour that passes through could see up to about 2-inches of rain an hour. a frontal boundary continues to push in from the north and right now you can clearly see it is between millville dover and arcing its way towards sea isle city. dover still 80 degrees. 60's in philadelphia. and very chilly to the north with lower humidity, trenton and allentown only in the upper 50's to 60's. so you can see to the south how the storms continue to fire up and they're moving in that northeasterly direction so it will be sometime before we completely clear the atmosphere. in fact, 10 o'clock tonight still showing downpours and thunderstorms especially along i-95 to the south and east. it starts to taper off after midnight but even lunchtime tomorrow to the south especially there could still be some showers and downpours around. and it's because of this front slowly moving off the coast as low pressure develops along it high pressure is trying to can come in from the north but really not strong enough so tomorrow is very cool, much lower humidity with periods of
