>> ♪♪ >> "action news." delaware valley's leading news program. with matt o'donnell, tamala edwards, karen rogers and meteorologist, david murphy. >> ♪♪ >> good morning everyone. it's 5 o'clock on this tuesday june 2nd and we are following several developing stories. >> several vehicles go up in flames in a south jersey neighborhood overnight sparking an arson investigation. >> and developing, there's a frantic search under way for hundreds of tourists who are on a capsizing cruise ship overseas. >> it is going to be a damp day an few showers could ling are out there. accuweather is tracking any remaining flood problems. >> let's turn to dave murphy and karen rogers for weather and track. good morning. >> we had so much rain yesterday that we do still have some lingering problems. the active rain is not really among those issues, though, as all we have is some light sprinkles and showers that are beginning to pop up toward philadelphia falling apart a little bit much south jersey which got most of our heaviest rain last night also seeing a couple of showers so still a little bit damp out there. for another hour until

6 o'clock this morning we have a flash flood watch that is continuing through the i-95 corridor and down through south jersey and most of the way through delaware. again, this is where most of our heavy rain fell and we still have some runoff from that rainfall last night that's still trying to drain out of some of our roadways and smaller creeks and streams. as you're driving around this morning and you encounter any of that flooded stuff turn around and go the other way. the flood advisories this morning are still up mainly in south jersey and the southern two-thirds of delaware. this is where our heaviest rain fell and it's in these counties where you have the most likelihood of running into some of those flooded streets. as we take a look to the west we're not done with the rain. looks like it will stay cloudy and much cooler today with a flow out of the northeast and at times there will be some spotty showers and scattered showers continuing to pop through. 54 your current temperature as you step outside in philadelphia, 51 in allentown 61 in sea isle city. humidity is lower so it's cooler and kind of refreshing out there. especially if you don't have a shower to deal with.

there are some showers around he though as you just saw. cloudy and cool otherwise and temperatures holding in the low 50's as we roll through the bus stop period this morning. and as we roll through the rest of the day it stays cooling, a high of 63 degrees by 3 o'clock. no more inundating rain today but spotty showers possible. >> we're trying dry out and that's what it look like in delaware county on the blue route at i-95 after the heavy rain yesterday morning the blue route was shut down for awhile. everything opened this morning looking good, no problems between i-95 and the schuylkill. some of our heaviest rain and the highest rainfall totals were in south jersey so not surprisingly that's where we have a lot of flooding still. this is franklin township gloucester county route 40 harding highway westbound near tuckahoe road, we have flooding out there. it's blocking the left lane. in chesilhurst in camden county flooding here as well on the route 30, that's the white horse pike westbound just as approach hendrix street watch for flooding blocking the right lane. you never want to drive through flooded areas. an accident where a vehicle slid into a pole here in marlton township.

this is 70 westbound between 73 and cropwell where we've got emergency crews on the scene. so, look for them as well, matt and tam. >> thank you, karen. developing this morning several cars burst into flames in camden county overnight and given that they happened around the corner from each other and minutes apart investigators are calling them suspicious. "action news" reporter katherine scott is live at one of those car fire scenes in pennsauken. katherine. >> reporter: matt, this investigation is certainly under way. no one was injured in all of this but three cars were damaged in overnight fires. one of the cars was in camden, two were in pennsauken. all are within a couple blocks of each other and you can see we're standing by one of them right now this mercedes on woodland. two of the cars have been towed but this one remained. it's parked here and you can see the flat tires right now, though it's dark out it's difficult to see the rest of the damage. the first fire was reported around 1:15 this morning over on the 3900 block of royal avenue in pennsauken township. the hood of the honda was up,

the windows had shattered shards of glass were in the street. police and the fire department were on the scene there. another fire was reported six minutes after that one about a block away on woodland avenue. after the flames were put out investigators were combing that car for evidence. not far from there over at garden and highland in camden word of a third fire came in and you could see ash and scorch marks on the roads pieces of cars still sat in the street after it was towed. there's no word if authorities believe these cars were targeted or if they were randomly attacked but these fires all incurred inside an hour. call police if you have any tips on who could be behind this. we are live in pennsauken, katherine scott, channel6 "action news." >> thank you, katherine. new this morning an out of control driver smashed into a pole and then took off. this happened on the 5700 block of harbison avenue in philadelphia's frankford section at 2:30 this morning. the crash brought down wires. police caught up with the driver and a passenger nearby. one lane is blocked on

harbison avenue near van kirk street while peco crews make repairs. it is almost 5:05 and also developing this morning it's a race against time for searchers trying to reach survivors who are inside a capsized cruise ship. this went down overnight in a storm on china's yang see river. thousands have died nd hundreds are missing. let's go to erin o'hearn with the new developments. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, tam. rescuers are scrambling to try to find survivors from that wreck. now, apparently some of those rescue teams did hear sounds coming from inside that capsized ship. right now they're trying to reach people they believe are inside the cabin. 12 survivors have been rescued so far and again five deaths have been confirmed. the ship, the eastern star went down around 9:30 monday night during a storm. the survivors include the captain and chief engineer who have both been taken into custody by police according to

china's state run news station t the rescue efforts were initially complicated by bad weather. it is believed that most of the 458 passengers on board are over the age of 50. there were also 47 crew members and five travel agency workers. again, five people have been confirmed to have lost their lives in that wreck. many more are still missing. rescue efforts are under way right now and of course this is a developing story. stay tuned to "action news" to find out more and of course you can always log onto 6abc.com. for now we're live in the sat center erin o'hearn channel6 "action news." back to you. >> thank you erin. officials have not identified the american tourist killed by a lion in south africa yesterday. the 24-year-old woman was visiting an animal park in johannesburg. visitors drive through the park as the lions roam freely. officials say the woman disobeyed signs to keep the windows on the car closed, she had it opened, she was taking a picture and that lion lunched and managed to get at her through the window. the driver tried to help and

suffered nonlife-threatening injuries. >> this is new on "action news." police in berks county released a picture of a motorcyclist wanted in a road rage investigation. police say the motorcyclist punched a 60-year-old woman in the mouth and threw her to the pavement. a witness snapped this picture. it happened shopping center on saturday night. the woman was treated at the hospital. the man was riding a twenty eight 2014 harley-davidson break out motorcycle. the jury has found the son of allentown's police chief not guilty of assault and reckless endangerment. christopher fitzgeral was accused of pointing a gun at undercover detectives during a road rage incident at the lehigh valley mall last august. his attorney said fitzgerald thought the men in the car were actually tailgating him and that he feared for his life. >> time now to turn to dave murphy. we've had a couple of days of a lot of rain. i'm beginning to wonder when does it clear up. >> the heavy rain is over i can tell you that. we still have lingering flooding issues and that's

always the case after a big heavy rain. it's scattered showers and sprinkles and most of this down to the south and west of philadelphia. it is more or less moving in the direction of the city but all of that bright shade of light, light green indicates very light precipitation. down west of dover, there's a little heavier stuff but it's really in the all that heavy and for the most part the biggest issue this morning is runoff from the rain from last night still flooding some roadways and some smaller flashy streams. we have a flash flood watch still in effect across the i-95 corridor and down through delaware and new jersey until 6 o'clock this morning. so, only about another hour of that. as we take a look outside, we have cloudy skies. feels kind of refreshing as you step outside because the humidity is down a little bit and the temperatures are kind of cool. assuming you don't have a shower to deal with this morning you're doing good. 54 degrees in philadelphia, 56 in wilmington, just 52 in allentown and 59 in sea isle city. did have a lot of rain yesterday, though, as tam mentioned in philadelphia, record rainfall, 1.96-inches

record in wilmington, 3.8-inches and down in. c a new record for yesterday's date 2.22-inches of rain and of course we're still waiting for some of the storm drains to take all of that rainwater away. after that flash flood watch expires at 6 o'clock you might find some clogged drains that just couldn't take the water and you want to slow down around that stuff. don't drive through the flooding and warm front out watch out for people runing into that and veering out into your lane. in terms of rainfall, doesn't look that bad. between now and noon light spotty sprinkles and showers. more until 6 o'clock. generally speaking it's cloudy and cool. by 11 o'clock there might be another batch of showers popping in. none of this stuff is going to exacerbate flooding. lehigh valley cloudy and damp a spotty shower today. 60 is the high so a big change not as humid and much cooler under the clouds today. at the shore 62, cloudy and damp, a spotty shower there as well. checking the exclusive accuweather 7-day forecast you

see today's high in philadelphia clocking in at 63 degrees under the clouds. tomorrow we may still be a little bit on the damp side, a high of 68 degrees. maybe some sunny breaks particularly later in the day. but we can't rule out a little spotty sprinkle or shower around and then thursday clouds to sun, back to 69 and nice in the afternoon and then starting friday in particular, you start to see a rise in temperatures and also the return of more noticeable humidity. friday 79, an afternoon shower or thunderstorm possible. for the weekend 80 saturday, 76 sunday. neither day is a washout but both days could feature a spotty pop-up thunderstorm or on sunday more like al shower. >> springy this seven-day forecast. >> it is. >> 5:10 now. next and new this morning fighting back. a flower shop owner from new york takes action when a man walks in with a gun. >> a senior prank goes too far out west. wait until you hear who left the key to a student's -- so students could pull off that messy stunt. karen. >> we're live at fort washington. still pretty damp on 309 approaching the pennsylvania

like right here. nothing threatening in lionville chester county. route 100 at 13. it's a little damp as you're headed out and that's about it traffic looking pretty good if you're coming in phoenixville or chester. not seeing any major problems. but if we look in new jersey that's one of the areas where we're still seeing flooding causing issues. this is where we got so much rain. franklin township route 40 harding highway westbound near tuckahoe road flooding blocks the left lane. in chesilhurst in camden county we have flooding blocking the right lane on the white horse pike westbound and in marlton still this accident where a vehicle slammed into a pole on 70 westbound near 73. as you go to your commuter traffic report you a looking at some of the areas that got so much rain. wilmington nearly 4-inches, record rainfall but i'm not seeing anyone reporting any problems. that was delaware. now i'm looking in south jersey. i think people aren't out and about traveling just yet but i would be careful about that and we're going to keep an eye on it because we expect you to encounter some of those flooded roadways. when you look at satellite6 and action radar you can see

that heavy rain that tore through yesterday. we're just left with light showers at this point so that's any other too much to drive through with it currently coming down. 54 degrees right now in philadelphia. but temperatures a significant change from yesterday 16 degrees cooler as you head out the door. a high today of just 63, tam. >> thank you karen. a brooklyn florist turned the tables on a would be robber. the suspect put a gun to his head on friday and demanded cash. the florist who served in the israeli army wrestled that gun away and held his attacker down. the their-year-old suspect is in custody. police say they're running tests to determine if the gun involved here was also used in other crimes. students say the principal and teachers at a las vegas nevada school were in on their senior prank. friday morning every door was barricaded by desks, glitter toilet paper and trash littered the hallways and classrooms. but not everybody thought prank was funny. some parents and students say the place was a mess and the prank was disrespectful to the janitors who had to clean it all up. >> the phillies host the reds

>> researchers say a famous red wood tree in california's mirror woods national park is only 777 years old. tree 76 the park's taste red wood was initially thought to be 1500 years old. the discovery came after researchers climbed it and took core samples. still the towering giants are babies compared to the old grove red woods further north the oldest of those is thought to be 2500 years old until somebody climbs one of those. >> that's right. >> and takes a sample. >> i got a chance to see those. they are fantastic specimens. >> gorgeous. big and beautiful. let's take a look right now in marlton. 70 westbound is blocked now at 73 and this is because of that

dakotas but most of our major travel destinations are okay. on the big board at the airport then all green aircraft this morning, no major delays. we do have some rain up the coast in newark and a little bit more up in boston this morning, tam. >> thank you david. going to health check for the last few years individual premiums under the affordable care act have been pretty stable but now some insurers are asking for major rate hikes in some states. we're talking 30 to 65 percent for next year. the insurers say they need to cover higher than expected costs and rising drug costs. this info is made public by the federal web site healthcare.gov. it's not clear if the companies will get their way. they think this may be an opening negotiating tactic. first of all the government has to approve any rate hike over 10 percent and state regulators could reject any new rates and it's not clear if in the end this would lead to bigger bills for consumers but experts argue these increases do not reflect rates in the broader market. it is currently illegal and many people think unethical to pay for organs

heavy rains we've had over the last couple of days. little sinkhole developed in hammonton atlantic county, new jersey. it's not all that large but of course big enough that could probably cause a problem for motorists so police have that area blocked off in hammonton new jersey. another power failure forced the washington monument to temporarily close. the national park service says the elevator lost power on sunday night. no one was on the elevator at the time. rangers did have to escort one visitors from the observation level to the ground by the stairs. technicians are trying to figure out what caused the outage. the power failure closed the monument on thursday and friday mornings last week. >> in the morning buzz we're talking about the best places in the world to go have a little fine dining. a lit came out. it was done big awards in london they say it's the oscar of the food world. for a long time spain has been sitting atop the list. that is the case again this year.
