gun and identifies himself. >> and then there was a gun battle. the perpetrator fired at least two shots at the detective and the detective returned fire. >> reporter: the detective shot shattered windows and hit the gunman who runs outside and dies. >> at least two shots were fired from the suspect at point blank range at the officer. the officer is extremely lucky that he was not shot. he's extremely lucky that he was not killed. >> reporter: this incidents for some at least reminiscent of last march when officer robert wilson was shot and killed when he was inside a game stop store and fought off robbers. >> he actually died in that. so it's -- i mean i guess when you're an officer you just have to be ready any second because you never know. >> reporter: the odd twist in this case police announce the robbers' gun loaded with blank cartridges something that was unknown at the time the detective was attacked. >> he did what he had to do and he was brave his actions were nothing short of brave. unfortunately somebody died

but he defended his life and the lives of others. >> reporter: so, the odd twist here is of course is the firearm was loaded with blanks but was then used aggressively against an armed police officer. why at this point nobody can say and frankly at this point rick no one we asked can recall anything quite like this in the past. live in lawndale, john rawlins, channel6 "action news." >> john thank you for that report. in other news mourners are gathering in delaware to say goodbye to beau biden. this is a live look from saint anthony of padua chump in wilmington. that's where the viewing is being held for the former state attorney general. the action cam was there as biden's casket was carried into the church earlier today. it had been in dover where biden was laid in honor yesterday. the viewing that's going on right now started at 1 o'clock and goes on for about another hour or so. there will also be a second viewing tonight from 6:00 to 9:00. chad pradelli is there and he'll have a live report later on "action news" at 5:00. there are no video cameras

like. >> touching and fitting. it will add beauty and hope to a place that's now associated with horror. >> reporter: family members affected by a tragic building collapse in center city two years ago are seeing the final design of a memorial to be built in their honor. nancy lost her daughter ann on that day. >> we, the families and friends of the victims miss them terribly but this memorial is about more than our own personal loss. philadelphia can and must do better. our mission is to make sure that no other family will ever suffer the terrible pain that we know. >> reporter: june 5th 2013, 6 people died when a building being demolished suddenly collapsed in the 2100 block of market street burying the neighboring salvation army thrift store in a pile of rubble. now three large granite panels reflecting a house will stand in the very place where people lost their lives. six windows representing the six who died are in the

memorial. each color was chosen by the victim's families. >> because he is the love and i like blue, i chose blue. >> this is from ann's favorite poem by robert frost called nature's first green. >> reporter: mayor michael nutter says the memorial will be a symbol of reflection. >> when they talk about the windows and kind of the concept of a window to your soul and i mean i think it's going to be quite breath taking and spectacular. >> reporter: and each family was given a replica of the colored glass to take with them. now, the project cost $1.3 million. half of that has been raised and today the mayor announced that the city is donating another 300,000 and they hope to have the memorial open by june of next year. eva. >> thanks, sharrie. from our delaware news room police are looking for the person who robbed a dollar store as it opened for business today.

it happened just after 8:00 a.m. at the dollar general on kirkwood highway in elsmere. police say someone armed with a handgun held up the store after employees started their day. state police and new castle county officers were looking for that suspect but he is still on the loose right now. they haven't said how much money he took. philadelphia police are also investigating a dollar store robbery this one in cobbs creek. take a look at this surveillance video of tuesday's crime from inside family dollar on the 5700 block of walnut street. a man walks up to the counter pry tending he was going to buy something but once the cashier opened the register he pulled a gun and jumped over the counter. the robber grabbed the cash but that wasn't it. police say he robbed a 70-year-old customer on his way out the door. then ran off. no one was hurt. >> wow. time for a check of the accuweather forecast friday afternoon. shall we check in with adam. >> oh, yeah. >> i think it looks pretty good out there too this afternoon. >> some good news out there.

>> it is feeling pretty good right now this afternoon with the returning sunshine as we look at the satellite imagery we did start off bloom mee this morning with drizzle and showers around between 10 o'clock and 12 clog but then going right up to speed at 4 o'clock, you can see the sunshine taking control across much of the area with the exception along the shore. the clouds still really trying to hold tough down there. as we look at the numbers it's cooler at the shore, 61 sea isle city and the boardwalk its a combination of the wind off the water and also because of that cloud cover, 73 in philadelphia. lehigh valley 75 and the poconos 80 degrees, they're the warmest because they were the first to see the sun return today. so if you're heading to the bank this evening for the phillies partly cloudy and milder 7:05 first pitch 72 degrees. by the ninth inning 67. this is a tease of sunshine because clouds increase overnight. we'll talk about a gloomy start to the weekend on saturday but that sun will return for most of the weekend. we'll have the timing of tomorrow coming up in that

because it is race weekend nascar race weekend up in the poconos this weekend so it's been bice see on northbound 476 and not helping us out on the pennsylvania turnpike eastbound approaching fort washington there's a crash taking out the two left lanes. that means speeds other eastbound turnpike are in the single digits right now. 8 miles per hour, 6 miles per hour, so that, too is contributing to that northbound 476 the blue route, delay. come couple accidents to avoid in upper dublin this afternoon. one is along 29ing road at civic hasn't, one along north hills avenue just cleared and we had a crash on the southbound side of 676 in camden close to morgan boulevard. it's in the process of clearing but you're seeing a little bit of southbound slowing headed towards the 42 freeway and 42 is extra heavy southbound off the walt whitman bridge down to 55 with people head down the shore. speaking of which big problems in tuckahoe this afternoon. route 50 is blocked both ways at route nine which is the way a lot of you use to get to the beach. maybe stay up on tuckahoe road into marmora or stay on 550

>> the sister of one of former house speaker dennis hastert is says her brother steve was the equipment manager when hastert coached his high school's wrestling team. after years after he graduated he told his sister he was game and his first same sex appearance was with hastert. >> he was a mentor, the man who was basically his friend who was the one that was abusing him. >> steve died in 1995, two weeks ago she says the fbi showed up at her door to ask about steve. they also told her hastert was about to be indicted on federal bank fraud charges related to money he allegedly paid someone to keep quiet about his prior misconduct. hastert has been in hiding since the allegations came out but he will be in court next week to face the charges. >> lawmakers are calling for an overhaul washington cyber security systems.

after hackers broke into several government computer networks. this time hackers got into the network at the federal office of personnel management. that's the agency that handles background checks for federal employees. the breach may have compromised the information of at least 4 million federal workers. experts say the attackers were based overseas. >> that's the initial read that it's coming from the chinese. the question is is it state sponsored, is it a private entity, are these just hackers. >> china has denied the accusations that it was behind the attack. this hacking comes after similar breaches at the irs the white house and the state department. the government is offering the affected workers free credit monitoring and identity theft insurance. >> u.s. employers added 280,000 jobs in may a big number after a mostly sluggish start to 2015. the labor department's monthly report also shows the unemployment rate rose to 5.5 percent, that's up a tenth

moved it up in the last half an hour from the low 60's to the mid 60's. 67 on the boardwalk. beach haven a little cooler at 59 degrees. satellite and radar, low pressure spinning up the coast but it's starting to push to the east. the cold front is approaching from the north and west near pittsburgh and buffalo. so temporarily we're starting to see a void in the cloud cover but late tonight after midnight the clouds will increase once again but we'll call it partly cloudy because it starts that way tonight and very comfortable, 58 in allentown, 57 in trenton, 61 in philadelphia and 58 in cape may. but saturday morning we start with the clouds once again across the entire area as that front pulls through. and also south of philadelphia mainly through delaware and southern new jersey early tomorrow afternoon or late morning, we could see some showers downpours or thunderstorms pop up. sunshine returning at that time in the lehigh valley and then by midafternoon the sun starts to return to philadelphia, atlantic city,

. >> eight of the 10 people charged with attacking international activist malala yousafzai were acquitted and not sent to jail as originally reported that's according to pakistani police and the countries public prosecutorly they say reports in april that the men were sentenced to life in prison were wrong they now say only two men went to jail. the others went free because of a lack of evidence. malala was shot in the head by the pakistani taliban when she was coming home from school. she was flown to a hospital in britain where she now lives with her family. >> it hasn't happened in 37 years but it could happen this

conversion van specifically equipped with a $22,000 wheelchair ramp. the vehicle was totaled tuesday on 195 in hamilton township when it collided with a tractor-trailer as the van was entering the interstate. >> we tried to pull off onto the shoulder but there was a truck already in the shoulder so there was nowhere for us to go and then the truck sideswiped us into that parked truck. >> reporter: 20-year-old madison of bordentown was strapped into the van in her wheelchair and had to be cut out of the mangled vehicle by first responders. neither she nor her boyfriend adam the driver were seriously injured. madison suffers from a genetic disorder that affects control of her muscles a junior at rider university majoring in theater and english she was on her way to an internship in new brunswick when the crash occurred. >> i think he had to know that he hit us. there was no way how can you not know. >> reporter: so far no one knows who the driver of that tractor-trailer was. new jersey state police are investigating and trying to

determine if the driver of the minivan failed to yield contributing to the accident. a loss of madison's conversion van has her parents scrambling to find rental public transportation or some other way of getting her around and her dad michael says it hasn't been easy but whoever is at fault he's grateful madison and her boyfriend survived this close call. >> i thought it was a little fender-bender. when my wife and i got there it was like oh, my god. >> reporter: well, it was much more than a and fender-bender. now the family is working with her insurance company to figure out exactly what's covered and if they can replace the van and they are also hoping to locate a rental van so that madison can get out once again. live in our new jersey news room, i'm nora muchanic, channel6 "action news." eva. >> thanks nora. the lehigh valley mother accused of killing her baby by tossing him over an allentown bridge is heading to trial. 19-year-old waived her preliminary hearing.

she walked her son to the hamilton bridge kissed him goodbye then pushed him over the edge. officers managed to rescue him but he died days later. perry also jumped over the bridge but survived. she's charged with homicide. >> nurses with the philadelphia school district spent the morning fighting for their jobs on the picket lines. they carried signs and handed outer fliers outside of the elementary school in germantown this morning. the group is protesting a proposal to hire contractors to replace them in city schools. the nurses argue that the move will put students at risk. >> we're looking for adam to come back in out of the sunshine this afternoon. >> they had to like pry me in with one of those hooks. it was beautiful out there. most of the weekend it is going to be like that outside with the sunshine. a little bump in the road tomorrow morning but that's about all. as we take a live look right now, one place that is saying, okay, enough i want to see the sun is the shore. still cloudy down there in cape may 67 degrees the air temperature. the winds out of the northeast

attacking a teenaged girl inside a target store in pittsburgh has been found guilty but men mally ill. surveillance video shows leon walls pulling then 16-year-old allison meadows from the checkout line before stabbing her repeatedly. the attack happened back in 2013. this morning a jury found walls guilty but mentally ill on charges including attempted homicide and aggravated assault. >> there is a sense of relief that this portion is one step behind us. >> now allison suffered a collapsed lung and other injuries. she's still on the road to recovery. but that hasn't stopped her from heading to college on an athletic scholarship. it wasn't a fire fight on the streets of chicago. two groups of teens were caught shooting roman candles at one another tuesday night. police originally thought the teenagers were members of a rival gang but witnesses say the so-called shootout was

for it, 295 right by 42. speeds just 5 miles per hour headed toward that broken down truck. closer to the shore still have the problems kind of between tuckahoe and seaville. an accident investigation blocking all lanes by route nine. near dino's seaville diner so if you're headed toward the shore, maybe stay up on tuckahoe road into marmora or stay on 550 as some alternates. heading the other direction, i don't know why you would want to but headed away from the shore 55 northbound has a crash near schooner landing road and of course in wilmington we still have all the closures today and through the afternoon tomorrow because of the beau biden funeral. bunch of streets, five of them blocked off through tomorrow afternoon for the funeral. we'll check it again rick and eva coming up at 5 o'clock. >> okay, thank you again. >> stepping outside sky 6hd taking a live look for us. >> meteorologist adam joseph will have the exclusive accuweather forecast and a look at that weekend a sunnier weekend when we come right back. stay with us.

and earliest that's why the temperatures warmer north and west. millville bouncing back to 70 degrees but again right along the shore, the combination of the clouds still lingering and that wind can coming in right off of that cold ocean we're only in the upper 50's to low 60's. low pressure that's been spinning to our south and east is finally starting to push away just a little bit allowing for us to rip the clouds apart inland. there is a front to the north and west. that front will slip through late tonight and during the morning hours tomorrow. partly cloudy overnight comfortable though, 58 in the suburbs, 61 for center city. future tracker as we get into the morning hours we'll quake up and you'll go okay, the june gloom is back and even through 1 o'clock there could be some downpours or thunderstorms firing up south of philadelphia from wilmington millville dover towards cape may county with sunshine returning to the north first in the early afternoon. by mid to late afternoon that sunshine will return pretty much all the way down to the shore and even as far south as dover, so it's going to take a
