8 o'clock tonight and that tornado watch extends into the central part of pennsylvania up from albany down through virginia. that is where the meat of this system is and where the atmosphere is ripe to produce tornadoes within these thunderstorms but again most of that energy as it pushes off to the east and it bumps into our region after sunset storms should weaken and fall apart as they push through but it doesn't mean we're out of the woods. there could be one or two renegade storms that turn severe this evening and overnight. right now it's very warm. we have southerly winds. 85 in philadelphia, wilmington 83. along the shore temperatures are in the 60's with the sea breeze. with the marine air that also will help stabilize the atmosphere as that air coming in off of the atlantic tends to choke storms as they push in. as we look at dewpoints they are coming back up. any time they're over 65 degrees, it feels humid out there and also that humidity

are talking to that man right now. >> reporter: that's right, brian. police some pretty astute police work led to a quick resolution of this case. they just walked the suspect into the police department moments ago. police say they've now got the car and they say they've got a confession from the man who was allegedly driving it. "action news" was there as 23-year-old zachary mcdonough turned himself in. he's currently making a videotaped confession admitting to everything. he told them he just panicked and didn't know what to do. police found his car behind his apartment house this morning. they say he stole a car cover from a relative yesterday and tried to conceal the damage to his car. police will be looking for a hyundai based on serial from us from car parts at the scene. the car they found today is a 2002 hyundai accent with heavy front end damage. police say he was behind the wheel when when he ran down

17-year-old kyle pzenny. the students body of pennsville high school wore blue today in support of kyle as he struggles to recover from what had been life-threatening injuries. friends of kyle's say he is showing some signs of improvement but it will be a long long time before he is out of the woods. in the meantime the police have just now charged the alleged driver that of car 23-year-old kyle mcdonough t-he's in the police station right now after giving a videotaped confession. police found it simply because a patrol officer out this morning spotted a car with a cover on it behind an apartment building, went to look and found indeed that was the car that police believe was involved in the accident. so this case wrapping up rather quickly here and we'll have more for you coming up on "action news" at 6:00. live in pennsville, david henry, channel6 "action news." erin. >> david, thanks so much for those new details. and from our delaware news room police are looking for the man they say raped a woman in dover. they gave us a picture of

42-year-old david pereira. they say he assaulted a 42-year-old woman in dover though they have not given us any other details about the incident. he's also facing charges for making terroristic threats. police are asking anyone who knows where he is to call them right away. a priest from west chester pleaded guilty to child pornography charges today. 56-year-old mark haines admitted he posed as a 16-year-old girl online, then convinced other girls to send him obscene pictures. he also pleaded guilty to distributing other images and videos including some that showed children being sexually assaulted. he faces a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years but could face up to life in prison when he's sentenced in september. school was out early today for students at ben franklin high school in the spring garden section of philadelphia. a fire forced everyone out of the building early this morning. now school officials are trying to figure out if they

can reopen by tomorrow. walter perez is live outside the high school with the details. hey, there, walter. >> reporter: the fire broke out a bit before 10 o'clock this morning. ben franklin high school was evacuated and no injuries have been reported but the question once again that lingers now is how did this fire start? we spoke with students from ben franklin high who say at first they thought it was a routine fire drill practice. >> the teacher was like it's a real fire drill and that was other stuff and we just walked out thing. >> we just go outside and then next we just saw the firemen were there and they say we have to go over there. >> reporter: all of this unfold around 9:45 this morning. >> first company arrived with smoke showing from the fourth floor. companies immediately went to service, found that there was a small fire located in room 402. >> reporter: we're told that room is the location for one of the school's science labs. the blaze was contained in that one room as firefighters

got the situation under control in about half an hour. investigators are now trying to figure out how the whole thing started. meanwhile officials from the school district are expressing gratitude that this situation did not escalate any further than it did. >> no injuries, great news. students have been relocated to the franklin learning center. we do not know yet what occurred in regards to what caused the fire. >> reporter: so, the decision to close the school was made at 11:30. students either went directly home or they were taken to the franklin learning center as you just heard until a parent or guardian came to pick them up but all the kids have been accounted for this afternoon and i just received official word that ben franklin high school will reopen tomorrow morning as scheduled. reporting live from spring garden, walter perez, channel6 "action news"." >> thanks walter. there's a hazmat investigation going on in south philadelphia after a fire and explosion at a paper factory. chopper six was over pier 34

on the 2100 block of south columbus boulevard. that's where the problem started right around 8 o'clock this morning. one person was treated for breathing and too much smoke during that fire but there are no reports at this hour that anyone was sickened by any hazardous materials. we have some new video damage an armed robber firing his gun inside a bank of america in plymouth meeting. he was already on his way out with stolen cash when he turned around and fired one shot toward the teller's window. in one owe one was hurt during the holdup but police and the fbi are still trying to find that suspect. he drove away from the bank in this black car and police think it is a honda accord. >> another pennsylvania state legislator has pleaded guilty to corruption charges as a part of a major sting operation. representative michelle brownlie admitted to violating the state's conflict of interest law. she'll resign her seat immediately but will likely be allowed to keep her pension.

brownlie pleaded guilty to accepting $2,000 from an undercover officer. she's the fourth politician to plead guilty in the investigation. all of them are philadelphia democrats. governor tom wolf has charged his mind on the man he wants to lead the pennsylvania state police. today wolf asked the senate to return his nomination of marcus brown. the gop says it will not honor that request s if wolf plans to resubmit brown's nomination later. brown has faced criticism because he never attended the state police academy. brown will stay on as acting commissioner. >> an oil truck inbound ended up on that's roof. chopper six was over the scene in mount laurel where the truck overturned before 10 o'clock this morning. it's still unclear how the truck ended up upside down but the good news is that no one was hurt. a northeast philadelphia road was shut down today after an accident involving that trash truck. chopper six was over the

11,000 block of knight road where the truck knocked a power pole down right across the road. police had to shut the road down while crews made repairs. no one was hurt in this crash either and there were no widespread reports of any power problems. >> now it almost seems like monday is a little more difficult to get home, doesn't it. >> yeah. just a little sluggish these days. that's all right. let's go right to autumn marisa in for matt pelman. is it actually as bad. >> yes, it is, brian and erin. we're watching incident after incident pop up in our camera. this is on the schuylkill expressway. here we are eastbound right past girard avenue. you can see they're taking out the left lane here. we just had an accident clear on the westbound lanes on the schuylkill right at university, one right at south street. you sort of get the gist of what's happening on this monday afternoon. speeds across the region nice and slow, 12 miles per hour on the schuylkill expressway, 9 miles per hour on 95 right now, 24 on the blue route. so again a very slow going

police are obviously investigating how that happened. we'll keep you updated throughout the newscast. looks like a pretty serious accident there. >> in the meantime investigators in upstate new york say it now appears that two killers who broke out of maximum security pries ton might have had help on the inside. hundreds of officers fanned out across the region trying to hunt down 34-year-old david sweat and 48-year-old richard matt. the pair was last seen in their neighboring cells at 10:30 friday night but they were gone by 5:30 saturday morning. police say they used power tools to drill through steel walls and pipes and surfaced on the outside about one block from that prison. >> almost impossible to think that this was done without help from someone both inside and in particular outside the prison. >> there is now a $100,000 reward leading to the capture of those two escaped convicts. >> a texas police officer who

shoved a 14-year-old girl to the ground is now on administrative leave. cell phone video captured the incident in mckinney outside dallas. the officer pushed the girl who was wearing only a bathing suit and he later pointed his gun at other teenagers. investigators say police were responding to a disturbance at a pool party after the teens began using a pool without permission. some were fighting and refusing to leave. but the girl shoved by the officers is insisting she did nothing wrong. >> he thought we were saying rude stuff to him he grabbed me and he like twisted my arm on the back of my back. and he shoved me in the grass. he started pulling the back of my braids and i was like telling him that he can get off me 'cause my back was hurting really bad. >> that officer seen there is on leave pending the outcome of the investigation. >> a former south carolina police officer has now been indicted in a deadly shooting that was caught on camera.

officer michael slager fired eight times into the back of 50-year-old walter scott as he ran from a traffic stop in april. state police had already charged slager with murder but today a grand jury affirmed that decision. the 33-year-old faces between 30 years and life in prison if convicted. convicted killer oscar pistorius could be released from prison this summer. a parole board is set to recommend the former olympian be released to house arrest in august. if that happens, pistorius would be out of jail just 10 months after he was found guilty of killing his girlfriend reeva steenkamp. pistorius has admitted firing the shot that killed her but he says he thought she was an intruder. >> dunkin' donuts is about to start delivering and it's all part of a move to keep up with its require value. the ceo says the company is conducting a private test of delivery service but he says the company will likely move forward with mobile ordering

was plagued with problems. organizers say the city did not use the right space for that large event. there were complaints about noise and crowd control. instead of an l.a. festival there will be a free concert in new york but the made in america festival itself will only be right here in philadelphia this labor day. >> philadelphia should be proud. we do such a great job putting on such a large performance and concert. >> they do big events well here. >> time for accuweather. >> let's go over to adam joseph. adam tracking severe weather moving in adam. >> we're rocking and rolling in central park central parts of pennsylvania. we are watching this line and as it's progressing to the east it is issuing some warnings in central and some eastern parts of pennsylvania. right now there is a tornado warning in effect for schuylkill county which is just to the north and west of berks county with these storms that you can see now approaching harrisburg and it will be a couple more hours before these storms approach to the south and east.

however, as those storms are approaching, the national weather service has just posted a tornado watch now for lancaster county, berks county that includes all of reading and the surrounding locations of berks county, the lehigh valley including reading, northampton county and up into the poconos. this until 10 o'clock tonight an tornado watch means the possibility is there for storms to turn severe and then if they do turn severe, there's enough rotating winds in the atmosphere today for them to possibly produce tornadoes. doesn't mean it's a definite but we're watching it here this evening in those far northwestern suburbs. as we look live from sky six from the temple university camera, the ben franklin bridge, it is hazy, turning more humid, it is very warm and very breezy as well. it is 85 in the city of philadelphia, 83 in wilmington, 85 in allentown. it's the areas north and west that we'll watch for these storms as they progress in. because of that strong wind coming off the ocean out of the south with that cooler air coming in off the atlantic,

that will help weaken the storms as they approach philadelphia and push to the south and east. in fact, those winds right now at 32 miles an hour gusting in wildwood, 30 miles an hour in atlantic city, so a very windy day at the shore. inland you're noticing the trees swaying quite a bit with those wind gusts in excess of 20 miles an hour. here's future tracker at 7 o'clock. we are still waiting for that line to approach reading and allentown. a couple of hours from now. then it starts to close in and as you can see it breaks apart as it pushes towards philadelphia. that is at 11 o'clock and still some storms to the north and west but as we get into the overnight hours although the severe level of these storms will dwindle overnight we will still see downpours and thunderstorms popping. this is 2 o'clock in the morning. they could have torrential rain with them, some gusty winds. even at 7 o'clock tomorrow morning some leftover downpours and thunderstorms. so for tonight we'll be watching those gusty storms passing through. some could hit severe levels especially west of philadelphia, warm and muggy. overnight lows in the upper 60's to near 70 degrees.

meteorologist adam joseph for the latest. you're busy today adam. >> yeah, erin and brian we're watching storms far to the north and west. they are still at this point north and west of harrisburg so it's going to be a few more hours because they're moving to the north and east not directly east so it's taking a little extra time for them to push into the viewing area but nonetheless, we have a tornado watch in effect until 10 o'clock tonight for lancaster county reading berks county, lehigh county as well as northampton county up into the poconos. a watch meaning as these storms push in the atmosphere is conducive to some kind of rotation so there's the possibility that these storms could turn tornadic in those counties. in the last 15 minutes from this vantage point the storms stretch from the tennessee valley to northern new england. we're looking at a good 400 or so lightning strikes in the last 15 minutes and the most severe part of the line right now is in central parts of pennsylvania as it is pushing slowly to the north and to the

east. so here's what the threats are with these storms as they approach. lightning and downpours are the highest threat. the strong winds large hail and an ice layed possible tornado in those far northwestern counties is a moderate risk so again the downpours and lightning will take the cake as these push -- these storms pass through. right now it is warm, it is muggy everywhere. it's 85 in philadelphia as well as allentown, 83 in wilmington. to the south temperatures are cooler with the wind coming off the ocean. with the winds coming off the ocean as the storms pass philadelphia they should weaken because of that marine air that will help stabilize the atmosphere. when i come back we'll talk about future tracker time those storms and also give you that seven-day forecast for the rest of the week. >> we know you're watching it closely. thanks so much adam. remember you can counter on 6abc.com/weather when severe weather strikes. live storm tracker six radar is there along with any weather watches and warnings for your area. >> now to the late he have on the death of a 17-year-old

bicyclist that teenager was struck and killed last night at philadelphia's hunting park section. his friends family and classmates are devastated. "action news" reporter vernon odom live outside olney high school where the victim was a student and vern you've got more on the investigation and on the driver here. >> reporter: hell, low brian. tonight philadelphia police are holding off on a possible arrest or any other action so far, charges being filed, for example, against a motorist who last night in hunting park lit and killed a student here at olney high. there has been a paul over the high school today. one of their long time students was killed by a suspected drunk driver in hunting park last night. 17-year-old was on his bicycle hadn't his way home around 7:00 when witnesses told police the driver of this white honda ran a stop side at high speed near seventh and

cayuga killing the popular young man who was finishing up his 11th grade year at olney high. >> he was real cool people. he was humble. stick himself helped people out. real cool. >> reporter: police say the 28-year-old driver of the car did not leave the scene. police have not arrested him pending the outcome of toxicology testing. the school brought in grief counselors to help students and faculty deal with the sudden death of adiery matos. >> most of the people were sad and quiet. it was just a quiet day. there was hardly any talking. it was just sad. >> reporter: again police tonight waiting for the results of blood tests before deciding whether or not to arrest that driver for dui or homicide by vehicle. live in olney vernon odom, channel6 "action news." >> okay, vern, thanks so much for that report. officials say a chester county man already behind bars for allegedly robbing seven delaware banks has been linked to even more holdups in

montgomery county. this is 44-year-old joseph milcocki. he has been arraigned. this is on top of the seven bank robbery charges he's already facing in delaware. all 12 happened between 2009 and 2012. he has been linked to the robberies by dna from a fake mustache that fell off during one of the holdups. from our delaware news room police are investigating a possible hate crime in claymont. it happened here along denim avenue. someone painted a racial slur and a swastika on the side of a woman's car outside her home. she discovered the graffiti yesterday morning after she parked the vehicle overnight. anyone with information should contact new castle county police. >> two days after he laid his son to rest, vice president joe biden is sharing a public message about his very private loss. in a tweet poster on behalf of his family this afternoon

biden said "our deepest gratitude for everyone's kindness and compassion. your love and admiration for beau has touched us beyond measure. "beau biden who served two terms as delaware's attorney general lost his battle with brain cancer last month. he was just 46 years old. philadelphia bars and restaurants could be forced to install more surveillance cameras under a proposal sparked by the death of shane montgomery. the 21-year-old disappeared after he left a manayunk pub in november. police couldn't find his body until january. his parents think a camera outside the bar could have shortened that painfully long search. today a city council committee heard testimony on that very idea. the bill would require at least one camera outside the exit to any business with a liquor license. >> a dangerous fire that raged for hours at a central pennsylvania chemical planter is finally under control. this is the scene at miller chemical and fertilizer in hanover adams county just

after 3:30 this morning. tower flames engulfed the warehouse as thick plumes of smoke billowed through the sky. even though those fumes were not considered toxic. nearby residents were asked to shelter-in-place as a precaution. fire officials say if the wind had shifted homes would have been evacuated. fortunately the blaze burned itself out before then. authorities say they will that continue to monitor the air quality as investigators search for a cause. police believe the driver of a tractor-trailer was trying to make a turn when he ran into a minivan on the roosevelt boulevard this morning. chopper six was over the scene near adams avenue in philadelphia's somerdale section. that's where the van got wedged underneath a semi truck around 11:00 a.m. though the accident tied up traffic for some time, fortunately no one was seriously hurt. >> police in burlington city are trying an old method for a new way to combat crime. "action news" anchor rick williams live to tell us more on this.

>> ♪♪ >> meteorologist adam joseph joining us. saw you back there crunching the latest data. looking like severe weather coming fast. >> yeah. >> second monday in a row. last monday we had a tornado warning at this time. now we're watching this line approach from the north and west. it's coming in very slowly. plenty of time to watch this as it closes in. as we look at double scan live radar all is quiet in the delaware valley, the lehigh valley at this moment and again it's going to be at

least another one to two hours before they start to really close into those northwestern suburbs. as we're looking right now here, it's fleetwood kutztown. this is berks county and then you bump over into schuylkill county and also near pottsville we've got this nasty storm moving to the east at about 30 miles an hour. this originally did prompt a tornado warning for schuylkill county and also dauphin county about a half hour ago. no longer a tornado threat with this storm but as it's pushing to the east we have about 1 inch size hail close to ping-pong sized hail stones just to the south and west of pottsville and as it slowly works to the east we're watching near hamburg and kutztown and if it holds together that won't be for maybe another 45 minutes to an hour. as we look at a tornado watch it is in effect for lancaster county, berks county, lehigh county, northampton county, up into carbon and monroe counties near the poconos. this just means the possibility that the storms could turn tornadic as they

push in, even though the delaware valley right now not within a tornado watch. you're right on the edge and it's something we have to follow and continue to unfold as those storms pass in in the next few hours. it is warm and muggy though, along i-95. 84 trenton, 83 in wilmington. cooler at the shore. that's throwing in a very stable wind that helps to stabilize the atmosphere in southern new jersey and it's a whole lot cooler only in the upper 60's. as we look at satellite and radar new york state central pennsylvania, parts of west virginia virginia, maryland under these tornado watches as this front continues to slowly work in from the west to the east. this is a very latest update with future tracker at 7:30 showing some of the storms approaching chester county, berks county, the lehigh valley and then finally near philadelphia around 11 o'clock tonight including montgomery county, bucks county and also delaware county. still really not much going on in southern new jersey and delaware even through 11 o'clock tonight so you're pretty much dry here this evening and then at 2 o'clock

that's when it starts to push in but notice you're losing the bright colors on future tracker as those storms hit that stable air and somewhat fall apart in southern new jersey and delaware and even early tomorrow morning we're still seeing downpours an few thunderstorms around and a few scattered tomorrow afternoon at 3 o'clock, so it's going to be another 24 hours before we really can settle down the atmosphere around us. so in those far northwestern suburbs especially under the tornado watches, any of the storms could contain damaging winds, hail and an isolated tornado. but for philadelphia wilmington, trenton south and east it's torrential downpours and strong winds between 40 and 50 miles an hour that we're watching overnight tonight. the exclusive accuweather 7-day forecast still unsettled at times on tuesday. doesn't look all that severe tomorrow but we'll watch some of those pop-up at 86 degrees. much less humid drier on wednesday with sun and clouds of 86 but then the heat and humidity quickly return here on thursday, 92, same for

favorable for a potential tornado to develop. you don't have to take any action. that would be if a tornado warning has been posted. as we go wider you can see what's going on. this is what's known as a prefunnel trough. it's ahead of a cold front. the actual cold front is across the midwest but this is a pretty potent line of storms and that if you look at its moving it is not racing to the easter. this system is moving slowly so it will gradually enter our viewing area as we head through the evening hours. future tracker showing by about 11 o'clock, this is when that line will be closing in on the i-95 corridor. once it moves into south jersey and delaware, it will be moving into much cooler air so it will evaporate but the actual front will be lingering into tomorrow morning so that means we could have some stormy weather right in time for your morning commute. so, this is going to be a long duration event. so what to expect tonight. the strongest storms in our far northwest suburbs. it will be slowly crossing our region with gusty winds heavy rain lightning, maybe even
