>> ♪♪ >> "action news." delaware valley's leading news program. with matt o'donnell, tamala edwards, karen rogers and meteorologist, david murphy. >> ♪♪ >> good morning. here's what's happening here on this tuesday, june 9th. a massive fire has destroyed more than a dozen homes nearly 60 people no longer have a roof over their heads. we are live with the latest. >> a community demands a texas officer to be fired for his actions at a pool party while others come to his defense. >> and a delaware county teen is being hailed a hero after this quick thinking saved another man's life. >> good morning everyone, it's 4:30 on this tuesday. let's see what those storms are doing. not much right now i would imagine. david and karen have the latest. >> looks like the worst was last evening.

actually have a tornado watch across much of the region. no tornadoes only a funnel cloud way up to the north and west away from our immediate area. this morning still showers down in cape may. another little cluster of slightly steadier showers month pushing through southern cape may or new castle county i should say and kind of pushing up towards the northeast so that these could come into salem con county and eventually gloucester and camden county if they maintain their current strength. the lightning total nothing as we do not have any leftover thunderstorms this morning, at least not right now. you see the watch boxes we had last night most to the north and west of philadelphia, some scattered damage in here from straight line winds but no tornadoes. this morning i have a little bit of precipitation, some clouds behind it. still kind of muggy out there. and later today another pop-up thunderstorm is possible. 70 degrees and dry in most neighborhoods this morning. including in philadelphia and wilmington. 67 degrees in trenton, skater now in town, 68 in millville and down in here where we may see showers this morning. heading out to catch the school bus dry in most neighborhoods but still muggy

under partly sunny skies. 70 degrees by 6 o'clock and 71 by 8:00 a.m. as we roll through the day it's going to be another warm one, 81 degrees by noon, by 3 o'clock 86 degrees. that will be your high today and then 82 by 6 o'clock. during the afternoon and into the early evening there is the chance of a couple of pop-up thunderstorms and we'll talk about what problems we may get from those storms when i come back with the full forecast. uh-oh, karen, what's going on. >> yeah, we have flashing lights. an accident on the schuylkill expressway. this is westbound traffic at south street. we can see the flares. i was driving by this accident earlier. it's been out here a little bit blocking the right lane and the shoulder. police are on the scene at this point a-tow truck has arrived. hopefully they'll be able to clear it out. it was blocking all lanes at one point. not happening right now and not causing a delay as we have light volume. you have at least the right lane blocked currently. watch for that one schuylkill westbound at south street. that's our only accident on your majors at this point but we have a problem in abington montgomery county. i want to take you there because it's a fire location

here. easton road at hamilton so watch for easton at hamilton. an overnight fire location but we've got crews on the scene partially blocking traffic in this area. they've set up a local detour to help you get around that a little smoothly but you might want to avoid the area if you can. westbound on the atlantic city expressway right at the williamstown exit we've got the left lane blocked here. police are on the scene. an accident, an investigation out here blocking the left lane. we really are not seeing delays. overall speeds of about 65 miles an hour so moving okay at this early hour but. >> thank you karen. >> dozens of people are out of their homes this morning as firefighters sift through the ash and rubble from a multi alarm fire in mercer county new jersey. 20 homes are damaged. "action news" reporter katherine scott is live in hamilton township with what is happening this morning. katherine. >> reporter: matt, this is a devastating fire. 60 people are out of their homes now. it's dark but you can still see some of the damage that remains after this massive

fire here yesterday. you can see debris on the sidewalk on all of the charred out windows and the damage on the roof. the fire spread quickly through the roof yesterday. this fire broke out around 4:45 yesterday afternoon on the 1700 block of east state street in hamilton township. 175 firefighters, some from as far as burlington and hunterdon counties were called in to help battle these fast moving flames. investigators believe the fire began in the area of the roof and then spread quickly. there were roofers doing some work prior to the fire but investigators say the cause remains under investigation. some neighbors here have lost everything. they said the flames just moved so quickly. >> i went outside and the roof was -- like it was in flames and it just spread to my house so f it starter like four doors down. >> reporter: and of course the flames kept moving. again, 20 homes damaged here,

15 homes heavily damaged in this fire yesterday afternoon. 60 people remain out of their homes. the cause of this fire remains under investigation. we're live in hamilton township, katherine scott channel6 "action news." >> okay, katherine thank you. and new this morning police will be stationed at a burlington county middle school for the start of classes this morning. this is all because of a threat made against harrington middle school in mount laurel. investigators are on the scene overnight investigating and searching the school. police will screen everyone who comes into that building today. the district has asked students and staff bring fewer items into the building so they can speed up that process. the mount laurel school district said a number of similar threats were made to schools across the state. philadelphia police are on the hunt for the gunman who shot a a 75-year-old man in the back of the head. the shooting happened last night in the 400 block of east indiana avenue in west kensington. the victim had surgery. he is expected to survive. detectives are trying to figure out if the senior

citizen was the shooter's intended target. police in pennsville, new jersey, say the suspect in a hit and run that critically injured a teenager has confessed. 23-year-old zachary mcdonough surrendered to police just hours after officers said they found his heavily damaged car hidden under a car cover. mcdonough is accused of hitting 17-year-old kyle pszenny early sunday morning near hook road and lee avenue. friends say pszenny has had brain surgery is that showing positive signs. students will gather for a vigil at pennsville high school football stadium tonight. >> the dallas police officer seen here slamming this 15-year-old girl to the ground has been put on leave pending a investigation. the disturbance which happened during a pool party has been viewed millions of times. hundreds of demonstrators rallied outside a school in mckinney texas to protest the white officer. some held signs that said black lives matter and my skin

color is not a crime. a small group also rallied offering support for the police officer who is now suspended. the weekend's event was captured by this teen who was a guest at the party. >> i was one of the only whiter people in the area when it was,, when that was happening and you can see in part of the video where he tells us to sit down and he kind of like skips over me and tells all my african-american friends to go sit down. >> some of these protesters want the officer outride fired. what ignited the fire is still under debate. some say some un59 itd teens hopped the fence to join the party and some say the police overreacted. >> federal health officials are reach to their hundreds of people who may have come in contact with a woman diagnosed with an extreme form of tuberculosis. officials say the woman flew to chicago from india back in april. she apparently spent time in two other states as well.

that woman is currently in isis laying. she's being treated for what's known as extensively drug resistant tb a rare but dangerous form of the disease. "gma" will continue our coverage on both of these national news stories. that's coming up at 7:00 a.m. right after "action news." a former penn state student james vivenzio of virginia has filed suit against the school. he claims the university ignored his complaints about sexual assault hazing and drug use at a examine pus fraternity. kappa delta rho has been suspends for three years and 38 of its members expelled by the national organization. penn state denies the claim saying neither the manor his family were willing to file a complaint. >> methods for a new way to combat crime. officers are leaving door hangers. [inaudible] >> about crime in their area and asking them to call if they have information.

burlington police also use more modern tools like facebook and twitter to alert the community. >> if you don't have social media we really need to get back to traditional ways to make sure that the neighborhood is aware. >> it's the old fashioned way of community policing, foot patrol, high presence. >> share information with officers walking the streets and leaving door hangers behind. new this morning a delaware man is charged with his seventh dui offense. 51-year-old phillippe koring was involved in a car crash. no one was hurt but troopers at the scene smelled alcohol on the man and he was charged with his seventh offense of driving under the influence of alcohol. troopers say he had dui convictions from 1987 through 2008. >> this story is new. a delaware county teen is credited with saving the life of an umpire who collapsed during a baseball game. 16-year-old mikeki.

he was on second base when the umpire went into cardiac arrest. he started cpr. the umpire is now recovering at a hospital thanks to that teen's heroic actions. >> all new stories you didn't see last night. a dangerous trend that's been around for years has put a utah teen in the hospital. now her father has a strong message nor anybody thinking about getting in on the trend. >> police are searching for a plan on a college cam puts who has an unusual fetish. david. >> another warm one, humid to start out, too. shorts and t's all the way. there is the chance of a spotty thunderstorm. i'm not going overboard on rain gear though because these are pretty spotty today. nonetheless they could pose a threat in some neighborhoods. we'll talk about that coming up with the exclusive accuweather 7-day. >> ♪♪

>> 4:43. some storms overnight but they're kind of clearing out right. >> they are, yes. storm tracker six live double scan shows we have a little bit of precipitation left over south of philadelphia. this is on the move toward the northeast. looks like it will hinder some folks in parts of south jersey during the morning. you see some of that pushing in on cape may county. that's pretty light stuff and then a slightly heavier cell in yellow and even. no miles an hour today delaware pushing across the top of the delaware bay into

salem county and that may actually make its way into glassboro towards camden county later on this morning. as we take a look outside we have cloudy skies over philadelphia. could see some breaks as we roll through the morning and over all we are looking at a clouds and sun mix today with more spotty storms later. 70 degrees. it is muggy as you step outside. i could feel that in the car on the way n i didn't bother putting the air conditioning on. by the time i got to work you a like maybe that was a bad idea. winds out of the south-southwest at 7 miles an hour. we had a tornado watch across the region for awhile last evening. severe thunderstorm warnings in a couple spots but most of the damage as expected was well to the north and west of philadelphia. in topton berks county a-65 miles per hour gust reported, 60 miles per hour in mertz town. skippack saw thunderstorms

bringing penny sized hail. in schuylkill county a funnel cloud which is outside of our region. looking ahead toward today future tracker six shows you mainly dry conditions this morning, a little something down in south jersey. as we go up to the noon hour there's the possibility of the redevelopment of showers and perhaps thunderstorms and then we get later into the day and there may still be a little bit of a lingering storm around but most of this is done late this afternoon and then into the evening we're actually going the dry out with the humidity dropping a bit. tonight's threats or today's really for many spotty storms, lightning and downpours would be the main issue. a slight chance of strong winds. no hail or tornadoes as we look across the area today. for temperatures 71 degrees by 8 o'clock by 11 o'clock, 78 and by 2 o'clock, 85 with a high of 86 around 3 o'clock. it will probably still feel somewhat humid in through here and of course we have a chance of spotty storms around. 5 o'clock 83 degrees, maybe a storm but around 5 o'clock we'll start to see that front push through and we'll start

to feel that humidity go down the high temperatures very warm across the region today. 83 in allentown even down the shore up close to 80 for a high. your exclusive accuweather 7-day forecast, today we get to 86, it's humid most of the day with things improving later on in the afternoon and evening. then tomorrow partly sunny and for one day we have lower humidity and nicer conditions with a high of 86. but on thursday you're going the feel that humidity build back in. we'll get up to a hot high of 92 and then on friday hot and humid, 90 degrees the high. a slight chance of a thunderstorm thursday. probably a little better chance on friday. for the weekend still looking like we're back in the 80's and again a spotty shower or thunderstorm possible over the weekend. >> thanks, david. a utah father is speak outer against the dangerous trend of car surfing. kevin kenner's daughter sidney was seriously injured after trying the stunt. 13-year-old rode on the outside of a vehicle while a friend drove. she fell off and suffered severe trauma to the head. doctors put intera medically induced coma.

>> to even think about this type of activity, the torture and the pain that we went through for two weeks in the hospital, all you kids, it's just -- it's not funny from the teen survived but will spend months in rehab. federal health officials say there were 99 reports of car surfing between 1990 and 2008, any other many but more than half of those were deadly. a foot kisser is on the loose on a california college campus. police in california state polytechnic university in pomona say a man in his early 20's approached a female student in front of the men's gym and asked if he could take photos of her bare feet then proceeded to kiss and lick her toes while recording it on his smartphone. then he ran off. >> very odd. we're here at the big board keeping a first look at business. now the new jersey economic development authority will vote today at issue the $164 million in tax breaks and that could be really good how that many vote turns out for the american water works

company. but they'd have to move some jobs. the voorhees company has five offices and 600 employees across south jersey but to get the tax break they would have to move at least 250 of those jobs to camden. the government is calling on auto workers to make crash avoidance systems standard when they make a new car. these systems automatically put on the brakes or warn drivers and the ntsb say these systems could prevent hundreds of deaths and about 400,000 injuries every year. and concerns over over inrates led to declines on markets. looks like futures are looking up for today. new jersey businessman robert carr is donating a million dollars to fund 50 scholarships for high school students to attend rowan university. the donation was made through the give something back foundation and the money will go to cover tuition room and board. he really is giving something back. >> indeed. 4:48. more stories you didn't see last night a toddler down south was rescued from a

on this accident scene on the schuylkill expressway. we still see the flashing lights. this is westbound traffic at south street. an accident involving a dump truck blocking the right lane and the shoulder. we can see the flares set up. just a little bit more volume there than there was maybe 20 minutes ago so people kind of slowing down as you pass this accident scene. at least traffic is getting by. at one point it was blocking all lanes. schuylkill westbound slow at south street as we see traffic having to be forced off a little bit to the left. not that far off we have a fire location here in southwest philadelphia and beaumont avenue is blocked between 56th and 57th. if you're in this area stick to florence avenue to avoid the problem there. and also right now a live look at i-95. we're looking pretty good. that's your southbound traffic headed towards cottman. we had those storms overnight and still a couple of showers left to areas in our south. looking good on i-95. jersey overview showing no problems just yet. they'll cup up a little later tam. >> thank you karen. a day care driver accused

of leaving a two-year-old locked in a van for hours. jeremy smith junior was taken into an ambulance. feet away daily sat handcuffed in the back avenue cop cruiser. when the toddler was not dropped off at home his grandmother went to school looking for him and she found him locked in that van asleep and soaking wet. little jeremy drank water and cooled off before heading to the hospital to be checked out. >> happening today, former house speaker dennis hastert is scheduled to be arraigned in federal court in chicago. hastert is accused of violating banking laws by agreeing to pay hush money to keep a former male student quiet about past sexual misconduct. abc news is reporting he's expected to plead not guilty. if convicted the rainy could face a maximum five year sentence an $250,000 fine on each charge. >> it is 4:53. still ahead in the next half hour of "action news" police could be uncovering new clues inin the escape from a prison.
