>> ♪♪ >> "action news." delaware valley's leading news program. with matt o'donnell, tamala edwards, karen rogers and meteorologist, david murphy. >> ♪♪ >> good morning everyone. it's 6 o'clock on this tuesday,one 99th and we have news you didn't see last night. >> an armed man holds up a local convenience store making offer way pile of cash. >> picking up the pieces. an entire block of homes in mercer county lies in ruins this morning. we have a live report from the scene of a six alarm fire. >> and don't put away the umbrellas just yet. accuweather is tracking unsettled and potentially stormy weather. >> let's go to dave murphy for weather and karen rogers for traffic. >> a couple of showers around this morning in south jersey for the most part. take a look as you can see them creeping along the coast in cape may, atlantic county, some of those starting to go off the coast near atlantic city and there are a couple of other showers. some have been catching a

bitter of south philadelphia. it now looks like they're mainly moving up towards burlington county. little bit more out west of gettysburg will miss the area. as we take a look at what went on last night we did get some strong thunderstorms especially in the northern and western suburbs. no tornadoes even though there was a tornado watch. and now today we're looking at clouds giving way to some occasional sun and the redevelopment of some additional pop-up thunderstorms in the afternoon. 71 degrees currently in philadelphia. muggy. still humid. 69 degrees in allentown. 68 in trenton. and a muggy 70 in wilmington. as we head out the door to catch that school bus between now and 8 o'clock it does look like it's still going to be on the muggy side. partly to mostly cloudy skies 70 by 6 o'clock and 71 degrees by 8 o'clock. on your storm tracker six app 71 right now. as we roll into the afternoon it does look like it's going to be warm again. 81 by noon and a high of 86 around 3 o'clock. and anywhere after maybe late morning hours in through lunchtime and in through the about midafternoon hours there is the chance of another pop-up thunderstorm. where they hit they'll produce

drenching downpours and perhaps gusty winds. not everybody sees them today but you do want to take cover if you hear thunder. karen rogers, what are roads looking like? >> in a lot of the area the roads are drying out after those storms dave. and some of the showers that moved through this morning. like i-95. so, the weather not impacting i-95 but this is your southbound traffic. we're starting to see that extra volume kind of kick in from allegheny to girard. not a major delay just yet but he see the beginning of it certainly on i-95. on the big picture we've had a few problems this morning. in southwest philadelphia we had a fire location on beaumont avenue. that has since cleared. things are looking betterment in lower merion we had a downed tree from the storms that was causing a problem on ass ashbridge and that road reopened. things looking better there. more details about this accident on the boulevard. it turns out that a car hit a tree so that's causing a problem on the boulevard southbound at levick street. so you might want to stick to the inner drive. the accident itself and that downed tree in the outer drive. also an accident in mount airy coming in to us just now. so watch for it on lincoln drive at rittenhouse street. we're also getting word of

i-78 eastbound an accident involving a tractor-trailer went down an em bang bank. they've shut it down at the lynn hearts field exit. more details on that one coming up. tam. >> thank you karen. new this morning, heavy smoke and flames damaged a three story building in southwest philadelphia. crews were called to woodland avenue and gould street at 2:00 this morning. investigators say the fire started in the dollar and grocery store and spread to apartments above. the fire also caused smoke damage to some of the neighboring row homes. there are no reports of any injuries. and a blaze in mercer county, new jersey, has meant absolute disaster for a number of families. two dozen homes have burned and forced the residents out. "action news" reporter katherine scott is live for us now in hamilton township. she's got the latest. good morning katherine. >> reporter: good morning, tam. this fire moved quickly. residents rushed to get out. no one was injured in all this but there is a lot of damage and you can see it here this morning with roofs tore up here. there's debris on the

sidewalk. you can see charred out windows. 60 people have been unable to return home. the smoke was heavy. the flames thick and they moved quickly. in the end, 20 homes on this hamilton township block were damaged. 60 people have been displaced. many lost everything having little time to get out of their homes. >> when i walked out, then i turned around and i just was overwhelmed with what i saw. >> and my daughter lost her fish in the fire and she's so upset. >> reporter: her pet fish. >> uh-huh. >> five of them. >> sad since she lost her fish but her life is saved. >> reporter: the fire broke out around 3:45 on the 1700 block of east state street t firefighters from burlington and hunterdon county were called in. the fire began in the area of the roof and then spread. there was work being done on the roof but investigators haven't determined the source of the fire. >> he was using a blow torch on top of the roof right

there. >> we did find roofers working on the roof. we're unsure what the cause of the fire single digit the the flames jumped from roof to roof. 15 of these homes have heavy damage. for those with less damage,'s unclear when those residents will be allowed to return home. the cause of this fire remains under investigation this morning. we're live in hamilton township, katherine scott channel6 "action news." >> also new this morning philadelphia police are looking for the armed man who targeted a 7-eleven. this happened on the 3300 block of tyson avenue in city's mayfair section just before 1 o'clock this morning. police say the suspect walked into the store carrying a weapon and demanded money. he ran off with about $300 in cash. no injuries were reported and police right now are looking for clues in the surveillance video. >> happening today, new castle county police plan to release details of their new push to find this woman who may have been abducted last year. investigators say nefertiri trader was last seen on june

june 20th, 2014. a witness says someone forced her into her acura sedan and drove away. the fbi has joined local police in the efforts top find trader. this is new at 6:00 a grandmother from allentown is speaking out about an unthinkable loss. her community has been holding prayer vigils for simmons and her family ever since the woman's two granddaughters accidentally fell from a fourth floor window back on friday. simmons' five-year-old granddaughter survived. the girl's three-year-old sister was killed. simmons told supporters that she never imagined having to plan her own granddaughter's funeral. >> you take your loved one and you hold them tight and just tell them how much you love 'em because you never know. >> simmons says without the thoughts and prayers of others it would be impossible for the family to cope. >> a second lawsuit haas has been filed against saint joseph's university related to the hazing scandal involving

the women's softball team. "action news" broke the story on april seconds following accusations of lewd conduct and drinking forced on freshmen players by upperclassmen. the most recent lawsuit accuses saint joe's head softball coach terry adams of doing nothing to stop that hazing. it alleges coach adam impeded the investigation by informing players to plead the fifth while being investigated. the university says the investigation is ongoing. >> camden is desperate to bring in new businesses to the impoverished city. the question today is how desperate should the state be about this? maribel aber is live at the nasdaq if times square. good morning maribel. >> today on whether to offer $164 million in tax credits for a company to move to camden. american water works has asked for the tax credits to move

from voorhees. the a number of companies including lockheed martin and the philadelphia 76ers are planning to move to camden thanks to an incentive program the state put in place two years ago. hsbc plans to slash 50,000 jobs, about half the job losses will come as the bank sells operations in brazil and turkey. the british bank when cut thousands of jobs in its remaining operations. the cuts will leave it with a workforce of about 200,000 way down from the close to 300,000 workers it employed five years ago. stocks tumbled again on jitters over potential raise in interest rates. right now futures pointing to a lower open and starbucks has added six new flavors of frappe cheechy chino. the new flavors are based on deserts and include everything from cinnamon roll to lemon bar. starbucks will offer the winning drink at a discount in early july. the new drinks give starbucks a total of 34 frappe clean no, sir flavors. matt and tam if you're counting calories a grande

carmel frappe only 410 calories. >> storm tracker six live double scan and we are looking at a couple of sprinkles and showers. most of these are to the south of philadelphia. if we go in tight some pushing into burlington county new jersey. northeast philadelphia might have seen a little bit of a drip but now it's southern bucks county for the most part with perhaps just a sprinkle. down the shore most of that stuff appears to be angling its way off the coast. as we take a look outside we have cloudy skies across most of the region where it isn't raining. it isn't raining across most of the region. it looks dry at the airport. 71 degrees currently in the city, 70 wilmington, 69 degrees in allentown. remember how it started to feel quite muggy during the day yesterday. well, it still feels humid out there this morning and probably will for a good portion of the day. future tracker six shows us with a frontal boundary still slowly on its way through later this afternoon ahead of it we're still going to be fairly cloudy with some sunny breaks and as soon as noon there could be another redeveloping shower or thunderstorm.

now obviously not everybody is going to see these but those that do could see a heavy downpour and perhaps some gusty winds out ahead of these storms. during the afternoon we should starter to stabilize a little bit this evening maybe a real scattered pop-up storm in the northern areas but for the most part we're going to be drying out and that humidity will start to drop especially during the evening hours maybe even beginning late this afternoon. in those couple of neighborhoods where you do see a storm popping up, though, you do want to take cover because there is a high threat of lightning downpours certainly and perhaps some strong gusty winds again from these isolated spotty storms. not so much worried about hail or tornadoes today. yesterday by the way we did have that tornado watch in the afternoon. wound up with some straight line wind damage but no tornadoes. the closest funnel cloud was up in schuylkill county. 83 degrees is your high in allentown, possibility of a storm popping up this afternoon. maybe even this evening up there. 80 is the high in the shore areas. clouds and sun, a spotty storm can't be ruled out but mainly dry and in philadelphia we're going for a high of 86 today.

a mix of clouds with some sunny breaks. a spotty thunderstorm can't be ruled out. getting a little blustery at times. rolling through the day, 71 by 8 o'clock, 86-degree high at about 3 o'clock and again future tracker showing most of our storms between 11:00 and about three or 4 o'clock this afternoon. we can't totally rule out something popping up after that. most of the action probably in time period. tomorrow with high pressure in control it looks like we get a high of 86 with lower humidity behind that front but enjoy it while it lasts 'cause another front comes in thursday and ahead of that we'll see that humidity popping up again. your exclusive accuweather 7-day, 86 today a spotty thunderstorm can't can be ruled out in a couple of spots. then tomorrow partly sunny and nicer, a high of 86, warm but not as humid. humidity building back then on thursday and it gets hot with a high of 92. friday hot and even stickier with a high of 90 and a late thunderstorm not out of the question and then we get into the weekend and we're back to the 80's with a spotty shower or a thunderstorm possible, frontal boundary kind of

>> ♪♪ >> we have breaking traffic news and we're going take a live shot right now of an accident scene, this is i-78. this is eastbound traffic at lenhartsville. we're seeing all traffic being diverted off of i-78 eastbound. it is closed at exit 35 in berks county. it's an accident involving a tractor-trailer. went down an embankment so they've shut down the roadway at exit 35. you've got to watch for this. they're diverting everyone off onto old reutter 22 and that's what we're looking at live right now. traffic is jammed in this area as we can see because of an accident scene. this is at the point where they're diverting all that

traffic off the roadway. right now on i-78 eastbound it is closed at lenhartsville. i just got off the phone with police in that area and state police telling me they're trying to get to a point where they're going to be able to open one lane but at this point they're forcing everybody off. it's an accident right there. they're still sending crews out there to deal with it. i was on the waze app looking at this and we're seeing speeds leading to this accident of about 6 miles an hour on i-78 eastbound much it's a mess. you don't want to do that. you can use old route 22. basically runs parallel to 78 so that's a good alternate and someone on waze showing us a picture of this accident scene right here and there you can kind of see the tractor-trailer. look at that. how it went down an embankment right here so a horrible accident scene. it was a two-vehicle accident. state police are telling me and we can see that disabled tractor-trailer that semi just going right down the embankment here shutting down all traffic on i-78 eastbound. so a horrible accident scene and this is larry mcfly who is reporting that to us.

he's a member of our 6abc team and showing us what it looks like in that mess right now in berks county. so, we're going to be on top of this. in the meantime i-78 eastbound shut down. if you're in this area traffic is being diverted at old route 22. it runs parallel. that's the best way to try to get around that accident scene. it's a big one in berks county. i talked to police here in gloucester county and they're telling me there's a transformer fire that's causing an issue in clayton at academy street at a when it ton avenue. stick to main street as your alternate. it's causing a local power outage in the area, matt. >> thank you karen. a woman who uses a wheelchair is suing american airlines because she says she was forced to crawl onto the plane. theresa purzell says it happened two years ago while boarding a flight from hawaii to san diego. purzell says a gate agent told her it was too late to set up a ramp. the airline is apologized for the incident. purzell says that is not enough. she wants to make sure it doesn't happen again. >> a second court appointed psychiatrist says the man behind the aurora colorado

theater shooting was perfectly sane at the time. dr. jeffrey mets intersays james holmes knew the difference between right and wrong during that fateful night in july of 2012. 12 people were slot to death dozens more injured. nets interspender more than 24 hours evaluating gnomes 2013 and roughly 100 hours reviewing the overall case. holmes has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity. a massive manhunt continues for two convicted killers who broke out of a maximum security prison in upstate new york. authorities say david sweat and hitch charred matt used power tools to make their escape over the weekend. abc news has learned investigators have interviewed a prison employee, joyce mitchell about the break. it's still unclear how sweat and matt managed to get their hands on the tools. authorities are offering a $100,000 reward for information that leads to their capture. >> 6:18. black bear alert in a bucks county neighborhood. an "action news" viewer takes video of the encounter and explains why it was so surprising.

well. still a little bit damp there. i am detecting some additional showers coming up east of washington, d.c. that might come up into delaware and south jersey a bit later on. it's going to be warm and humid through most of the day a high today of 86 degrees. there will be some showers and thunderstorms again but very spotty. take cover where they hit though 'cause they could produce drenching downpours and gusty winds. in terms of weather across the country, some showers in the southwest. also in the south and along the northeast. if you're flying out toward portland denver minneapolis no problems. there is the slight chance of a severe storm developing later on in the afternoon though, in places including minnesota and wisconsin and even around here a slight chance of a pop-up storm giving you 60 miles per hour gusts. for now it's looking like all green aircraft on the big board at the airport. the only place we're seeing rain locally in any of our most commonly traveled destination is newark new jersey and i can tell you that's not all that strong. matt. >> game three of the nba final center city tonight. cavaliers and warriors are tied at a game a piece.

>> a black bear believed to be 500 pounds showed up in mary jane rossi's backyard in upper black eddie bucks county. she says the bear didn't seem to be afraid of people. it was the first time rossi had seen a bear in the neighborhood and she's lived there for 30 years. >> happening today, new jersey's top court is expected to finally rule on the state's pension reform. a lower court judge said earlier this year that the state has to contribute more for workers retirement under a 2011 law. republican governor chris christie argues that the state can't afford to do that. unions for workers say christie is bound by the law that he signed and notes the workers are paying more fore their retirement benefits. >> 6:27. meteorologist, david murphy is tracking the chance for more stormy weather and that's next. >> philadelphia police released new surveillance in connection to the armed robbery of an off duty officer. more on the man they're looking for when "action news" continues.
