and good wednesday morning to you all. thanks for being here. i'm t.j. holmes. >> i'm brandi hitt in for reena ninan. new developments in the hunt for the convicted killers that escaped from that prison. >> we're learning that richard matt and david sweat may have counted on the help of a prison worker. cnn reporting that joyce mitchell was supposed to be their getaway driver but changed her mind. >> that may be why they could have been here on foot just one county away. this home video shows a seemingly endless line of officers searching that area. abc's bazi kanani has the latest. >> stay with your partner. two-man teams. >> reporter: hundreds of police officers in body armor descend on this tiny town checking every building hovering overhead combing through fields and thick brush in the foothills of the adirondacks where investigators got a tip that prison escapees david sweat and richard matt could be hiding. >> my wife called me up from the

bank and told me to please go home and lock the door. >> reporter: the manhunt near the town of wilsonboro 30 miles from the prison after a resident spotted two men walking along a road at 2 a.m. tuesday in torrential rain when approached they ran off. armed search teams moved in hoping to finally catch the two convicted killers who are now on the run for a fifth day. >> they obviously have to eat. they have to sleep. their level of desperateness will increase as each day goes on. >> reporter: investigators are still trying to find out how they got power tools to drill through a wall cut through pipes and saw open a manhole. officials say those tools have all been found. this morning investigators are still questioning staff and contractors inside the prison including this woman, a supervisor in the tailor shop and also want to know if the special privileges given matt and sweat for good behavior

helped them make their elaborate escape. bazi kanani abc news, washington. >> thank you. much more coming up on "gma." that texas cop seen in a racially charged video has quit the force. eric casebolt submitted a two-word letter which simply said i resign. community leaders described the resignation as a good first step. the police chief called casebolt's actions here during this indefensible. >> he came into the call out of control and as the video shows was out of control during the incident. >> the chief praised the actions of the 11 other officers on the scene. we are going to learn a lot more about this when casebolt's attorney holes a news conference later today. dennis hastert is free on bond after a brief appearance in federal court. the former house speaker entered a not guilty plea to charges of bank fraud and lying to the fbi. abc's brian ross was at the courthouse. >> reporter: mr. hastert, any comment you want to make?

the 73-year-old dennis hastert once second in line to the presidency made his way through security before being booked fingerprinted and entering a plea of not guilty. he declined to answer my questions. mr. hastert, brian ross from abc. is there anything at all you want to say? the charges against him date back to the time he was a popular high school wrestling coach and allegedly sexually abused a male student. the indictment says he paid his victim identified only as individual "a" $1.7 million in hush money in cash to keep his secret from coming out. and federal officials say there was more than one abuse victim. the charges against hastert have raised other questions about how he amassed millions of dollars as a congress maybe and later a lobbyist and came to own two sprawling homes. we saw him with his wife at their place in illinois along with one of their two son, josh the man with the tattoos who

himself became a well-paid washington lobbyist while his father was the speaker of the house. brian ross chicago. >> he could face up to ten years in prison. he surrendered his passport and posted bond. a major strategy change in the battle against isis. hundreds more military advisers soon heading to iraq to help the iraqi military battle the islamic fighters. the final decision was made after a stunning fall of ramadi to isis last month. the plan falls short, though of the combat troops that john mccain and others are called for. the ntsb released findings on the deadly amtrak crash this morning. they're expected to reveal whether the engineer was using his cell phone when that train sped up and derailed killing eight people. yesterday the federal railroad administration called for new safety changes including either automatic speed controls or a second crew member in the driver's compartment. three jurors in the colorado theater shooting trial have been

dismissed. why? they were discussing media coverage of the high-profile case something they were told expressly do not do. 21 jurors remain on the case 12 of whom will decide it. unclear if the dismissed jurors were alternates. a new revelation in the world soccer bribery investigation. it involves a former vice president of soccer's international governing body fifa. jack warner is already under arrest facing extradition to the united states. they are looking now into $750,000 he helped raise for victims of the earthquake in haiti. that money was later used. he denies any wrongdoing. vladimir putin will meet with pope francis at the vatican. the crisis tops the agenda in ukraine. mostly in his easter message, the meeting between putin and the pope twice. putin was an hour late for that visit. a wet but very welcome sight for people in california.

remnants from what was hurricane blanca is ushering in much needed rain and cooler temperatures here. you can see some of the minor street flooding in santa barbara. a half inch of rain fell but not enough to put a dent in the state's four-year record drought. a look at the radar shows a lot less rain on the coast. that moisture is moving inland today. several thunderstorms expected to develop from the central plains into the midwest and eastern great lakes. and still ahead here the new drug that could save millions of americans from strokes and heart attacks. also a courageous canine. a guide dog laying its life on the line jumping in front of a bus to save its owner. plus crushed like a tin can underneath a big rig, the dramatic 911 call made from the driver in that car.

there's san diego now, a brush fire major one triggered by of all things a hawk carrying a snake. yeah what happened here the hawk car rig the snake ran into a high voltage power line. conditions so dry that firefighters including air support rushed to the scene to contain the fire. the two animals killed on impact. it knocked out power to nearby customers and damaged $10,000 worth of electric company equipment. president obama may soon give millions of low and middle income workers a raise. the white house reviewing a plan to use executive action to raise the income under which workers must be paid overtime. right now it stands at $23,000 a year. figure set back in 1970. well somewhere in the 1970s that may be raised to $51,000. between 5 million and 10 million american workers could benefit.

a group of airlines is adopting a new guideline for smaller carry-on bags. had idea behind it is to allow all passengers to put their bags in the overhead compartments without running out of space. room on the plane. the guidelines suggest carry-ons be an inch smaller all around compared to the current maximum size allowed by many carriers. this is not binding right to you and no u.s. airlines have agreed to implement it just yet. okay this is part of what our parent company disney says guests can look forward to on the new "frozen ever after" ride in epcot. elsa will be singing "let it go." it is replacing a 27-year-old water ride at the norway pavilion in epcot's world showcase. it will be opening up early next year. >> oh and the first lady is going to love this next story. let's move, right. a new pizza hut item making its debut next week likely. the hot dog stuffed crust pizza. >> oh, no. >> i cannot make this stuff up

motor city and the windy city. a wild road rage brawl in the streets of los angeles all caught on camera. >> yeah they were just fighting over a lane but then they just started fighting. two testy drivers got out of their car, started throwing blows in the middle of a busy hollywood intersection. you see in this mess. you see that guy narrowly escaping being hit by traffic. the department of transportation officer witnessed the incident but was unable to get the license plates. neither man has filed a complaint. police want anyone with information to come forward. also from the roads in california a frightening situation told through the words of a woman who was trapped in her car and you have to see this car. you can see it there wedged under that tanker truck with the woman still inside. despite all of this she said she had the composure to get out her phone and wall 911 and told the operator she just wanted to get out. >> everything hurts. >> are you still stuck underneath the truck, honey? >> i am. >> okay. >> i'm terrified. >> rescuers arrived shortly

after her call and were able to get her out of there and walked away with just minor injury, if you can believe it. police are still trying to determine who was at fault. a guide dog is recovering this morning, so is his blind owner who he is credited with saving. figo there he is the golden retriever was crossing the treat in brewster, new york with his owner when a school bus transporting two kindergartners failed to stop. that's when figo jumped in action. >> i gave him a command to cross the street and then all of a sudden the bus was there and i think i have memory loss a little bit but people at the gas station saw him jump between me and the bus to protect me. >> yeah figo's leg cut to the bone. but he still fussed over his owner. would not leave her side. she's still hospitalized with a broken elbow, ankle and ribs. he'll have to stay at the veterinary hospital until she is able to care for him.
