a violent night in dallas, texas where a man opens fire on the police headquarters. in the news, a dangerous standoff involving a man in a home in port richmond. shots were fired at police and neighbors were evacuated and s.w.a.t teams were called to the scene. when it was over, two people were dead. dann cuellar is live at the scene with the tbul -- full story, dann. >> reporter: walter, investigators remain on the scene trying to figure out what set off this intense situation the two police cars that were struck by gunfire remain on the scene, the two officers fired upon but not struck give a harrowing tale of what happened after they avid -- arrived at 2:00 p.m. two responding police officers tell us about what happened when

they arrived. >> when we arrived shots were fired at our vehicle. >> as soon as i heard the shots i wanted to get out of the vehicle and get behind cover. >> reporter: the two took cover behind the patrol car and waited for swat officers to arrive because they were pinned down by the gunman who was firing. >> they waited for the arrival of the swat armored vehicle to come on the block, they were place understand vehicle and taken out of the line of fire. officers evacuated residents including children. s.w.a.t team members heard more gunfire coming from the home. fearing that someone was shot they did this. >> we inserted a robot with a camera. there were two men inside the home. two responding officers frazzled and doing okay.

>> i'm glad we had a quick police response and no officers or civilians in the neighborhood were injured. >> reporter: back live on the scene, where you see the police car cruiser 24-a with the driver window blown out by gunfire. police trying to figure out what set off this deadly dispute inside a home. 3500 block of emerald, a man firing at police, they would learn he shot and killed a man inside before killing himself and apparent murder suicide. we're live in port richmond, dann cuellar channel 6 "action news." >> thanks for that report. police in dallas, texas dealt with a dangerous situation themselves as a man inside a van opened fire on their headquarters. we were told he planted explosives outside the buildings, as well. it started after midnight. the suspect fired on the buildings repeatedly and fired on officers, he took off police cornered him in a parking lot. after a standoff investigators

fire crews break through windows on the 11th floor dousing the flames that that were in the kitchen of this unit. >> when when we got here there were heavy smoke in the hallways people couldn't goat out of their rooms. >> we did see people hanging on the balcony earlier they were hanging on the balcony asking for help. >> i help a couple of people down in wheelchairs and the stairs were full of smoke. >> reporter: seven people were taken to the hospital, including one firefighter. >> i grabbed from an and ran the other -- fran and ran the other way. tony burnett was on the floor and got out in time. she thought the fire alarms was a drill. until her dog alerted her.

multiple companies responded to the fire and crews got it under control in an hour, the high temperature made fighting the fire even harder. >> we called that straight alarm immediately because it's labor intensive everybody has to climb 11 stories. the haz/mat team was out here, they have special vests for firefighters to wear that helped cool them down. the red paw relief team was out here they were able to rescue several pellets. annie mccormick channel 6 "action news." >> thank you annie an alleged home invasion suspect remains in critical condition after a homeowner shot him. investigators say a man woke up inside his home on the 5900 block of d street in the city's olney section torched an intruder standing in the bedroom doorway. a struggle ensued and the homeowner fired his gun. the suspect was shot in the

abdomin and rushed to the hospital. no word on the charges or the identity of the suspect. suspected drunk driver left behind a trail of destruction along the street in the city's somerton section. the man drove his pick up truck into 9 different vehicles. 8 of the vehicles intiewrld serious damage -- endured serious damage. the driver was arrested and charged with dui. in camden a similar scene along the 700 block of walnut. just before 3:00 a.m. a driver reportedly high on heroin lost control of the car and slammed into five vehicles. the driver was rushed to cooper hospital. no word on his condition no other injuries reported. it was an unusual sight for people in downtown allentown when a bear decided to take a walk through town. the bear was spotted about a block away where organizers were setting up for a blues festival. the bear looks to be about a
