getaway car. and run away with the two convicted murderers. this morning, where the inmates could be as the search enters its ninth day. >> that story is coming up. but we're going to start here with a true travel nightmare, airline passengers on their way from chicago to london, marooned in rural canada. look at this shot of the passengers lining up for bed assignments in an unheated military barracks. >> apparently there was no room at the inn. the crew looking fresh from a night at a hotel while their passengers were roughing it, everyone then flew to newark airport, which is where we find abc's mary bruce. good morning, mary. >> reporter: good morning, paula. this experience redefines a travel nightmare. passengers abandoned at military barracks. outraged this morning after being forced to endure a long cold night. overnight, hundreds of airline passengers furious after spending over 22 hours at an air force base in a remote region in

canada. >> okay, so, here we are, walking on a trail somewhere in canada. >> reporter: united airlines flight 958 taking off from chicago o'hare at 5:25 p.m. saturday evening. header for london. then the plane faces a maintenance issue. and forced to turn back. landing in goose bay, canada. passengers stayed in military barracks with no heat and just a few blankets, while the plane's crew was taken to a nearby hotel. united telling abc news in a statement, hotel space was not available, so we accommodated our customers at a local military base. >> we have spent the last day and a half in a really dramatic manner. >> reporter: this morning the passengers are finally back in the air, boarding a new plane headed to newark, where they will get on a flight to london. now, that flight is expected to

finally land a little before 2:30 p.m. london time, over 30 hours taking off from chicago. paula. >> boy, will they be relieved to arrive in london. mary, thank you. we turn now to a brazen attack on dallas police headquarters. a crazed gunman fired on officers from inside an armored van. now, he was killed during the standoff. this morning we're learning more about what set him off. abc's ryan owens has the latest from the scene. good morning, ryan. >> reporter: good morning to you, paula. need more evidence of the violence of this attack? look no further than right behind me. this is the front door of the dallas police headquarters. the windows have been shot out. all boarded up this morning as we learn more about the man responsible for it all. new details this morning about an all-out assault against a major american police department dallas police under attack.

>> we believe that this suspect meant to kill officers. >> reporter: family members identify him as james boulware. his father telling abc news, the 35-year-old blamed police after losing custody of his young son. >> was he a perfect son? no. none of us are. but, did he deserve to lose his son? no. >> reporter: boulware's rampage started at 12:30 saturday morning with that barrage of bullets outside police headquarters. then leading police on the chase before stopping at jack in the box restaurant less than 20 miles away. at 4:30 a.m. a bomb robot picking up a suspicious package at the police headquarters, it was filled with pipe bombs. a half-hour later, snipers firing through, killing the suspect. finally afternoon on saturday,

that armored van gutted by a ball of flames. all while investigators try to figure out where he bought an armored vehicle. complete with gun ports. and whether it may have once belonged to a sheriff's department in south carolina. abc news also spoke to the gunman's mother, she, too, is relieved her son didn't kill any police officers. she calls her son's death, suicide by cop. >> those pictures of those van extraordinary. ryan, thank you. we want to move on now to the new information about joyce mitchell, the woman who has allegedly admitted to police that she helped those two prisoners escape in upstate new york. what was moting her as we enter day nine of the manhunt. here's abc's phillip mena. >> reporter: this morning, for the first time, investigators revealing what prison worker

joyce mitchell discussed with detectives during those days of interviews. before her arrest friday night. the district attorney telling abc news she says she planned to meet the escaped inmates at the powerhouse near the prison the night of their escape. where she was headed. she was only told it was a wooded area seven hours away. wylie also revealing that matt and sweat were rehearsing their escape for five weeks. now, abc news has learned that one or both of escapees had a cell phone in prison. police say that mitchem has been cooperative since the day of the escape, talking with investigators throughout the week. >> law enforcement was trying to get as much information as possible from her, because once she's charged, she'll hire a lawyer and she won't speak any further. >> reporter: miles surrounding the prison, known as little

siberia, armed prison guards and state police, along with search dogs, still looking where the escaped killers might be. at the canadian border cars normally only checked leaving canada, now being checked leaving the united states, while these killers are on still on the run. >> if they haven't escaped the area i would advise and remind the community and the residents that that makes these criminals even more dangerous and desperate. >> this morning, joyce mitchell is sitting in a jail cell. this time tomorrow she'll be on her way back to court. >> all right, phillip, thank you. and the race to the white house is heating up this weekend. democratic front-runner hillary clinton relaunching her campaign and republican jeb bush is set to launch his tomorrow. here's cecilia vega on the campaign trail in des moines,

at the famed wahl dorfes a tore ya hotel when a guest's gun accidentally fired. while the wedding guests were taking pictures near a hotel lobby. none of the injuries is considered life-threatening. and on to kentucky, a deadly police encounter caught on surveillance camera. an officer approaches a man, witnesses say the man was drunk in the video you're going to see here in a moment, you see him stumbling away, he then comes back a short time later, swinging a metal flagpole. right there. the officer then fired two rounds, killing that man. the shooting is now under investigation. the police officer placed on administrative leave. and in cleveland, a new report into the deadly police shooting of 12-year-old tamir rice. several police officers saying that the police officer told them that he had warned tamir,

but the boy reached for a weapon, and then he shot him. investigators say it's unclear whether the officer issued commands from inside the car. a report will be given to a grand jury. and a big homecoming for nfl star adrian peterson in texas on saturday. after holding a camp for kids, at his alma mater, peterson spent time with fans. he was suspended most of last season. after striking his 4-year-old son with a switch. and finally, there are flips and then there are monster flips. check this out. watch. as 11-time tom meents, he's making history there. >> was that deliberate? >> first-ever front flip. you didn't know this of a monster truck. watch. he flipped forward once in the air and added an additional roll

this interview went viral. >> are your parents -- are they white? >> reporter: the civil rights activist accused of lying about her race. marking black on a city of spokane job application. >> she did some good, but she did not go about it in the right way. she was white and she was really privileged growing up. >> reporter: this photo at a rally in january, appearing different from the blonde girl born in montana, seen in these photos released by her parents. her physical transformation started a few years ago. >> it started out with the hair and then she would have, you know, probably a little darker tan and it was very progressive. >> reporter: dolezal e-mailing naacp chapters members over the weekend, saying there are many layers to this situation. her correct on the docket monday when the board meets. her predecessor telling me that

before being rescued off of japan. she was not injured, but her mission is now over. guitarist michael clifford of five seconds to summer suffered an injury to his face because of a malfunction of the pyrotechnics in london. clifford is okay, despite there looking like the invisible man, on twitter posting this photo of his bandaged face. >> in georgia, dozens of animals including this rhino escaped from a local zoo, the animals had been roaming the streets and the authorities are warning residents to stay home. and finally, take a look at this, about halfway through the grueling 24 hour of the le mans race in france, this ferrari catching fire. during a refueling attempt. that's during a pit stop there. did driver stayed in, before the fire quickly spreads before finally being persuaded of getting out of the vehicle. the driver was okay. that was $250,000.

a 12-year-old girl, dead, plummeting two stories, her safety tether reportedly snapping as she zipped through the trees at a ymca camp in north carolina. her death, a reminder of the potential dangers. zip-lining instructor telling me how to keep your family safe when you hit the lines this summer. what is your number one tip for zip liners? >> my number one tip is test your equipment. >> reporter: according to a lawsuit filed by tabatha baker, safety equipment was responsible for her fall. the park owner disagreeing, saying the equipment didn't break. >> you want to look for any loose wiring, any loose stitching. >> reporter: in january, a 15-year-old boy scout was killed in arizona when he zipped without a safety break. no charges were filed. >> you want to make sure that nothing is overlooked. because one thing that's overlooked, it could be tragic. >> reporter: and actor hugh
