making news in america this morning, breaking overnight, nine people killed inside a historic black church. a gunman opening fire during a prayer service. >> these people were in church. they were in church in church and they violated the saptsty of that. >> police chief calling this a hate crime. the all-out search for the suspect. the child also who survived by playing dead. severe flooding up to a foot of rain in some areas. the rising waters rushing down streets, even taking the bus away. we're tracking today's threat. airport scare. the boeing 737 catching fire at the terminal as terrified passengers watched. money makeover. a female face soon gracing an american bill.

and hello, everybody. we begin with that breaking news out of south carolina. a massacre at a historic black church in charleston. nine shot dead believed to be victims of a hate crime. >> intense manhunt under way for at the emanuel ame church as congregants gathered for bible study. >> dozens of heartbroken ministers rushed to the scene holding hands and prayer all night. >> witnesses tell abc news the gunman actually attended part of the service. they also say one of the survivors is a 5-year-old boy who played dead. for more now here's abc's lana zak. >> reporter: horrific tragedy in charleston, south carolina a search group shot dead as they gathered in prayer. >> they were in church. they were in church. >> reporter: eight people dead

at the scene. the ninth died at the hospital. a child reportedly survived by playing dead. officials suspect a hate crime. >> the only reason someone could walk into church and shoot people praying is out of hate. the only reason. that it is the most dastardly act that one can possibly imagine. >> reporter: emanuel ame church is one of the oldest black churches in the south. the suspected shooter still on the loose is described as a white male around 21 years old. officials would not go into greater detail on possible motives for the shooting but the pastor was well known for his civil rights activism and was pushing for police to wear body cameras. according to church member the shooter reportedly came into the church sat down and attended part of the bible study before opening fire. >> active shooter, multiple people down. >> reporter: in the chaos amid a bomb threat the shooter fled. >> as far as we know right now there's only one person.

we will put all resources and put all of our energy into finding this individual. >> reporter: lana zak, abc news washington. let's get more now on the details of the mood what's happening there in downtown charleston. >> kristin mcfan is working the story for us and joins us by phone. good morning to you. any leads that might lead police closer to closing in on the suspect? >> reporter: we have another news conference coming out soon but nothing more about the killer. they will do everything they can to find him tonight and there are helicopters everywhere. police combing the peninsula of charleston and so we're hoping that's the case. so far, no updates. >> i know we are trying to get information and get it out there but also a lot of families and friends gathering trying to get information about the people in that church. >> reporter: yeah i've been talking to family members leaving a hotel just across the street from the church where they've been gathering and they

were supposed to get confirmation on those that were killed the eight dead in the church and then the one more victim that died at the hospital. but they just cannot -- they're not going to get that confirmation until noon tomorrow they said. you can imagine the devastation here. it's been really really sad to watch. >> we can only imagine. kirsten, can you tell us more about the suspect and the hunt to find him? >> reporter: i did hear from two other family members they heard from people there that the man did join the bible study for a short time before he opened fire and he was described as a white male, 21 years old with sandy blond hair obviously extremely dangerous. the police are saying if you hear anything know anything please call police immediately. there will be a reward offered. they're determining that amount this opening. and there was a man that fit the description of the shooter that was handcuffed earlier but police are not saying what if

carry out a terror attack against new york city landmarks and since last month at least seven alleged isis supporters have been charged in the u.s. sources tell us many more arrests are anticipated before the fourth of july holiday. turn now to major developments in the search for those two escapees. police released these photo, new pictures of what they might look like after two weeks on the run. prosecutors confirmed the prison employee now under arrest plotted with the two escapees to have her husband killed. they also say that joyce mitchell had a sexual relationship with one of the men. presidential candidate jeb bush has canceled events planned today in the charleston area. he sat down for an exclusive interview with abc's david muir in iowa the former florida governor was asked if he felt the need to distance himself from his brother. former president intelligence w. bush. >> there is a real fascination of where i'm different, where i'm the same but you know when you love someone as your brother or your dad, it's not easy for me to say, just throw him under

you're looking at a pretty powerful brush fire burning 85 miles from phoenix, arizona creating huge plumes of smoke. about 300 residents have been forced to evacuate. gusty winds are fanning the flames and temperatures there rose to nearly 110 degrees. and an update on those cars being recalled because of takata air bags. the government says the full list of vehicle identification numbers recalled vehicles is now available online at

safercar.gov. search for your car's vin number. interest rates and fed chair janet yellen says the economy is getting stronger but still wants to see further gains before raising rates. stocks on wall street climbed slightly on her comments. the dow gained 31 nasdaq up 9, s&p 500 adding 4 points. at&t is about to get hit with a $100 million fine over its un unlimited data plans. fcc says the country's second largest wireless carrier has been slowing down internet speeds without properly disclosing that to customers. the proposed fine is the largest in its history. a group that approves emojis is adding 37 new ones. here's a sample. plenty of food including a cheese wedge, taco and popcorn. can't overlook the unicorn. it's up to tech giants like apple, microsoft and google to decide if they'll become available for use.
