>> yes, on sunday. let's go to adam joseph live on city avenue. already felt plenty of summer. >> we've had the heat, the humidity and the sunshine is back. it's temporarily because we have big changes over the upcoming weekend. as we look at the numbers it's 88 degrees with that sunshine in philadelphia, 91 in washington, 95 in richmond and only 60 to the north where there's a cold front that is trying to pass through. there are a couple of downpours south of bellmawr, one that has flared up near the northeast extension in montgomery county and also a couple in berks county but that's just the very beginning stages of what will be a wet second half of the weekend. double scan live radar shows the remnants of bill's moisture continue to pull from saint louis to paducah kentucky and through parts of the ohio valley and that is all aiming in our direction for the weekend. a flood watch will go into that effect saturday evening and linger through sunday evening so for father's day for the first day of summer, flooding is possible. we could see inches of rain and it could be rather stormy

here sunday. we'll chat more about this upcoming weekend and that deluge of rain we'll see coming up in the full accuweather forecast when we come back inside. >> adam thank you. in the meantime the sunshine and warm temperatures made it the perfect day for a swim. many public schools are opening across the area for the weekend including in philadelphia as well as in one community that's been without a place to swim for quite some time now. eva pilgrim is live in fairmount park with more for us this afternoon. i'm just waiting to see if you had the flip-flops and the suntan lotion ready to go there, eva. >> reporter: alicia, i totally have on the wrong outfit for this story today. check it out. this is what summer vacation looks like. school's out and these kids wasted no time to take advantage as the first of the city pools opened today. the sun is out and the can kids at the rec center in fairmount park are more than ready. >> we got five more minutes to get in the pool. >> reporter: today the first of four philadelphia parks and

rec pools are opening up. these kids are all here for one reason. >> go swimming. >> 'cause it's hot outside and i can't take it no more. i'm just burning up. >> i like swimming. i can have funds with my friends and all that. >> three two, one. >> reporter: the wait is over. by july 1st, all 70 city pools will be opened. the summer programs and pools create about 800 jobs all to make sure the kids have fun this summer. >> for a lot of kids this is their vacation. parents are working, they may not be able to afford to go down the shore or up the mountains. >> reporter: the pool at the george washington carver community center is getting ready to open tomorrow. >> they had to actually jackhammer the fiberglass off of the pool. >> reporter: the pool was closed last year because of needed repairs thanks to an aniston muss $80,000 donation, the pool has been fixed. >> our hope is to be able to get them to live in way that they can be positive and that they can be productive and

a massive water main break ruined their homes in west philadelphia last sunday. city council woman jannie blackwell called an emergency meeting where visibly angry homeowners voiced complaints. some of them have no electricity, no gas all that of days after their homes were flooded around the 500 block of north 52nd street. others say no one has even come to assess the damage let alone clean it up. >> the basement is totaled totaled. mud, everything is all over the place. the water went all the way up to the ceilingly. >> the water department will reimburse these families who have to stay in a hotel but only after they submit a receipt to the claims process. that makes a greater financial hardship for those who don't have the money up front. that was the first of two massive water main breaks in the city this week. yesterday a hunting park shopping center was flooded when a 120-year-old water pipe burst. john rawlins has more on the problems caused by philadelphia's aging water

system. that's coming up in a live report at 6:00. >> there is a meeting in town today for the republican leadership and that brought presidential hopefuls to our area to make their pitch to their fellow party members. vernon odom is live in center city where we heard from one man already in the race and another who is likely not far behind. vernon. >> reporter: all those gop hopefuls speaking here have been trying to show these influential party. >> we need them to be strong and talk truth to the american people and congress. >> reporter: chris christie at a lunch gather dag sounding more and more like a candidate for the white house. but the new jersey governor continued to dance right up to the line of a formal announcement but not go all the way. before the northeast republican leadership conference which has seen a lot of gop presidential hopefuls passing through. christie threw the

conservative crowd the standard red meat. >> iraq is in disarray and on fire. you see that libya is in disarray and on fire. you see that syria is in disarray and on fire. egypt is under marshall law. >> reporter: governor christie outlined various domestic policy reform plans but mentioned nothing about the south carolina massacre. senator lindsey graham of south carolina was slated to speak today but he canceled to go home to deal with that crisis. >> where are the jobs. >> reporter: former pennsylvania senator rick santorum was a headliner. he did not comment during his speech about the racially mass murder in charleston. >> there are a whole bunch of voter that is frankly the republican candidates aren't talking to and you look at the last election we had a lot of blue collar workers stay home thinking they don't think

either party has anything to say to them. >> reporter: the gop field stands at 12 and growing. unprecedented and if you feel quicksand. >> the field could grow to 15. now, imagine the voters out that the in the republican caucuses and primaries eyeing threw toying figure out among 12 to 15 people even the debate -- the structure and formats of the debates are controversial simply because there's so many candidates. >> reporter: this gop conference wraps up tomorrow with a sales pitch by wisconsin governor scott walker. live in center city, i'm vernon odom, channel6 "action news. >> all right, vernon, thank you. the fire fly musikfest value continues today in dover, delaware. it's day two of the four day concert at the woodlands near dover international speed way. organizers expect about 90,000 people to attend overall. the legendary paul mccartney is tonight's headliner. the music will go on all weekend rain or shine.

>> oh, my gosh, i would had you ever to be there. >> me, too. >> didn't get a ticket. oh well. time for the "action news" traffic report. >> let's go to matt pelman in the traffic center where people are no doubt trying to get to that weekend. >> they're trying. for sir poil and everybody else heading down to dover on highway one and route 13 it's an obstacle course on 95 in the city. first there's a crash in the northbound lanes just north of the vine street expressway involving a motorcycle. police are on the scene blocking the right lane as you can see. then just further north there's another crash by the betsy ross bridge taking out the two left lanes. you're kind of swerving around to get around these accidents on 95 northbound in spots that would normal. be busy anyway. so, at this point you start to jam just north of the walt whitman bridge on up to that second accident scene by the betsy ross bridge. and it would have been busy regardless. we've got a concert at the mann music center, new kids on the block at the wells fargo center we've got a phillies game, so many different events

contributing to volume problems in and around the city. and oh, my do we have a volume problem here on the 30 bypass in chester county, it's a long slow crawl westbound from 202 to 113. we had an earlier and disabled vehicle there that just cleared. and if you're headed down the shore as so much you are on this friday afternoon watch out for a crash on the garden state parkway southbound by wildwood. right lane is blocked with a 3-mile jam there. let's grab the ipad do the commuter report. it's a busy friday afternoon and our friend d bobcat says watch out for a crash along the kelly drive close to fountain green. unfortunately it's one of many out there on this friday afternoonly we'll check it again monica and alicia coming up in the next half hourly. >> matt thank you. still ahead more than a dozen people are hurt when a cruise ship crashes and the accident leaves the ship stuck in the water. >> plus, the schools struggling financial one local district just paid thousands of dollars to hold its graduation at a hotel casino. what leaders are saying about that decision. >> and bitter news from pennsylvania's chocolate

>> nearly 300 people were on board a cruise ship when it crashed into a wall while entering a lock in upstate new york. more than 20 people were hurt. right now officials say the water from the lock has been drained and that ship is still sitting there between two walls where it will remain until it can be moved. >> respond to boating accident. >> reporter: the frantic call for help came in just before 10:00 last 92 night. 273 passengers and crew members were on board when the cruise ship crashed into one of the walls of the eisenhowerer lock near the canadian border and then started to sink. >> boat's take on water. >> reporter: officials say 22 people were injured and rushed to the hospital. >> you may want to move your lighting units up to the scene as soon as possible. >> reporter: there were 192 french and swiss passengers on board along with 81 crew members. the ship was on its way to

toronto when for some reason it slammed into a river lock wall in the saint lawrence sea way. overnight the coast guard kept the remaining passengers on the vessel as crews started to drain the water from the lock and tried to determine just what to do with the ship which is now stuck and damaged. >> if they can repair the ship with the passengers on board then the passengers will remain on board and continue on with the cruise. however, i'm leading to believe that there is enough damage to the ship that that probably will not take place. >> reporter: fortunate no one was seriously injured and while officials continue to assess the damage done, they're also trying to figure out what went correct me if i'm wrong and then, of course, monica, the task of moving that massive ship. >> incredible effort. my goodness. back here ralph roberts the man who founded comcast and turned night one of the nation's biggest companies has died. comcast says roberts passed away in philadelphia last night of natural causes. he spent $500,000 back in 1963

to buy american cable systems the company in mississippi. he then changed the company's name to comcast and continued to acquire more cable systems turning them all into the giant that comcast is today. he was also an alum of the university of pennsylvania and he served in the navy. ralph roberts was 95. the financially struggling atlantic city school district is paying $11,000 for a high school graduation venue. seniors got their diplomas today here at the trump taj mahal. it had that $11,000 price tag. the district says graduation is usually held at boardwalk hall but the space wasn't available this year. they didn't say how much boardwalk hall usually costs. the school board president suggested the school should have held graduation in its football stadium which would have been free. the district state monitor says he'll look into that for next year. hershey is cutting its forecast for growth and with that comes hundreds of job cuts. the company says sales are slower than expected particularly in china. as a result, the pennsylvania

chocolate maker says it will eliminate 300 jobs by the end of the year. the company says it still expects sales to grow between four and 5 percent but that's lower than its previous estimate of six to 7 percent. and not so sweet of a closing day on wall street taking a look at the closing numbers there for you the dow jones dropping 101 points, the nasdaq 15 points down and the s & p 500 also losing 11 points on the day. >> an all day radio on that is under way to help men and women who risk their lives for our country. it is the annual 102.9 donation drive to help veterans with jobs meals and housing. wmgk host john debella is running the show from the national constitution center. since 6:00 this morning he has been urging listeners to contribute. you can donate for another hour and 40 minutes or so until 6:00 p.m. tonight. proceeds benefit philadelphia veterans multi service center a terrific effort. >> time for the accuweather

forecast this friday. >> absolutely. t.g.i.f. everybody. let's go to adam joseph see what we're in for. >> sunshine has returned and as we look at double scan live radar, we do have a couple downpours and showers that are popping north and west of the city as very scattered at this point as some energy is trying to drop in from the north and west near worcester and south of lansdale. that is where we're seeing a couple of those downpours developing heading towards norristown, also birdsboro and also to the south and east of fleetwood in berks county. you may get hit by a quick shower this evening but most of us will be on the dry side. it's very warm no matter where you are. 83 allentown, 86 in philadelphia. 85 in millville and with that north we feel wind in sea breeze, we're between about 82 and 85 degrees at the jersey shore but satellite and radar you can clearly still see that spin to the west. that's that wound up trap cal entity that originally was tropical storm bill as it made landfall on monday in texas

and it is slowly work, its way across its country and it's aiming in our direction. association your weekend kickoff tomorrow in the city a lost clouds, there will be a scattered shower late in the day at 83 degrees. at the shore some afternoon showers developing again with a lot of clouds of 76 and in the poconos some scattered showers, 70 degrees but tomorrow is not your washout of a day. really it comes in saturday night into early sunday morning. future tracker at 3 o'clock tomorrow afternoon again you can see some of those downpours even thunderstorms. the farther you are west of philadelphia, the better chance of seeing some of that activity tomorrow afternoon and then the main thrust of rain with the remnants of bill will arrive in the wee hours of sunday morning. this is 2 o'clock in the morning and it's going to be so tropically humid that you will hear that rain come down extremely hard while we're sleeping and that lingers until about 8 o'clock on sunday morning. as it starts to pull away some sun returning to the west and then in fact for the afternoon

hours of father's day now that system could move out fast enough that sunshine returns for the latter part of your sunday with that heat also kicking up. so, take a look at the future tracker expected rainfall totals as the remnants of bill pass through early on sunday morning anywhere between about an inch and a half of rain and as much as 3-inches in some areas and a lot of this rain will come in a very short amount of time. that's why flood watches will go into effect and we could see fast rising waters around here during again a 2:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. period on sunday. your four day at 4:00 clouds with an afternoon shower, 83 degrees tomorrow. not the best of weekends. we have that early rain on sunday. but we could salvage a good chunk of sunday here with sunshine with temperatures soaring to 89 degrees with that tropical humidity. it's hot but less humid. behind the system on monday of 90 degrees and then more showers and thunderstorms are likely on tuesday. >> hm. >> at 89 degrees and with any kind of tropical entity so to

>> police say they've caught man who robbed a mexican restaurant in bear. they say 21-year-old marco medina acosta held up the mexican restaurants on pulaski highway in bear last month. they say they searched his apartment and found evidence that links him to the crime. he is in jail after he couldn't post $55,000 bail. police in north carolina are looking for a man who broke into a market by pulling out an air conditioner. now, police say the man pulled the air conditioner so he could get into carolina market. once inside he grabbed $2,000 cash as well as 10 cartons of cigarettes. police are asking anyone with information to please give them a call. >> still ahead from a frozen custard treat to a class on

>> ♪♪ >> "action news" continues. >> it is 4:30 now and "action news" continues with the case of the hot tub hospitallers. how a couple of women who took a dip in strangers spa got caught. >> when most people look for a vacation home a pool is on the list must haves. why they want to keep renters out of backyard pools. >> a hard lesson to learn. after 18 years a man tried to track down his junior high schoolteacher hoping to apologize for tormenting her back then but what he found he says shook him to the core. >> but we begin with a warning, one north philadelphia man will never forget. one minute howard james was lying in his seconds floor bedroom, the next he was outside in his yard surrounded by debris and dust. his home of nearly five decades had disintegrated around him. as james told "action news" reporter katherine scott the only thing that is hurting

today is his heart. >> i started looking up and looking up and next thing you know i saw it coming. >> reporter: howard james was inside his second floor bedroom around 7:30 this morning when he heard creeing. suddenly the wall of his north philadelphia home where he's lived for 47 years came crashing down. >> a cloud of dust came sewn i just put my hands over the head and rolled to the side. when i came to, i was in the yard. >> reporter: howard was knocked out when a beam hit his head. wood and bricks surrounded him and piles of rubble. and yet remnants of his home on fairhill street remained intact. like these old medals hanging on an upstairs wall. >> they wandered me to go to the hospital. i probably need to go to the hospital but right now i'm too numb. >> reporter: howard says there was a smaller collapse in the lower side of the wall last friday. he went to l and i this week to get a permit to make repairs. the contractor was due out today. he admits he was warned not to stay here but he never imagined this would happen. >> i didn't think it was that

bad that it would collapse while i was in there in the bed. >> reporter: howard thinks the rain overnight loosened some of the bricks on the side wall. he's been a tailor all his wifelife and wanted to go inside and get his sewing machine but officials say it's just not safe. >> i'm alive. i'm not going the take that for granted. i'm alive and that's what counts the most, i'm alive. >> reporter: howard can't return home so at this point he says he's going to stay with family while he figures out his next step. in north philadelphia, katherine scott, channel6 "action news." >> two men were shocked while they were working on a roof in south philadelphia this morning. chopper 6hd over the scene along the 2200 block of fitzwater street. that's where a ladder that the men were using came into contact with a power line at 11:00 a.m. a witness told "action news" the line arced as the workers were coming down from the roof and seriously injured one of them. >> it was a -- a tremendous spark that the wire hit on the

ladder and when it hit the ladder, he was shaking and moving and then it popped and all -- all the electricity and the fire just jumped on his clothes. >> that man was rushed to press bit attorney hospital with traumatic injuries. the other worker was treated at the scene. peco energy says there were some outages related to the incident but most customers were back online in a few minutes. "action news" has learned this early morning house fire in germantown was deadly. firefighters initial had trouble putting out the blaze because the home was filled with other stuff. it was sparked in the 5600 block of bloyd street at 1:00 a.m. crews will to cut their way through heavily fortified windows in order to tackle those flames. tyke them about 45 minutes to get the fire under control. that is when they found a woman's body after they went through the debris and rubble. she's believed to be between the ages of 30 and 50 years old.

they're trying to determine if the death was related to the fire or the hoarding situation. >> the sister of a philadelphia cop killed by an intellectually disabled man says the decision not to execute him is excruciating. daniel boil's sister told a north dakota newspaper that the pennsylvania supreme court's ruling is unfair and not justice for her family t on tuesday the high court upheld a lower court decision that 52-year-old edward brace see's iq of 74 made him ineligible for the death penalty. bracey shot 21-year-old boil eight times back in 1991. the rookie officer died two days later. bracey is now serving a life sentence without the possibility of parole. the local boy scout chapter in philadelphia has voted to allow gay members and leaders only into its ranks. the cradle liberty council approved the policy today. it bans discrimination based on sexual orientation for the 15,000 scouts in the philadelphia region and local

employees. the national boy scouts of america already allows gay scouts but not gay leaders. the organization's president said just last month he doesn't believe that ban will hold. >> peco is helping folks beat the heat again this year. the company donated 600 fans to local senior centers today 100 went to the center in the park on germantown avenue. the rest were distributed across the five county region. peco also shared some energy saving tips for folks just in time for the official arrival of summer this sunday. >> they're going the need those fans. >> yeah, and if you don't have air conditioning and you use a fan inside always keep the window opened to circulate the air. if you shut the window it becomes an oven in the house even with the fan running. that's one tip high to pass along for the summer season. very important one. >> we also have downpours we're tracking for the week. as we take a look right now we're having a couple downpours pop up along the pennsylvania turnpike especially west of willow grove. heading to the south and east no lightning right now just some very heavy rainfall towards jenkintown and this is

>> a section of highway 219 gave way over a creek. it happened just as crews were rebuilding the bridge. three of the workers were hurt but it could have been worse because the bridge was opened to traffic at the time. fortunately no cars were driving over it when it came crashing down. penndot says the bridge is 103 years old. obviously it is now also undergoing inspections. now to a shocking story overseas. that is where british airways officials are investigating just how a stow a way's perilous journey ended in tragedy. authorities say a man who had

been hiding in the wheel well of one of their jets fell to his death moments before it landed in london. he apparently managed to survive an 11 hour flight from south africa with another stow a way despite freezing conditions at 33,000 feet. his body, though, was found on top of an office building near heathrow international airport. the other stow a way is in serious condition at a local hospital. some uninvited backyard guests have been caught thanks to the investigative work of social media sleuths. a home security camera captured four women using a stranger's hot tub without permission in like coaming county pennsylvania. police posted their photos on facebook and within just 15 minutes tipsters helped to put names to the faces. without those images, though, police say they probably would not have pursued the case. >> came to us and said we found a beer bottle in our pool and the hot tub cover opened this wouldn't even -- we wouldn't put any effort night. it would be a report in case

more information came in later. >> police police say one woman has turned had your several in after she saw her picture online. still unclear what if any charges will be filed. >> here at the big board with the big talkers. when it comes to summer fun for many it's all about the pool and so some people in rehoboth beach delaware have a big problem with the city proposal to ban vacation pools and hot tubs at rental properties. apparently others in the community though have been complaining about the noise. so, tonight city officials will vote on whether owners of rental properties have to cover and lock up pools and hot tubs and prevent renters from using them. many are calling this a summer party foul saying a ban will drive away visitors and that of course affects businesses who rely on summer tourists. now to a story of the power of apology from a once self described bully. this is nate davis and 18 years ago in kansas he says he was brought at a to his seventh grade spanish teacher

mrs. florence who was in a wheelchair. he launched a video campaign on facebook to find her. and say he is sorry. he says i was an angry 12-year-old. i treated mrs. florence like dirt. dumping pencil shavings on her head spitting gum in her hair stealing from her purse and locking her out of her own classroom. this tweet to find her was shared hundreds of times until he found out she passed away seven years ago. now the father of five message. >> it's not the end. just because a kid acts up or a kid does terrible things, you know, in their youth it's not the end of the story for that person. just be patient. >> he's now going to meet with mrs. florence's niece to carry through with his apology and he says always in life be grateful for the people like mrs. florence who give you those second chances. >> and finally it's one of those serendipitous predestined kind of love

one other ramp from 29 to the northbound side of 202 with normal southbound slowing on 202 headed towards the 30 bypass which is also jam packed this afternoon on the westbound side headed out towards 113 where we had some earlier problems. if you're headed down the shore, you will not be alone. there's a 4-mile jam on the garden state parkway southbound headed toward an accident by wildwood. that's still taking out the right lane. in elsmere delaware, it's a vehicle fire we're watching along 141 northbound approaching route two. that's kirkwood highway. and in ogletown watch out for a crash along prides crossing at route four which is stanton ogletown road. no shortage of traffic complaints this afternoon, monica and alicia. we'll check them again at 5 o'clock. >> of course. all right, thank you so much. we want to take you to the shore right now. >> yes, stepping outside sky6 hd looking live at cape may. you see people setting up on the beach there. it's a hot one. meteorologist adam joseph has your exclusive accuweather 7-day forecast including a look at father's day and the first official day of summer next. >> ♪♪

>> ♪♪ >> meteorologist adam joseph checking out your weekend forecast. >> it's a big weekend. we've got father's day we've got the gary papa run. >> right. >> we have the first day of summer on sunday. >> we got kind of a half of a weekends in there. >> yeah, it's going to be pretty -- not just a washout for part of the weekend and then the other half not so bad. we'll try to time them out for you. as we take a look at live radar we have a couple downpours in northwestern chester county, a couple northwestern berks county but we also have a cluster of downpours heading into some very popular areas along 611 into jenkintown moving away from flourtown just skirting manayunk a couple of sprinkles along the schuylkill right now and bustleton avenue getting hit by some heavy downpours and this will

continue to slide into northeast philadelphia and eventually bump over the river into palmyra and eventually into parts of camden county but really that's the only heavy downpour we're tracking at the present time. the rest of us it's sunny, it is very warm. moderately muggy. 85 in millville, 83 in allentown with a northwesterly wind. it is in the 80's at the shore as well. we continue to watch this spin. this is the remnants of what was tropical storm bill that made landfall near corpus christi in texas on monday so it's only made a very small go to the north and east here this week and it will slowly work along the midatlantic region for the middle of the weekend so as we time for you here a lot of clouds tomorrow morning. we're not going to see a lot of sun over the upcoming weekend. in the afternoon tomorrow at 4 o'clock there will be some scattered downpours and thunderstorms popping especially west and southwest of philadelphia. if you're going to be at fire fly be prepared to get some of those downpours late tomorrow

and especially tomorrow night into early on sunday morning p you can see how future tracker lights up. these are the tropical downpours as the center of what was bill passes through and these will be some very torrential downpours that pass by during the early morning hours of sunday. we could see inches of rain in just a matter of hours. that could lead to some flooding and then it starts to pull away during the morning hours of sunday and then maybe we'll get some sunshine breaking out sunday afternoon. so the key timing for the heaviest of the rain is mainly when we're asleep. 2:00 a.m. through 9:00 a.m., one to 3 inches and maybe isolated 4-inches. there could be some strong storms south of philadelphia in the wee hours of the morning. even the possibility of some stream flooding since so much rain is going to come in a very short window of time. and for that gary papa run it will be very humid in the morning, down in the city of philadelphia some leftover downpours, 74 degrees at 7 o'clock and at 10 o'clock, 78 degrees. the ocean temperatures warm but i don't think a lot of
