. >> ♪♪ >> "action news." delaware valley's news program. with matt o'donnell, tamala edwards, karen rogers and meteorologist, david murphy. >> ♪♪ >> good morning. breaking news here at 4:30. at least two tornadoes touched down overnight in the midwest. you're taking a look at video of the widespread drugs isn't cold city in illinois. injuries reported, homes and businesses severely damaged. another tornado caused damage in michigan. live report on those tornadoes at 5:00 a.m. and the same system is moving our way. we're tracking the potential for severe storms by the afternoon rush. >> the summer swelter is another big concern today. an excessive heat advisory

goes into effect later this morning it will feel like nearly 100 in philadelphia. >> philadelphia police say this is the truck that nearly killed a man. the driver took off. >> two key leaders in mississippi and south carolina say the confederate flag has to be moved or removed altogether. we dig into the debate. >> good morning out that, it is 4:30 on this tuesday june 23rd. matt is off. nydia han is joining us. i don't want to go to you david. i just don't want to hear about this. [laughter] >> we'll get to the traffic eventually but let's go to david. >> we have a rough day in terms of how it's going to feel and also that storm chance. we'll start with the heat advisory. this is kicking in at 11 o'clock until 6 o'clock. it's for urban centers for trenton down through philadelphia, back down into wilmington and southern delaware and into parts of south jersey and southeastern pennsylvania. the heat index in these areas especially where you've got a lot of concrete and asphalt will make it feel like it's close to 100 degrees this afternoon so definitely cool drinks and take it slow and

take it easy as well. as we take a look at, there we go -- as we take a look at the satellite reading, you can see that the cloud cover is beginning to pick up a little bit on us. we also have that line of showers outer to the north and west although we won't have to worry about any precipitation in any storm activity until later this afternoon. as we take a look at the temperature profile right now we're off to another warm start across the region. 77 degrees in philadelphia. 75 in wilmington. 67 in allentown. 75 in sea isle city. and your dewpoint, well, this is really the problem the dewpoints have come back overnight as we expected and we've got a lot of numbers in the upper 60's and low 70's and wherever you see the 70's that's oppressive humidity you're dealing with this morning and close to it in philadelphia and not quite as bad up in allentown but still a problem up there. as we head out the door this morning between 6:00 and 8:00, muggy, partly sunny. 74 by 6 o'clock 79 degrees by

9 o'clock. and then as we roll down through the afternoon 95 degrees is going to be your high at 3 o'clock. that is going to be a cookerly only 2 degrees off the record. the humidity will be very high and then the other issue of course is those storms and i'll show you on future tracker six about when we think those are going to roll through this afternoon. karen where they hit they could produce strong damaging winds. more on that coming up. >> first let's go over the traffic. the vine street expressway approaching the schuylkill traffic eastbound remains closed. westbound has reopened. it causes big headaches so hang in there. you got to do that the rest of the week. this is i-95 at the blue route. the ramp from i-95 northbound to the blue route northbound has reopened. that overnight construction is clear so at least no problems right there. in north coventry township chester county we have 422 blocked at route 100 both ways. this is due to an accident that also brought down a pole. in the meantime until they fix that downed pole stick to 724

as your alternate. burlington bristol bridge closed, closing each night from 9 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. here through thursday night. they're working on maintenance. in the meantime just tyke to the turnpike connector instead tam. >> thank you karen. philadelphia police got a big break overnight in a hit and run. they impounded the vehicle that they say almost killed a man. "action news" reporter katherine scott is lie at the accident investigation division in north philadelphia. good morning katherine. >> reporter: good morning, tam. that's right, police have the vehicle but the search is still on for the driver. the victim remains at the hospital in critical condition and investigators here are trying to piece this one together and try to figure out where that driver s they have not released a description or even said if they know who they're looking for at this point. this happened around 10:15 last night in hunting park. police were called out around that time and when they arrived in the 600 block of erie avenue they found a 40-year-old man. he had been on his bicycle when he had been struck and the vehicle took off. he was rushed to temple university hospital in

critical condition. the driver fled the scene but police soon located the vehicle, a ford f-150 with some front end damage. so far though, no one has been taken into custody and the search is still on for the driver. police haven't said yet if they know who they're looking for but they want to hear from you if you have any tips. we're live in north philadelphia, katherine scott channel6 "action news." >> katherine thank you for that. new this morning, atlantic city police are investigating two shootings not far apart. around 1:30 this morning a man was shot in the arm and leg on the 300 block of north carolina avenue. another man was shot in the leg on mediterranean avenue at kentucky avenue. both of these men are in the hospital in stable condition. police have not announced an area are evident in either case. and philadelphia police are looking for the gunman who opened fire on a packed kensington block shooting seven adults and children. this happened yesterday afternoon on the 700 block of east hilton street. police say the lone gunman sprayed that block with pellets, a shot gun was found at the scene.

two of the adults hit are still in critical condition. two other adults plus a 10-year-old an three-year-old are in stable condition. another 10-year-old was released from the hospital. >> the emotional debate over the confederate flag is ramping up. mississippi house speaker is leading a call to remove the confederate emblem from mississippi's flag. >> some leaders in south carolina still reeling from the charleston church massacre are calling for that flag to be moved from the state capitol grounds. >> erin o'hearn at the big board with more. the battle symbol of the deep south under siege s some think it's a symbol of hatred. >> reporter: that's right. this is a decades long debate which may have reached a tipping point. south carolina's governor nikki haley is demanding state lawmakers move quickly to take down the couldn't confederate flag in front of the state capitol. this is mississippi's flag with a confederate emblem on

it. lawmakers calling for that flag to be removed. many say it represents hate hatred associated with with violence and segregation. mississippi- in south carolina haley says she's not against the heritage the flag represents but said yesterday it is time for a change. but some family members of the charleston church shooting victims respect skeptical of her timing of the announcement. >> for many people in our state, the flag stands for traditions that are noble. for those who wish to show their respect for the flag on their private property, no one will that stand in your way. but the statehouse is different. and the events of this past week call upon us to look at this in a different way. >> last week her position was we don't have time for this debate right now. last week her position was

not. >> marone says the president was speaking candidly about a topic that related to last week's incident in charleston. charleston. >> happening today nfl star quarterback tom brady will face off with envelope commissioner roger goodell. brady was suspended four games and the patriots were fined a million dollars and docked a pair of draft picks. the patriots say that's fine we're not fighting it but brady s a special investigator for the league found that the super bowl champs illegally used underinflated footballs in the afc title game. brady has denied knowing about it or being involved. >> ♪♪ >> "action news" anchor brian taff is in rome this morning for a big announcement. it's related to september's world meeting of families and visit by pope francis to

course near kansas city. a massive sinkhole opened up fittingly on the unlucky 13th fairway. heavy rain may be to blame and it doesn't help that the course itself is built on a limestone mine. but the golfers actually say it's kind of fun playing around the hazard but if you lose a ball in there i don't think you're getting in. >> no. >> word of the day is heat. >> yeah, right. hot humid conditions across the region and the chance of an afternoon thunderstorm. storm tracker six shows we're starting out the day dry. as we take that look outside early on your tuesday morning you can see the camera shaking around a little bit down the shore as there's a bit of a breeze along the boardwalk in atlantic city and everybody's starting out warm and on the muggy side this morning. temperature currently in philadelphia 77 degrees. your dewpoint all the way up to 69. so, it's even a little stickier this morning than it was yesterday morning. winds out of the south at 3 miles per hour. and it does look like the heat and humidity are part of the package today. along with that, we also have that chance of thunderstorms. now, as we go through the

morning we'll probably see a sun and clouds mix. we'll stay dry although it will be feeling very humid and uncomfortable. we get up to 3 o'clock and we'll be on the lookout for a couple of little pop-up showers to the north and west. we'll allow for something popping as soon as 3 o'clock but i think the better chance is probably 4 o'clock and 5 o'clock as the northern and western suburbs see a lot of these showers and thunderstorms beginning to build in and where these thunderstorms hit even though they won't be everywhere they do have the chance of producing strong damaging winds. more on that in a second. by 7 o'clock some of these storms still around philadelphia beginning to push farther into south jersey. and then by 8, 9 o'clock it looks like they'll be centered mainly over south jersey and delaware and down by the shore. look at this guy here. that's going to be a real strong storm. by about 10, 11 o'clock most of this is getting out of here. we have several possible threats from this. the main thing would be strong gusty winds perhaps as high as 60 miles an hour. the storm prediction center has our area in the orange area which is a pretty

moderate chance for this being a problem. it doesn't mean everybody in this orange area gets it but it means we're all in line for that it. slight chance some of these storms produce hail and from philadelphia up into the northern and western suburbs an isolated tornado can't be ruled out. we're in a risk category for that. so, as those storms come through later dan this evening, do take cover from them indoors in the lower floors. the other part of the story is the heat building. 79 by 8 o'clock, 88 by 11 o'clock. 95 is your high around 3 o'clock this afternoon and it's going to be oppressively humid until that front comes through late today and starts to push that humidity down again. 95 the high in philadelphia and wilmington. down the shore well into the 80's. we also have rip currents as a possibility in the shore so even though you're not getting rain until perhaps this evening you got to be careful and only swim near lifeguards. hot and humid conditions across the region and little up close and personal view down the shore looks like upper 80's just about everywhere. we're up into the 70's in the

about with the with the downed pole. hick is it particular 724 as your alternate. somebody stuck on the side of the road in upper merion so watch for a disabled vehicle north gulph road at first avenue. nydia. >> karen thank you. overnight hip hop music mogul diddy was released from a los angeles county jail. he posted $50,000 bail following his arrest for alleged assault. police say diddy used a weight room kettlebell. the victim is expected to be okay. what led up to the incident has not been announced by police. diddy's son is on ucla's football team. >> authorities in canada are investigating a video that shows a man jumping on a moose and briefly riding the animal. don't think the moose liked. that the video is believed to have been taken in northern british. a hunter contacted conservation officers. those officers say it's obvious that moose is being harassed. under the british columbia

. >> crews rescued a worker trapped in thick mud in north jersey. the pse&g worker was stuck in mud so deep in north arlington that two workers had to dig with their hands to free the worker's torso then his legs. once his legs were freed he was put on a gurney and was slid across the rest of the mud to an emergency vehicle. floss word at this time on exactly how or why the worker ended up getting stuck. he was not seriously hurt. >> a man's fishing trip turned into a rare catch in burlington county. ron rossi showed "action news" this pacu fish he caught in swedes lake yesterday. rossi had to look online to figure out what kind of fish this actually is. it's actually a fish that is native to south america. it's related to the pir ran a teddy roosevelt declared it to be delicious. whereas the piranha will tear you apart the pacu might just nibble your fingers a bit. they're ending up in rivers and other place ices because people buy them, they're little they get huge and people let them loose.
