>> and accuweather is tracking oppressive heat and humidity and the threat of a severe storm coming later today. so let's go right on out to dave murphy, he's got more on that and karen rogers is taking a look at traffic. good morning. >> well certainly starting out a little warm and muggy and later this morning and this afternoon oppressive heat on the way as you mentioned. take a look a heat advisory has been posted by the national weather service. it officially kicks in at 11 o'clock this morning and goes all the way until 6 o'clock this evening and it covers the central portion of the region you see highlighted in orange. the biggest concern is urban centers where there's a lot of concrete and asphalt to radiate the heat from that sun and in those places the heat index will make it feel like about 100 degrees this afternoon with high temperatures getting well into the 90's. so, cool drinks all around this afternoon. take it easy and wear the appropriate loose fitting clothing and light colored clothing if you're going to be outside toiling or playing. there is a line of thunderstorms that's north of pittsburgh slowly pushing its way in our direction and as we get later into the afternoon

and evening starting in the northern and western suburbs and ending up down the shore we'll see potentially strong gusty strong thunderstorms. 77 degrees and muggy right now in philadelphia, 75 wilmington, 68 in allentown 75 in sea isle city and when i say muggy i'm almost under selling sit. look at the dewpoints. in a lot of cases including philadelphia those dewpoint numbers are up over 70 degrees and when you get to 70 or better, that means oppressive humidity especially as the sun gets higher so do look for it to be sticky today. temperatures are going to rise. by noon, 91. your high is 95 degrees today at 3 o'clock with that heat indemocrats around 100 and again during the afternoon and evening, strong gusty thunderstorms are possible. i'll talk more about those storms and show them to you on future tracker six coming up. early on no rain so karen no problems on the roads? >> that's not always the way that works. it would be nice if it d but hey, no problems on the schuylkill. we're looking good. this is the schuylkill at projecting university avenue and we see no issues right here this morning. you're looking good between the walt whitman bridge and the vine street expressway.

but the action cam is on the scene of our breaking news. these fire hydrants that are just blowing water all across the roadway here in southwest philadelphia. , see the flooding that's happening right now. this is holstein avenue and 78th street and watch as that water just kind of pools all over the side of the road. police are blocking at least one direction of this. what you want to do is stick to essington or island avenue and 76th street to avoid the problem on holstein avenue at 78th street. police on the scene stopping traffic in at least one direction there on holstein avenue. i want to go back to the maps right here. we've got another problem that just cleared on roosevelt boulevard southbound at mascher street. we had an accident with only one lane getting by. it's moving better now t an accident involving a tractor-trailer just cleared in west norriton on the boulevard at the general so traffic here moving a little better. in north coventry township a downed pole causing a problem from an earlier accident. it had shut 422 down in both directions. they've reopened eastbound but westbound is still closed between route 100 and 662.

stick to 724 as your alternate tam. >> thank you, karen. and philadelphia police are looking for the driver who they say struck a man late last night and then fled. "action news" reporter katherine scott is live in north philadelphia with new details from overnight in that investigation. good morning katherine. >> reporter: good morning tam. and the victim remains at the hospital in critical condition. investigators here at the accident investigation district are heading up the search for the driver. this happened around 10:15 last night in hunting park. police were called out to the 600 block of erie avenue and when they arrived they found a 40-year-old man. he had been on his bike when he was struck. the vehicle had fled. he was rushed to temple university hospital in critical condition. police soon located the vehicle, a ford f-150. it did have some front end damage but the search continues for the driver. police haven't said yet if they know who they're looking for. there are some surveillance cameras near the accident scene but police haven't yet told us if there's any footage

that can help in the investigation. but if you have any tips, police want the hear from you. we're live in north philadelphia, katherine scott channel6 "action news." >> katherine, thank you. three people were hurt when an suv slammed into a home in philadelphia's rhawnhurst section. apparently pinning someone inside the house underneath the vehicle. police say a 24-year-old woman hit another car head on yesterday. then went up a handicapped ramp and right through the door of the home. a 19-year-old woman with autism and her caretaker were inside the house. mark was riding in the back seat of the car that was hit. he says he found the caretaker pinned underneath the suv. >> these two men are trying to get her out. she says help, help. so they couldn't move these bricks and i was able to -- i got some surge of energy and i was able to move these boulders. >> thank goodness. now, the caretaker, the teen and the driver of the suv are all in stable condition. while police have ruled out intoxication, they still don't

have a clear picture from the driver as to why she lost control of her jeep. a pleasantville man arrested accused of robbing several hotels in atlantic county, new jersey. police arrested emanuel heath yesterday after responding to an attempted robbery at the comfort inn suites in egg harbor township. police found a gun and ski mask that link heath to two other robberies that occurred in the the last two weeks. >> a lot of eyes on greece. so far markets like what they're hearing. let's go to maribel aber live at the nasdaq if times square. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you tam. stocks rose on hopes of a potential deal between greece and its lenders and the nasdaq closed at a record high. futures pointing to a you here open. reports on durable goods and new home sales out later today. the number of first time buyers picking up. first timers the accounted for almost a third of existing homes last month. the largest share since september 2012. the increase in first time

buyers is attributed to the stronger labor market. the next generation of the apple watch could feature a camera and better why if i. that's the prediction from the web site nine to five mac. a front facing camera on the watch would allow for low resolution streaming video for chatting. it may open up a possibility of taking pictures and shooting video from your wrist. i don't know, tam, think that could be the next big thing shooting video from your wrist? >> i want to get back to the koda chrome, can we do that maribel? probably not. [laughter] >> all right, thank you maribel. a tornado touched down in northern illinois and dozens of homes and businesses are caught up in the fury. erin o'hearn is live in the satellite center. she's got more on what's going on. good morning, erin. >> reporter: good morning, tam. wicked weather in the midwest. we now know that at least seven people have been injured after severe storms spawned at least one tornado across the northern part of the state. now, the national weather service has confirmed the twisters touched down in cold

city which is a community of about 5,000 people. several homes were damaged as the storms ripped through the chicago area last night. there are also reports of downed power lines throughout the area natural gas leaks to many homes and heavy flooding that made much of the area impassable. now, take a listen to one resident as he describes the moment the tornado struck. >> only safe spot was in the back bedroom. that's the bedroom where she was. looking down the main hallway down the trailering see the tree branches inside the trailer. >> reporter: scary moments there. there was also severe storm damage in sublet where there were reports of multiple people trapped at a camp site and mobile home complex. there was one person who was seriously injured hadn't to be taken to a hospital. others were treated at the scene. now, the storms continue to move east and as david has been saying we're going to be seeing some of that severe weather in our area later this afternoon and this evening. of course we'll keep you

updated on 6abc and 6abc.com. for now we're live in the satellite center, erin o'hearn, channel6 "action news." back to you. >> thank you erin. you're tracking all of it. >> two weather issues around here. the first is the oppressive heat and humidity. that will be what affects most people for most of the day and then later this afternoon and this evening the chance of some of those strong storms coming through. storm tracker six live double scan shows us that we're dry over land across the region right now, though. taking a look outside, some hazy sunshine beginning to build over the airport and it really feels sticky out there. i know i felt it a little bit on the sticky side yesterday when you walked outside in the morning but it feels even worse today. 77 degrees right now in philadelphia. 68 in allentown. 75 in wilmington. 74 in trenton. and 73-degree readings down the shore at this early hour. dewpoints are up there though and you definitely feel muggy especially if the sun is hitting you and you're starting to motor around a little bit. as we take a look at sky cover, looks like sun mixes with clouds through most of the day. by 3 o'clock most of our shower activity is off to the north and west. watch what happens between

3 o'clock and about 5 o'clock. almost instantly you see all of these showers and thunderstorms beginning to pop up. obviously these are little bit on the spotty side. not everybody necessarily sees them but where you do you're going to get issues, obviously drenching downpours would be part of that and sometimes when you get the drenchers you can also transfer stronger winds from aloft down to the surface and we have a concern about wind damage out there as well. so, this is what it looks like at 5:00 it's mostly the northern and western suburbs through philadelphia by 7:00 some of these are still plowing through the city perhaps a little bit of action up north and west. by 9 o'clock looks like most of this will be shifting toward the shore and then hopefully by about 11:00 or so it will be pretty much dying down and getting off the shore but we are looking at several issues with this, the main ones would be lightning downpours obviously, you can kind of see that from looking at the model but also strong wind gusts. these could be strong enough straight line wind gusts that could produce problems with downed trees and wires maybe some property damage. of course not everybody sees these but where you do, you do want to head indoors on the lower floors because of the

potential impact of those winds. also could see some large hail from a couple of these storms and while i'm marking tornadoes as a low chance, there's actually -- it's not out of the question that we would see an isolated tornado mixed in with some of these storms. i think the better chance of that is probably up in new england but we can't rule it out here. so again indoors lower floors if you see lightning and hear the thunder later today and tonight. up in allentown, hot and humid, an afternoon thunderstorm can't be ruled out. 91 is your forecast high. when it's not stormy it's definitely uncomfortable and you want to wear that light colored loose fitting clothing and drink a lot of water or sports drinks if you'll be outside. down the shore a late thunderstorm at evening and at night. 89 degrees is the high on the beach in atlantic city. there is an issue with rip currents today, so if you're going to be swimming, and i know it's hot and humid and you're going to want to get in there make sure you only swim in front of the lifeguards. listen to what they're telling you. hot and humid today in philadelphia, afternoon storms a part of the package an high of 95 with that heat index

making it feel like it's about a hundred at the height of the heating. here's are the numbers are going to go. 79 i 8 o'clock, 88 by 11 o'clock, 94 by 2 o'clock with our high of 95 striking at about 3 o'clock this afternoon. as we take a look at your exclusive accuweather 7-day forecast, things do get better in a hurry. today 95, hot steamy. those storms certainly an issue into the evening. but then tomorrow sunny and nicer, a high of 87. lower humidity. nice for the union match at ppl park in the evening. and then on thursday, 84, sun mixing with clouds. there is the chance of an afternoon shower or thunderstorm. we're hoping it holds off until after our parade of spare -- parade of sail special at 2 o'clock gets under way and gets over. of course we're welcoming the tall slips into philadelphia. chance of a slight pop-up shower in the afternoon or evening. friday looks a little gray and rainy. the weekend though, low 70's again and a little rain saturday night into sunday morning. >> not bad. >> uh-huh. >> thank you, david. >> yeah. >> 6:12 now. coming up more stories you didn't see last night. we are learning more about the top notch musician whose are

>> ♪♪ >> welcome back. you're taking a live look down the shore into atlantic city. beautiful coastal blues there but everything is just going to feel like blazing red and yellow today the colors of fire. as we get into some really high temperatures. it's 6:16, 77 degrees out there right now. >> all right, let's go to karen rogers with traffic. a few problems out there. >> yeah, we've got a new one and it's a big one coming in to us right now on the northeast extension, we've got a new accident blocking the northeast extension northbound here. so all lanes blocked on the northeast extension between quakertown and lehigh valley. exit 44 and 56. stick to 309 as your alternate instead of the northeast exhe knows the. northeast extension shut down northbound. if you're heading northbound

stick to 309. it's shut down between quakertown and lehigh valley. a new accident coming in to us right now. a problem with a downed pole because of an earlier accident here in chester county. north coventry township 422 westbound still blocked between route hundred and 662. stick to 724 as your alternate and you see those slow speeds on 422 about 28 miles an hour in that area here. we also want to mention that on holstein avenue near 78th street in southwest philadelphia we've been talking about the fire hydrants causing huge problems with two fire hydrants blowing water all over the roadway but that has since been cleared. they were able to shut off the hydrants. traffic moving better. i-95 at girard southbound traffic headed towards center city pretty heavy from allegheny to girard so watch for that one on i-95 and a new accident coming in to us in new jersey. this is salem county right on the turnpike northbound. this is at exit number one watch for this accident. this is just off of the delaware memorial bridge. and don't forget you can get all the traffic with the #6abc traffic.
