power for 500,000 stranding an amtrak train between pennsylvania and new york and abc's tom llamas is in washington township new jersey this morning. tom, good morning. >> reporter: david, good morning to you. this is the dangerous situation some are waking up to in the northeast. right next to me a 50-foot maple tree that came do you know in the storm. that's what residents told me it shook. the power line look at this everywhere on the street hanging from the trees and some are so scared they're not even leaving their driveway this morning. >> this is a tornado. >> reporter: overnight violent storms striking the east coast. and a nightmare for more than 100 amtrak passengers bound for new york city stuck on the tracks for hours after a transformer exploded in the heavy winds. >> the power went out on the train, the lights went out and said you'll stay on this train and the other train is just going to push this one all the way into philadelphia. >> frustrated passengers taking to social media after no power

and no lights one tweeting "trapped amtrak. 654 from harrisburg to new york penn. no air, no food car. tornado sirens for five hours no explanation." all this as power lines snapped in half with wins reaching 70 miles per hour. >> i grabbed my kids and ran in the basement. >> reporter: this morning, nearly 500,000 people left in the dark. >> i never seen anything like this. >> reporter: in new jersey heavy winds flipped this car over. parts of the shopping center severely damaged. >> it was crazy winds. they were coming straight down the street. >> reporter: across pennsylvania trees uprooted some ending up in houses. >> i came up and looked out the door and i couldn't believe what i saw. >> reporter: her car and home destroyed and check out this lightning flashing behind our capitol as those storms reached the east coast. and now this morning, the cleanup begins. and we have an update on those amtrak passengers. they were supposed to arrive at 8:15. they didn't get there till 1:30

in the morning. as for this neighborhood you can see power lines are down. no power here. being told it could be two to three days and, robin, with this warm weather that's going to get really old really fast. >> it certainly will tom. thank you. we're drying out in the northeast but hard hit areas in the midwest under threat of severe weather yet again. >> eastern iowa central illinois where we're focused. that low east of the rockies has a warm front attached and that's what's going to lift the storm, will are is. see rounds of thunderstorms some of which could be heavy and severe at times so we'll take the computer model. put it through and you can see dry for part of the day but it's after dinnertime from des moines over to peoria is the region that we are putting right in that elevated risk area for severe storms. yes, there is a tornado threat but i think the damaging wind could potentially become bigger. we keep that slight risk all the way back to rapid city includes sioux falls and des moines. flood watch also because there's going to be a lot of rain with

the storms places that have already been inundated chicago included in a flash flood watch now in that part of the country can't get a break. now to the hunt for those escaped killers. new details coming in about how they broke out of prison. the worker charged with helping them admitted to smuggling tools into the prison in the hamburger meat. abc news learned joyce mitchell is being investigated for possible relationships, as well with other prisoners and abc's linzie janis is in owls head, new york, with the latest. linzie good morning. >> reporter: on day 19 of this manhunt, roughly a thousand armed officers not letting up on their search and the district attorney telling me more about joyce mitchell's role in that brazen prison break. this morning, sources telling abc news authorities are investigating whether joyce mitchell had sex with inmates other than richard matt and david sweat while working at the prison. this despite lyle mitchell's claims his wife told him she didn't sleep with either of the convicted killers. also saying his wife is now

convinced if she had shown up to be their getaway driver as they'd alleged lay planned she would have been killed. also this morning, abc news learning how mitchell helped them escape. >> joyce mitchell advised us she had taken the hacksaw blades some of the other tools, the screwdriver bit, placed them into hamburger and then put it into a refrigerator freezer in the tailor room and a correction officer would come in collect that and then bring it into inmate matt. >> reporter: the district attorney telling us that officer is gene palmer. did you have anything to do with their escape? >> no comment at this time but i'm here on my own free will to assist. >> reporter: he guarded them daily. his lawyer now saying he didn't know about the tools even passing a polygraph test. >> he did not knowingly help these two people escape from prison but they did take advantage of people. >> this is my friend ricky matt right here.

robin. while pressure is mounting across the country from major retailers to stop selling the confederate flag here at the state capitol, the senior pastor who was also a state senator killed in the massacre will lie in state here today. this morning, a look at the moment police close in on the most wanted man in america. >> confirmed it is the suspect from the charleston shooting. >> reporter: approaching the car guns drawn after receiving a tip from a local flower shop worker who said she followed a man who looked like the charleston killer driving a car with the license plate with the seal confederate states of america. her friend called police. >> it has those, you know weird circle tall on the front she said and the boy has a bowl looking haircut he was put in a police cruiser. >> i'm en route to the pd with that subject. >> reporter: officers celebrating with fist buffers and high-fives but it's these pictures of roof proudly displaying confederate images that renewed the decades long debate about this contentious

symbol. tuesday, the south carolina senate and house voting overwhelmingly in favor of discussing the removal of the same flag that once flew above the state's capitol dome before it was moved to its current location on grounds. but some refuse to revisit the issue. >> that issue has been settled. it was settled in compromise. the flag was moved from the dome to there. that's that. settled. >> reporter: but sometimes things have to be revisited, right? >> listen when the legislature took this up and settled it it was settled in my book okay. thank you so much. >> reporter: thank you while the representative walked away defiant, change already happening elsewhere. virginia's governor announcing tuesday he's ordering the confederate emblem from the state issued license plates be removed. and major retailers like target now adding its name to the list along with etsy amazon target ebay and sears all saying they'll ban the sale of the flag and its image. nascar says it backs the

governor of south carolina's call to take this flag down. >> we appreciate it. we turn to a major change from the white house this morning. the obama administration set to announce a shift in policy now on americans taken hostage overseas. including a woman who gave birth now being held hostage now allowing families to pay ransoms without the fear of prosecution. abc's chief investigative correspondent brian ross in washington with more on the story. brian, good morning. >> reporter: well good morning, david. this policy review was triggered by the anger of hostage families who claim the white house failed them and their children. the policy shift comes as this american woman, 30-year-old caitlin coleman of pennsylvania is still being held hostage by the taliban in pakistan. she was last seen in this video with her husband by her side revealing she had given birth since being kidnapped in 2012. >> i would ask that my family and my government do everything that they can to bring my husband, child and i to safety

and freedom. >> reporter: under the new policy the u.s. would not threaten her parents with prosecution if they tried to raise money to pay a ransom as other parents say they were. >> they're making clear they will not prosecute family mens who try to raise ransom payments and they will actually help facilitate communication between family members and hostagetakers. >> reporter: officials say the change comes in the wake of what happened in the case of hostage james foley. while isis was threatening him with death, his parents say a white house official was threatening them with prosecution if they tried to raise a ransom for his freedom. >> it just made me realize that these folks talking to us had no idea what it was like to be the family of a kidnapped american. >> reporter: the foleys and the parents of the five other americans killed while being held hostage since last august are scheduled to meet this morning at the white house with president obama, david. >> brian, these families have been through so much. you can certainly understand why they would want to pay the ransom.

william connole was walking blocks from his home when he was shot and killed. >> there's a male lying on the sidewalk not breathing. players bracing for a new trial. a tennessee judge throwing out their rape convictions after learning one of the jurors failed to reveal he himself was a sexual assault victim. >> that was sort of inkonscons ken tall at this in the in my life. >> reporter: he wrote juror number 9 had in fact concealed information. our system of justice cannot tolerate a trial with a tainted juror. >> we're basically going back to square one now. as if they had been charged, they're presumed innocent and the process moves forward. >> we the jury find the defendant cory lamont batey guilty. >> reporter: in a case that shook the university brandon vandenburg and cory batey were convicted of aggravated rape and other charges accused of bringing an unconscious student to vandenburg's room after a

night of heavy drinking in june of 2013 where she was sexually assaulted. they took cell phone pictures and video of the assault allegedly. the two were convicted after just three hours of deliberations. the juror in question saying he voted strictly based on the evidence. >> this blows your mind how graphic and depraved it is. >> reporter: now with the convictions overturned, that juror tells abc news he stands by his original statement that he neither lied nor intention intentionally misrepresented himself during the jury selection process. and that he has immense remorse about the impact this is having on the victim. now, there's a bond hearing later this morning to determine whether the defendants will be released while they wait for a new trial. legal experts tell us they will likely be released from jail and their bail set at $350,000 each will be reinstated. >> hey, we'll have so much more from the jury foreman and more

threatening u.s. assistant coach sal alosi with a kettlebell but overnight combs' rep telling abc news "any actions taken by mr. combs were solely defensive in nature to protect himself and his son." a source familiar with combs' account of the situation tells abc news that after justin's coach reportedly sent him home from practice diddy went to talk to alosi without security or an entourage. the source saying alosi didn't want to talk and that when things got tense, combs went to call police but instead alosi tried to grab the phone from combs. that's when the source says other people saw what was happening and ran into the room saying combs mixed up a kettlebell and held it it in front of his face as protection. espn's shelly smith says it happened after an intense training workout monday. >> was justin combs kicked out of their workout. >> reporter: sal was berating him for being lazy and not

and make sure that you do not scold a child for telling the truth if you keep scolding them then they're not going to come to you and finally teach them to do a little bit of a gut check if the words that are coming out of your mouth make you feel like a dizzy in the head, hot in the face and pit in your stomach you probably are going down the wrong path. >> yeah exactly. you know the study indicates that the potential upside to lying include a better verbal memory more creative storytelling. however, there's got to be a way to teach -- >> creative storytelling. >> without encouraging lying? >> right, well your actions speak louder than words. if they see their parents being honest, maybe they returned a wallet they found, kid also pick up on that. to help foster their own creativity with you know plays different games and help you know, show kids a different way than lieing. >> if it's not just grandma's sweater as you point out and this starts to go down a road where you're getting concerned what do you do? >> so when you feel like you

cannot trust what your child is saying that you feel like they're lying all the time this is a time to go to your doctor and seek some professional advice because we want to make sure that our children know the difference between lying and telling the truth. >> it's critical. >> any final word. >> you want to have a little positive reinforcement, as well. talk to your kid, get excited about what they're excited about and don't make them feel their self-worth is tied to a certain thing. if you say you're so smart they may continue to lie about being smart. >> we know that storytelling. we can do storytelling. let's give them a context to do it. make up stories. let your imagination go wild. >> just don't make up a story you did your homework. >> exactly. >> no, no, no the dog ate the homework. hey, you both very great advice appreciate it very much. >> thank you. >> also burring up our "heat index," our series "modern romance" and the new way some people are finding love. it's a dating app called the
