the city of chester was also hard hit, that came down in the street on to a car and another tree landed on this old house on providence road and many homes are left without electricity and traffic lights were out at hundreds of intersections leading to close calls like this one, the path of destruction covered most of the county and many are left wondering if they were hit by a tornado. >> it had to be a torn, i never saw anything like it it was scarey. >> mike watched as his car was buried by a tree. >> it was like the wizard of oz look outside and the tree is just coming over. >> you can imagine how scared the woman that lived here was she was home when the tree came down on the house people are seeking shelter because there is no power in this borough some

people are still being housed at the government complex. david henry channel 6 "action news." >> thank you. entire neighborhoods were damaged across the delaware river in south jersey several roads in the birchs development were blocked by downed trees or power lines the residents never expected the storm to be this severe. >> never seen a storm like this. >> sounded like a freight train was coming through and the roof and everything was shaking and i looked outside and the trees were probably at a 35 to 40 degree angle. >> the entire development is still without power. >> and meanwhile residents in nearby greenwich township woke up to major storm damage the storm tore a roof off a convent while nuns were inside. it it knocks trees in the drive ways and streets and that the

trees were snapping so fast they sounded like gunshots. now we go to meteorologist, adam joseph, with more on this. ever seen anything like this? >> it's been a long time since i have seen a squall line pass through our area like this and so widespread. the best example is when you fly somewhere, think about how high you are in the sky, commercial airlines, 30000 to 35000 feet up these storms towered up to 45,000 feet in the atmosphere and they have wins called updrafts, what comes up must come down and all the wind comes down in the form of down drafts in front of the storm and you get the rush of wind prior to the heavy rain and lightning and add that the speeds yesterday of 45 miles per hour and that is what created the straight line winds that was the wall of win that pushed through most of the heart of the delaware valley.

straight line winds they are the debris that falls in one direction, the trees are all down in the same fashion so to speak. and they with reach speeds of 100 miles per hour, the tornadoes we see in the area sometimes are ef 0's and they are around 65 miles per hour, top wind gust fz philadelphia 72 miles per hour, that is the fourth strongest wind gust ever recorded at the airport. the strongest was 94 miles per hour back in 1954 with hurricane hazel. temperatures better today upper 70s to low 80s around the region and comfortable humidity however this little break sharrie from the active weather, not going to last all that long, we have a couple of rounds of rain to speak of and we could see inches of rain by the weekend and we'll have the numbers coming up in ac weather. >> adam thanks.

meantime parts of camden county, took a big hit from the storm, sara bloomquist is live from cherry hill, and residents are in cleanup mode as well. >> hi there sharrie, you can see behind me a common sight in the cherry hill neighborhood another snapped in half in the neighbor's front yard, look at this tree uprooted and tossed across the sidewalk you can see the path in the street all the wires down and a transformer in that neighbor's driveway and a pole snapped right in half, this was some summer storm that blew through here last night and now neighbors are left to deal with the aftermath. >> street after street tree after tree, down along the sidewalks and down along sidewalks. >> this is a huge catastrophe we have no electricity and i don't know when we'll get it back but the rest of the neighborhood is pretty bad too.
