abc's steve osunsami is on the scene in greelyville, south carolina good morning, steve. >> reporter: good morning. we drove through the night to get here and when we arrived you could still smell the fumes, investigators are in the building searching for clues, the fire department is here. they're taking a good look at the roof to see what happened. this morning, federal investigators are here in rural south carolina trying to determine if what burned this historic black church was an act of man or an act of god. by 8:30 last night the mt. zion ame church in greelyville was already in flames and giant clouds of smoke were filling the sky. the flames shooting from the roof were so intense they needed 50 firefighters to fight them. it took more than two hours to quiet the fire no one was injured. authorities haven't said what started the flames but they're not ruling out lightning from thunderstorms that started rolling through around 6:00 last night. but why are black churches burning? this is now the seventh to go down in fire since the deadly

shooting at charleston's emanuel ame church two weeks ago, about 60 miles away. >> the baptist church on briar creek road right before central is on fire. >> reporter: the fbi is now investigating fires at black churches dear to black families across five southern states including this one in north carolina that burned last week. >> just seeing the flames just up in the air, that had me terrified. >> reporter: charlotte authorities say that fire was no accident. saying this is clearly arson. for mt. zion many believe history is repeating itself having burned to the ground earlier. president clinton helped them celebrate after they rebuilt a year later and condemned the attacks. >> i will do everything i can to prosecute those responsible for the rash of church burnings. >> reporter: the families here have to rebuild again as black churches across the country worry that they may be under attack. more federal agents are arriving

this morning. leaders from the ame church nationwide are meeting in new orleans today and are expected to address the church burnings. george. >> we can only pray it was not arson. >> that's right. you were there in charleston. you covered the fire. >> my first year reporting in 1995 and clinton coming in '96 but this is a community that has been through so much already and there was a series of church fires back then and the kkk incited two young teenagers to burn them to the ground and got life in prison but so much healing taking place and now to see this happen again is eerie. >> it's not certain right now. ginger there were thunderstorms in the area at that time. >> absolutely. we took the radar and just broke it down. you can see greelyville right here on the map. this is at 6:00 p.m. last night. so all of that lightning is west of them and from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. there are hundreds if not thousands of lightning strikes so could have been lightning. we're watching that storm from 7:00 to 8:00 move on out and i

think it was reported just after 8:30 is what steve was saying so potential and we will keep an eye on that. all the data here and more than 275 storm reports from california all the way up here to the northeast. this morning, severe storms rocking millions of us from coast to coast. winds up to 75 miles per hour with flooding rain rocketing through the northeast. ominous clouds swirling over pennsylvania. folks spotting funnel clouds from west chester to bath. the storms downing trees and ripping the roof off this house. in florida, a waterspout sending debris flying. sheets of rain drenching the nation's capital. lightning illuminating the night sky. earlier tuesday, pounding hail in north dakota. flash flooding stranding drivers from louisiana to texas. and near dallas lightning setting this house on fire. >> definitely sounded like an

explosion because everybody in the neighborhood heard it. >> reporter: even on the west coast lightning sparking this fire in san diego and closing beaches near los angeles. this as much of california and many out west endure extreme heat. the severe weather threat today centers itself from kansas city to birmingham. damaging winds and certainly hail. remember the lightning is always in there and even flash flooding in that region. then the heat advisories we could see record highs from redding to medford. fire danger is very high you guys, all the way up into the pacific northwest. so we're watching all of these headlines this morning. >> a lot of hundreds up there. thanks. we turn to the latest batch of hillary clinton e-mails. nearly 2,000 from her time as secretary of state released overnight revealing new details about the daily life of a top diplomat flashes of personality too and jim avila has the story. >> reporter: good morning. think about it what would our e-mails reveal about us and hillary clinton's case no bombshells in this batch of nearly 2,000 released overnight. instead an inside peek at the

life of the secretary of state, flashes of ego, a tinge of car sam and, of course lots of kissing up from colleagues. the newly released e-mails, a small portion of 55,000 pages, with more e-mails released every 30 days ordered by a judge until three days before the iowa caucus, guaranteeing a slow drip of revelations dogging her primary campaign. >> i have said repeatedly i want those e-mails out. nobody has a bigger interest in getting them released than i do. >> reporter: many of the e-mails mundane, the business of running a vast government agency from scheduling meetings to lists of phone calls with foreign dignitaries, clinton even writing seemingly saarrcastic in one "you know how much i love making calls." but some reveal a bit of personality. in one clinton fighting with her fax machine "i thought it was supposed to be off the hook to work." in another she seems unaware of a cabinet meeting and worried.

i heard on the radio there is a cabinet meeting. can i go? there is a redacted e-mail titled own the hamptons requesting iced tea and one loving a chinese carpet. former president jimmy carter urging no agreement on a hostage release. and controversial longtime confidant sidney blumenthal barred by the white house from working for her at the state department advising her on numerous foreign policy issues. the white house apparently knew mrs. clinton had a special e-mail high ranking staff from rahm emanuel to political director david axelrod couldn't find the e-mail in the government directory and had to ask her assistant to provide it. george. >> okay jim, thanks very much. >> okay george. now new details on the fallout from that prison break in upstate new york. 12 prison executives and workers have been placed on leave including the superintendent. as we learn more from david

sweat about how he and richard matt broke out of the prison and how close they came to being captured. abc's linzie linziejinzlinzie janis in malone. >> reporter: it came as david sweat revealed that he and richard matt planned it for months and came close to being captured earlier in the manhunt. state investigators trying to figure out how richard matt and david sweat got away with their brazen escape. sweat speaking to police from his hospital bed revealing he and matt were cutting holes in their cells and exploring the prison tunnels for six months. >> during that time period he was out in the catwalk area down in the lower level walking around in the tunnel system of the facility. >> reporter: the two inmates even conducting a dry run the night before they broke out making it all the way to that manhole about a block from the prison. also this morning, sweat revealing how he and matt

managed to elude an army of over a thousand law enforcement officials searching those dense woods. by using a transistor radio to track news reports on the man manhunt but telling police there were a couple of close calls. >> sweat talks about at least one occasion where the law enforcement officers were in very close proximity to him being up in a tree stand. >> reporter: and another when a group of hunters came dangerously close. >> he talks about three people coming to a camp sweat and matt were in very close proximity to these three people and they remained under cover. didn't have any contact. >> reporter: sweat also telling authorities he never engaged in a sexual relationship with prison employee joyce mitchell. saying he had little involvement with her in the months leading up to the escape. now, sweat was shot once in each shoulder. he's expected to spend at least a few more days in the hospital before being transported to

another maximum security prison where he will likely spend 23 hours a day in his cell. george. >> taking no chances, okay thanks. we turn to pretty shocking new video raising questions about safety in the sky. two airline pilots fired for inviting a model into the cockpit to take selfies and video and guide the plane's throttle. abc's aviation correspondent david kerley has the story. good morning, david. >> reporter: george this one is disturbing. the pilots fired. the model banned from the airline for five years. she was in the cockpit during the critical points of flight. the question this morning, could this happen in the u.s.? what you're about to see for any traveler around the world could be described as frightening. [ speaking a foreign language ] >> reporter: that is an actress model in the cockpit of a commuter jetliner as it taxis to the runway in argentina. watch as the pilots ask her if she wants to help increase the speed. she puts her hand on the throttle as the pilots put on the power for takeoff. even a squeal from the model as they become airborne.

and if that wasn't enough, selfies with the pilots with their backs to the controls. >> she should have never been in the cockpit in the first place. stupid to be taking selfies. you know you don't want your taxi driver texting while you're driving. so you don't want your airline pilot to take selfies while you're airborne. >> reporter: even the landing videotaped as she lets out a sound as pilots approach the runway. the next day, the pilots fired from the argentinean airline, the model banned for five years from that airline. the faa here in the u.s. has strict rules about all of this. >> the level of professionalism in u.s. pilots is so far beyond this it's highly unlikely something like this would happen in the u.s. >> reporter: now the airline wants to take this a step further. they are suggesting that both pilots and also the model be prosecuted for endangering flight safety. george. >> that makes sense, okay david, thanks very much. to amy with today's other top stories.

another major attack isis taking -- claiming credit. >> we are just getting word isis fighters have claimed responsibility for a series of attacks on army checkpoints in egypt that have left as many as 60 egyptian soldiers killed. the attacks come just days after attacks in tunisia and kuwait last week. government officials now say the man who opened fire at that hotel in tunisia was trained in libya. also breaking overnight stunning new images from that military plane crash in indonesia. at least 141 people are now confirmed dead. the transport plane was authorized to carry troops and their families but investigators are looking into whether paying customers were illegally on board. and back here at home security questions are being raised after a man was able to climb the brooklyn bridge and take this selfie from an area off-limits to the public of the he managed to do it even though the city is on high alert ahead of the july 4th weekend, the nypd insists there was no security threat but follows a string of recent incidents

through this to find out your name? >> reporter: chris connelly, abc news, new york. >> i wish them all the best. i really do. >> a little more on that later. but now we turn to an abc news exclusive. that north carolina father attacked by a shark over the weekend, he's speaking out mr. how he fought the shark off punching it several times to protect his 8-year-old son and matt gutman has the story. good morning, matt. >> reporter: i don't think we've ever heard a story quite like this one. patrick thornton nearly 50 years old attacked by a shark so he decides to go into hand to fin combat with it and when he thinks it's threatening his 8-year-old he goes in for a second round. that is all of the shark attacks piling up on north carolina beaches. >> all of a sudden i saw a fin. >> reporter: this morning 47-year-old patrick thornton describing the moment his beach vacation turned into a fight for his life. >> a wave came over and splashed on top of us and i turned my body so my back was to the waves

and then i felt a tug at my foot. >> reporter: thornton speaking exclusive exclusively was with his young son, niece and nephew coming face to fin with a shark while swimming in the shallow waters of avon beach on north carolina's ouber banks. >> it took a pretty big chunk out of my right leg so i started punching the shark and then it grabbed my back must have bit me in the back. >> reporter: somehow he managed to get the shark off him. his niece and nephew made it to shore but his son jack stayed in the water paralyzed with fear. >> i ran over and grabbed jack and as i was bringing him to the shore, the shark came and bit me again in the back and this time he bit me really really hard. >> reporter: so he pumped the shark again. >> kind of punched down and i think i had two hands right where i hit off of it. >> reporter: finally it swam off. >> we have a 47-year-old male

patient that has multiple puncture wounds. >> reporter: once on shore thornton was rushed to the er. suffering wounds to his right leg and deep punctures to his back. according to experts, if a shark attacks, use whatever you can to fight back. as i recently learned testing the shark infested waters off the bahamas. >> the best thing for me right now is fending them off with my feet. all you can do is fight and let them know i'm not going down easy. >> reporter: now, experts respect exactly sure what's causing all of those attacks along north carolina beaches. it could be all of that heat which is drawing fish and, therefore, sharks closer to shore. could be that people are fishing off of piers and jetties like that baiting the sharks but experts say there is a way you can protect yourself. just move down the beach away from piers like this. that way you don't have to go fish to fin with a shark. george, robin. >> path of least resistance. >> that's true. >> makes sense. to ginger right now.

we are back now at 7:42 with a battle over fines and fees for some drivers after failing to pay for their tolls from those highway express lanes, one maryland man claiming he got a bill for more than $10,000. well, now he's suing to recover some of that money. abc's ryan smith is on the road with the story. good morning to you, ryan. >> reporter: good morning, lara. highway express lanes are supposed to make things easier. with e-zpass no more annoying digging for coins but some virginia drivers who forgot to

fill up their accounts lost more than chump change filing a class action lawsuit to recover thousands in penalties. highway express lanes providing faster travel for millions with drivers relying on e-zpass to breeze through tolls but this morning, some of those toll lanes coming under fire. tranceurban, a company that operates those on two major highways in virginia facing a class action lawsuit for allegedly hitting some drivers' wallets with massive fees for unpaid tolls. >> this is highway robbery. >> reporter: kevin stanfield's wife sois one of the plaintiffs. it was linked to her lost credit card which they canceled but when they didn't notify e-zpass with the new credit card information and kept using the express lane the fees piled up. >> i did try to contact tranceurban and say, look let's be reasonable about this. >> reporter: he says he disputed the fees and claims the company then deemed him a repeat

offender slapping him with more penalties, his fees ballooning to over $11,000. >> my reaction was just pure astoundishment total disbelief. >> reporter: trance urban says they not only warn drivers of unpaid tolls but have programs capping fees at $2200. >> what we're looking at today, how to educate folks. >> reporter: tranceurban saying they gave stanfield the opportunity to reduce his administrative fees several times. stanfield eventually settling for $2200. nearly 75 times what he owed in tolls. now he's suing to get that money back. >> i made an honest mistake and it ended up costing me $2200. it's crazy. >> reporter: so how do you avoid huge penalties when you go through those express lanes by accident or if your e-zpass is acting up? tranceurban says they can contact them within the first five days and pay the toll price plus a fee of less than $2.

straight out of the movie "knocked up." >> we're going to have another baby. >> reporter: it's a conversation parents around the world can relate to. whether or not to have another child. but this morning, this stay-at-home mom of two is coming under fire for sharing her story. in an article for elle decor titled "i made a huge sacrifice to buy my dream home" sarah scott chooses a fully loaded luxury home instead of having a third child. certain sacrifices had to be made for this dream to come true for us the first being that we can only afford to have two children. scott then writes about she and her husband's change of heart wanting another child after buying that dream home. my uterus literally aches despite the fact that logic suggests we can't afford it right now. scott writes about additional financial sacrifices that third child would entail that she'd

have to return to teaching and our annual vacation would disappear because we would need to sell the timeshare to make up the difference. the backlash has been fierce with one person commenting you really have no idea how 99% of this country lives, do you? and another telling her, get over your perfectly scripted life. >> having it all is a relative concept to the outside world, this woman appears to have it all but she doesn't feel that way. acceptance of all types of families is the only way that we'll end the parenting wars. >> rebecca joins us now along with ericaka souter our parenting expert. ericka here are a couple more. one woman, valley said no one as shallow as this author should have ever had two children. two is probably too many. denise said it's so disguging in so many ways. boy is it truck a nerve. >> it has but most parents weigh the pros and con, the problem with this essay it shows the

writer is operating in a bubble of wealth. not acknowledging most people in this country, these aren't even problems. most people in the world these aren't even problems so it also sets up a new aspect of the mommy world, the overprivileged mom versus the not so privileged mom and it really alienates her. >> it sure seemed like that. let's get some baseline financial facts down here. what are the costs of an additional child. >> clearly a huge decision a huge responsibility. it goes well beyond the finances but on the financial side of thing, george, right now if you have a child for those first 18 years of life that child will cost you $245,000. now, the interesting thing is once you start having additional children, the cost per child goes down once you have two children the cost per child goes down 25%, when you have three children the cost per child goes down 22% because you can share. there's hand-me-downs involved. the cost of housing is less child care and for many families you can buy in bulk so ends up costing a little less. >> that's just one of many

factors to consider ericka such a personal decision but a lot struggle with the emotional back and forth as well. >> there's some important things to consider. number one, put your complaints in perspective. if you're trying to decide whether to buy a summer home but your neighbors or friends can't afford their mortgage you know hold back on your complaints a little bit. you might also want to try to find people who can relate to your particular struggle. not everyone in your social circle will be able to. find those people who won't be annoyed with those complaints and lastly the most important thing, you're not alone much there are 85 million moms in the united states alone. someone does share your struggle so never feel you're totally alone in your complaints. >> don't necessarily write about it. >> don't write about it, right. >> thank you, guy, both. let's go back to robin. also burning up the "heat index" this morning, standing desks. there's now a growing movement to make them a mainstay in offices all across the country. seas have increased fivefold dr. besser. >> incredible. >> in the reason years and we're taking an in-depth look at whether they work several of

energy during the day because you're moving around and you're going to get less tired then they find if you go from sitting to standing sitting to standing there's less boredom so three benefits right there. >> as you said there's some health benefits but what about the downside? >> well there are some downsides. we know from people who work all day on their feet from cashier, people on assembly lines you can have increased foot pain increased joint pain just from standing all day. you can have swelling of your feet and you also get a risk for varicose veins, let me show you how that works. your heart is pumping blood throughout your body okay and then your veins bring that blood back to your heart. but as they do that there's little valves that keep the blood from flowing backwards. if you're standing all day, those valves can break and can cause swelling in those -- and pooling of the blood and varicose veins in your leg. a risk. >> i always wondered how that broke down like that. very graphic like that. so give us dos and don'ts. >> first thedoepts if you're
