good thursday morning to you all. we start with more severe weather. terror across the mid the of the country overnight. >> at least one tornado confirmed near kansas city missouri. some residents getting an up close view with debris flying around. >> the whole building. >> check that out. it just took the whole building in front of us, y'all. >> it blew out transformers knocking out power to thousands of people. the strong winds blowing off roofs taking down plenty of trees, as well. >> heavy rain and hail lashed the area prompting concerns about flooding. one hospital that lost power during the storm was forced to use generators until service was restored. no injury reports so far in the area. >> take a look at an incredible photo we have the storm looking like something out of a movie just dropping out of the sky. >> that storm system on the move right now coming east and prompting storm and tornado warnings. it moves into the tennessee valley later today. another check on the weather later this half hour.

breaking news now from tennessee. hundreds of people have been evacuated after a train carrying a toxic chemical derailed and caught fire. dozens of residents gathered in the parking lot of a nearby mall. the accident happened just outside knoxville, just the latest in the series of derailments involving trains carrying hazardous chemicals. we'll stay on top of this for you. well as millions of us pack into overcrowded planes in holiday weekend, word that the justice department is looking into whether airlines worked together to limit the number of seats. >> limited seats means higher ticket prices and more profit. abc's bazi kanani following the story for us this morning from washington. bazi, a lot of travelers not going to be pleased to hear this. >> reporter: not at all. good morning. the average price of an airline ticket has risen more than 13% since 2009. but the number of available seats has remained flat. the department of justice wants

to know if that was planned. packed plane, higher fares and ever increasing fees the justice department is now investigating whether those frustrations for travelers are the result of potentially unlawful coordination by what are now the four major airlines united delta, american and southwest controlling 80% of the market after a series of mergers. >> the history of this industry is one of collusion and the department of justice has a responsibility to investigate because it's approved the mergers. >> reporter: u.s. senator richard blumenthal accuses the airlines of illegal signaling each other about how quickly they would add new flights or routes and more seats allegedly encouraging each other to keep capacity low so fares would stay high. the justice department is now demanding the airlines produce statements and decisions from the past two years about the size of their fleets. this morning, the airlines deny the accusation saying through their trade association, it is customers who decide pricing

voting every day with their wall leis on what they value and are willing to pay but with airlines now reporting record profits, many passengers squeezing into those crowded planes with pinched wallets remain skeptical. >> it wouldn't surprise me. i think quite a few things are corrupt in our way of life so that wouldn't surprise me. >> reporter: some industry analysts doubt the investigation will turn up any serious or significant evidence. still, airline stocks fell slightly after the investigation was announced. t.j., reena. >> all right, bazi kanani live for us in washington there, thank you so much. well isis is claiming responsibility for a wave of deadly attacks across egypt which left dozens of soldiers dead after tourists were gunned down at a resort in tunisia. 12 have now been detained in connection with that attack. the wave of vice is prompting new concern about security here at home. especially this july 4th holiday. the defense secretary saying they're keeping a close eye on

calls for attacks via social media media. >> there are self-radical lyzed people on social media. are we concerned about that absolutely we're concerned about it. >> homeland security says there's no specific credible threat but major cities around the country are adding layers of additional security. breaking overnight, new details about last february's plane crash in taiwan that left 43 people dead. investigators now say the pilot on the transasia flight shut down the plane's only working engine by mistake. that pilot is heard on the flight recorder saying wow, pull back the wrong side throttle. just seconds later the plane crashed upside down in a shallow river that was near the tie pay airport. another shark attack is rattling swimmers along the east coast, millions of people head to the beach this holiday weekend. a 68-year-old man is recovering after being bitten several times as he swam in waist deep water in north carolina's outer banks. that's the seventh shark attack

in that state in three weeks and in south carolina 12-year-old boy, he actually survived a shark bite to the leg. >> well the baltimore police department will be installing working video cameras inside all transport vans as part of improved security following the death of freddie gray. he died in april after suffering a severe spinal cord injury while being transported in one of those police vans triggering widespread riots across the city. the van carrying gray did have a camera. it was not working at the time. well donald trump is facing more backlash over his comments about mexican immigrants. macy's is the latest to cut ties with the republican presidential candidate. the retailer plans to phase out the trump men's wear collection saying his remarks are inconsistent with macy's values but trump remains defiant standing by his comments and he is now surging in recent polls climbing to second place behind jeb bush. well impressive show of support for candidate bernie sanders. he delivered a speech in

madison, wisconsin, last night. filling a 10,000-seat arena to capacity. the crowd welcoming sanders' message of income equality with loud cheers. and democratic front runner hillary clinton has raised a staggering $45 million since announcing her candidacy in april. the campaign spokesperson expects final numbers to show clinton raised more primary money than any candidate in history during their first quarter in the race. these been on a whirlwind schedule personally headlining nearly 60 fund-raisers in 18 states. >> the president of the united states called the most powerful person on the planet but still can't stop the rain. he got caught in a driving rainstorm, arrived in nashville and somebody helped him up. it was already open. closed on his head. the president, he's okay. he's just fine. we didn't have to put the 25th amendment into play here. he's just fine but, hey, everybody has to deal with the

jumping in switzerland of course shot by a gopro. the daredevil trained for three years to perform the stunt. he says it's a smallest hole any b.a.s.e. jumper has ever flown through. not going to do that one myself. well across the drought-stricken western u.s. fire crews are fighting 43 large wildfires. one of the newest broke out last night near a state park in riverside county california. numerous fourth of july fireworks celebrations there have been canceled because of the wildfire threat. elsewhere we now know that the fire that forced thousands to evacuate in the city of wenatchee destroyed 29 homes, five more than originally thought. the drought in california is tapping out a major brewery now forcing it to make beer with less water. anheuser-busch spending $20 million to make its facility in van nuys more water efficient. 90% of every budweiser is made of water. takes three bottles to make one bottle of beer. the company is trying to come up with ways to reuse water while
