well good wednesday morning to you. i'm reena ninan. >> i'm ryan smith in for tomorrow holmes. investigators back at the debris field where two planes collided midair. >> one had two people inside. >> the collision raising questions about how something like this could happen. here's abc's bazi kanani with the details. >> we need to get an ambulance. >> reporter: over miles of woods and marshes, tires, engine parts after a horrific midair crash. >> we're getting reports of two planes down. >> reporter: witnesses called for help just after 11:00 a.m. >> sitting there and heard this boom coming from this side. >> reporter: the two planes an f-16 on a training mission out of shaw air force base and a two-set cessna 150 which had been in the air for just minutes before the crash. its two passengers presumed dead.

authorities say the pilot of the f-16 ejected safely parachuting down into a wooded plantation. the coast guard flying in to help seen here lowering a medic to reach the pilot. >> the decision to eject is a quick one, especially in a single seat fighter like an f-16 but in this case he made the appropriate decision based on the fliability of his aircraft. >> reporter: the cessna should have shown up on the fighter jet's radar and air traffic controllers should have warned the cessna about the approaching jet. >> when you have two airplanes coming at each other at 500, 600 miles an hour if you're not looking at the right place, if you don't see him on the radar, tragedy can occur. >> reporter: bazi kanani abc news washington. well now to the other major story this morning. extreme weather across the country. >> that's right. severe storms causing problems in several states. the winds are so strong in reno nevada this small plane flipped over. >> and flash flooding leaving a mess for emergency crews and

homeowners. summer storms triggering danger. in missouri a teenage driver escaping after floodwaters washed away the road. >> i thought i was going to die to be honest with you. there's a water pipe that broke actually and so water is coming in and it's raining and then the mudsliding down and it's just a guyigantic mess. >> reporter: in northwest arkansas roads impassable. power lines hanging in the water and large tree limbs rushing downstream. in indiana flood submerged neighborhoods, families left frustratinging to see if anything can be saved. >> everything is under water in there. i have nothing. >> reporter: weather related calls flooded 911 centers as storms swept across the country. >> i didn't notice the water was deep and hit the water and it just killed the engine. >> reporter: firefighters in texas forced to use a truck ladder to reach a driver stranded in her car by flash flooding. >> flood everywhere. >> reporter: and with record

rainfall in the lone star state people picked up their fishing poles and nets. with roads literally turning into rivers. and that threat remains high today. >> that's right looking at the radar you can see that large system slowly moving east severe isolated thunderstorms are expected in the mid-atlantic ohio valley and mississippi valley. well stunning new development this morning in san francisco's murder that has become a flash point. a new flash point for the immigration debate. sores say the gun used to kill steinle sometime belonged to a federal agent. not clear if it was government issued or personal weapon. francisco sanchez deported to mexico five times has pleaded not guilty and san francisco officials say they released him because there was no federal court order or warrant to keep him in jail. well the pentagon is set to reveal the major new details for a major troop reduction. military brass will reportedly announce tomorrow how they plan to cut 40,000 troops from the army over the next two years.

the changes expected to affect virtually every domestic and foreign post as the u.s. continues to take on isis. another missed deadline for the iran nuclear talks. the u.s. says two sides have never been closer to a final agreement. but there's still significant differences. one of those iran's insistence that the arms embargo be lifted. the u.s. will not go for that. russia's foreign minister says that issue has been settled but he did not say how. the rest of europe is giving greece an ultimatum. the debt ridden country has until sunday to come up with a plan to settle with its creditors and if it does the european union will help greece with another bailout. if not, they'll let the mediterranean country fall into economic collapse. and pope francis wrapped up his final full day in ecuador saying mass before a crowd of more than 1 million. among those in attendance inmates from a local prison. at another appearance the pontiff made a plea for economic equality and called protecting the environment everyone's duty.

to dislodge debris to make sure it was safe enough to reach the 34-year-old victim. the five others injured by falling ice and rocks are expected to survive. a hiker was in the cave described the terrifying ordeal. >> holding hands, screaming and it was just really scary and the poor kids were yelling. at that moment it was just immediate instinct get out of there. >> park rangers say hikers have long ignored verbal and posted warnings to stay out. the area now closed to the public in definitely. in business news major jitters in overseas markets today. stocks in hong kong dropped 8%. japanese stocks also down investors are worried about another sharp sell-off in mainland china where stocks are down 30% in the last month despite the government's efforts to boost the market. the airline industry is being hit with another charge of price collusion. a group of passengers naming delta, united american and southwest in a lawsuit, it was filed just days after the

justice department revealed an investigation into collusion among airlines claiming the companies worked together to keep airfares high. and a federal judge has left a message for time warner cable and other companies that use robo callers. he's ordered the cable giants to pay a texas woman nearly $230,000. time warner called the woman more than 150 times even after she complained they had the wrong number. the calls continued even after she tied her lawsuit. the judge found that so obnoxious he tripled the penalty for each and every call. well twinkies are back from the dead and the company that makes them are no longer for sale. there are reports that hostess brand is now worth as much as $2.5 billion. the snack maker is now snubbing offers to buy it. instead thinking about an initial public offering. that could make hostess worth even more. it was rescued from bankruptcy two years ago by turnaround experts who certainly are not ding dongs. >> they certainly have come a

statue of bill cosby from disney's hollywood studios theme park in orlando. the cancer doctor who admits he intentionally misdiagnosed healthy patients for profit faced his accusers in a michigan courtroom. they lashed out at farid fata calling him a monster who ruined their lives just to collect millions from insurance companies for unnecessary chemotherapy. some were left in permanent agony but others died unnecessarily including the husband of sue lane. >> after he started his treatments he went blind, he lost all his hair he couldn't walk. he couldn't see. >> fata has pled guilty to health care fraud and other charges. the victims and prosecutors are asking that he spend the rest of his life in prison. the judge is expected to sentence him next week. well, in pennsylvania firefighters rescue a 5-year-old boy from a well. he was standing on top of a sealed well in the backyard of his home. firefighters say the cover probably buckled and the boy fell 15 feet. the well has about two feet of

water. he was removed with a rope and ladder. >> it's one of those calls where you're just amazed that this kid just went through what he went through and he -- i mean besides the scratch i saw on his leg he was in really good shape. >> and the boy has now been released from the hospital. his mother had just warned him to be careful right before the fall. well a horrifying accident in utah caught on camera as a state trooper helping accident victims himself becomes a victim as he waited by a car that he had hydroplaned, another car lost control knocking the first into the trooper pinning him underneath. he suffered broken ribs but is expected to recover. in sports top seed serena williams is just two wins away from her fourth consecutive wimbledon win after battling back from being down a set yesterday. beating victoria as rang ka 3-6, 6-2, 6-3. she heads to the semifinals and a possible serena slam. her next opponent maria
