good evening. thank you for joining us. we begin with today's sentencing of the cancer doctor who will likely spend the rest of his life behind bars. dr. farid fata took an oath to do no harm. he did the exact opposite. harmg harming patients in the hundreds to bilk millions. pocketing close to $20 million. tonight as he sits in jail we hear from many of his victims and the man who blew the whistle on what the judge called a horrific scheme. judgment day for the doctor who caused so much pain. victims of dr. farid fata, holding hand outside the courthouse in detroit where he was sentenced to 45 years in prison. victims united in defiance. >> 45 years for the lives he took. it wasn't enough. >> reporter: fata's crime intentionally misdiagnosing 550 people often prescribing

treatment for cancer they did not have. his practice billed $34 million to patients and companies. >> dr. fata gave poison to people who didn't even have cancer and gave poison to the people not to keep them alive but to make money because it was profitable to do that. >> it's beyond my thinking. how can somebody do that? knowingly that they're hurting somebody and abusing somebody and just continue doing it just for money. >> reporter: today's decision sparking a mix of emotions from outrage to sorrow. >> today it's like i'm saying good-bye to my mom again. >> i'm feeling like i'm standing up for my husband. standing behind him and with him. >> reporter: fata pleaded guilty to 13 counts of health care fraud one count of conspiracy to receive kickbacks and two counts of money laundering. >> all of us can understand the kind of trust we have to put into a doctor to help us through the most difficult times of our lives. and so it is difficult to imagine the kind of betrayal that someone must feel when they

find out that the doctor not only lied to them about the kind of treatment that was necessary, but lied to them about whether they ever had cancer at all. >> reporter: at his sentencing the 50-year-old doctor breaking down telling the court i misused my talents yes and permitted this sin to enter me because of power and greed. but those word no comfort for cheryl blades who watched her mother endure the grueling chemotherapy treatments at her appointments with dr. fata. >> i could hear him talking to my mother. i want to every appointment. i could hear him talking to her and promising her to save her. >> reporter: the toll lifelong damage. side effects of treatments they should have never endured. >> we have seen patients who have organ damage patients who hatch lost teeth, who have nerve damage who have serious damage to their immune systems, who have lost bone in their sinus cavities these are not side effects that they will ever recover from. >> these drugs are basically poisons. and you use them in some one who

has cancer because they will kill the cancer cells. but when you do that you know that they're going to beside effects. and often very very severe side effects in those patients as part of that treatment. >> reporter: one of his patients 53-year-old monica flagg. >> i was referred to dr. fata for hematology consultation. i was feeling fine. i continued to feel fine until i started some of my treatments with him. i did one chemotreatment. the others did so many that -- they're practically dead anyway. >> reporter: in 2012 dr. fata told her she had cancer. >> he said we caught it early and i would be on a lifetime maintenance dose of chemotherapy. so it wasn't going to be a real aggressive treatment. >> reporter: after breaking a leg she was delivered life changing news from another doctor in fata's practice. she was perfectly healthy. >> he read my chart. he looked at me very strangely,

i will never forget the look. he came back again the following day and said to me i want you to know i work for dr. fata and i want-up to know you're 51 you are extremely active, you are a pre professional you don't have cancer and you need to not ever go back to dr. fata. >> she had no reason not to trust dr. fata a respected doctor in the community married with his children of his own. he trained at prestigious memorial sloan kettering cancer center in new york. he founded michigan hematology oncology the state's largest private cancer practice. >> it was so difficult to believe. here is a physician with a background that is second to none in michigan. >> reporter: fata's criminal enterprise was crushed in large part to this man. his former practice manager, george karachi started asking questions when two nurses abruptly gave their notice. >> dr. fata was administering chemotherapy to patients without

need. he was also explaining that patients who were on hospice were taken off hospice and put on chemotherapy. put back on chemotherapy. he also pointed out that patients who were who were receiving chemotherapy without disease were receiving it to the very last day of life. >> reporter: in 2013 after he learned what was going on karachi filed a federal whistle blower lawsuit. >> i think he was successful with compartmentalizing staff and creating an element of fear among his staff. >> reporter: for the unsuspecting patients. devastating consequences. >> i twitch all the time. i shake. >> to me this is almost like he was doing genocide. >> how could you do that to anyone in my family? >> reporter: once investigatored learned of fata's crime they acted swiftly and arrested him. >> for most cancer patients the enemy is the disease that they

vu to vow to fight. in this case the doctor was the enemy in disguise. >> reporter: cancer treatment is some of the most rigorous grueling therapy that that we have. and it's not just a patient who is going through the therapy. the whole family is going through it. loved ones children parents. to think that families were put through this is almost unthinkable. >> reporter: for monica and many victims the 45 year prison sentence is not enough for the man who took so much from so many. >> there is many nights where i still cry. there is -- you know, the depression that i have never ever thought i would have to deal with. it's, it's just -- it's heartbreaking. >> next, if you think your mom crosses the line from maternal concern to downright cray-cray. meet the woman who texts her

minute period when they were apart, kate received a total of 11 texts. three pictures. mostly as her mom went shopping on her behalf. >> oh this is cute. can i take a picture of you in the top and send it to her. >> of course. >> let me get your front. turn around the front. okay. >> reporter: one of kim's preoccupations in the texts is the fact that kate's boyfriend, kim calls super jew has not proposed after more than a year of being together. okay, here we go. kate, omg, i found the perfect guy for you on j-date. what? mother tell me you did not make a pre file forofile on the site. omg. do you use pictures? take it down. >> as far as i'm concerned. super jew's days are numbered. all caps. no ring on the finger you must not linger. >> he is looking to settle down. not ideal. he is gorgeous. all caps reply. this is identity theft. >> it is right?

finally tonight, it isn't every day that new york city throws a ticker tape parade. in fact the last time was three years ago for the new york giants. but today the u.s. women's soccer team got the royal treatment and milestone for women everywhere. here's abc's paula faris. >> reporter: smiles and cheers. team spirit and ticker tape. and history. the u.s. women's world champion soccer team honored with the parade through the heart of new york city. ending at city hall with an electric rally.

♪ ♪ >> reporter: in the 129 year history of new york city's ticker tape parade never before a women's team honored. something the ladies don't take lightly. >> abc's robin roberts was there to introduce the team. >> best player in the world cup, carli lloyd. >> the world cup is a dream come true. having the parade in new york city was one of the best moments of my entire life. >> reporter: the little faces waving flags and smiling in the crowd. >> usa! >> reporter: shining bright everywhere we looked. raise your hand if you play soccer? i can't discount how important you guys were the fans of bringing home this world cup for us. >> reporter: being paraded along the so-called canyon of heroes an honor reserved for an elite few.
