and good thursday morning to you all. we begin with that breaking news overnight. a new health scare for former president george h.w. bush. >> he's in a maine hospital after breaking a bone in his neck during a fall. doctors especially concerned because he's 91 years old much abc's bazi kanani joins us from washington where she's been tracking the story overnight. good morning, bazi. >> reporter: good morning, reena. good morning, t.j. president obama was president bush was taken to the hospital. his spokesman said he remains in the hospital out of an abundance of caution because of his age. former president george h.w. bush is recovering at this hospital in portland maine, this morning suffering from a fractured vertebrae in his neck after falling at home. he is fine says his spokesman in stable condition and will not need surgery. it's not known yet how or why the 91-year-old fell at his summer home in kennebunkport, maine. pictured there last month at a

family gathering in the wheelchair he's been using for the last two years as he battles a form of parkinson's disease, one of several issues the former president faced since leaving office diagnosed with graves disease in 1991 a thyroid condition. he spent two months in a houston hospital for a bronchitis related cough and other issues and last december a week in the same hospital for shortness of breath. but bush 41 the nation's oldest living former president has hardly let those health challenges slow him down. just last summer marking his 90th birthday with a thrilling sky dive near his home in maine just as he did for 75th, 80s and 85th. this morning a spokesman for the family says president bush is optimistic about his recovery fully expecting to be back in texas by the start of football season. >> now, because of the freyred vertebrae he will have to wear a

neck brace for a couple of months. we don't know yet how long he's expected to stay in the hospital. reena, t.j. >> abc's bazi kanani in washington. thanks so much bazi. we turn now to president obama. he's pushing back against critics of the historic nuclear deal with iran. the president defended the agreement at the white house news conference yesterday saying it will make the world safer. the deal will sharply limit iran's nuclear program in exchange for lifting crippling sanctions. the president insisted there are only two options here. >> either the issue of iran obtaining a nuclear weapon is resolved diplomatically through negotiation or it's resolved through force. through war. those are the options. >> israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu is calling it a mistake and says israel is not bound by it and could still take military action against iran. today the president turns to

domestic issues during a visit to oklahoma. last night the president calling for you expanding the internet to rural areas. he visits a federal prison. the president will speak with inmates and officials as part of his effort to reform the prison system. federal investigators say they broke up a drug ring operating out of dallas reaching cities all over the u.s. an fbi undercover sting operation uncovered nearly 50 people smuggling drugs on to flights from the dallas/ft. worth airport in exchange for thousands of dollars in payments. investigators say most of those arrested either worked at the airport or used inside information to bypass security screening. back to work this morning for the jury deliberating the fate of colorado theater shooter james holmes. the nine women and three men deliberated for more than seven hours yesterday. during that time they asked the judge three questions and requested a white board. also considering whether holmes was legally insane when he killed 12 people and wounded dozens more in that 2012 attack. u.s. and mexican officials

have been holding talks on working together to capture notorious drug lord joaquin "el chapo" guzman. meanwhile, new details emerging about his brazen prison break. surveillance video you're seeing here shows the exact moment of escape. el chapo walking into his shower stall and vanishing into the tunnel below. officials say they found a dead bird in his cell. they believe it was used to test the air quality in the tunnel. now to the comments about bill cosby. when asked about revoking the medal of freedom the president rejected the idea. he indirectly addressed the string of sexual assault allegations against the comedian. >> if you give a woman or a man for that matter without his or her knowledge a drug and then have sex with that person without consent that's rape. >> cosby received the medal of

greek lawmakers have overwhelmingly approved the bail bailout deal to keep the country from going bankrupt. it came early as thousands of protesters rallied outside parliament against the austerity bill. tough new measures including sweeping tax hikes and pension reforms. it was passed despite staunch opposition from the prime minister's own party. republican presidential candidate donald trump boasting of billions on newly filed disclosure forms much the current gop front-runner claims his net worth currently exceeds $10 billion. a statement from trump's campaign said toast forms are, quote, not designed to are a man of mr. trump's massive wealth. amazon facing major backlash from shoppers. outraged over the company's heavily promoted prime day sale. amazon says orders surpassed black friday.

people have suffered an immeasurable loss. >> reporter: the sisters were just 10 and 12 when they were last seen in 1975 walking from their home in maryland to a nearby mall. police say welch an 18-year-old carnival worker at the time admitted to leaving the mall with the girls. but what happened next remains a mystery. >> the men and women of the montgomery politician department have never given up on finding these girls. this case has been looked at many times through the years. >> reporter: welch finally charged in the case following more than a year of intense searches for the sisters' remains in virginia near a relative's home police say welch visited in 1975 carrying a bag of bloody clothes. but police won't say what if anything was found there or what evidence led to welch's indictment. marci gonzalez abc news new york. well an arizona driver could face serious charges after an apparent road rage incident that was caught on a helmet cam. look at this here.
