pin drop in the theater and we're going to have so much more with her and some of the other athletes that were recognized last night. >> such a powerful moment. cannot wait for that. we want to start with this breaking news overnight. former president george h.w. bush in a maine medical center right now after falling at his summer home and breaking a bone in his neck. there it is right there. jon karl has all the latest from the white house. good morning. >> reporter: the hospital tells us this morning that he is in stable fair condition. a family spokesman said he was taken to the hospital simply out of an abundance of caution. the injury is not life-threatening. as you know george he is 91 years old. there he is just last month at a family gathering in maine. he's had a series of health problems over the years and has been diagnosed with parkinson's disease. but he is a vigorous 91-year-old. as you remember he went skydiving just last summer to celebrate his 90th birthday. >> all hoping for the best for him. you're at the white house. president obama had that press

conference taking on all the critics of this historic iran nuclear deal and now the fight begins in congress. does the white house believe they can actually block a resolution of disapproval in the congress? the republican majority seems to be weighing in against it. >> reporter: they think they have a chance to do that. you need 60 votes to pass this. a resolution of this approval in the senate. right now the focus is all on democrats. vice president biden is back on capitol hill for the second day in a row meeting with democrats pleaing with them not to abandon the president on this deal. if they can hold democrats they can prevent a resolution of disapproval. >> congress has 60 days to weigh in. thanks very much. george while iran was the focus of the president's press conference he covered much more including allegations of sexual assault against bill cosby. the president asked about revoking the comedian's congressional medal of freedom and abc's linsey davis is here with more on that story. good morning to you, linsey. >> reporter: good morning, amy. no formal criteria for

recipients of the medal of freedom except in some way they have contributed richly to life. bill cosby received this in 2002. 13 years later there's a widespread push to take it back. pressure is mounting this morning for president obama to revoke bill cosby's presidential medal of freedom. so much so he even answered a question about it -- >> there's no precedent for revoking a medal. >> reporter: and then without ever saying bill cosby's name president obama added -- >> if you give a woman or a man, for that matter without his or her knowledge a drug and then have sex with that person without consent, that's rape. >> reporter: the nonprofit group promoting awareness victim empowerment or p.a.v.e. insists the president has several options to potentially get the medal back from cosby. >> when he spoke out today it was a small direction in the right direction but we need to

do more. >> bill cosby is a gifted comedian. >> reporter: p.a.v.e. wrote a letter asking for help from president bush who presented this to cosby. >> this was given to him under false pretenses. >> reporter: the group's petition has more than 11,000 signatures. 100,000 signatures would prompt an official white house response. a legal analyst who has spoken out in cosby's defense says the public needs to consider the details from the deposition in a broader context. >> there was no concession in any of the deposition testimony that was released or in any other document that i've reviewed that there was any drug given by mr. cosby to any other person without their knowledge. >> reporter: several of cosby's alleged victims now rallying on social media to get cosby stripped of the medal. the navy revoked his honor chief petty officer title but the hollywood chamber of commerce confirmed his star will not be removed from the walk of fame. we turn to the latest laser scare last night five different

planes landing in newark reporting a beam in the cockpit. the kind that can blind pilots at crucial moments. abc's david kerley is at reagan national airport with the story. good morning, david. >> reporter: good morning, george. this is very scary for pilots. the entire cockpit being lighted up by these lasers. this time it was newark and five different aircraft. just after 9:00 p.m. it started. newark air traffic control gets the call. >> 330 right we're now getting a laser at 10:00. >> who is getting a laser? >> united 330. >> reporter: over the next hour five jets hit by lasers approaching newark. >> for your information there's someone shooting a laser about four or five miles off our left wing. >> that just happened. >> affirmative. just maybe about four or five miles back. >> reporter: all of this six miles from the airport. >> laser event 10:00 runway 4 right clear to land. >> reporter: an american airlines flight from charlotte. >> and american 1976 checking in

wean we got the laser also. >> reporter: in the last year newark reported 28 laser pointing incidents. it's an epidemic nationwide with the fbi forming a task force trying to stop this dangerous practice which could temporarily blind a pilot during one of the most important parts of flight. >> it's not just a danger to the pilots as well as to the passengers, but to the people on the ground. >> reporter: now, the fbi is not catching every one of these people using these lasers but have caught some and, amy, they are sending them to prison. up to five years in prison if you're caught and convicted. >> all right, david, thank you for the very latest on that. new details on the escape of the notorious drug lord el chapo. this morning we are learning more about the breakout. a role a bird played and abc is the first american network to go inside his cell. abc's gio benitez has the latest from mexico. good morning, gio. >> reporter: amy, good morning to you. the cell is a lot smaller than you'd imagine.

it's where el chapo spent most of his time tucked away in one of the furthest corners of this prison. overnight abc news the first american media inside the maximum security prison. and up until just days ago held the world's most powerful drug trafficker joaquin "el chapo" guzman. with so many secure areas, an escape seems impossible but apparently not for one of the world's most deadly and dangerous kingpins. >> we are entering chapo's cell cell number 20. the same cell seen on surveillance video. >> here's that camera. there's that surveillance camera capturing el chapo removing his angle monitoring and disappearing in the shower. a blind spot for privacy. this is where he was pacing back and forth almost nervously and walks over here hidden by this wall. that camera couldn't see it. he just ducks and goes right into that hole. now word that officials reportedly found a small dead bird in el chapo's trash can

has today's other top stories starting with a real summer danger, lyme disease. >> federal health officials are warning that lyme disease is spreading across the country. the cdc says that the tic born e infection is found in states never reported before with high risk areas as far west as minnesota. the reasons, warmer temperatures that may be a factor along with an increase in the number of deer carrying ti tics. obama care is facing scrutiny. the advise issystem is vulnerable to fraud. republicans in congress are promising to fully investigate a video shot by an anti-abortion rights group. it seems to show an executive at planned parenthood discussing how the organization provides fetal tissue from abortions to researchers. now, planned parenthood denies

selling the tissue insisting it is donated for research. and in greece lawmakers have approved a bailout deal to keep the country from going bankrupt. the vote came after thousands of protesters rallied against that deal which includes tax increases as well as pension cuts. well the donald has filed campaign documents claiming he is worth more than $10 billion. donald trump saying he is so rich he doesn't need donors for his campaign. meantime hillary clinton's campaign raised more than $47 million between april and june. that is more than the top six republican candidates combined. and an explosive scene in southern california. an electrical fire blew off manhole covers and left 5,000 without power in long beach. smoke made it difficult for crews to restore power. and finally, everybody, imagine if bacon was healthy. this gets me through every day. we're going to introduce bacon flavored seaweed being grown by

at that moment i was like, what can i do. >> reporter: and he doesn't stop there. throwing a punch at munoz's he will bet pushing and shoving. >> you can sort of see his eyes raging you know really red and pupils dilated for some reason. >> you got to stop. >> reporter: before falling to the curb. breaking his ankle. finally subdued by munoz and a witness. police suspecting he was driving his vehicle under the influence and according to a police report schismenos telling police he had three to four shots of whiskey. >> call the cops right now. help. anyone. >> reporter: the entire dustup caught on the motorcyclist's gopro. the altercation was related to an earlier traffic incident where the motorcyclist cut him off. >> i did nothing to you. >> yeah you just broke the law. >> reporter: police say he could face possible charges including

assault, disorderly conduct, threats, endangerment and impaired driving. authorities haven't revealed if and when charges could be filed. as for the motorcyclist's girlfriend she stands 5'1" and didn't think he would shove a girl but decided he went with violence instead of talking it out. >> bad behavior caught on tape. something remarkable. the firefighter being called a hero not for running into a burning home but breaking up a robbery by tackling a thief and reena ninan has the story. >> reporter: this is the moment an off-duty firefighter turns into a crime fighter. watch as a man wearing a stocking mask enters a texas gas station convenience store pushing former marine daniel gaskey aside, demanding upon from the cashier while wielding a knife. >> i realized real quick what was going on. there's only one reason people wear black masks in a gas station. >> reporter: that's when gaskey a former wrestler springs into

it's 7:42 and back now with "gma's" survival week. this morning how to avoid a boating disaster. there are thousands of accidents on the water every year. with some boats going well over 100 miles an hour things go wrong very quickly. here's abc's matt gutman. >> reporter: seven people on a boat. a seemingly perfect day on the water. but as experienced boaters know all too well things can change in an instant.

>> we were doing around 89 90 miles an hour before we wrecked. >> reporter: brett wasn't supposed to be there that day. he was just hitching a ride. that's him in the back right. he mounted a gopro that caught the horrific scene. >> the fact the boat didn't flip multiple times is still amazing. ♪ >> reporter: that's me going even faster than the boat on the lake speeds in excess of 100 miles an hour but my captains out on the water in miami are pros. >> hey, i'm matt. >> reporter: brad shonewald and larry will teach me to you to operate a boat on the water. a skill that believe it or not is actually optional. you don't have to go out and get what we think is a driver's license. >> it's not required to run a boat like this. >> reporter: according to the coast guard in 2014 there were

4,064 accidents that resulted in 610 deaths and nearly 2700 injuries from recreational boating. and according to shonewald that is mostly because people respect trained properly specifically about the angle of the nose of the boat in the water. what happens if the nose is too high? >> the boat will leave the wave or leave the wake. it'll fly through the air and because all the weight is in the back of the boat the back of the boat lands first which you don't want it to do. >> reporter: larry puts me mind the wheel of this 46-foot catamaran. this requires something he will mental concentration. >> you need to pay attention. you're traveling a football field very quickly. be aware of your markers and surroundings and fellow boaters. >> reporter: the third tool larry and brett teach, to expect the unexpected. wear a life jacket but also many high performance boats have a kill switch. >> so if the boat becomes out of control, because the operator failed to do something

full? we looked at popular bars and picked two that were more than 200 calories. >> that's a lot of calories. >> reporter: then we asked maia feller to analyze them. first the lara bar. what's a separable equivalent snack? >> i took this lara bar and looked it he nutrition facts label and at the total fat. >> no way. >> absolutely. i was completely surprised. >> reporter: the kit kat has a gram less protein and a little more fat but the lara bar has more sugar. it does have more fiber. >> but at the end of the day they're quite similar. >> reporter: now this clif bar, macadamia bar with white chocolate sounds awesome. >> absolutely. >> reporter: her comp. >> here we go. >> reese's peaput butter cups and an egg white. even adding the egg the clif has more fat, calories and both have 21 grams of sugar.

science and medicine so i want to show you what i'm talking about. two bowls of trail mix there. fitness trail mix and regular one. why don't you pick one. >> of course i'll go for the fitness trail. >> you just proved what was shown in a big recent study in the journal of market research which shows that the branding in terms of fitness or weight loss has a big impact. people are more likely to choose that food and then they're likely to eat more of it and exercise less. maybe that's because they're misjudging the portion. maybe it's because we don't feel any guilt when we see the word fitness. >> we might eat for. >> correct. it can add up. this can be the wolf's in sheep's clothing when talking about snacks. >> fitness bars especially or the protein bar, do they offer a good balance between carbs and protein and fiber and the things we need in our body? >> you really have to ask yourself why are you eating it? are you eating it for a meal replacement or a snack or before or after a workout or are you on a hiking trail for six hours a day which is how this all

originated but there are some things we need to look at after you ask your question why am i consuming this? why am i reaching for it? read the label. we say it over and over again. >> some have the same calories as a meal. >> correct, number one, number two when you look at the label sugar should not be in the first three ingredients. there are a lot very chic ways to disguise the word sugar, organic brown sugar, molasses agave nectar. turban turbanado. i didn't even know what that meant until i got a master's in nutrition. >> if you want the healthiest option available. if you're looking for that pick-me-up snack and need energy you say what. >> i'm liking what i see. >> what was in the taped piece, whole foods are always better. not always realistic if you're traveling at work need something for convenience. this is a favorite in my house. we take bananas, a lot of them.
