on the the main artery between los angeles and las vegas. >> reporter: the fire sparking an inferno on the highway. >> i can feel the heat. >> reporter: trucks bursting into flames and a dozen cars torched. the fire jumped the highway 75 miles east of los angeles. authorities were bracing for injuries. >> we have two to three structures involved reports of people trapped. >> reporter: that fire consuming 3500 acres, the column of smoke miles high so thick it cast a massive shadow. dozens of cars abandoned. this showing motorists running to safety past burning vehicles. >> we're trying to get out all the people that left their cars. >> i grabbed my kids and ran up the hill. everybody was screaming.

cars were on fire. >> there it is, drop water on the cars. >> reporter: helicopters dropping water on the cars and firefighters spraying from the ground hoping to block the fire's progress. authorities issuing an evacuation order where people were threatened. firefighters blaming a drone for slowing their response time, the third time it's happened in the past four weeks matt gutman, abc news los angeles. a woman was shot in the head and police are looking for who pulled the trigger. the 26-year-old was shot on 27th street in north philadelphia. she is in stable condition the motive has not been revealed. philadelphia police are working leads and tips in the murder of jasmine wright, the 27-year-old drexel graduate was found beaten and strangled in

her apartment in west philadelphia. there were no signs of a break-in or robbery. she let the killer in leading detectives to believe she knew the attacker. a phone call is a clue. >> one of the parents was on the phone with the daughter at the time of the assault or right before the assault. it will be critical to find out what she knows. >> reporter: police are gathering information on who had access to the apartment. the property manage discovered the body after getting a call from her father who hadn't heard from her in days. police charged a man with a murder in a romantic rivalry. he used a sawed off shotgun to go after the girlfriend's boyfriend. the person died a day later at

the hospital. unemployment rate held steady at 5.4% a fractions of -- fraction of the unemployment rate. university board of governors raised tuition and fees at 3% to cover the $26,000 for a new jersey resident. it called the increase modest and necessary a student group said the hikes are unjustified in light of the increased revenue. there will be no tuition increte for undergraduate students. tuition will rise 2.8% for out of state students penn state president said the tuition will cost the university $17 million

but he hadn't figure out what to cut in the budget yet. septa has released its plans for the pope's visit on the 26th and 27th of september. if you're thinking of using mass transit to come to see pope francis it's time to pay attention. >> reporter: septa has a message if you're thinking of taking one of its trains to see the pope, the time for action is now. monday special one day rail passes will go on sale at the septa website. first time ever we went to a reservation system on the regional rails. normally the rails provide 500,000 rides per day. when the pope is here, it could soar to 1.4 million. this is septa's familiar 274 station network. when the pope is here, only 35 stations will be open.

septa learned the hard way in 2008 moving the enormous crowd heading to the world series parade fans flooded stations and unable to get on overcrowded trains. the thinking using if your station and express trains only the crowds could be moved faster. the station in lansdale will be a departure point. they are expecting ten thousand passengers a day. the borough manager wants would be travelers to know there will be no walk ups that weekend. >> if you don't have a ticket in advance you won't be able to walk you mean and take a hop on the train. >> reporter: the pope's visit is september 26th and 27. if you are going to take a septa train, you need a special ticket purchased in advance that's july 20th go to the website at

before running off. a man who was shot called 911 for help. when a police arrived on the scene, a standoff began. it all happened at 1:40 on the 1200 block of north 26th street in camden. police say a woman answered the door and screamed at police and officers called for backup and entered the home. 41-year-old man was founds shot in the neck, he is hospitalized in a critical condition. a woman and teenage girl were taken into custody for questioning. a police officer was taken to the hospital for a shoulder injury. philadelphia police are trying to identify a man shot by officers after he pulled a gun from his waistband. the suspect is hospitalized in critical condition and had no i.d. on him. "action news" reporter, jeff chirico has the details. >> reporter: this is the loaded gun police fear was about to be used against them. this is the bullet casing that may have been prevented it. detectives investigating the shooting scene at #th -- 8th

and fairmont where officers responded to a call of a man walking around with a gun. >> the officers ordered the male to show his hands. the male refused. then the male grabbed his weapon and started pulling it from his waistband. >> reporter: that's when police say one officer fired a shot and hit him in the chest. they point out the officers showed restraint. >> this appears like a justifiable shooting due to the fact not only was it a radio call of a person with gun, when the police arrived the suspect had a gun in his hand. those nearby commended the police for their performance. >> i think the police did a good job. >> reporter: the officers who shot the suspect was transported to internal affairs and being

questioned police say that's protocol in these situations. at hanheman hospital in center city, jeff chirico channel 6 "action news." >> homicide detectives are investigating two separate shootings one an hour and a half ago in southwest philadelphia. police have not identified the victim or suspect in that case. a playground was steps from the scene of a shooting last night. a 42-year-old man was shot 1 times in the barrage of bullets outside the fence. a second man 38 years old was hit in the hands and treated at the hospital. nobody has been arrested so far. another protest is planned following an arrest of a man in germantown. a rally was held outside philadelphia police headquarters officers involved in his arrest
