>> good morning, it is 7:00 a.m., saturday, july 18. here's some of the stories we're following on "action news" all new this morning philadelphia police search for suspects after a woman is shot in the head. a charred mess leaving two dozen cars are destroyed after a wildfire jumps a highway in california. how a drone kept firefighters at bay. you want to head to the jersey shore to seek relief from the soaring heat. meteorologist chris sowers is outside enjoying the heat this morning with the accuweather forecast. >> reporter: good morning to you, eva it's not too bad right now, the clouds are blocking the sun, we're not dealing with the rays of the sun right now. later this afternoon, as the sun starts to break through, the

temperatures will really skyrocket. as you look closely the arrows are moving south to north that south wind will increase the humidity, it will become increasingly more uncomfortable as the day wears on. we're at 76 degrees in the city of brotherly love. 74 in wilmington. trenton, 73 degrees, double scan live, picking up a hefty band of showers and thunderstorms you wish -- pushing through the lehigh valley. you can see the yellows and oranges, maybe you're traveling along the northeast extension maybe you have to pull over briefly as this line pushes through, we'll set it in motion you can see the lightning count. we've had hundreds of lightning strikes reported. that's taken in 15 minute

status updates. in california people had to run for their lives after a wildfire jumped a highway and scorched nearly two dozen cars. it happened on interstate 15, a major artery between los angeles and las vegas. new technology delayed firefighters from flying in the area to douse the flames. >> reporter: the fire sparking an inferno on the highway. trucks bursting into flames and dozen cars torched. the wildfire jumped the freeway 75 miles east of los angeles authorities bracing for injury. the. >> i have approximately two to three structures involved reports of people trapped. >> reporter: that fire consuming 500 acres, the columns of smoke miles high so thick it cast a massive shadow, dozens of cars abandoned. this video showing motorists

running to safety some of them past burning vehicles. >> we're trying to get out all these people out of their cars. >> i grabbed my kids and ran up the hill. everyone was screaming. cars were on fire. >> reporter: helicopters dropping water on the cars, firefighters spraying on the ground laying down lines of flame retardant. firefighters are blaming a drone much like this for slowing their response time. this is the third time this has happened in the past four weeks. matt gutman, abc news, los angeles. >> new this morning a young woman shot in the head. she is in the hospital. the 26-year-old victim was shot on the 2400 block of north #th street in north philadelphia. police officers rushed her to presbyterian hospital. she is in stable condition.

the motive has not been revealed. philadelphia police are working leads and tips in the murder of jazz -- jasmine wright the 27-year-old was found beaten and strangled in west philadelphia. there were no signs of a break-in or robbery. it is believed she let the killer in. a phone call is another key clue. >> my understanding is that one of the parents was on the phone with the daughter either at the time. assault or right before the assault. that would be critical to find out what she heard or knows. >> reporter: police are gathering information on who had access to that apartment. the property manager discovered her body after getting a call from wright's father, he was concerned because he hadn't heard from her in days. police in chester county have charged a man with first degree murder in in what appears

to be a deadly romantic rivalry. the 20-year-old victim died a day later at the hospital after being shot with a sawed off shotgun. to steady a 5.4% in june, that's a fraction above the national unemployment rate of 5.3%. tuition at rutgers university is increasing. the board of governors voted to raise fees by 2.3%. $26,000 for new jersey residents. the board called the increases modest and necessary. a student group said the hikes are unjustified in light of increased revenue. for the first time in 49 years, the price of admission at penn state is staying put. there will be no tuition increase for in-state graduates.

tuition will rise 2.8% for out of state residents. penn state resident said the freeze will cost the university $17 million. but he hadn't figure out what to cut in the budget yet. septa has released its plans for the pope's visit on the 26th and 27th of september. if you're thinking of using mass transit to see pope francis it's time to pay attention. >> reporter: septa has a message. if you're ink -- thinking of taking one of its trains to see the pope, the time for action is near. monday morning at 9:00 a.m. monday, special one day rail passes go on sale at the septa website. septa moves people. normally the rails provide five hundred thousand rides a day. when the pope is here, that

two employees were inside danny's midnight concessions on 100 block of south 13th street. one worker was shot in the back and is in critical condition. police say the gunman made no demands before running off. a man who was shot called 911 for help. when police arrived on the scene, a standoff began. it happened at 1:40 a.m. on the 1200 block of north 26th street in camden. police say a woman answered the door and screamed at police and slammed the door shut. a 40-year-old man was found shot in the neck. a woman and teenage girl were taken into custody for questioning. a police officer was taken to the hospital for a shoulder injury. philadelphia police are trying to identify a man shot by officer after he pulled a gun from his waistband. the suspect is hospitalized in critical condition and had no i.d. on him.

"action news" reporter, jeff chirico has details. >> reporter: this is the loaded gun police feared was about to be used against them and is the bullet casing that may have been prevented it. detectives investigating the shooting scene at 8th and fairmont where officers responded to a call to a man walking around with a gun. >> the officers five or six times ordered the male to show his hands. the male refused. the male grabbed his weapon and started pulling it from his waistband. >> reporter: that's when police say an officer fired a shot hitting the suspect in the chest. they point out their officers showed restraint. >> it appears like a justifiable shooting due to the fact it was not only a radio call, the police arrived the suspect had the gun in plain view and refused to show his hands. >> i think the police did a good job it's a tough spot it's

the look out for pick pocket they haves the thieves stole multiple wallets in a few hours once wallets are taken they rack up charges with high ticket items. police say the gang usually targets women one thief distracts the victim while another steals the wallet. police are urging women to keep their purses closed at all times. if atlantic city, workers at the trump taj have authorized a strike. local 54 have voted to allow the union to call a strike. the strike authorization comes as billionaire carl ikhan is taking ownership of the taj.
