that three-alarm fire spread to several homes and forced evacuations of nearly a dozen residents. trish hartman is live at the scene, trish. >> reporter: nydia, and eva investigators are investigating the fire as suspicious because they say the buildings had no power. take a look behind me, firefighters are putting wire on the smoldering building. we have crews from pgw working on the scene. there's a gas leak, they are working to get the gas turned off. they don't if that was because of the fire or it was a separate issue. officers are talking to a person of issue who was stopped by police fleeing the scene. police are looking at video cameras and talking to an eyewitness who saw two people in the buildings before it went up in flames. the fire commissioner said it took under two hours to get the

fire under control. the call came in around 3:30, flames were shooting from the top of the buildings. firefighters put out a second and third alarm. the second floor collapsed into the first floor as they were fighting the fire. it did spread to four homes in the 1300 block of snyder avenue. they did keep the fire from getting inside those homes, they were damaged on the outside. >> the men and women of the philadelphia fire department did a great job of protecting overexposure. we had 1319 to 1325 with fire, they were able to extinguish that fire and save the property. >> >> reporter: we've learned that a few people have been allowed back in their homes but a dozen people are displaced at this hour. the fire marshal is on scene

"action news" big board. >> reporter: take it easy if you're outdoors, we'll have an excessive heat warning in effect around noon from wilmington to trenton. it's the i-95 corridor, it includes places like glassboro and lindenwald and south jersey and lansdale and downingtown. heat indices range from 100 to 105. air temperatures are soaring. reading is up to 85 degrees at this 10:00 a.m. hour. wilmington, 84. millville, 82 and trenton 83. satellite and radar, a couple of us saw heavy thunderstorms yesterday morning. we had a bfort that was in the process -- warm front that was in the process of pushing through. the today that warm front is all the way up here. this will be the focal point for showers and thunderstorms today. we'll stay dry there's nothing that will trigger or fire up showers or thunderstorms. nothing but a big area of high pressure pumping in the high

pressure. hazy, hot and humid, combination of sun and clouds, 96 degrees, feeling like 100 to 105. we have severe weather or the probability of severe weather exists west of the viewing area from pittsburgh to williamsport. this is in the form of a cold front this is slowly dropping down toward the south. the front brings relief from tuesday night on, looks really, really nice, i'll have the details when i zee you in just a -- see you in just a bit. >> a three-alarm fire destroyed a condo building under construction in south philadelphia. >> that blaze spread to homes and forced officials to evacuate nearby residents for their safety. trish hartman joins us live from the scene on the 2000 block of juniper street with all the details. trish. >> reporter: eva and nydia

detectives calling the fire suspicious because no power was hooked up to the buildings that was under construction when the blaze broke out. firefighters are working, they are going on seven hours now still putting water on the smoldering building. workers from pgw are on the scene. they are suspecting things to make sure the gas lineses are in tact. officers are talking to a person of interest. that person was stopped by police leaving the scene. police are looking at surveillance video from cameras nearby as they investigate the fire that forced 17 people from their homes. flames shot high into the air on on the 2000 block of juniper street at 3:30 a.m. police say they intercepted a man running from the fire and speaking to him. an eyewitness is telling police he saw two men in the building before it went up in flames. >> around 2:30, 3:00 a.m. i

heard a window break i see a guy with a black hoodie entering the building. i see a spanish male on the roof. i see the one guy leave the scene, as he left the scene and ran east toward snyder avenue, the building exploded. the. >> reporter: flames spread to four nearby homes on snyder avenue. >> the guys did a great job of protecting the exposure, we had 1319 to 1325 with heavy fire and heat on these buildings, they were able to extinguish that fire and save that property. >> reporter: the 1300 block of snyder avenue and homes across across from the burning building were evacuated. 17 people were evacuated and sent to south philadelphia high school. >> i got a knock at 3:30.

we came out of the house the firemen said we need to evacuate because there's embers from the fire landing on the roof. you could see the fire licking on the rooftops. >> reporter: i was asleep i heard a pounding on the door, they were saying there's a fire across the street. it's really bad. >> reporter: now, it's been a long morning for the firefighters and it is getting very hot. volunteers from the second alarmers are here to provide water and other support as they work. a few people have been allowed back into their homes since the fire, but a dozen people are still displaced. the investigation is on going no word on a cause the fire marshal is on the scene and he will be here all day no injuries reported. >> now to the oppressive heat settling into the area. even if you think you're used to hot weather today conditions can be dangerous. take a cue from folks in the
