ain in effect until 8 o'clock meaning it will feel close to 100 degrees in a few locations but many of the spots right now are back into the 90's. our air temperature in philadelphia is 94 degrees right now. it is 91 in wilmington, 90 degrees in millville, upper 80's to the north and west of philadelphia. and the sea breeze has finally kicked in at the shore, 88 in sea isle city and beach haven 87 degrees. how it feels though, that combination of the air temperature and the humidity, yesterday we were all above 100 degrees. today it's 94 in allentown, 93 in reading, 98 in philadelphia but to the south it still feels like above 100 degrees for atlantic city, sea isle city and dover. so that is where we have some dangerous heat and humidity still lurking. it's been a summer scorcher. yesterday was 95 degrees in philadelphia with that peak heat index of 105. so far today we've hit 94 in philadelphia with a peak heat index of 99 degrees. we do have one cooling shower downpour moving towards salem

>> reporter: they were staying cool in the pool hall at the marconi senior center in south philadelphia. it's a cool place to hang out and have fun with friends and neighbors. it's good for their health and good for the pocketbook. >> very cool in here. you don't have to be at home, you know, burning dollars at home. you come here and it's nice and cool and you meet a lot of nice people. we have a good time here, stay all day. >> reporter: places like this can literally be lifesavers for seniors who can't handle the heat as easily as youngsters. >> their body is not going to tell them they're not dealing well with the heat and that's where it really becomes a problem when we experience heat related deaths. >> reporter: the philadelphia corporation for aging has had its heat on the line operating since yesterday morning. they're offering tips to seniors who need help and they're watching for seniors who need medical help. two nurses from the health department are on hand to assess callers that might be having problems. >> the nurse will evaluate their medical condition over the phone as much as possible but then we also have the ability to send out a mobile

until further notice. >> reporter: online sales for the papal rail passes began at 9:00 a.m. within minutes the twitterverse was alive with complaints. at one point the cue for customer service phone calls to septa ballooned to 75. many worried there was something wrong with their computers. >> computers, they were frustrated. they were frustrated and they were afraid that maybe it was already sold out. >> reporter: that was not the case of course. septa's special e commerce site was the culprit. over the weekend, consultants had tested it for a massive response. >> at one point they were flooding the system with up to 1700 hits per second and we also had up to -- and this is a testing mode, 900,000 visits to our site and it worked. but, you know, this morning it did not. >> reporter: ironically septa set up its special online papal weekend reservation system to avoid confusion for riders. by drastically restricting the number of regional rail

between the two countries. cuba's foreign minister slammed the u.s. for holding onto guantanamo bay and for maintaining the embargo. >> pennsylvania republicans today sent a public message to democratic governor tom wolf. the lawmakers gathered the the montgomery county courthouse and urged the governor to end the state budget impasse. wolf vetoed the entire republican backed spending plan on june 30th because it was balanced without higher taxes. he said there wasn't enough funding for education. today republicans asked wolf to engage in productive negotiations. >> we were elected to govern and that means we're to put aside bipartisan differences and try to arrive at just conclusions for a fair and reasonable budget here in the swelt of pennsylvania. >> governor wolf says the republican budget plan failed to address the issues at the heart of pennsylvania's budget problems including rising property taxes and under funded schools. >> the former head of philadelphia's largest

ironworkers union was sentenced to almost two decades in jail today. joseph dougherty learned his punishment for overseeing a campaign to sabotage and intimidate nonunion contractors. the 73-year-old was sentenced to 19 years and two months in jail. he will also have to pay more than half a million dollars in restitution. overall 12 members of ironworkers local 401 were convict id in that case. dougherty was the last of them to be sentence. >> monday afternoon back to work back to reality. >> yes. that means back to traffic jams. so we get a check of the "action news" traffic report. autumn marisa in for matt pelman. >> we're watching an accident on the blue route. this is southbound right past broomall. it's over on the right-hand side right now but it was taking out the left lane. they had to stop traffic to get it over off to the shoulder. it's involving a van and three other cars. so, you can see it's causing some slowdowns here and a big slow down in those southbound lanes as you head from the schuylkill expressway down 95 taking you about 50 minutes to

do that commute right now. heading over to the big picture speeds in the teens across the region. as you can imagine very slow on the schuylkill expressway in both directions. about a 35 minute commute from the blue route to the vine or the vine to the blue route right now as well. and taking a look at 95, here we are at cottman avenue, not looking so bad but in those northbound lanes through girard we have major slowdowns there as well, about 30 minutes to go from the vine to woodhaven right now. several incidents to tell you about out there. 295 northbound past 130 in bordentown we have an accident to report taking out a few lanes and in caln township we have a accident. a water main break in west philadelphia, 52nd street between westminster avenue and wyomissing avenue. haverford avenue will be your alternate. one more for you 95 southbound past mlk boulevard, we have app disabled vehicle several disabled vehicles out there now because of the excessive heat. we'll keep an eye on things and bring it back to you in the next half hour.

nasdaq gaining about eight and three-quarters and the s & p 500 also picking up about a point and a half on the day. >> the city of wilmington is helping some people stay cool in this tremendous heat today. the senior fan drive is for people over the age of 65 who don't have access to air conditioning this summer. "action news" was at the pickup office today inside the reading city building on north front street again in wilmington. it's opened monday through friday until 4:00 in the afternoon and to qualify for a fan you do need to prove that you do in fact, live in wilmington. and it is just beastly hot out there. >> it is yes brutal and -- beastly would be accurate. we go over to meteorologist adam joseph tracking this weather and these conditions can be pretty dangerous for people out there. that beach looks like a good place to be. >> a perfect place to be to kind of break away from this really uncomfortable heat. as we look live on sky6 right now in cape may you can see the flags there are blowing inland meaning that the sea breeze has kicked in to some

shore communities health some with the air -- helping some with the air temperature but it is still very uncomfortable how it feels even with the sea breeze. feels like 103 in sea isle city t you head to the boardwalk in atlantic city a little more on shore wind it feels like 85 degrees there 98 in beach haven and then as you head inland you can see 97 in millville, 98 in philadelphia, 94 in the lehigh valley so these numbers are not as high as they were yesterday. that's the good news and they will continue to drop as we go later into the week. in fact, our dewpoints right now are 68 in philadelphia, 70 allentown, 68 in reading, 72 in atlantic city. any time these numbers are at 70 or above, it is oppressive out there and just adds to that very soupy summer atmosphere. but as we move forward into the week, tomorrow those dewpoints will drop again so it starts to turn drier on tuesday. as we go to 65 which is still humid but not oppressive and then by wednesday thursday, friday saturday, we're in the

50's which is very comfortable for the summer season. in fact, this stretch of weather wednesday through the beginning of the weekend will be some of the nicest we've seen back to back this entire summer season. satellite and radar, we have a cold front to our north and west but very little in the way of energy with it. so even though we have the heat and the humidity combined with the cold front approaching you would think we would have a huge eruption of storms but really that is not the case. we have a couple of little downpours that are popping. one just moved through salem right now now moving east of quaker neck road and route 49 just to the south and east of salem. some heavy rain with that but it is beginning to fall apart but that is the only area on double scan getting wet at the present time. so as we go through the hours of the overnight we're going to be in the upper 60's to mid 70's especially philadelphia down to the south. very uncomfortable tonight. warm and very muggy. there could be a stray downpour or thunderstorm to pop up in a couple of locations but most areas will stay dry and then future

and drug buyers were arrested thursday and friday in the city's kensington section. officers also found $4,200 worth of heroin along with crack cocaine and cash. police say they were mainly going after the buyers to control demand. police say 15 of the suspects came to kensington from the suburbs to buy drugs. >> three people went to the hospital today after an ambulance crashed and flipped over while carrying a patient. chopper six was over the wreck at fox and hunting park in north philadelphia. the crash involved the ambulance and an suv and you can see the ambulance ended up on its side. everyone is expected to survive. >> a three car crash in south jersey knocked out traffic lights in one part of camden county today. the action cam was on the black horse pike at browning road in bellmawr where the crash happened just before 5:00 this morning. a minivan overturned, two other cars were damaged. police had to direct traffic after the crash knocked out this light. we're still working to learn if anyone was seriously hurt here. still ahead in our next

we're moving deeper into the week and as we go through your tuesday and especially wednesday, the humidity is going to drop so then you don't get those oppressive feel-like numbers or that heat index. it's still very uncomfortable this afternoon. we have a heat warning and a heat advisory in effect until 8 o'clock with a heat index near 100 for a few locations but most of us will stay below that threshold as the atmosphere is starting to dry out a little bit. in fact, right now we're 94 in philadelphia just 89 in allentown reading not bad in lancaster, 87 degrees, 90 millville. there you can see along the shore from beach haven to sea isle city in the upper 80's. you factor in the humidity and it's really only those far southern areas that are feeling above 100 this afternoon. otherwise, it feels like 93 in reading, 94 in allentown, 98 in philadelphia. 99 in wilmington. again, not as dangerous as yesterday but still you want to take it slow this evening. drink plenty of fluids. check on the pets and of course the elderly and the young ones. as we look at double scan live radar we've had one downpour

it has been four days since 27-year-old jasmine wright was found beaten and strangled in her apartment. a person has been taken into custody. what authorities are waiting we turn to "action news" reporter vernon odom live at police headquarters. vernon. >> reporter: good evening, brian. they're waiting on dna testing tonight. person of interest is being held in a city jail on $5 million bail on a separate burglary charge. however, no formal charge of murder at least not yet. who killed jasmine wright last week in her west philadelphia apartment? the 27-year-old 27-year-old recent drexel university was beaten and strangled. all weekend police have been holding a local handyman on burglary charges and they say he remains their person of interest in this gruesome case. they're waiting for dna test results to determine if he is indeed their man. wright was found in her third floor apartment last thursday.

there were no signs of forced entry. police believe she let the killer in. there were no signs of sexual assault but the beating and strangling point to a person in a rage. police believe miss wright had been dead for about 24 hours when her body was discovered by the property manager. tonight, a memorial service is scheduled for a church right near the crime scene. the monumental baptist church at 50th and locust. they will hold a one hour memorial service for jasmine wright to be followed by candlelight vigil. live at police headquarters in center city, vernon odom, channel6 "action news." >> all right vernon, thank you. a delaware county mother is facing a number of charges today accused of driving while under the influence of drugs while her toddler was in the car. only "action news" was there as amber anthony was escorted

into the collingdale police department. this after a man called 911 to report that anthony kept falling asleep and hitting his car while behind him in the dunkin' donuts drive through on oak lane. when police arrived they realized the clifton heights woman was very confused and had trouble walking and talking. they also discovered a crying two-year-old in the back seat. delaware county police officers say the customer who called them did the right thing. >> i'm glad. he stepped up and he did call 911. westerly able to get there before she left the area. >> after searching anthony's car police say they found marijuana and several xanax pills. anthony was checked out at the hospital before being arraigned on charges including dui and drug possession. police in milford delaware say this man was so upset when his relationship ended he tried to sabotage his ex-girlfriend's brakes. 41-year-old gene gustav is

accused of unscrewing the crews of the victim's rear brake calipers. she didn't realize anything was wrong until she tried to drive her car. fortunately she wasn't hurt. he's facing several charges including reckless endangerment. >> lehigh county prosecutors now say they will seek the death penalty against the woman accused of throwing her baby to his death. johnesha perry was in court for her an arraignment. she pushed her son off a bridge into a river back in may. he died a few days later attorneys say perry will undergo mental health evaluations from her trial. one of the men accused in the deadly center city building collapse is expected to plead guilty tomorrow. excavator operator sean benschop's attorney says his client wants to take responsibility for his actions saying the 43-year-old cries and prays for the victims and their families almost every night. benschop was charged with third degree murder after a

break the window after she saw the two-year-old girl sweating in the back seat. this happened saturday in a kansas city parking lot when investigators say it felt like 110 degrees. luckily that little girl was okay. her aunt and uncle are facing charges after police say they left her while they went shopping at a nearby cell phone store. >> a surfer known around the world for coming face the face with enormous waves got way too close for comfort with something on the other side of one of those waves this week. this is the terrifying moment nick fanning was attacked by that huge shark in the waters off south africa. it happened on live television during a surfing tournament. the shark knocked him off his board but fanning somehow escaped injury. rescue boats quickly scrambled to get him out of the water. >> kept coming at my board and i was like kicking and screaming. i punched it in the back. >> i was absolutely terrified. i thought we'd lost him.

get a little more comfortable day by day especially by wednesday. >> some relief. >> finally. as we take a look right now double scan live radar we had one downpour that moved right over downtown salem and parts of salem county but that has faded off of the radar scope. right now everyone is just hot and dry and in fact, yes, it is hot but it is not official al heat wave at this point because saturday we hit 89 degrees in philadelphia. the way to have a heat wave or the way you can hit that criteria is to have three consecutive days of 90 degrees or above. yesterday we were 95, today we were 94. tomorrow we will go into the 90's so tomorrow this officially will be heat wave number two of the summer season. yeah, we've only had one so far this summer. 87 right now cape may. that beautiful sea breeze helping out at the shore. 84 in margate. 84 in surf city and then as you head inland millville 91 degrees, 89 in allentown so the temperatures this afternoon are not horrific out there.

they're not like yesterday and the dewpoints aren't as high either. so the heat index is below 100 degrees across much of the area including the heart of the delaware valley, wilmington allentown and reading. but to the south even though there is that sea breeze, that's pulling in very humid air, so that is why it feels more uncomfortable at the shore despite that the air temperature is lower. how it's feeling, those dewpoints are above 70 degrees across much of the area, so it's still rather oppressive outside but as we look at future tracker went go into tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock, notice the dewpoints are dropping into the lower and the middle 60's especially from philadelphia to the north and west. that's some of that drier air starting to filter in. still very tropical at the shore tomorrow afternoon and then by wednesday at 2 o'clock, everyone's dipping back into the 50's so that is a breath of fresh air with canadian high pressure coming in for the middle of the week. there is a cold front though, to the north and west. not much in the way of activity with it but as it slides through here tomorrow there could be a scattered

downpour or thunderstorm in a few locations but for tonight it's warm, it's muggy. there could be a pop-up here or there, 70 to 78 degrees. but as we're tracking this front tomorrow, one more hot day of 93 but less humidity as that drier air is trying to pull in with that high. again a scattered storm is possible tomorrow afternoon and then high pressure comes in a beautiful change wednesday, seasonable with a high temperature of 85. the exclusive accuweather 7-day forecast, 93 tomorrow, hot but less humid. and again a stray thunderstorm. and then wednesday thursday, friday into saturday temperatures in the middle 80's lots of sunshine, very few clouds, low humidity as well so a beautiful stretch ahead and then some changes come in sunday as the humidity goes up. there could be a scattered thunderstorm on sunday afternoon but a better chance comes in on monday with a temperature of 86 degrees. so, one more day in the 90's, guys and then we're done with it as we go into the end of july as it's looking right now. >> we're over it.

we definitely have a very dangerously hot and humid day. heat warnings continue for the immediate i-95 area until 8 o'clock tonight and the outlying areas under a heat advisory. we do have heat indices close to 100 degrees. right now the current temperature in philadelphia, it's 94 degrees. millville 92 wilmington 91, trenton 91, atlantic city 93 degrees. but the dewpoints generally in the 60's and some areas even the 70's and that means it feels a lot hotter. the heat index in philadelphia 98 degrees and you can see that the humidity is much hotter much higher i should say south and east of philadelphia. this is where the heat index up in the triple digits and this is the second day of this oppressive heat and humidity. so that can really have an impact on the health of people especially the elderly. you definitely want to remember the pets as well, make sure they have a cool spot. yesterday the high 95 degrees. the heat index yesterday 105. today in philadelphia so far the
