we definitely have a very dangerously hot and humid day. heat warnings continue for the immediate i-95 area until 8 o'clock tonight and the outlying areas under a heat advisory. we do have heat indices close to 100 degrees. right now the current temperature in philadelphia, it's 94 degrees. millville 92 wilmington 91, trenton 91, atlantic city 93 degrees. but the dewpoints generally in the 60's and some areas even the 70's and that means it feels a lot hotter. the heat index in philadelphia 98 degrees and you can see that the humidity is much hotter much higher i should say south and east of philadelphia. this is where the heat index up in the triple digits and this is the second day of this oppressive heat and humidity. so that can really have an impact on the health of people especially the elderly. you definitely want to remember the pets as well, make sure they have a cool spot. yesterday the high 95 degrees. the heat index yesterday 105. today in philadelphia so far the high 94 with the heat peak

callers can get help finding air conditioned places to get out of the heat and also get help on avoiding heat stress. we're going to go live now to "action news" reporter chad pradelli in chester delaware county where some senior centers have been turned into heat shelters today, chad. >> reporter: yeah, that's right, alicia. this is one of many cooling centers. talking with staff they say a few extra people did slow up to stay cool but county leaders want people to know they're here to help and there are resources they can tap into. delaware county council has activated its heat plan with temperatures soaring. senior centers across the county are extending their hours allowing the elderly to seek refuge from the heat. county leaders have also handed out roughly 200 fans this summer and have 50 left for those in need. >> we just remind seniors that they should try to stay indoors and try to stay in air conditioning if it's available to them. if not please get yourself to one of our municipal senior centers or come here to our

september to to suspend ticket sales for the pope's visit in september. the passes went on sale around 9 o'clock this morning as planned but minutes later the site was overwhelmed with would be buyers. septa says the site was tested to handle 1700 hits per second but this morning's demand was three times that amount. if you're still without a ticket you are not out of luck. john rawlins is going to explain coming up at 6 o'clock. and a reminder you can get the latest on the pope's upcoming visit by following us on twitter at 6abc pope. we're posting the latest news, tips and pictures as we prepare for his arrival. >> in other news, police are still looking for the person who shot a 21-year-old man in the face right in front of his father. happened around 11:15 last night here on the 4500 block of west wingohocking street in philadelphia's logan section. the shooting victim was taken to the hospital where he was later pronounced dead. police say the victim's father chased the gunman for about four blocks after the

shooting. the suspect then made off in a car. police are still working to get a description of the gunman and the get away vehicle. new developments tonight in the investigation into last week's shooting rampage in chattanooga tennessee. the fbi has found the gunman's diary adding to new and disturbing discoveries into the young man's background. abc news reporter marci gonzalez joins us live from new york tonight with more. >> reporter: rick, getting new insight into his mental health. substance abuse problems and travel history but the fbi says they still have the no found any connection to any terror groups. today dozens of additional fbi agents are in chattanooga still piecing together why mohammod abdulazeez who had no known connection to isis chose military facilities as his targets. investigators focusing today on this wal-mart where they claim the 24-year-old was joined by two other men as he bought ammunition just days before last week's deadly shooting rampage.

many paying tribute today to the four marines and one sailor killed. >> wee he wanted to serve his country and that's what he did. >> reporter: as investigators look for a motive analyzing what abdulazeez's family says was a recent fascination with powerful weapons highlighted by this video he reposted about ak-47's. >> excellent gun. made well. they run great. >> reporter: despite the smiles in these new images provided to abc news abdulazeez's family described him as a conflicted young man with health issues on the verge of bankruptcy and wrote in his diary about suicide and being a martyr after losing his job in 2013. according to a family representative abdulazeez's parents told agents that along with being on prescription medication their son abused alcohol and marijuana. the family so concerned they said they center him to jordan last year to get him away from friends who were bad influences in the u.s. the fbi now looking into whether he was radicalized

during that seven month trip. and in response to last week's attacks today we learned that security is being increased at all military reserve centers recruitment facilities and rotc units across the country. reporting live, marci gonzalez channel6 "action news." alicia, back to you. >> all right, thank you. the driver of a truck lost control this morning and hit a utility pole in burlington county. chopper 6hd was over the scene around 6:00 a.m. on route 130 near the liberty two diner in mansfield township. several wires were lying on the ground after the crash and pse&g crews had to be called to the scene. no serious injuries were reported at the crash site. >> all right. talking about traffic, let's get an update on tonight's "action news" traffic report. >> let's go live to autumn marisa in the "action news" traffic center. she's in for matt pelman and a busy monday. >> uh-huh. >> absolutely. hi, alicia and rick. it has been extremely busy out there. we're following another accident in lower makefield

township at 95 southbound just south of new hope. this red vehicle here spun around. you can see it's facing the wrong direction right now. we have police on the scene ambulance just left the scene. so go slow out there this afternoon for whatever reason we're seeing accident after accident. taking a look at the big picture we just had three accidents just clear the schuylkill expressway eastbound right at the conshohocken curve was the first. the second was the southbound off ramp onto the schuylkill expressway eastbound from the blue route and again the blue route southbound at broomall. so again just keep those speeds down out there. for whatever reason we're seeing a lot of accidents pop up. taking a live look at the ben franklin bridge, on the westbound lanes if you're heading into philadelphia we're down to two lanes there because of construction. not moving too badly if you're heading over into new jersey right now. and taking a look at all the other area bridges we're nice and clear. no real construction or accidents to report out there. mass transit looking good with no reported delays. and taking a live look outside to the 42 freeway here we are

5:30. major interstate in southern california shut down after heavy rains caused a bridge to collapse. happened over the weekend about 180 miles east of los angeles. a 30 by 50-foot section of a bridge on i-10 gave way bringing a pickup truck along with it. crews had to cut the pickup truck driver out of the vehicle. he was hurt but expected to be unclear. officials say it's unclear when the interstate will reopen. >> in health check tonight some tiny devices that do some pretty big jobs have come to the area and staffers at one hospital got a closer look at them today. >> amazing story. health reporter and registered nurse ali gorman is the big board to fill us in. >> hi, guys. thanks to micro chips the size of medical devices is shrinking. that's making them easier for doctors to use and less traumatic for patients. and today we got a look at how new technology can help patients with heart disease. doctors and nurses at lankenau hospital got hands on experience with the world's smallest heart pump. they're thinner than pencils

and can be threaded into the heart through a blood vessel. that eliminates the need for open heart surgery. >> prior to that swelled to do a sternotomy, open the patient's chest up and use a implantable which was big bulky and traumatic experience. >> the motor itself is smaller than a pencil eraser. it boosts the speed and power of flood flow pumping out 3 liters of blood a minute. this helps hearts that are too weak to do it on their own. the pumps are not for long term use but they can stabilize in emergencies by giving hearts more time to rest and to heal. now in philadelphia, they're going into use at lankenau and at einstein. also today another advance in technology. the use of drones is expanding into healthcare. the government approved some test flights and over the weekend a drone delivered medicine to a pop up up health clinic in rural virginia. it was the first clinic to receive medical supplies from

withdrawn. parents are shelling out more money than ever to pay for their children's college. student loan provider salli mae found college spending was up 16 percent in the 2014-2015 academic year as compared to the previous year. on average families shelled out more than $24,000 a year. salli mae found parent contributions from income and savings were the largest funding source for college students for the first time since 2010 surpassing scholarships and grants. >> 1,000 jobs were up for grabs in montgomery county today. the coast to coast king of prussia career fair ran for three hours. people brought their resumes to the double tree hilton hotel on dekalb pike. more than 20 of the area's top employers were looking for potential candidates. well, you can now get help in emergency by texting 911 in montgomery county. county commissioners launched its new tech service today to show how it works this morning. it will allow those who have hearing or speaking disabilities or people who

if you're on the beach it's still hot but you get closer to the water the ocean temperature is 72. you get that little bit of a sea breeze that can help and you get in the ocean and that really is refreshing. temperature-wise though it's another hot day. seconds day in the row of temps in the 90's. philadelphia 94 degrees. wilmington and trenton 91. millville 92. even sea isle city reporting a temperature of 90 and dewpoints generally in the upper 60's and even in the 70's and that means the heat index is getting very close to that dangerous level especially south and east of philadelphia. philadelphia 98 degrees. we did lit 100 earlier today with a heat index. millville, though, it feels like 101 dover 100 and sea isle city it feels like 102 degrees right now. so that dewpoint around 70 degrees for most of our viewing area makes it oppressive. the good news is dewpoints will be dropping. tomorrow will be another hot day, temperatures in the 90's again. likely making this an official heat wave. but the dewpoint tomorrow 65 degrees. that's somewhat humid but not

like today. but look at wednesday thursday friday and saturday. dewpoints only in the 50's. that's very low humidity, a comfortable air mass is moving in and it's going to be sticking around for awhile. storm tracker6 live double scan showing that we just have one little blowup of some downpours near llewes delaware beginning to move off the coast. that's with the first of two cold fronts moving through. satellite6 along with action radar shopping the seconds one still across the midwest really doesn't have a lot of activity with it. it will swing through tomorrow night and that will bring us the possibility of a few hit or miss thunderstorms. i think they'll be more miss than hit. and that will really cool temperatures off by wednesday. tonight, though, is going to be a warm and muggy night with a stray thunderstorm possible. most areas rain free. 78 degrees the low in philadelphia. 73 in millville. 68 in allentown and 75 in wilmington. but future tracker heat index slowing 11 o'clock when i'm on tonight, it's going to feel like 87 degrees in philadelphia. but as we head to lunchtime

>> "action news" continues with meteorologist adam joseph, jaime apody, rick williams and monica malpass. >> hello again monica is off alicia vitarelli joining us tonight. here's what's happening on "action news" this evening. an incredible struggle for survival. shown on live tv a professional surfer has seconds to act after a shark sneaks up behind him. also new details in the case against an allentown mother accused of killing her baby. and an ambulance transporting a patient ends up on its side on the way to the hospital. we'll explain how it happened. >> but first we are continuing to track day two of this oppressive heat with temperatures in the 90's and higher humidity. people are doing whatever they can to stay cool. our sky6 hd camera pointed right at the beach on cape may right now where as you can see, people are still taking advantage of that cool ocean water and the breeze and excessive heat warning remains until 8 o'clock tonight and then we start to see a few changes. meteorologist adam joseph is live at the "action news" big

board with all the details for us and adam being at that beach this evening, pretty good idea. >> yeah, especially with that sea breeze kicking in dropping the temperatures right at the immediate shore into the 80's but it is still oppressively humid down there even at the shore despite the winds are off the water. heat warnings in effect until 8 o'clock tonight for the heart of the delaware valley and then around that area a heat advisory also in effect until 8 o'clock tonight while the heat index remains close to 100 degrees in a few locations. but it has been a summer scorcher the last 48 hours. yesterday's temperature in philadelphia 95 with a peak heat index of 105. today so far 94 degrees with a peak heat index of 100 so a little better than yesterday and tomorrow will get a little better and then that big change comes in on wednesday. right now your current heat index 98 philadelphia, 101 in millville, 100 in dover and lower 90's to the north and west. the poconos pretty nice at 84 degrees.

thais between the united states and cuba. after 50 years the u.s. and cuba have restored full diplomatic relations reopening embassys in each others are capitols. a cuban delegation of the cuban revolution commemorating the break through. cuba's flag raised outside its embassy in washington d.c. and the singing of the cuban national anthem. >> ♪♪ >> the willingness to work towards relations with the united states. >> reporter: on the caribbean island workers and diplomats have been preparing everything from new business cards to the embassy sign, although things are quiet outside the building today. >> today with the opening of our embassies and the visit of the foreign minister, we are taking an historic and long overdue step in the right direction to keep moving forward, both governments must proceed in a spirit of openness and mutual respect.

>> reporter: and that engagement includes making it easier for some groups to visit cuba from the united states. cuba and the u.s. broke diplomatic relations in 1961 when cuban president fidel castro banished u.s. diplomats calling the u.s. embassy a nest of spice. critics including several republican presidential candidates say cuba has not yet done enough to earn a new relationship with the united states. >> i would end the diplomatic relations with our anti-american communist tyranny until such time as they actually held a democratic opening in cuba. >> reporter: the festivities and flag raising in cuba will have to wait for secretary of state john kerry's visit. the official embassy reopening there is scheduled for early august. stephanie ramos, channel6 "action news." >> a brand new abc news washington post poll shows presidential candidate donald trump has a solid lead over his republican opponents. among registered republicans polled last week, 24 percent

said they support trump for president. wisconsin governor scott walker came in second with 13 percent support. a majority of the poll is conducted before trump's controversial comments about senator john mccain, however. trump said mccain was not a war hero because he was captured in vietnam. now trump is blaming the media for spinning his comments out of context. >> we talk about john mccain and i think it's great and he is a very brave man and all of that but we don't talk about the people that weren't captured and that's what i was trying to refer to and i think i did. >> trump made the original remarks on saturday. the abc news poll which was conducted thursday through sunday showed support for trump that had actually dropped throughout the weekend. >> well, if you haven't seen this video you have to watch. a professional surfer in the middle of a competition in south africa is suddenly attacked by a large shark and it all unfolded on live

television. surfer nick fanning was waiting to catch a wave when a shark fin is your favored in the water there. people watch on television saw it coming but fanning had no idea. he was suddenly pulled off his board and into the water. emergency sirens went off. rescuers raced to where fanning was last seen. fanning meanwhile broke free and tried to swim away but then he said he made a decision. >> i think i tried to punch it. and then it started like dragging me under and dragging me by my lace and yeah, i was -- i was like -- i didn't know what to do. do i keep my board or whatever. >> or whatever, right? on top of all of this, amazingly fanning walked away without a scratch but he says this frightening encounter may just keep him out of the water for g you can watch fanning's incredible escape again on our web site, 6abc.com. and world news tonight

with david muir will have much more on that incredible shark attack as well as the u.s. and cuba diplomatic relations rekindling. you can watch that following "action news" at 6:00. >> dozens of suspected drug dealers and users are now off philadelphia streets and favoring criminal charges. today the police narcotics strike force announced the details of a big bust in kensington late last night. in all, 68 suspects were arrested on thursday and friday. officers also found $4,200 worth of heroin, along with crack cocaine and cash. >> you want to get your buyer in for a program and maybe the arrest is a wakeup call and maybe awakeup call for their family, maybe they get the help they need and we don't see them back here. at the very least we don't want to see them back in philadelphia. >> police say 15 of the suspects came to kensington from the suburbs to buy drugs. scary moments in north philadelphia this morning when an ambulance transporting a patient was suddenly hit by a minivan and then goes sliding. "action news" reporter katherine scott has the story.

>> reporter: the accident happened right here at this intersection. you can see it's clear now but this morning traffic was being detoured. eight people were taken to area hospitals with nonlife-threatening injuries. an ambulance thrown to its side. a smashed minivan in this north philadelphia intersection. eight people were taken to area hospitals after a crash just before 7:40 this morning at hunting park avenue and fox street. >> everything was happened so quick. >> reporter: food vendor inan kahn was among those who helped. the fire department said the ambulance had its lights and sirens on with app patient in the back when it was hit by this minivan. kahn held the ambulance door opened while two more men tried to get the patient out. >> she was almost through the door so she was just crying. she was just really crying. >> reporter: she was taken to the hospital in stable condition. three children, their father and their grandmother were in the minivan on their way to summer school. one family member rushed over to the scene but they had already left for the hospital.

>> i really want to run. >> as we take a look at double scan live radar we do have a decent amount of sunshine. there was one scattered downpour an hour in parts of salem county but nothing out there to cool you off. in fact, as we take a look at the action cam it was down in parts of olde city on independence mall. looks like a beautiful day from this vantage point but when you step out the door you immediately break that sweat. as we look at the temperatures, we do have a sea breeze, at least at the shore communities. 84 right now in sea isle city, 85 in beach haven with that southerly wind off the ocean of 72. dover at 88 degrees and then we're in the 90's right along i-95 including millville and uner 80's to the north and west. yesterday we had heat indices across-the-board well over 100 degrees. today from i-95 north and west it was mainly in the mid and upper 90's for your heat index. southern areas a little hotter because of that very humid air coming in off of the ocean

feeling like 101 right now in millville. however, those dewpoints which really drive up that uncomfortable feeling, when it's in the 70's, that's oppressive. that's where we were yesterday and for most of today. tomorrow drops down to 65. so it's humid but it's not oppressive. it's better. and then take a look at wednesday through the beginning of the weekend. we are in the pleasant range. a really nice stretch in fact probably the nicest stretch of at least four or five days there we've seen so far this summer season on its way. we have a cold front just to our west. that first front will drop the humidity some tomorrow. there's a second front near chicago. notice not a lot of action with this so we're not looking at any sort of widespread severe weather tomorrow as a cold front passes through. it will be scattered and the same thing for tonight a stray thunderstorm is possible but most of us dry warm and muggy. 70 to 78 degrees. but as this front slides through tomorrow, it's n remains hot, a little less humid. scattered storm possible and then this high pressure comes

in and becomes a muscle maker for the rest of the week. it brings a beautiful change and seasonable with highs at 85. down the shore tomorrow, sun and clouds, 86 surf city, atlantic city 87. there could be an evening thunderstorm as the front passes through. same thing for southern tip of cape may at 86 and rehoboth and bethany beach upper 80's and again that stray evening thunderstorm with the ocean temperature of 78 degrees. the exclusive accuweather 7-day forecast, sun and clouds tomorrow, hot but less humid at 93 degrees. again a-few pop-ups in the afternoon and then wednesday through saturday, sun mainly dominating the forecast and the sky, just a few clouds each day. highs a little below average in the mid 80's with low humidity. and then on sunday, sun and clouds mixing. there will be little uptick in the humidity sunday, could be some late day thunderstorms developing but the best chance right now could hold off until monday of 86 degrees. so, 24 more hours and then we get that break. >> then we run then we go running.
