on thursday friday morning we have to begin with breaking news out of louisiana. a theater packed turns to tragedy after a gunman starts firing. >> three dead including the gunman. the victims ranges from teenagers to people in their 60s. >> the scene right now live outside the theater in lafayette, louisiana, an active scene. authorities have been busy and at this hour they continue their investigation including a part of this has been ex-employeding suspicious packages that they found in the suspected shooter's car. >> and stories of heroism already ee americaing including a teacher who warned others about the shooting. we get more from abc's bazi kanani. >> reporter: at this louisiana movie theater a comedy flick ended in horror when police say a man stood up 20 minutes into the film and opened fire. more than 100 people inside ran. >> the whole group of people

teenagers mainly, running out telling everybody to run for their life and saw a lady with blood all over her leg. i grabbed my child and we all ran. >> reporter: officers near the grand 16 theater moved in immediately. >> officers entered to engage the shooter. they did hear shots being fired at that time. >> reporter: the gunman killed two people and injured another nine before turning the gun on himself. police are not yet releasing his identity but say he was a 58-year-old white male. louisiana's governor calls one of his victims a teacher, a hero. >> even though she was shot she full pulled the fire alarm to save other lives. >> reporter: amy schumer tweeted my heart is broken and all my thoughts and prayers are with everyone in louisiana. the mass shooting in lafayette on the same day jurors decided they will not rule out the death penalty for james holmes the

gunman in another movie theater massacre three years ago in aurora colorado. bazi kanani abc news washington. >> abc news producer is outside the theater. we know it may be over the situation. but what can you tell us? we know the investigation only beginning. what have you been witnessing in the past few hours? >> well as we drove into town there were already signs along many of the businesses. our thoughts, our prayers go with the wounded. shot at this movie theater. it's a somber scene, a very active investigation. you know the suspicious package inside the car turned out to be nothing. the car has been checked and is clear but there are still -- they're still trying to figure out what happened and what the motive was, so while it may be early morning, it's still a very busy active police

investigation. >> gina you talk about what the motive have been but trying to piece together who was this guy. word he was probably not from the area. he's a 58-year-old white guy but still was he a local guy? >> reporter: they're not releasing that information to us. we do know the bomb squad has completed their work. it will take four to six hours for them to process and photograph the scene. the shooter has been i.d.'d but haven't given us his name. a 58-year-old white male with an extensive criminal history is pretty much all they've told us. >> gina sunseri on the scene for us. we appreciate you this morning checking in from the scene for us and, again, a horrific scene lafayette, louisiana played out. watching a comedy. >> some victims have been released from the hospital but at least one critically injured moviegoer is in surgery
