as police continue to gather information on the gunman. >> authorities say the killer's name is john russell houser. we also are learning that investigators say houser opened fire during a showing of the movie train wreck in lafayette, louisiana last night. police believe he was trying to disappear into the crowd of people running from the theater but his plans changed when he saw police who responded within a minute of the first calls for help. >> law enforcement response forced him back into the theater. at which time he shot himself. >> 21 mayci breaux died at the scene. police found several disguises including wigs and glasses. two teachers are being called heroes. one for taking a bullet for her friend. the other for pulling the fire

alarm to clear the themed our coverage of the movie theater shooting continues on our web side 6abc.com with updates on the investigation. we also have gallery of images including pictures of the gunman victims and more details on that hero teach here shielded her friend from a bullet. >> philadelphia police identified the man suspected of killing a recent graduate of drexel university. 56-year-old james harris is accused of murdering jasmine wright. wright was found beaten and strangled in her amount last week. police say harris had been fired from his maintenance job at wright's building. he is described as a career criminal who has been locked up 31 times. "action news" reporter vern odom was at this afternoon's announcement by police and he'll have much more on harris and how police connector him to the crime coming up tonight at 6:00. >> several families in camden county are without a home this evening after a fire ripped through a townhome.

chopper 6hd was overhead as flames shot through the home along the 700 block of colonial square drive. tonight officials are still investigating how that blaze started. "action news"'s reporter trish hartman is live on the scene with the very latest. hi, trish. >> reporter: hi, sharrie. well today was a day too assess the damage after last night's fire here on colonial square drive. several of these homes have heavy damage many residents are countering their blessings today that their families made it out alive. >> please, please. >> reporter: 16-year-old darcy davis and her mother prayed as she captured video of the fire using her cell phone before the firefighters arrived. >> the whole fire, i was kind of scared, shaking up. i was comforting my mom and dad. >> reporter: the davis home is heavily damaged but the family including their poodle squirt got ought safely. >> we just glad it didn't happen at night when we were

sleep but it was devastating. we got out with our lives so we're good. >> reporter: four families were forced out of the inferno. chopper 6hd flew overhead as firefighters worked for more than 90 minutes to control the flames. a borough official deemed homes unsafe to enter pending the fire marshal's investigation. samuel field lives here with five family members. he says it all started around 7:00 p.m. when he heard a pop in the circuit breaker upstairs. >> my room was on fire, so get out the house. >> reporter: fields' two-year-old dog died in the fire. he said he spent years renovating his home is that devastated by what's left behind. >> it's emotional. so it's -- it can be rebuilt though, you know. it can be rebuilt so, you know it's all material. god has a plan for us. >> reporter: kathy's two katz were lost for two hours but were found safe. she tzedek kids of said precious items

were lost. >> he lost all kinds of artifacts. >> reporter: no word on a cause. officials say one firefighter did suffer minor injuries here last night. no other injuries were reported. live in lind wall, new jersey, trish hartman, channel6 "action news." rick. >> trish, thank you. from our delaware news room tonight, state police are looking for a plan who held up a bank with a gun in new castle county. happened around 9:00 this morning on the 2,000 block of concorde pike in fairfax. officials say the suspect was last seen running from the scene and into a neighborhood behind the bank. another armed robbery investigation is under way in dover tonight. police there want to -- want your help in finding two men who robbed a 7-eleven at gun point. it happened yesterday around 3:15 a.m. on north dupont highway. one suspect jumped the counter and grabbed an undisclosed amount of money from the cash register. if you have any information on this crime you're asked to

call dover police. >> a delaware murder victim's family and friends are begging for anyone with information to come forward. 30-year-old jamar kilgo was murdered at the rose hill community center back in february and the crime still has not been s his mom spoke to "action news" today because she doesn't want her son or the case to be forgotten. >> somebody robbed him of his life. they were a coward. they took him from his children. they took him from his family and i'm pretty sure that they have a family, too. how would they feel if it was done to them or someone in their family? >> meantime there is a $10000 reward that the new castle county council put up for information in this case. anyone that may know something is asked to call new castle county police. changing gears now turning to our accuweather forecast and the weekend that's up ahead that we're all waiting for. going live now outside, this

is sky6 hd over atlantic city, new jersey. you see the people outside enjoying the day. it's a beautiful start to the weekend but the humidity will begin to return. meteorologist cecily tynan is outside with the first look at the forecast. hi cecily. >> hi, sharrie. it certainly is a gorgeous start to the week. what a boring three days we've had. temperatures have been comfortable. we've had low humidity, just the way we like it in summer. wednesday 85. yesterday our high only 83. today so far our high 85 degrees. the average high for this time of the year is 87 degrees. and of course with that low humidity, we are seeing abundant sunshine, high pressure really in control. satellite6 along with action radar showing nothing more than a few fair weather clouds especially close to the shore where we do have that sea breeze front beginning to develop. showers up to the north over new england, some showers down to the south over the carolinas but we are stuck in the middle with dry weather. friday night evening planner if you're out and about very enjoyable. at 7 o'clock 83.

pilgrim has that story. >> reporter: when the pope comes to philadelphia, this will be one of the symptoms the curran fromhold correctional center. the pope will walk through these doors into these halls. he has about an hour scheduled here. >> when he comes in he'll be meeting with some of the inmates that are selected, some of their families and also eventually some of the staff. >> reporter: while a big crowd of tens of thousands will meet on the parkway for mass a hand selected small group will get the meet the pope just hours before up close and close and personal in a room that will likely be very much like this one. the vatican made a special request to allow the chosen inmates to bring their families as well. the inmates here are mostly pretrial, the majority have not yet been sentenced. >> anything we can do to reunite the families to encourage, contact to help generate support, we do. >> reporter: the inmates have planned a special gift for the pope when archbishop charles chaput visited the inmates who are learning trade skills as part of the skills

>> hillary clinton's personal e-mail account could make her the target of a new federal investigation. two inspectors general say they suspect sensitive government information was mishandled while she was secretary of state. clinton and her campaign says she followed appropriate procedure in dealing with classified information. justice department has not decided if they'll go forward with the investigation though. >> another major healthcare merger is officially in the works. anthem has agreed to buy cigna in a $54 billion deal. the agreement still has to go through a regulatory approval process. but if it's given the green light that would leave just three major health insurance companies. health insurers say it will reduce costs by increasing efficiency but many doctors say it gives insurers too much power. >> health check tonight, it is fitness friday and you're never too old to reap the benefits of exercise. >> ali gorman introduces to us to a workout specifically for

the boardwalk in atlantic city and sea isle 82 and beach haven currently 80 degrees. a little bit of a sea breeze kicking up there. so far july has been be a little bit on the warm side, temperatures running .8 degrees above. no we've only had five days in the 90'sly we'll probably get three or more before the ends of the month. theit has been a dry month as well. rain 2.18-inches that's about an inch below normal, looks like we will remain on the dry side as we head to the weekend. satellite6 along with action radar showing a broad area of hi. this has brought us three days in a row of sunny comfortable weather. that high pressure though will begin to migrate to the east. what that will do is change our wind direction out of the southwest so that will bring warmer air but tonight for your friday night another very comfortable night. a lot of as a result out there. 67 degrees the low in

>> "action news" continues with meteorologist adam joseph, jaime apody, rick williams and monica malpass. >> hello again, monica is off. sharrie williams joining us tonight. here's what's happening on "action news" this evening. a warning tonight for more than a million people who own cars made by fiat chrysler. your vehicle may be in danger of being carjacked by hackers. a montgomery county man taken into custody after allegedly holding his father hostage. that's just the beginning. excitement at one jersey shore spot this afternoon when a fisherman snags a shark. you'll hear from the man who reeled it in. but first we have breaking news now out of cranston heights delaware just outside of wilmington. chopper 6hd is over a shell gas station where authorities say a customer found an attendant lying on the ground with a gunshot wound. this is along the 2500 block of route 41 near milltown

road. investigators are not releasing the condition of the gas station attendant or who may have shot him. they remain on the scene searching for clues though and we'll continue to follow this breaking news story and bring you any updates as they become available to us. >> and our other big story imagine driving your car one minute only to have someone else take over the controls without any warning. well that's what's prompting car maker fiat chrysler to recall more than 1 million popular vehicles tonight. they say hackers have figured out a way how to break into the car's computer system to make the vehicles do whatever they want it to do. "action news" reporter david henry is live in cherry hill with this story. david. >> reporter: yeah, well, chrysler jeep dodge dealerships like this one here in cherry hill are in the middle of this massive recall the first of its kind. some of their customers actually started coming in looking for a fix even before the recall. >> i was probably the first customer to visit them about

this. david brought his car in as soon as he saw it on the news. two hackers demonstrated the possibilities for wired magazine. as a reporter drove a jeep, they took control with a computer miles away. adjusting the controls, killing the engine on a busy highway and even causing the jeep to drive into a ditch. >> the odds were against it but i don't want to take any chances with that. >> reporter: today roth berg's car joined 1.4 million others in a massive recall. here's a list of the cars and trucks affected. some have been on the road since 2013. they are equipped with fiat chrysler's uh connect system normally controlled by the driver on a screen on the dashboard. the car maker will be issuing u.s. b devices to owners to upgrade the software. >> actually they're going to do that for me but if they give me the memory stick and i follow their directions, i can probably do the same thing. i could also have downloaded it onto my own memory stick at home. >> reporter: the government has launched an investigation into the problem.

nhtsa says it's important for customers to follow the instructions they receive from fiat chrysler and perform the software fix as soon as possible to ensure they are protected. roth berg says he's concerned but feels the odds are against being hacked. >> what are the chances of my getting picked? it's like the chances of winning the lottery. >> reporter: maybe so but it's not worth the gamble. it may be fiat chrysler today but experts worry about other cars as well. it's estimated 27 million cars worldwide are now connected to the internet. live in cherry hill, david henry, channel6 "action news"." rick. >> david, thank you. overseas in turkey warplanes have struck isis targets across the border in syria. nearly 300 suspected terrorists were arrested. the turkey government says three jets used smart bombs to hit three isis targets. leaders say the decision to company out the operation was made during a security meeting yesterday after an isis

militant opened fire on a turkish military outpost. >> secretary of state john kerry is defending the iran nuclear deal and he's taking his message on the road. well today during his talks with the foreign relations council in new york, kerry told members it's the only alternative to military action and must be tested if diplomacy is to suck keyed. if congress rejects the deal kerry warns iranian hard liners will speed ahead with the nuclear program and the international sanctions regime would collapse. world news tonight will have the latest on the iran nuclear deal debate and the big recall by fiat chrysler. you can watch that following "action news" at 6:00. >> back here a man remains in critical condition following an overnight shooting in philadelphia's nicetown tioga section. happened just after midnight along the 1400 block of lennox avenue. detectives say a 19-year-old man was shot multiple times allegedly by a 25-year-old man. that man stayed at the scene

and told police he was defending himself after the 19-year-old pulled a gun on him. the 25-year-old did have a license to carry his weapon. philadelphia police are asking for the public's help to identify the suspect in a shooting in the brewerytown section. authorities say the gunman parked his burgundy four door jeep wrangler along the 2600 block of cecil b. moore avenue monday night, got out and approached the victim but was then convinced to get back into his car by an unknown person at the scene. but as the suspect drove away, police say he fired two shots at the victim hitting him in the leg. that victim is now recovering but the motive for the shooting is still not known. chopper 6hd over 52nd and master streets in west philadelphia this afternoon. you can see two cars crashed near the intersection here. authorities say one of the drivers climbed out of the car and ran off. the other driver suffered serious injuries and was rushed to the hospital for treatment. >> a montgomery county man is behind bars for allegedly taking his father hostage and threatening to shoot police

officers. officials say the mother of 27-year-old andrew cooper told police her son was armed inside their lansdale home wasn't threatening his father this morning. she also told authorities her son had hid weapons throughout the house. detectives created a plan to get cooper out of the home and once he stepped outside, he was arrested. no one was injured. officials say they found several weapons including assault rifles and thousands of rounds of ammunition inside the home. it's still unclear what prompted cooper to take his father hostage. atlantic city electric is feeling the heat from state regulators over its response to the june 23rd storm. downed trees left nearly 280,000 of its customers without service for days. the state board of public utilities says ac electric's communication with customers and officials was "less than optimal." the board says the company should have clearly conveyed the problems that it was

having to damage assessments. ac electric acknowledged in a statement that it needs to improve its communications. >> well, it may be the middle of summer but lawmakers in reading are already thinking about christmas. officials are trying to avoid the same controversy as last year over the so-called charlie brown christmas tree. many residents called the scrawny 50-foot norwegian pine unfit for the city. many others rallied around it adorning it way single red ornament just like charlie brown. this year civic groups are vowing to save time by getting an artificial tree instead. a small shark took the bait just off the coast. fisherman paul trunzo was the one who wheeled the little guy in and showed it off to the excited crowd. he says he's been fishing for sharks all week and today he got lucky. >> the line just stopped and it took off on the drag and i

>> an inmate being held in a texas cell across from sandra bland says she did not hear any commotion suggesting foul play before bland was found dead. a preliminary autopsy ruled bland's death was a suicide by hanging. alexandria pile was in the cell across from bland. pile says over the three days they were there, bland was talkative and eager to get out of jail. while bland's family remains doubtful about the autopsy report pile says she believes the 28-year-old did indeed commit suicide. >> i don't think the guards did anything for sure. i mean, -- >> pile wishes the guards would have put bland in the cell with her and two other women to emotionally support one another. >> residents in one british columbia community raced into action to help young whale that found itself in a tough
