but the july fry is on from louisiana to shreveport up to kansas city and st. louis. they are in an excessive heat warning. that means air temperatures will reach 100 in little rock and memphis but will feel up to 110, even 113 in some places then tomorrow's highs because it's sticky it's hot and it could be if you're exposed for cumulative days dangerous. i'm more concerned about the heat and the potential records out west. we won't have records here in the east. sacramento stays in the 100s. very dry, very gusty, terrible for the fire conditions and that's why we head to our matt gutman there at the lowell fire. matt. >> reporter: good morning, ginger. just over the past hour the fire has really blown up about a half mile away from us now. we tried to get to the fire line. firefighters stopped us. you could hear the intensity in their voices right now and this is the problem. wind carrying the fire up the hill and across this valley and that's the case for firefighters across california this morning.

overnight with new fires exploding fueled by wind and heat firefighters scrambleing to gain the upper hand. new fires ss smoking up in bass lake and oakhurst. here at the lowell fire stakes still high. firefighters amassing at the top of hillsides to meet the flames. >> we have hundreds and hundreds of hope solos that could be threatened. >> reporter: 1800 homes evacuated so far. from the sky an all-out aerial attack. a dozen choppers and another dozen air tankers. we've been watching this fire for four hours now steadily march up this hill now. helicopter after helicopter dousing those flames. these fires taxing firefighters physically and mentally. >> grueling hours sometimes but that's what we signed up for. >> reporter: this morning across california more than 5,000 firefighters battling 9 separate major wildfires. homeowners hacking down their beloved pines. is there a point over the past few hours or days that you

thought you might lose this house? >> yeah about every ten minutes. >> reporter: with firefighters strapped helping themselves. there are still about a thousand firefighters around here and as ginger has been mentioning all that heat and all that wind is going to make it a very difficult few days for them. this fire is 25% contained but finishing up this job is not going to be easy. george. >> okay matt thanks. we turn to those threatening lers sent to nearly two dozen government offices in oregon. some of them contain a white powder one sheriff has been rushed to the hospital with a roar. pierre thomas has all the latest. good morning, pierre. >> reporter: good morning, george. the concern in oregon is real this morning after that law enforcement official was hospitalized after opening one of at least ten letters sent to state offices. we don't yet know what that substance is but "the oregonian newspaper" says he sustained a rash immediately upon opening the letter. they're helping local officials

to find out what this is and what sent it. investigators are investigating whether it came from the same person. state officials will be testing that substance and may learn more today about what we're dealing with george. >> okay pierre. we have seen these kind of attacks before, thanks. to you to a real scare in the sky. a crowded passenger plane from china to dallas forced to turn around after it was struck by hail. you can see the damage to the nose right there. the plane did land safely and abc's jim avila has our story. good morning, jim. >> reporter: good morning lara. it was a short flight less than an hour but passengers aboard one of the newest planes will not forget. this morning a look at what severe hail can do to a modern jetliner. >> yeah wow. >> reporter: this brand-new boeing dreamliner took off monday an american airlines flight from beijing headed to dallas/ft. worth. 44 minutes into the flight the plane hit severe weather. >> all we can tell you it was just crazy, going sideways up and down.

>> it was scary. >> we dropped a good few hundred feet at least. >> i thought the plane was going down actually. >> that feeling of shhh. >> reporter: the pilots pump turned back and landed safely but with some major depths in the nose cone. >> hail can damage an airplane to the point that it actually brings an airplane down if it damages engines or control surfaces it can make it unfly unfliable. >> reporter: it's not the first time this happened. in june this 747 forced to land after hail pummeled the nose and wings so badly, delta grounded the plane permanently. as for that dreamliner fortunately none of that dreamliner's 222 passengers and crew on board was hurt. the nose cone covers some radar equipment, but the plane's operations were not hindered. remember this plane is made completely of carbon fiber so it could take some time to repair. george. >> okay jim, thanks. we have the race for president now. your voice, your vote and what

miles from the shore. is that a good or bad thing? >> it's a good thing because it validated our search efforts that we were looking in the right area. >> reporter: the teens set out from this marina friday morning reportedly heading to the bahamas. >> the water is relatively warm. you can survive for quite a few days. >> reporter: their families now circulating a new flier to boaters and pilots saying we believe the boys made floating devices, noting that life jackets and a cooler were missing from their boat. >> these two kids have some experience on the water. we hope they had extra personal flotation device certainly that will to live. >> i think between the two of them they work as a team they're going to be found and they're going to be okay. >> reporter: the teens are trained mariners both licensed to operate vessels on their own. it's part of the lifestyle in jupiter. what's the earliest age when you took it up. >> same age, 14. >> reporter: 14 you went out on your own? >> yes. >> reporter: but that culture is sparking debate online with some

criticizing the boys' families for allowing them to go out. even the coast guard doesn't have age limitations. lighting up the night sky over jupiter last night with this. this by the way, is the same location where more than 100 came out for that vigil last night. the coast guard captain in charge of this entire operation telling me personally they do not plan to give up. lara. >> all right. none of us will give up. thank you so much kendis. to amy with the other top stories starting with a big decision by the boy scouts. >> that's right. we have new reaction overnight to the decision by the boy scouts to lift the ban on gay scout leaders. the organization says church-based units will still be allowed to exclude gay adults but the mormon church a major sponsor of the boy scouts is protesting the move and threatening to quit the organization saying its century long association with scouting will need to be examined. also breaking overnight a tragic end to the search for a

missing 8-year-old in northern california. police in santa cruz say the body of madyson middleton has been found behind the apartment complex where she lived. she was last seen sunday riding her scooter. a 15-year-old boy who lived in the same complex is now under arrest and being questioned. people in oklahoma have been rattled by a series of earthquakes, groceries were knocked off the chefs near the epi epicenter north of oklahoma city. look at that. the biggest quake, a magnitude 4.5 about 2 million people felt that shaking, experts have linked oil and gas drilling to a 50% increase in quakes in that area in recent years. and some tense moments on the road as a robbery suspect led police on a nearly two-hour chase between new jersey and philadelphia of the man speeding through a mall parking lot until finally a state trooper clipped him on this corner flipping the van over. he climbed out of the window but then quickly surrendered. a bizarre case of stolen cash caught on camera. two workers on their way to

filling atms in new jersey say they inadvertently left a bag full of $141,000 in cash right there on that lawn. then you see later thiefs in a van drive by and pick it up. police say by the time the workers realized their mistake and they went back the thieves were long gone with the cash and they do not believe this was an inside job. finally, a race that really turned up the heat. a local gas company dressed kids up as appliances for this race between innings at a baseball game in michigan. things got off to a rocky start when the oven overheated. >> oh! >> minutes later it was the dryer taking a tumble. the water heater thought it had just the right thing to win but the others race back in a big collision. this until he tripped and lost everything to the dryer.

good morning, america. right now, dangerous heat stretching across the country this morning. heat advisories in the south. the east bracing for a possible wave. triple digit temperatures are fueling the wildfires in the west. also federal officials will be grilled on capitol hill today about those live anthrax samples that were sent accidentally to dozens of labs around the country of the a major investigation underway. also in the headlines right now, that prison worker who helped those two killers escape in upstate new york is heading to court. joyce mitchell is reportedly hoping to reach a plea deal. we say good morning, america. a lot to get to. check out this picture, imagine waking up next to this 5,000-pound tree right on your bed. a 20-year-old woman was actually in the bed when the tree came down fell right on top of her and actually the emergency responder said it took a long time to get her out. it was the way she was sleeping

that may have saved her life. >> she was sleeping when it happened. she is so lucky. we'll have more on that coming up. we want to begin with bobbi kristina brown. still so many questions about how and why she died. authorities say the investigation is open. it is active and abc's david wright is tracking it all for us this morning. good morning, david. >> good morning, lara. bobbi kristina brown never regained consciousness to explain how she ended up face down in her own bathtub, the initial autopsy completed yesterday didn't explain it either and what's not clear is was she the victim of her own lifestyle or of a crime? >> 21-year-old female in the bathtub face down. >> reporter: this morning new questions about the day last january that bobbi kristina brown's boyfriend found her unresponsive in the bathtub of her suburban atlanta home. >> there is cpr in progress. we're getting a third party that is not on scene. she is gurgling at this time. >> reporter: the medical examiner tells abc news the initial autopsy is inconclusive

and does not show an underlying cause of death or any significant injuries. the question of how and why she died still the focus of an active investigation. subpoenas issued. ♪ and i ♪ >> reporter: one big question could drugs have been a factor? as they were for her famous mother whitney houston who drowned in a hotel bathtub nearly three years to the day earlier. >> she said she'd learned from her mother's mistakes and was looking to move on and grow and move past her drug use. >> reporter: another possibility that a recent car crash might be to blame. just four days before she slipped into a coma bobbi kristina crashed her friend's jeep into an oncoming car or is there some other explanation? brown was last seen publicly the week before her death leaving a cvs store with her boyfriend nick gordon. sources close to the couple say they had a stormy relationship. brown's conservators recently served gordon with a $40 million lawsuit claiming he stole her

money. and physically abused her. allegations gordon denies. according to the suit when she entered the hospital her mouth was swollen and one of her teeth knocked out. as whitney houston's sole heir bobbi kristina brown was set to inherit some $20 million. the boyfriend has not been criminally charged. his mother tells abc news he is in mourning and that her son loved her and cared for her deeply. one more tragic detail to add, lara or george is that she's being buried next to her mom. >> okay david thanks very much. dan abrams here right now. david just talked about the $20 million bobbi kristina was set to inherit. what happens to that? >> you go the to separate it out into the money ha she's already received from the will which is a couple million dollars. that goes to her estate that could likely end up with bobby brown. the rest of it goes back to what whitney houston's will said so because she didn't get the rest of that $20 million, you go back

to whitney houston's will to see who else would get the money if bobbi kristina didn't survive so i think you're talking about relatives of whitney houston. >> meantime, you got this investigation that's been going on for six months now still open and active as they said so how does bobbi kristina's death change the investigation. >> you would think if there was a crime committed, right, if they believed there was at least an assault before she died they would have charged it. it suggests to me they're having some trouble identifying exactly what they want to do here. they're making statements publicly which make it clear that they view him as a possible suspect here. >> the boyfriend. >> that's right but they have not charged him yet. i think that the death will certainly expedite the investigation. doesn't mean he'll get charged but it mines that it will expedite the investigation in a way where i think they've been sort of waiting a little bit to see what happens, sadly she's died now. that's going to put pressure on them. in addition to the fact that there's now a civil lawsuit that's been filed against him.

>> the family clearly thinks he had something -- at least something to do with it. how does it change things. >> it doesn't change it for the investigation. shouldn't change it for the investigation and even in the civil lawsuit, they're sort of shying away it seems a little bit, from the actual issue of did he kill her? they're focusing on money issue, the fact he assaulted her in the past they say, so civil lawsuit, again, remember lower burden of proof. even if there are no charges here even if the authorities say, we don't think we have enough to move forward and charge someone in connection with this you still have the civil lawsuit where the legal standard is just more likely than not. a preponderance of the evidence. >> okay dan abrams thanks very much. george and dan we turn to that young woman so lucky to be alive this morning after surviving a 2 1/2-ton tree that crashed through her roof trapping her in bed all while she was sound asleep. abc's gio benitez has our story. good morning to you, gio. >> reporter: oh lara such an incredible story, good morning to you. that tree just about as big as this one and that is why so many

this morning are calling this story a miracle. this morning an incredible image on new york's long island. a massive tree weighing 5,000 pounds crashing right through a family's home at midnight pinning a 20-year-old woman right to her bed. incredibly the young woman alive but stuck. >> when you saw this damage you must have been thinking my gosh she is lucky. >> yeah no absolutely that was some of the most extensive i've ever seen. >> reporter: dozens of rescuers working for two hours using hydraulic lifts to free the woman. overnight that 20-year-old telling abc news she's thankful to be alive. >> she was great. she was talking to us and she was able to tell us what was going on. >> reporter: emergency responders crediting her survival to the fact that she was sleeping on her side saying near mere inches separated her from more serious injury. so many now asking what caused that tree to come crashing down? this morning, word that the tree was rotting at the base.

it is just about 7:43. we are back now with a warning about your phone. chose to 1 billion android smartphone and tablet users could be in danger of being hit with a hack attack exposing all of your personal information. abc's mara schiavocampo is here with all the details. good morning, mara. >> reporter: lara good morning. it's being called one of the most serious potential threats to android ever uncovered. possibly allowing a hacker access to all of your most sensitive information and you'd never even know they'd been there. android, the most popular mobile operating system in the world used on up to a billion phones. this morning, as many as 95% of these phones are vulnerable to a malicious new attack. a cybersecurity expert warning of a massive security flaw that could allow a hacker to break into your phone just by having your number. >> to be exploited before the user noticed anything. that is very dangerous. >> reporter: here's how it works.

hackers create a short video with malware hidden inside then secretary it to you and the scary new twist, you don't even have to open it for the bug to access your phone. when your phone receives the message it begins processing the video and that's what lefts the bad guys in giving them access to all of your data everything from contacts to photos even letting them take over your microphone and camera to monitor your every word and move. >> android devices get software updates inconsistently which is incredibly scary. it leaves users kind of in a lurch. >> reporter: similar to what happens when they embed malware in phone apps as we were shown. look what happens when he takes my picture. can we see the photo? will it appear there? and sure enough it's now on his laptop. the phone was even recording our entire conversation. >> right now a command was sent to the phone much it is eavesdropping on the microphone

family. why the price of fertility treatments could be about to skyrocket. this of course a treatment that so many women and families try to help them get pregnant. selling eggs is a big issue but we turn to amy for the morning rundown. >> good morning. we start with the fbi investigating suspicious letters arriving in the mail. at least ten government offices in oregon have received letters containing an unknown substance. a sheriff was reportedly hospitalized with a rash after opening one of them and at least two buildings were evacuated. the fbi is not revealing details of those letters. well extreme weather in california is adding to the fire danger this morning. high heat and strong winds are fueling at least nine major fires across the state. an estimated 5,000 firefighters are on the job with 1800 homes evacuated so far. well the coast guard is expanding the search for two teenagers lost at sea off florida. the families of the 14-year-olds are hoping the boys are clinging to a cooler or wearing life

jackets. both are licensed to operate a boat on their own and in a show of support, lanterns filled the skies last night as hundreds turned out for a vigil on the beach. some disturbing actions caught on camera. the driver of a party bus was found texting behind the wheel putting dozens of peep at risk. more now from abc's ryan smith. >> reporter: this morning, an alarming case of distracted driving caught on camera. a limo bus driver filmed scrolling and texting on his smartphone while driving 45 passengers down a new york highway. >> and i was furious. i couldn't believe that a man that had 45 lives in his hands would do something this serious. >> reporter: the dangers of distracted driving so serious, at&t even incorporated them into this new ad released just last week. >> everyone loves the picture i posted of you. >> reporter: in 2013 more than 3,000 people were killed in car crashes involving distracted drivers.

banks and how men can make quick cash for their donations but what about women offering up their eggs? it's a complicated possess involving hormone shots and an these ya so some are asking is it right to put a price limit on it? 30-year-old katie o'reilly is one of thousands of women would donated her eggs to help others start a family. >> my initial reason for donating was financial. >> reporter: she was paid $8,000 but says it was far from easy. >> i got very very bloated. i was also very exhausted all the time. i experienced fainting spells and i was in severe abdominal pain. >> reporter: the process has o'reilly and others asking who controls the price of a human egg? that question at the center of a lawsuit filed by two women on behalf of all egg donors claiming forertility clinics have capped the value. the society for assisted pro-productive technology and american society of reproductive

medicine that set the standard. anything more than $5,000 requires justification, they say, and more than $10,000 isn't appropriate. the lawyer in the lawsuit calls that naked, illegal price-fixing saying those regulations leave donors deprived of the benefit of free and open competition? because it's my body it should be my decision what i choose to get for compensation for something like that. i think that having a price cap is a bit arbitrary. >> reporter: gina-marie happily donated her eggs four times but thinks she should have set her own price. >> by me becoming an egg donor and helping the intended parents achieve their goals of having a family they helped me achieve my dreams for setting myself up for the life i always wanted. >> reporter: she isn't complaining about the $38,000 she banked for her eggs. it helped put her through law school. what if choosy families had been willing to pay her more given her intelligence. some worry we open the door to

desperate women selling their eggs to the highest bidder or putting their health at risk to make money interest their genetic material all things that will probably come out in this lawsuit. george. >> a lot of issues to work through. deborah, thanks so much. we're joined by dr. jen ashton and dan abrams is back. walk us through the process of donation. >> medically this is a very extend tiff process. the first thing a woman considering donating her eggs has to go through is a general medical evaluation. make sure she's healthy enough to go through it then we suppress the donor's ovarian function so we can override that take control then stimulate they are ovaries with daily injections of hormones then there's monitoring with ultrasound sonograms to know when you're going to retrieve those eggs and then the egg retrieveal process involves an these ya risks of bleeding infection, damaged internal organs with a very long needle. takes three to five weeks? we heard one woman, $38,000 for her eggs.

how is the price set? >> when you talk about donating eggs versus sperm, it's not apples to apples. when the talk about the sperm donation it's based on an hourly rate so men are paid $60 to $75 an hour and they have estimated that women take about 56 hours to go through this entire process so they arrive at a price of $4,000. these are not equivalent processes. men, first of all, can donate 2 million sperm at a pop. women are born with 300 eggs that they off late over their reproductive lifetime. >> dan, i know these egg donation prices are just guidelines so where does a lawsuit come? no specific legal caps. >> the clinics are signing up agreeing to abide by these particular guidelines. this a pretty strong lawsuit. i mean when you think about the fact that the purpose of the law, right the antitrust law is to say that businesses entities covertly or overtly,

can't get together and agree on particular prices and generally it's an effort to increase prices not bring down prices. but i think that here you can make a very good argument "a," when the price is capped on the women, well is the price capped then on the clinics? and secondly another i think interesting response to this argument of well you know women desperate women are going to do this when they shouldn't. what about the difference between a woman makes $30,000 a year an a woman who makes $300,000 a year. that $5,000 is going to mean a lot less to someone who makes 300,000 so are we going to start evaluating how much money they make in assessing how much they're allowed to sell their eggs for? it's pretty strong moving forward? we'll look at it. dan, thanks very much. jen, you'll take questions on twitter all morning. >> yes. >> @drjashton. millions tuned in to "the

♪ >> reporter: beyonce empowering girls running the world. in many ways it's true for the last few decades women have been breaking professional barriers. but this morning, a report by harvard's educational school revealing there is a hidden barrier your teen girls are running up against. >> girls are facing biases from many source they're facing biases from teen boy, from some parents, from each other. >> reporter: the startling results these biases could be holding girls back from succeeding. >> we have made a lot of progress in terms of gender equality but we still have a long way to go. >> reporter: the study of 20,000 students showing only 8% of teen girls preferred female political leaders. >> i expected more. >> males have always led so i guess we're kind of used to it. >> right now it seems to be mostly a male dominated sphere. >> reporter: what's more surprising even some mothers appearing to be biased supporting school councils more led by boys.

the report revealing girls tend not to support other young women saying they feel threatened by their successes in school perhaps acting instead like the plastics in "mean girls." >> it's our burning boo. we cut out girls' pictures from the yearbook. >> reporter: she believes girls need to work collectively to fight biases. >> emphasizing girl solidarity is an important message. >> reporter: for "good morning america," juju chang, abc news new york. >> thanks to juju for that. i'm here with rachel simmons author of "odd girl out." girls holding girls back. moms holding girls back? >> it's amazing. but it's not that surprising because even in this day and age we've given girls every opportunity but our attitudes still have to change. we're still giving girls messages to look at each other as threats. i mean think about all the media images of "mean girls" and catfighting and so girls are not looking at each other as people to support and they're also feeling so insecure about how

they look. think about instagram and social media. they're feeling like i'm not as pretty as the next girl so they're not supporting each other. >> the first time you see someone delike one of your instagrams it sets off all kinds of -- >> exactly. >> how do you break these patterns especially for moms? >> i think one of the things we have to remember about moms is that they grew up with a different set of messages and also not dup. they know girls who are outspoken and with who are seen as aggressive will probably suffer for it so they may be worried about their daughters but i think that there's a lot that parents can do. it's not jaws about what girls should do. research shows that chores can be distributed in very gendered ways. that enmoos we tell boys to mow the lawn and girls do the dishes. change it up at home. a big thing parents can do. let boys do caregiving. beliefs and attitudes start early and moorptss can change it early and quickly in the home. another thing, change the way we talk to our kids. if you is ang outspoken girl do

you call her bossy or say i'm so glad you spoke up. if you have guys at home who talk about doing things like a girl as if that's a weak thing to do, we've got to say, knock it off. that's not the way to talk. >> we've got to be checking ourselves all the time. >> totally. we all have our own biases. this is what i do for a living but i can tell you i have a 3-year-old daughter and when she doesn't want to wear a dress i get bummed out. i got to deal with my own stuff. every parent has to look at their own bias what toys are we buying for their kids. are we buying the girls makeup kits and girlboys science kits? it's okay to do it but change it >> george, now it's time to get out and give. sharing stories of incredible people making a difference in communities across the nation. it's part of abc's be inspired initiative and this morning a young boy whose mission it is to bring a smile to face of kids in the hospital

delaware. you're taking a look at some of the video that has come in. a tractor-trailer losing control and ending up on top of the car trapping the driver. we now just learned that the driver in this case is dead. this is a fatal accident. let's head on over to matt pelman to get more detail. >> horrible scene for sure, tam. you can see the wreckage left here along 273 near airport road. right by the smell station. in fact the accident also took down the sign of the shell station so emergency crews remain out here on the scene making repairs and cleaning up. you want to stay far away from 273 here in new castle as we come back out to the maps stay on 40 pulaski highway as a much better bet. still looking at severe backups in bucks county this morning because of earlier accidents on both 95 northbound and route one northbound. both remain really clogged. if you're headed into new jersey try and work your way over by the tacony palmyra or burlington bristol to bridges and come up 295 and on 95 into the northeast southbound here by bridge street there's a motorcycle crash.
