federal government is poneying up grant money for the philadelphia fire department. sharrie williams has the details. >> it's great news to help higher firefighters. >> reporter: philadelphia firefighters responded to 50,000 fire calls. due to attrition the department loses 8 to ten firefighters a year. they spend millions of dollars in overtime. last year they paid 37.6 million to have firefighters work overtime. >> being awarded the 22.9 million grant it helps us to higher the firefighters for the people retiring. >> reporter: the federal emergency management agency awarded the money as part of a federal adequate fire and emergency response program. when they applied for the grant

there was no certainty they were going to get the money. >> not everybody who applies gets awarded. so it's great news for us. >> reporter: with the money, the department expects it will be able to higher 160 additional firefighters. >> great day for the fire department and the city of philadelphia. so even though we get to higher the members, they will serve the community so it's a great day for the city of philadelphia as a whole. >> reporter: the process to higher additional firefighters has bee would gun. under a provision of the grant all 16 a firefighters must be hired in a two year period. dann cuellar channel 6 "action news." >> the search resumes for a missing swimmer in berks county. the man dover -- drove into a quarry, but never reassure

faced. -- reassure faced. a girl trapped in a sweltering car was rescued by police officers. this happened in hackensack. it was caught on camera. witnesses flagged down a police officer who broke the window and pulled the little girl out. she was drenched in sweat all along. the mother holding another child showed up. >> the mother was charged with child endangerment and released. the child was taken to a local hospital and released in the custody of her father. we have details about the texas trooper who arrested sandra bland. troppers released his personal file showing he was disciplined

for unprofessional conduct at a school. he arrested bland last month after a confrontation in a traffic stop. officials say she committed suicide, but her family questioned the finding. tom brady and nfl commissioner, roger goodell are scheduled to appear in court for the deflate gate scandal. brady and the players union are suing to overturned his four game suspension over the deflated footballs in the afc championship game. goodell upheld the suspension after brady appealed. brady maintained his innocence. police in georgia clocked an nba player going 107 miles per hour. jordon hill indiana pacer was

arrested. police say this is a notorious stretch of road for speeding. another driver reached 134 miles per hour earlier in the week. a teenager is behind bars charged with killing a man in wilmington. 18-year-old taushia mitchell was arrested in new york city. he has been charged in the murder of james rogers shot and killed back in a home on the 500 block of west fourth street. mitchell is accused of taking the victim's car. he faces extradition back to delaware. several people have been indicted in a jewelry theft ring. authorities say they stole $100,000 of loose diamonds in robinsville. the mercer county business was hit twice. they are accused in heists across several states. theyauthorities are still searching

between a delta plane and a drone. the pilot called in the near miss while trying to land at jfk yesterday. the flight from or orlando was 14,000 feet in the air. the unmanned aircraft was 100 feet below it. drones could have serious or fatal sequences during a collision with the plane. fortunately this pilot did not have to make any risky moves and no one was hurt. a 15-foot sinkhole is fenced off in kansas. for one man it was a little too late. the ground gave way while he was walking in a wichita park earlier in the week. hehe has a swollen ankle and it is hard to walk. wichita city officials say a burst storm water pipe caused the earth to open up, they are making repairs.

one of the blazes. the beach a great place to seek relief from the heat as the heat wave continues to hold its grip on the delaware and lehigh valleys. chris sowers is outside in the heat this morning. how you doing out there chris? >> reporter: it's not too bad it's warm, but not humid. the heat wave continues it's only been for a few hours by definition national weather service says a heat wave is when you get three days or more of 90-degree-plus heat. there's only a handful of locations that have seen that. others had 80s over the last couple of days. what was impressive was the feels-like temperatures. tuesday, 97. wednesday, 99. thursday 100 look what happened by friday with the cold front it still stayed hot out here, but the feels-like temperatures dropped off. friday the hot was 90 degrees, you had a heat index of 90 degrees. today we're talking about a high temperature of 91.

slumped over the wheel. the car is riddled with bullets and police found a trail of blood leading out of the passenger side door. the parking lot belongs to a private nonprofit called the somerset center. him stay with "action news" and 6abc.com for the latest details. the search is on for the killer who police say chased his target for ten blocks firing the whole way. the action cam was on 1900 block of mountain street in south philadelphia. this all started around 11:00 p.m. witnesses who called 911 said she saw a man dodging bullets while he ducked behind parked cars the victim, a 30-year-old man died at the hospital. no arrests have been made. in port richmond they are looking for answers as police look for the gunman who killed a young mother in front of her 2-year-old daughter. the neighborhood is shocked.

sharrie williams has more. >> reporter: prayers went up for stephanie dzikowski. about 100 people packed the block on aramingo avenue for an vigil to to remember the 22-year-old. philadelphia police say she was shot and killed in her own home while her 2-year-old child was close by. ryan is her younger brother. >> she is gone now she didn't deserve that. she was making a better life for herself and her daughter. now she is gone. >> reporter: family and friends left notes and pictures and stuffed animals. her grieving father brought the beautiful flowers to place on on the memorial for his daughter. police release this video which may show the killer fleeing down down aramingo. >> he went straight up toward

imait. he was trying to get a patten for a clothing design. his mother said he is battling mental issues. massive wildfires consuming parts of california have proved deadly. david ruhl was killed thursday while battling one of the fires. officials have not said how he died. 23 large fires many parked by lightning strikes are burning this morning across northern california. hundreds of people have been forced to flee their homes. >> it's like being in another world. the smell of the embers, i mean it's still burning here. >> governor jerry brown has declared a state of emergency. an airplane part found on island beach in africa arrived in france overnight. now the formal investigation will finn to determine whether the 6-foot wing came from the malaysia jet liner missing for more than a year.

>> a houston bus driver is hailed a hero for stopping his regular route to run toward a burning home and save a stranger. paul nelson said he saw smoke and heard a woman screaming for help. he pulled the homeowner a safe distance away from the fire and went back to the building searching for more victims. he said he suffered minor burns but would not rest at a time to do it again. very fortunate for that women. >> reporter: very much a hero. >> you're a hero with the warm weather. >> reporter: there's the view of center city looks good out there.

we have high thin clouds upstairs it's warm and humid the dewpoints will drop throughout the day. 77 in philadelphia. dewpoint, 63. winds out of the southwest at 9 miles per hour. look at this view on the sand in cape may. you can see we have couple of guys out there fishing. it's quiet the slightest breeze out of the west. you can have a land breeze that will allow the temperatures on the water to zoom all the way up into the uppers, we're expecting a high in cape may of 87, 88. right now you're sitting at 77 and the winds are out of the west at 6 miles per hour. 72 that's the number in millville. dover. lancaster, 66. 66 in allentown and trenton checking in at 73. you're heat indices or feels-like temperatures maybe a degree or two warmer than the actual air temperatures. the idea is for the dewpoints to come down in the afternoon the

feels-like temperatures should not be an issue later on. 5:00 p.m. we're forecasting a high of 91 but the feels-like temperatures may be cooler than the actual air temperatures. so again no issues with humidity today. satellite and radar we'll stay dry there will be no issues with any rain except for the poconos. there could be a brief passing shower with the passage of a cold front. that's about it. as we look across the country it's very, very quiet across the lower 48. this would be the target the travel trouble spot. west of chicago saint louis omaha, minneapolis, there could severe weather developing with the heating of the day. another front we'll postulator in this up coming week. most of the country is dry showers passing through orlando own jacksonville. sun and clouds later this afternoon. slightest chance of a pop-up shower or brief thunderstorm for the poconos later on. it will not amount to all that
