large explosion behind me and the whole house shook and i shook. >> reporter: the impact knocked 85-year-old carmen adamo right out of his chair. he was cut and bruised but alive. he thought there had been an explosion. >> smoke, dust all flying about me and it knocked me right out of the chair. >> reporter: carmen made his way upstairs and had to crawl down a fireman's ladder to safety. his next door neighbor in the twin house was jolted out of bed by the impact. the car burst into flames inside carmen's house. >> within no seconds it just flame like crazy up in the roof. i was like my -- i thought within one moment i thought my house is going, too. i was like wow. >> reporter: everyone got out safely including the driver of the car. police have charged 34-year-old katherine ryan of rhawnhurst with dui and other offenses. carmen says she came into his life at exactly the wrong time. last week he buried his wife, phyllis, who had been battling

cancer for years. >> she got buried on august the fourth at veterans cemetery in newtown and then four days later, sunday, yeah, four or five days later this happens. >> reporter: carmen's daughter lisa is just glad she didn't lose her father a week after her mother died. >> i was relieved to see he was awake and alert and talking. cuts upset me a little bit with the stitches but glad he's okay. >> reporter: carmen is a retired philadelphia police officer. he and phyllis bought this house back in 1960 right after they got married. he says he won't be back. he's now moving on to a nursing home. live in rhawnhurst, david henry, channel6 "action news. monica. >> thank you, david. a 24-year-old woman and a 30-year-old man were killed after a vehicle crashed and overturned. it happened early this morning at adams and whitaker avenues in the lawncrest section of philadelphia. police say the driver was speeding, tried to turn but

hit the curb then hit a utility box. the impact caused that vehicle to flip over ejecting the driver and passenger. both pronounced dead at the scene. they have not yet been identified. >> pennsylvania attorney general kathleen kane will speak publicly for the first time about the charges against her. her spokesperson says she will talk about the criminal charges and answer questions this wednesday in harrisburg. kane is charged with leaking secret grand jury information and lying about it under oath. the attorney general was arraigned on saturday but did not enter a plea. she has maintained her innocence. a state of emergency has been declared in ferguson, missouri after violence broke out during a protest on the anniversary of the fatal shooting of michael brown. 18-year-old tyrone harris remains in critical condition after he was shot by police last night. officials say harris fired into the windshield of a van carrying plainclothes officers and they returned fire. harris' father says two girls who were with his son told him he was unarmed and running

away when he was shot. >> there is a small group of people out there who are intent on making sure that we don't have peace that prevails. >> the state of emergency declaration in ferguson allows saint louis county to take control of police emergency management. and there will be much more on the unrest in ferguson on world news tonight with david muir. that's at 6:30 right after "action news" at 6:00. >> a 12-year-old boy had to be rescued by lifeguards in ocean county today when he got buried in the sand. it happened about 2:00 this afternoon here in surf city. officials say the child was digging in the sands when it just caved in on him. lifeguards responded quickly. emergency officials were also called in to help. the child was stabilized when he was flown to an area hospital. town officials say they do not permit this type of digging on the beach because of that collapse danger. turning to the forecast, the clouds have moved in and we're getting ready for some rain. meteorologist cecily tynan at

the "action news" big board with the latest from accuweather. i-cecily. >> hi, monica. we really could use the rain and we've got some heavy rain that will be moving in during the overnight hours. storm tracker6 live double scan showing if you live near pittsburgh you see all that rain, all the thunderstorms, that's associated way warm front that will be lifting through in the overnight hours and that will bring us some heavy downpours and the potential for strong storms. right now as we zoom in, we've got the clouds in place and we do have some showers breaking out, most of the activity is west of philadelphia but that will really intensify as we head through the overnight hours. but what a difference a day makes. over the weekend mostly sunny skies, low humidity, temperatures in the mid to upper 80's. today so far the high only 79 degrees with all that cloud cover and also it's definitely on the muggy side. dewpoints show that philadelphia currently the dewpoint is 65 degrees with a wind out of the southeast off the ocean. however, if you look down to charleston and roanoke, virginia, underneath that warm

front dewpoints are in the 70's and that's the air mass we'll be dealing with tomorrow. once that warm front lifts through. so, future tracker showing as we head through the overnight hours, we'll have a combination of that warm front combining with moisture from the atlantic and something also known as a low level jet. it's a ribbon of air about 5,000 feet in the atmosphere. it helps transport moisture and provides some lift to support storms so we could have a very stormy early start to the morning commute on tuesday. so, this is what's a heads. some late night storms with heavy downpours, could cause some localized flooding and also vivid lightning. dogs and children maybe weeing you up in the wee hours of morning. i'll talk more about that and what's behind that system in the full accuweather forecast. monica. >> thank you cecily. before you head out the door be sure to check 6abc.com/weather. there you'll find live satellite and rada radar imagery matches. remember to follow our team of meteorologists on facebook and twitter.

>> the deadline for people to get their septa regional rail passes for the upcoming papal visit has come and gone but there's still a chance to secure one. lottery winners had until 3 o'clock today to finalize their purchase. septa says whatever passes go unclaimed they'll go to random people who entered but didn't win during the first go round. the nguyeners will be notified by e-mail. septa decided on a lottery after initial online sales crashed its web site. meantime pope francis' historic visit will make getting around the city of philadelphia pretty difficult. there will be major road restrictions plus the closure of the ben franklin bridge. some expectant mothers are worried about getting to city hospitals if they happen to go into labor that weekend in september. "action news" reporter and registered nurse ali gorman joins us live tonight outside of the university of the hospital of pennsylvania to explain. hey, ali. >> reporter: hey, rick and for women who live inside the city it shouldn't be a problem

but for women who live outside the city but want to deliver at a hospital inside the city, inside a traffic box, they'll need a backup plan just in case and that is what the hospitals right now are working on. >> where is the baby. >> ? where is the big boy. >> reporter: two-year-old anthony is excited to welcome a new brother or sister. so are his parents but his mother admits there are some logistical concerns. >> with this pregnancy i'm due during the pope's visit so that has been somewhat interesting. >> reporter: nicole and her husband live in collingswood, inform. her hospital is pennsylvania hospital. in normal circumstances, it's a quick commute. but during the papal visit, the ben franklin bridge will be closed. dr. debra driscoll is claire of the ob/gyn department for penn medicine. she says all patients including nicole will have a specific contingency plan. >> we'll be looking at

everyone's individual obstetrical history and where they live, making sure that they feel comfortable with their care plan. >> reporter: other hospitals inside the traffic box tell us similar plans are under way. >> if not you'll have a brother. do you want a brother or a sister. >> reporter: for nicole she wants to be prepared. her nursery is ready. she's getting a copy of her medical records and just in case, she booked a hotel room in the city. >> it's not ideal but if the inn that's what we need to do to get to the hospital that's what we're going to do. >> reporter: anyone can also call 911 for an emergency. ambulance will be running. an ambulance will take you to the closest hospital. that's why it's a good idea to have a copy of your medical records. now, by the way nicole and her husband are catholic. they tell me if it's a boy, his middle name will be frances after pope francis. that's the latest here reporting lively from university city ali gorman channel6 "action news."

>> it was a day of violence in turkey today with two attacks. the first one occurred when two women opened fire at the u.s. consulate in istanbul. turkey's news agency says no one was hurt. police arrested one of the women and are still searching for the other one. also in istanbul someone exploded a car bomb at a police station then fired on police inspecting the scene. four people died in the explosion. the two attackers were reportedly killed in an exchange of gunfire with police. there were no immediate claims of responsibility. >> crews on four commercial flights reported seeing a drone near newark liberty international airport yesterday. the faa says those planes were preparing to land at the time and they were eight to 13 miles away from the airport. now, the drone did not force any of the flights to adjust course. all of them were still able to

land safely. the faa is launching an investigation. flying a drone anywhere near an airplane of course can bring criminal charges and fines of up to $25,000. health check tonight. the ebola outbreak in west africa may be waning but many survivors face serious new health problems. the world health organization says about half of the 13,000 survivors have chronic joint pain, extreme fatigue, frequent headaches and trouble concentrating and it's keeping many from working again. in addition a quarter have eye problems including vision loss even blindness. because the virus can stay in their eyes even when it's not in their blood. doctors say they need more eye specialists to save the survivor's vision. >> school will be back in session before we know it is. now a is the time to prepare for a healthy start. a pediatrician visit is in order and to get their vision

and hearing checked. some kids may also need medication release forms for school files. about a week or two before school starts ease the kids back into sleep and breakfast routines according to the experts. >> want to start eating breakfast on time. another thing, too, with regards to sleep, most kids under 12 need about 10 or 11 hours of sleep. after that is about nine to 10 hours of sleep. you want to start to move their bed times back about 15 to 20 minutes every two to three days prior to school starts. >> also, practice hand washing in the weeks leading up to school to make a habit of it. it's the best way to avoid the colds that often pop up when kids head back to class. bedtime stories can do a lot more than bond a parent and child. new research shows they may also boost a child's learning ability and imagination. looking at the brains of kids between the ages of three and five, scientists found more activity in areas linked to language and visual images when they were being read to. they think preschoolers can

>> ♪ >> berkshire hathaway has acquired another company but even for billionaire william buffet this is a big deal. it said today it will spend $37.2 billion for precision cath parts. precision makes parts for aircraft makers and other industrial companies. buffet called it a supplier of choice for the world's air and space industry. >> a revamped diet pepsi with outaspertame. in response to customer feedback pepsi said it will replace it in the drink with another artificial sweetener that has less issues and baggage. this one will now test the theory that the sweetener may be to blame for folks drinking less diet sewed today. other products that still have aspertame include diet coke and diet dr. pepper. target stores are going gender neutral. there will no longer be labels saying boys and girls toys,

as well. >> and rick and monica, kind of a gloomy start to the work week. a lot of clouds and storm tracker6 live double scan showing we have a few scattered showers mainly west of philadelphia. the steadiest right now over delaware from newark delaware to glasgow and also the delaware memorial bridge dealing with a shower that's moving through, really moving up the delaware river. the plane event is going to be waiting until the overnight hours. tonight if you're heading to musikfest, jerry seinfeld is performing and it's looking pretty good. mostly cloudy, could have an isolated shower. temperatures fairly comfortable. will be a muggy night with a temperature of 71 degrees at 8:30 and temperatures stuck in the 70's today with the clouds and the winds off the ocean. philadelphia 77, allentown 73, wilmington 72. millville 75. in trenton 79. the atlantic city airport 76. the average high for this time of year is 86 degrees. temperatures well below average. satellite6 along with action radar showing what's going on.

there's low pressure over the midwest and what we'll first be dealing with is a warm front. that will be moving through in the overnight hours and then there's a cold front that will be moving through tomorrow evening and that will bring us a round of some showers and thunderstorms. future tracker showing first the warm front will be approaching after midnight around 1 o'clock. some thunderstorms breaking out in the far western suburbs, lancaster county, berks county into chester county by about 5 o'clock in the morning, this is when you'll likely hear that rumble of thunder, some heavy downpours and also likely a lot of lightning for the beginning of the morning commute. by about 8 o'clock the steadiest activity is moving out but we'll still have some spotty downpours, so the roads will be wet for the morning commute and then in the afternoon, is when we'll be dealing with some scattered thunderstorms with that cold front. so, this is what to expect overnight. really the key time between about 2 o'clock in the morning and 8 o'clock in the morning. this is when we'll have some jolting thunderstorms that will likely wake you up and we're looking at a pretty good soaking around three-quarters of an inch to an inch and a

half of rain. a problem is a lot of that will be running offer since it's occurring so quickly. some ponding on roads and that will likely cause a very slow early morning commute. a good idea to allow plenty extra time. as we head into tomorrow afternoon this is ahead of that cold front. you can see the activity a lot more spotty but it could have some isolated damaging wind gusts with some thunderstorms ahead of that cold front. so, the exclusive five day at 5:00 showing tomorrow it will be humid, 82 degrees, some scattered thunderstorms late in the day and in the evening. ahead of that cold front but behind that cold front a breath of fresh air on wednesday, beautiful weather, mixture of sun and clouds, 85 degrees but low humidity, 83 on thursday, friday 87 and saturday it will be warm, 89 with app possibility of a thunderstorm. adam will have details on the second half of the weekends coming up in the full accuweather 7-day forecast. it's monday but we're already planning for the weekend. >> okay. >> thank you cecily. much more "action news" when we come right back.

make sure their ready for pope francis' visit but are they going overboard a bit. we'll hear from residents. gunfire in one delaware community leaves a person dead and two other in the hospital an yellow river of toxic chemicals continues to threaten several western states and it's much larger than first feared. >> and now the details. we are 46 days away from pope francis' visit to philadelphia for the world meeting of families. with news of major road closures modified septa routes even university closings, many are wondering if the city is doing too much. "action news" reporter chad pradelli talked to folks in center city today to hear what they think and he's live outside of the archdiocese headquarters tonight with more. chad. >> reporter: hey, rick. critics of the security measures have been loud and clear but officials of the world meeting of families say there are some very smart people involved in the planning process and they are erring on the side of caution. city dwellers are expecting one long weekend at the end of september which when pope

francis makes his way to the city. some believe city officials, the secret service and other leaders are engaging in overkill with the security measures put in place and the widespread road closures. >> i do think it's overkill. i think that basically there's no indication that any threat is going to happen to folks if i'm okay with it, man. it's the city. you expect things to happen. so, let's have some fun. >> reporter: just how many people will make their way to philadelphia is unclear. estimates pegged at one to 2 million. since pope francis' election he has drawn huge crowds around the world. city leaders are preparing for the worst. many people it seems are undecided if they will try and get a glimpse of the pontiff. >> i might go see him, you know. like rich said, if i'm out and about i'll see him. >> reporter: officials with the archdiocese say hotels are currently at 60 percent capacity a seemingly low

figure a month and a half away from the event but organizers believe many people have waited to finalize their plans. >> i think everyone's goal is that this be a safe secure event and same time be open accessible and fun and spiritual. we understand the concerns. in our meetings we advocate for residents for the businesses because we hope that there will be as minimal an impact as possible and we understand those concerns. >> reporter: and officials here tell me that many of the hotels here in the city have now released their inventory for the week. if before you made some calls and tried the get a hotel room they weren't available, well, many are available now. i'm live in center city, chad pradelli, channel6 "action news." >> thank you, chad. restaurants and businesses located in that traffic box are still wondering what they will have to do to stay opened during pope francis' visit. "action news" has learned that mayor michael nutter and law enforcement are getting ready to answer some of those questions and will likely

release details later this week. we're told meetings will be held with business owners including those from the reading terminal market to discuss delivery and security plans. with so many angles to cover on the papal visit we have established a special pope channel on our web site, 6abc.com. you can find all the latest details from traffic and transit restrictions to how residents and businesses are getting prepared. >> in other news tonight, one person was killed, two others wounded in a shooting in wilmington, delaware earlier today. it happened near the intersection of seventh and washington streets this afternoon. still not clear what led up to this shooting but one adult did not survive. two other people were rushed to the hospital in stable condition. police have not yet released the names or ages of the victims or any information about a suspect. >> also from our delaware bureau tonight local leaders stood outside the wilmington police department to call for more community involvement in stemming the tide of violence. this on the one year anniversary of the shooting death of michael brown in

ferguson, missouri. leadsers say it's crucial that police officers and neighbors come up with strategies that will keep everyone safe. they add that the culture of not cooperating with investigations has to stop. among today's attendees the family of james rogers a 29-year-old man who was shot and killed last month. >> a gas station clerk is recovering after being attacked on the job in philadelphia's strawberry mansion section and it was all caught on surveillance video. it happened at the sunoco station here in the 1700 block of north 33rd street last wednesday. authorities say a man walked in and then kicked opened a secured door leading to the cash register. once inside, that suspect repeatedly punched the 52-year-old clerk. the victim managed to grab a phone and call 911 anyway and that stopped the attack. the suspect ran off without taking anything. philadelphia police are looking for the angry thief who robbed this germantown convenience store. it happened at the in and out deli here in the 5100 block of

germantown avenue last thursday. police say the suspect got into an argument then started punching the plexiglas on the counter. he did eventually break it and video shows him reaching through the glass right there to grab a bottle of liquor. he took off and took the liquor with him. the spill involving contaminated wastewater from an abandoned colorado mine is through times larger than estimated according to officials. this is what the river looked like the day before the spill. this is how it looks tonight. more than 3 million gallons of water laced with led and arsenic that spilled into the water from the gold king mine last thursday. abc's brandi hitt with the latest. >> reporter: a state of emergency in colorado. more than 3 million gallons of this yellow toxic sludge has poured into the anamus river at an alarming 550 gallons per minute. >> we're encouraging people to stay out of the river.

>> reporter: the environmental disaster caused by the epa scrambling to clean up the mess. crews accidentally released the tainted water last week stored insides an abandoned mine. the waste now spreading across more than 100 miles of a once pristine river, as far south as new mexico where the governor got an aerial look at the damage. >> you see something that your minds is adjusted to see. >> reporter: new data released by the epa says at its peak the sludge had three times the normal level of arsenic and 3500 times the normal level of led. >> i'm on my property and i cannot shower, i cannot cook. this is my place of peace. >> reporter: that toxic water is expected to on that project lake powell and the grand canyon. as wildlife officials begin testing the impact on fish, colorado's governor says no timetable has been set for cleanup. >> i'm hopeful and i would say i'm optimistic that the majority of this is going flush itself through.

>> reporter: it's not known yet what the potential long term health impacts might be either and this still also raises concerns about additional mines in the colorado rockies known to be carrying dangerous waste as well. brandi hitt abc news, los angeles. >> donald trump says he didn't intend to say anything inappropriate about fox news channel's megan kelly. this morning trump once again tried to clarify what he said about kelly one of the moderators of last week's republican presidential debate. during the debate, kelly asked the candidate about negative statements he's made in the past about women. trump was upset by the line of questioning and later told cnn that kelly had "blood coming out of her eyes, bloods coming out of her whatever. today he said he didn't get to complete his description about why he thought kelly was going so angry toward him. he said the comments wasn't meant to be insulting. democratic presidential candidate hillary clinton unveiled a $350 billion plan aimed at making college more

>> high speed chases are nothing new in los angeles but this ended a bit differently. the driver of a stolen box truck is being pursued by police so he drives off the freeway trying to get into an exit ramp but a barrier is in the way so jumps out of the truck and runs through traffic into a neighborhood nearby. the 30 minute chase ends with state troopers catching up to the suspect after he got tired of running and simply sat down on the curb right there. no one was hurt. but charges are now pending. >> turning to sports. and a big blow to the eagles did he first. look like an injury will side line one of our promising rookies. >> jaime apody live in the "action news" sports center with more. how does it look. >> can you imagine how this

kid feels unable to make it through even his first week of his first ever nfl training camp after he handed the opportunity of a lifetime. just a huge bad break for jacory shepherd. shepherd the promising cornerback had an mri today that revealed a torn acl. he was carted off the field during yesterday's practice when he collided with darren sproles. now injuries like this they're always devastating but even more so because the sickth roundser out of kansas was the leading candidate to play the nickel after the birds traded brandon boykin to pittsburgh. something they were able to do because they thought they had depth at the position. eagles had the day off today. they will resume training camp tomorrow. speaking of corner backs, an exciting battle brewing between nolan carroll and rookie eric row for that other starting spot opposite byron maxwell. carroll hoped to have a more prominent role last year but that didn't work out. is he playing way chip on his shoulder. >> d since the season ended

>> meteorologist adam joseph is here now. not too much sunshine out there today. >> a lot of clouds today. it's that humidity coming back in. a warm front arrives tonight. that's when we'll see the downpours and thunderstorms. i know the thunderstorms scare you in middle of the night. >> it interrupts my sleep. not at all. >> don't even hear it. take a look at double scan live radar. a few sprinkles from time to time especially west and south of philadelphia near wilmington. parts of chadds ford, southern chester county, delaware county but overall not much happening at the present time. today in philadelphia though it was only 79 degrees. well below that normal of 86. it's been since the fourth of july that we've had a temperature that hasn't moved out of the 70's in philadelphia. so, it's been over a month it's been this cool despite that it's a little on the humid side and your record is 54 degrees and 98 degrees. the winds continue to if you think offer of the ocean. that's bringing in that cooler air but also humid air. 75 on the boardwalk, 73 in

allentown so pretty similar no matter where you are and with those winds continuing to push out of that easterly direction the last couple of days, once again today like the weekend rip currents were an issue. as we look at satellite and radar, a lot of clouds to the west and a lot happening here. low pressure just north of lex ton. it's a warm front. it's stretched now in northern parts of west virginia and also near pittsburgh and that is where we have a lot of downpours and thunderstorms erupting along that front and that's going to move through here between about 2:00, 4:00, 5 o'clock in the morning right through the morning rush hour for some of us. so you can see that large area of downpours and thunderstorms in the wee hours of the morning. it starts to move away in the heart of that rush hour at 7:30 but there will still be lagging downpours and thunderstorms to create some slow spots for the morning rush tomorrow. and then by lunchtime most of the activity is away and it's fairly quiet across the area despite it's cloudy and very tropical feeling and then in the afternoon with a cold front there will be some

scattered downpours and thunderstorms passing through but we won't have a solid line like we will early in the morning. so here's the two key times. 2:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. that line of thunderstorms, heavy downpours, some vivid lightning with it and then in the afternoon tomorrow, some scattered thunderstorms and any of those scattered thunderstorms could have not only heavy rain but some isolated gusty winds. at the shore tomorrow, an indoor day. a lot of clouds with some of those gusty thunderstorms at times, especially early in the morning at 78 degrees. and the exclusive accuweather 7-day forecast will feature temperatures in the 80's the next few days. very humid tomorrow despite it's 82 with some scattered storms in the afternoon. then sunshine giving way to a few clouds on wednesday afternoon, lower humidity at 85 and a picture perfect thursday here. 83, full sunshine, little warmer friday, still low humidity and then we heat things back up over the upcoming weekend into the upper 80's and then right around that 90-degree mark one week from now and the only

"action news" reporter david henry has the story. >> reporter: 85-year-old carmen adamo and his wife bought this house back in 1960. last week, he lost his wife to cancer. last night he lost his house to an alleged drunk driver.

>> all of a sudden i heard a large explosion. yeah. behind me and the whole house shook and i shook. >> reporter: the impact knocked 85-year-old carmen right out of his chair. he was cut and bruised but alive. he thought there had been an explosion. >> smoke, dust all flying about me and it knocked me right out of the chair. >> reporter: carmen made his way upstairs and had to crawl down a fireman's ladder to safety. his next door neighbor in the twin house was jolted out of bed by the impact. the car burst into flames inside carmen's house. >> within no seconds it just flames like crazy up in the roof. i was like my -- i thought -- within one moment i thought my house is gone, too. i was like wow. >> reporter: everyone got out safely including the driver of the car. police have charged 34-year-old katherine ryan of rhawnhurst with dui and other offenses. carmen says she came into his
